    A very common drill in Filipino Martial Arts is the redonda. It is a circular pattern taught to teach you how to cycle the hands and chamber your sticks. It is a very beautiful flow drill but many Filipino martial artists forget its combat application and can be a dangerous weapon. GM Oliver talks about how the connection is the most important piece and that if you use direct lines of entry it is a great tool for countering opponents.
    For more videos like this, we have put together an online course with GM Oliver Pintados learn more about it here: budobrothers.tv/pages/pintados

      These guys are all over the Philippines. The fact is the Spanish Conquistador banned the short Blades that the SriVijian Emprire used for combat and that the Philippines was a part of that Nation that was Buddhist and was a part of before its fall around 1644 AD. Indonesia still uses the Blades and so does Thailand and they can use the sticks as well. The Philippines are not the ONLY fragmented Nation of this old Empire. Later Islamic Missionaries converted many to Islam and Buddhism was mostly forgotten. The Strategy varies but they are almost all simular with secret moves only allowed by family memebers too know and in Indonesia it was called Silat and later mixed with Ancient Chinese Kung Fu. I do Kuntao and Silat and mix it with Danzan Jujitsu and Ling Sing Toy. Fun stuff while you are young. Hard when you are old.

    I'm not an expert by saw some weaknesses. All attacks and defenses, counter-defenses can be nullified or countered - facts to any martial arts systems including FMA. Some of his counters from diagonal strikes where he did a thrust are not effective, because the speed and the force/vector of the oncoming strike will continue to hit his head (momentum) because they are not blocked. In a real scenario, he may hit the opponent in the stomach or neck, but he is also hit in his head. Also, a very fast redonda, even if it has some weakness or "openings", cannot be easily exploited and insert a strike. And did he say, "There's no block" in Escrima? Sorry, Not a good teaching/technique in this particular scenario, I should say, even if it's for beginners.

    • @MARTIALnoart
      @MARTIALnoart Год назад +1

      You’re seeing a super super slow demo, I love guys that see a slow demo and tell tales of what they would of could of should of. Being poked in the stomach will automatically cause you to lean over that’s called auto kinetics ,so even if you strike you will lean down and miss his head poke to the throat worst it will stop you in your tracks you will hold your throat or cough. There’s no block meaning it’s attack or REDIRECT in combat if you try to block an attack it splits your mind into 2 attack or defend , leaving you moving like you’re fighting fence waiting to block an attack no if you’re in you’re in you redirect and end it .If you feel like his stuff have openings take his class and show us how great you are make sure you record it and put it on RUclips I would love to get a good laugh.

    • @neomagnon
      @neomagnon Год назад +6

      @@MARTIALnoart I have studied many systems in Escrima from Cebu (Lapunti Arnis de Abaniko under SGM Ondo Caburnay, Balintawak, Tres Personas Escrima de Combate, Super Cuentada) to Manila (Tracma, Modern Arnis) to Pangasinan (Cinco Tero) to Baguio (Cinco Tero, Sincala, Sikaran) and other non_FMA arts. I know body mechanics (coordination of all body parts including the nervous system), auto kinetics and auto-reactions if you get hit, like automatically drawing your hand if cut or hit. But the decisive and strong momentum of the long stick will follow through even if you get hit in the stomach or neck (your weapon hand is not hit and no reason (or delayed) to retract).
      I know it's a slow demo, and the student is cooperative, stopping his stick short of hitting his teacher, and letting the teacher do his thing. I teach my beginning students in slow motion, too, to explain things. But I make sure there will be no questions or discrepancies or vague moves as to my attacks/defenses. And what is the vague "The change of change but not to be changed"? Of course, if you modify or improve things, it is already changing the original, for the better or for the worse.
      There is no withdrawal in Pintados? In all the systems I learned, withdrawing is an integral part of a good strategy. Even the "De Fondo" style must step back sometimes (to adjust positions or avoid an attack). We have what we call an "attack/retreat" strategy in Lapunti, which means, attacking or hitting while withdrawing or stepping back. (I know he is talking about the sinawali or redonda move.)
      "There is no block in Escrima", of course, there are many blocks especially if you are caught in an awkward position, your peripheral vision is slow, or your opponent is faster than you, but the IDEAL counter is to redirect/parry or hit the hand or preempt his strikes. If I have no choice but to block, my follow-up counter will be in a "nanosecond", that I learned in Lapunti, Balintawak, Tes Personas/Super Cuentada and Cinco Tero. That means the block and strike are in one (1 count, not two) continuous motion. It is called a result of fully developed intuitive thinking as opposed to slow conscious thinking and waiting.
      P.S. As I said, my comment is to the particular scenario he showed, but maybe he is really good in an actual fight. Everything has weaknesses and can be countered. No technique is foolproof and in perfect timing all the time. No man is formidable with the law of karma, no matter how skilled. Your fate dictates if you live or die. :)

    • @neomagnon
      @neomagnon Год назад +1

      @@bro.marlon_james Blocking is an integral part of every stick/blade system. Blocking is necessary. For example, the defender is in an awkward position when the strike is coming and has no time to evade or parry. Even the attacker has to block sometimes when his strike is met with a one-count block/counter combo. Yes, sometimes a block is not sufficient, especially with a slow reaction time.
      In this particular scenario, he was demonstrating the application of the two-weapon Redonda (Sinawali) style. All FMA systems that practice Redonda with a partner, striking and blocking go together- heaven six, earth six, the combination of heaven and earth six patterns. It is the same with Sumbrada 8-count drill.
