  • This song was written by Liam Weldon about the Eviction of traveller families from a site in Cherry Orchard. The eviction took place in 1959 and inspired Liam to write the song. Liam recorded the song on his album "Dark Horse on the Wind" in 1976.
Here, the song is performed by Daoiri Farrell and renowned Uilleann Piper Paddy Keenan at a TPI Conference that took place in Dublin Castle on 20th October 2017.
A massive thanks to Mick Ruane and Anne Costello for allowing me to make the video available.

Great music! I sub'd because of your Galway girl video in the airport. It was the absolute best version of that song I've ever heard. Please please please record that song with those fellows. Truly music for the soul.

So appreciate your music. Can't help but think, if those who sung the ballads and songs, in time long since gone by, could hear you and your music, today, they would probably smile, and either say, or think, you are doing them and their music proud. Gretchen B.

Love the song and the way it was performed, also the historic footage that shows the old traveling wagons and the people. The theme of the song is quite universal and sadly also still actual.. these days the travelers are Roma and alike but their way of living is quite the same. And still frowned upon. With the loss of most seizonal labour and great works where unschooled people were needed, they have been driven even further into the margins of society... and evictions still take place.

A beautiful rendition of a very powerful song. A window into our history, a history that should not be forgotten.

I tried to google the 59 protest but there's nothing useful. Could anyone point me toward some resources please. Also, what a beautiful tragic evocative song. Thank you Paddy and Daoiri for a haunting interpretation.

many Irish in America. Likely railroad men. In Nebraska, many Irish named places :) At Swenson center for genealogy, I went thru many Irish names but I was looking for Swedes or Finns.

Is this an old traditional irish traveller song about badly tarmacing peoples drives and stealing their lawn mowers from their sheds at night?
