Long-time manager of Dickey Betts reflects on his career and life as a rock and roll legend

- Rock and roll guitar legend Dickey Betts has passed away. The 80-year-old was the co-founder of the Grammy award-winning band, The Allman Brothers Band, and was a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee.
I followed Dickey since 1968 in a band called the Second Coming it’s been a long road Rest Easy my brother and I can never forget or thank you enough for all the great memories God bless your son Duane and family like Greg said in Midnight Rider The road goes on forever

RIP Dickey and thanks David for all you did. I wrote a few newspaper articles about Dickey and it was a lot of fun interacting with both of you.

In the early '70s at a Lima, Ohio rock club called Yogi's, a very talented cover band, Canary, played a remarkably faithful version of the Dickey Betts instrumental composition, "In Memory of Elizabeth Reed," as well as well as the Allman Brothers cover of Muddy Waters' "Trouble No More." So much great music was being released at the time on Capricorn Records, based in Macon, Georgia. Thanks to News 5 and everyone involved in this tribute to a legendary singer/songwriter/guitarist.

I always thought of Dickey as a Bluegrass/Rock player. But if his manager thinks he was a Jazz/Rock artist, who am I to argue?

Yeah, I can see where bluegrass/country influences would be a flavor tasted in Dickey’s music. And he did have some country roots no doubt. I think “Ramblin Man” kinda sticks in folks minds, therefore colors the perception of Dickey Bett’s style.
But if you listen to early ABB they definitely were in this jazz improv kind of thing. The dual weaving in and out with harmony guitar is very much taken straight from dixieland and bop even. Alot of the drum rhythms are as much like jazz as they are rock. ABB took those elements and fused it with the blues along with this southern interpretation of the psych feel that was popular in music then. That period was probably the most experimental in popular music no matter the genre. ABB seems to get pigeonholed as the inovators of “southern rock” but I never really have thought of their music as such. It was a jazz/blues/rock/psych hybrid. Southern Rock such as Skynyrd, Marshall Tucker, Wet Willie etc were basically souped up country music. Not to say that is a bad thing, I am certainly fan of all these bands.

@stardel Guess it depends on what type music you were and are into. If at all. Had a gf once who didn’t even listen to music. Very odd to me since music is a big part of my life, but everybodies different.
