I think I know how to get your pad 1 back on your 202. Something like this happened to me when I tried to use a KP3 as a MIDI controller. A sample was stuck and even though I deleted it, I could not record on Pad 1. You might have to delete all samples at once. My remedy was: 1.) Hold down CANCEL and DEL at the same time. 2.) Then pick the banks that the Pad is giving you trouble on a/b or c/d. 3.) Hit the DEL button. Wait until all samples are deleted. Then try to get pad 1 working again by sampling. I hope it helps you and keeping the SP 202 beats still hopping.
Actually this exact thing happened to my sp202, pad 1 wasn't loading anything and couldn't be deleted. When I cleared it all it's been working ever since :)
Used to love the 202. Using the echo and pitch on the fly is incredible. Also the sampling rates were delightful. But dealing with saving and those memory cards was a nightmare. You're using it the right way, recording straight to a DAW. Nowadays I would use it to sample and directly resample into an MPC or so.
Thanks bro!! Ohhh yeah the 303 is super dope that's a sampler I need to get my hands on. I know me too that button 1 was driving me crazy lol get one bro even without a sampler it's super fun to play with
i got two 202's just so i could resample. mega minimal vintage setup... two 202's and 4 track tape deck = 90's flavor. got pleanty of other stuff but the minimalism of the limited combo is relaxing in 2020. thamks for sharing some 202 goodness.
@@3ambreakbeats977 On the real these seem more solid than my broken 303 or my 404sx that just recently got ghost knob syndrome on CTRL 3 (always turns itself up). Pretty bitter about SP's. Someday I'll make moves to fix the knobs hopefully. 303 has dead AUX jacks and a bad knob :/
@@wandcamilo3989 however the sampler has a unique tone to it which lends itself well to making jazzy beats. Yes I’ve heard more modern electro type beats being played on it but a lot of people without thinking twice will automatically feel inclined to do jazzy stuff with it. So I actually agree that it has a jazzy feel. Not everything just relies on the sounds you put in them. Especially SPs since they have such unique effects
I bought one of these for 20 bucks back in like 2005 and forgot I had it until I found it in a closet tonight. Thanks for showing what you can do with it.
Hi, thanks for the video. Noob question here: understand it doesn't have a sequencer. I assume it doesn't have a looper either. So I was wondering if I could for instance record something I play on seven pads into the eighth one and then set that to loop. I'm thinking of getting one as a fancy/fun metronome for home practice. Thanks for the advice EDIT: I'm wondering if I could do that by running the outputs into the inputs. Wonder if it can play and sample at the same time basically.
Like the 404 and 303 it does loop samples so you can def use it to loop samples but it has a 4 voice polyphony so you can't play all 7 at the same time.
I think you will find more balance with the 404SX. The 202 is a great sampler and like I showed in this video there are work arounds from not having a sequencer but the 404SX has alot more usable features, lots of cool fx, and the SD card option which makes it easy to bounce sounds from PC to SP
After you mark the start points and end point with the mark button play the sample then Press DELETE>MARK>DELETE to trim/remove the unwanted parts of your sample from memory. This will free up more space.
Awesome welcome. To keep it simple it just means you can't record a pattern directly on the machine. So let's you wanted to record a sound and play it back this does not have that option it only outputs sounds let your record on this sampler
How do you stop the terrible pop/click issues with One Shot/Gated samples ? seems to happen mostly if I don't let the whole sample play back. Which is a huge issue when trying to finger drum on the thing..
The only real way to eliminate the clicks and pops is by trimming. These samplers along with other samplers is you have to find a sweet spot, I think it's more noticeable on this sampler due to its 12 bit circuitry. Adding a filter helps
@@chrisgalactic But how do I trim such one shot samples, I cant use the Mark Start and Mark End method as the sample playback is literally maybe a second and therefore impossible to Mark the end of ?
Ok so I really don't think the SP 202 is going to work out for me :( Its fine for loops where you can trim and avoid the Gate mode but for one shots the click/pop issues are maybe just to much ?
My 202 also has the 1 pad fucked. So I fill the pad with air and move on to the others for sampling. ITs over 20 years old, but theres nothing like it.
Got a few questions... really would appreciate if you can respond. 1. Does your 202 got a small “hiss” sound when you sample or does it get you a “clean” sound? 2. How do you get your 202 so clean? Looks like a 1997 machine fresh out of the box... would appreciate tips on that! 3. Please keep doing videos of this machine!!
No worries so for question #1 because you are sampling with RCA inputs using RCA cables the hiss or noise sound is there. When you normalize the volume or turn up the volume in your DAW it could be a bit more noticable. The 202 naturally is super noisy especially if you go from the different modes it has Hi-Fi to Lofi. For your second question I got lucky. I was looking on Reverb.com and found this one for a okay price if you're really worried about condition I would suggest finding one locally although that's more difficult that's probably your best bet. Thanks man for sure planning on doing more videos on this machine 😀 thanks for the support
I also have some hiss when sampling into the 202. I usually have to set the auto-trigger level to 3-4 since the hiss will sometimes trigger recording early.
Of course although it isn't anything crazy everything is connected to my patch bay & audio interface. The key to recording to your DAW is your Audio interface
how did you made this SP202 worked with sequenced pads played with Ableton? I mean - the Boss SP-202 does only have MIDI In, not Out. Your video suggests that you record you hit pads on the SP-202, but it does not have a sequencer and in order to understand that Ableton records played pads the Boss SP-202 would need MIDI Out to tell Ableton the hits. So, how does this work?
@@marcelfrehse It's not. Think of it like this, what if I was playing guitar. I set up Ableton to have a 2 bar count in and then Ableton knows to start recording. Same concept, all I'm doing is pressing record, recording a pattern. Making a new track recording another pattern etc. The only thing connected is my Outputs to the inputs of my interface.
@@chrisgalactic i dont understand that, because in order to have the SP202 playing automatically it must be connected to the DAW by MIDI, because SP202 has no seqeuencer. It is possible to trigger the SP202 pads by key notes in the DAW.

Great info and great video.
Poor man’s SP1200. Criminally underrated sampler
Yes! People try argue otherwise but it is, their going up in price too for a reason.
202 and Dr. Groove were my entire backing band for one of my favorite projects way back in the day. Love those things. Thanks for the video!

Yes I can see how that workflow might get tedious but I definitely think now a days it's used more for the fx and character

The 202 does not have a sequencer because it was meant to be driven by the dr202. They make a mean combo/groovestation.
