out of all the guys that call themselves wildlife habitat managers, this is the first guy that actually doesnt talk in riddles and lays out game plans that make perfect sense.he doesnt guess.he knows
I have 1 acre in the backwoods. I took what this man said and tested it. I didnt do any beds, no plots. Strictly hinge cuts and forming a directed path for them to walk on through my acre. I've completely controlled and manipulated them with their access and travel paths. This man has simplified the aspect of hunting by logical thinking. Truly amazing.
I did the same thing on my 7 acre piece. I literally control the movement now, and its like clock work everyday. I have 4 bucks come through and 8 does. Its pretty wild !
@jman71890 it's amazing how the simplest changes can improve aspects of hunting not only for us but the deer simultaneously. Even on my 1acre. They'd hang around for maybe 3 minutes if not just pass through. Now they hang around for 5-15 minutes. Enjoying the privacy and "zero pressure" before continuing to their bed or food source.
Wow, what a neat conversation. Tony knows his stuff and presents it with real confidence. I bet 2 days in the woods with him is priceless. Thanks for sharing it with the hunting world.
Really great episode guys!!!! Been doing this for 30 years and it’s great to hear other points of view!! Learning never ends!!! I like Tony’s transparency on “I am who I am”. Great job & very insightful! 💪👍
First time I've listened to your podcast. Thank you so much for interviewing Tony. He is authentic and an encyclopedia of knowledge and knows how to apply it. Thanks for sharing!
Amazing!!!! i’m 62 and have been a person who has studied deer my whole life. He told things here i have NEVER heard. You have to love this guy, very humble and no nonsense way of telling things.
Excellent interview!. He said a lot of great stuff in a way that is understood in a simple common sense format. It’s been a while since I’ve watched a hunting show in the morning and let my coffee cup go dry because I forgot I had a pause button! Ha ha! he hooked me right out of the gate. Gonna seek him out for more info for sure. Thanks guys!
Man, this guy is a gem. I've been hunting 25 years and have a solid portfolio, I guess, and he painted a picture and went into extreme detail. I've Def learned a lot off him. Thank all of u and Goodluck this year.
The only thing I didn't like about it was it was only 54 minutes long that was such a tease, we need like a 3 hour video pretty please🤞. We need more of Tony on RUclips. He has very interesting strategies that really got my gears turning.
We have 13 acres in SW MI. that doesn't hold bucks year around. Tony is 100% right with his small property concepts. We use it as a social hub with plenty of mock scrapes, small food plots and easy entry/exit stand locations. It's a dynamite place during the Rut.
@@ExodusOutdoorGear that'd be great! In short just for now how did yall interpret it? Whole field of beans but a few rows of corn in the middle so they just hit the corn and not beans? Sound right?
We absolutely have to worry about invasives. This is way bigger than just deer and deer hunting. Keeping autumn olive because it’s thick and can offer bedding is insane. There are so many beneficial natives that are infinitely better than non natives for the health of our soil, water and air which is the real key to healthy deer herds
15 years ago we didn’t have a lot of baiting in the area I hunted in Ohio before all the local Amish started going to this guys camps in Michigan. Wasn’t long they were full blown baiters. It used to be hunting property needed some acreage to make it worth the investment. Today we are surrounded by 10 different properties that range from 4- 100+ acres. Most of them have multiple bait piles. With increase in hunting pressure and lower kill criteria, it’s hard to get a 125-140 inch 2-3yr old buck to survive. The only bucks that consistently reach maturity now are the rag horns. From 2018-2022 I shot 3 bucks on this farm. Average age was 4.5 yr old average points was 7pt average score was 105” meanwhile the neighboring hunters are consistently shooting 2-3yr old PnY deer 125-140” Dunno what else to do so I guess I’ll shoot the mature cull deer and they shoot the pretty looking ones lol 🤷♂️
Love what this guy is talking about, but talking about planting invasive and non native plants even if they're extremely damaging to surrounding lands (even though he doesn't talk directly about the damage some of these plants cause)? That's kinda whack. He mentioned being a true woodsman, that involves the preservation and conservation of native life.
I’m hoping as we evolve as land managers we trend towards native, perennial “plots” (I’d call this advanced old field management) and I’m encouraged to see fsi take hold and become more popular. Next up: getting folks educated on rx burns
Fantastic knowledge but as we learn from our mistakes, let’s stay away from using non native, invasives (pompous, miscanthus grasses) and focus on using native plants that are beneficial for total ecological systems.
He hasn't been on many podcasts because he doesn't like to offer any useful information. You have to take his boot camp or hire him to disclose anything useful.
@@bobo44donemilking51 I'm paying plenty of attention to Lapratt. Did you know that he sued some of his past clients accusing them of sharing his "secrets"? That frivolous case was thrown out of court because his "secrets" were deemed to be common knowledge. His reputation was marginal before that bone headed move. After that he lost all credibility.
OMG this was ridiculously good. This dude reminds me of myself in so many ways. I started trapping in the early to mid 70's and learned a lot about deer in the process. I didn't start deer hunting until later, but I used to skip holidays and everyone's birthday to go hunting every day too. I learned a lot back then, but now my first sit isn't until mid to late October. The 20th being the magic date to even consider a first sit. I have a small property as well, but I always shoot the big ones and the neighbors all hate me and accuse me of poaching 🤣. So many other parallels with this dude. It's actually uncanny. But I'm a lot better looking 🤣 Never even heard of this guy before, but very cool 👍
He really makes a ton of sense. And I know what he is saying when he says get in tune with all your surroundings nothing helps you as much as learning to put the slip on another predator we are human but predators of the highest level!! But if there is any doubt in your mind. Step out of the box and build a few sets for coyotes fox even wolves if they are in your state another is bobcat any of the above isn't easy . When you're comfortable with sets and begin to find full sets then you will be able to understand how much difference between the predators and a whitetail buck a hell of a lot. If you don't have the choice of being taught then take the nolage and work to better this proseiger sent alone with Coyote wolves bobcat fox!!! A tip off the top is rubber gloves that come to your elbow when you get consistent at it I can easily see his point excellent pod cast. You all seem locked on gaining as much knowledge as you can.awsome!!!! l

His seminar for 35 min was better than a high price youtube personality I hired. Him and eberhart are hands down best in industry
I can listen to Tony talk for hours on end. No BS.
This guy is a wealth of knowledge. One of the best people you've ever had on a podcast
You think he's wearing a toupee?

I’ve been to his boot camp and he’s been on our property in South West Michigan for habitat management. Tony is the real deal!
What does he charge for a visit ?
Tony is considered the TOP is his Profession. He was one of the first "Deer Guy" back in the day
He's a great guy. Been to 4 of his seminars
I'm getting 'van down by the river vibes'! I really like this guy!
Tony epitomizes the difference between knowing and understanding. Lots of people know, but few truly understand.
Elite-tier combat hunting tactics, excellent.

Thank you for tuning in! We will not be at the Illinois Deer Classic this year
Tony’s insights are great
Love his enthusiasm
Great video. Thanks for setting it up.

Hybrid willows have been my friend in the screening world.
Every time I pass Tony’s property off Old 27, I wonder how many bucks are bedded down in there. It looks thick and quiet.

I think the first time I heard the term food plot was from Tony.back in about 87 we had “deer fields” before that or green fields.
What are thoughts on taking off coats or adding a layer as needed. I always worry about the movement
I love this guy. What? Nice.
This guy is a savant. Never even heard of him. Great pod guys. Thanks for sharing
Can someone explain his method on planting corn and beans? Plant corn to block the deer from getting to the beans? Is that how it works?
We are visiting Tony at the end of the month and that will be a topic we cover!

Talking about how two species work well together. What if we reestablished native habitats with hundreds of species that don’t need planted annually….
I've learned what i call the rut loop....
