  • Don and Terry check in during March Madness and as consulting season winds down. Great questions including turning old cattle pasture into a deer bedding paradise. Hope you enjoy!

I dont typically comment but loyal listener here. In regards to the question from the guy concerned over what you charge for land consults. Lets not forget to mention that you guys basically give away all your knowledge for free every single week,...if you can't afford it or simply dont want to spend that much money then quit crying and just listen and learn...its free!

I wouldn’t ask any consultant to come walk my property for free. Their time, expertise, and time/cost of drive/fly to site. Some charge more because of their expertise, or limiting how many inquiry. You are paying for the experience, even if the job is “easy”. I know my property is not worth the money to hire. But I have the time so I will grab was I can for free from the podcast, and magazine articles.

Folks spend 5k/acre for land, and then hunt it sloppy with little success. Others buy 2 acres less and hire Don to consult, with much more success each year.
Secondly Don offers connections to other consultants who have lowers fees.
Thirdly, the knowledge they give away for free is unbelievable and invaluable and has taught myself and many others how to become better hunters and woodsman.
You guys are the BEST! Love the podcast.

I just can’t resist commenting sometimes. Don the price you charge is an Ethical issue only you can determine what’s right. I have heard you say people have told you, you could charge more? I don’t doubt it. I doubt you’re charging too much, I just can’t believe how many people are willing to pay it. I don’t have land, and if I did I couldn’t afford you, but I think I could lay it out adequately myself. I don’t understand Hunters? Who don’t know how to lay out their properties. The fact you can get that price though proves hunting is a Rich Man’s sport now which is sad, but hey what can you do. Can’t fault you for having Vision, and making the most of it. At least you’re not out here selling snake oil like most of the hunting industry.

It is sadly becoming a rich mans sport. I dont like that but I also dont like a lot of things about todays society beyond just deer hunting issues. At the same time, if a young man is good enough to play professional baseball for millions of dollars, would anyone expect him to walk away from that and play in a local softball league so that he could better stay connected with his hometown? It really is a very similar analogy.

When we are fortunate enough to offer a service, and set our own price, we can't adjust our prices to fit their budget. Their budget is not our budget. There's overhead that the GP doesn't understand most of the time. I had a customer complain about another contractor marking up everything 15%. I told them thats cheap, that 75% of that upcharge just goes to workers comp. It sounds like the person complaining has never been fortunate enough to offer a service. They must not understood how business works. Not saying I do, but I think I understand mlre than this gentleman. Your rate Don and Terry is likely not enough. You're providing more than charge for.

not to some people. There is actually an "all native habitat managers" group, but as mentioned in the podcast, I bet most are hypocrites

I don't think the question is how can you charge $10,000...... I think the question is who would pay $10,000? If people want to part with their money then so be it. It's called capitalism.
