Since this is only on Gonky’s channel the podcast should be known as the Gonky and Mover show

What I like about this show is the way how all the different topics are discussed/handled. Either within personel experience or a very professionel guess. But, and this is only my preception, never disrespectful or an otherwise tiki toki like style. Plus: I like old school thinking, because when you are really old school, then you consider the new stuff aswell, as long it makes sence. So please keep this show up! It's a gem!

I helped build one of the Shuttle mockup when I was younger. it was the glorious job of sticking the adhesive backed black tiles on the bottom. My hands kept cramping up after 2 hours of lying on my back, peeling the backing off and putting the tiles, just right, into place.
But, when it was finished, we got to sit in the different seats in the cockpit and explore the shuttle without the glass. I was in heaven. So amazing.

2:03:49 motivation is the target, discipline is the practice needed to hit the target. If you have no target the discipline leads to nothing because you’re working toward nothing. Without the practice your target is always in front of you but only luck will hit it.

Two points. First one to the decline of the Air Force and military in general. I think complacency and politics is to blame. From 1946 till 1990, we lived in competition with a peer adversary presenting an active threat. We got new planes because we needed them to stay ahead. We were also fighting wars against formidable foes. North Korea was flying migs with pilots that were competitive to our own. Vietnam, same thing. Since the collapse of the USSR the closest we had to a peer adversary we fought was sadam’s Iraq, and that was a pushover. We didn’t need new jets because ours were competitive with everyone else’s. Now the only ones getting close is China, and they aren’t exactly the threat to us that the Soviets were. China isn’t going to invade Europe. They are a superpower with regional ambitions far from us.
Now we are in a political era where leads are put in power over office politics then actual military prowess and achievements. At the same time, careers are so fragile that any little incident can prevent someone with talent and potential from advancing. In todays military, the legendary Admiral Nimitz, man who won the pacific theatre in ww2, would have washed out after he grounded his destroyer on a sand bar.
Last point, the reason why people are dropping out from recruitment likely has a lot to do with the information out there. Surf reddit, you’ll see subs for all the major branches full of men and women talking about the hard truths of the service that people wouldn’t know about until they were already in. There are thousands of posts from people asking questions and getting honest answers from people who have been there/done that. They are learning that recruiters aren’t afraid to straight up lie to you to get you to sign up so they can meet their quota. People are seeing this and it’s driving them away. Maybe not in every case, but certainly in many cases. Then there are the ones on those subs that see this and don’t even bother going to the recruitment station.
Just a few thoughts I had

I loved hearing Mover complain about going TDY and staying in a 1 star hotel. I went TDY to UTTR back in 87-88 era and we stayed in Condos once while in Wendover Nevada but after that trip it had been decided that we would rather stay somewhere cheaper to pocket some of the perdiem. We ended up in a 1 star hotel for 2 weeks where they changed the linen twice in two weeks. 2 of our Airmen came down with crabs either from the 5 brothels working the area or just bad luck but our First Sergeant had to go to the base hospital and get the shampoo for crabs. They handed him 1 bottle and he informed them that he was NOT picking them up for himself but for 63 of his Airmen who had recently went TDY. I never used mine but it was an interesting keepsake from the TDY, that and the nasty sheets

23:09 the air museum in tillamook Oregon has a BUFF cockpit you can walk into and sit in. However, I would suggest not announcing to everyone what buff stands for while doing so, as I was quickly scolded for it. They also have a “Guppy” you can get in. P.S. they have an f14 display (no sit in)

Still can't believe there's legacy jets like the TOMCATs still managing to stay airborne. I've been a jet engine MRO engineer for 15 years and we scrap critical rotating components like blades/vanes so regularly that are clearly beyond repair and at imminent risk of failure...how are these old jets that have no OEM or aftermarket parts support managing to continue operating without major failures?? Even just components lifing or cycling out? Maybe they've reversed engineered the parts and are producing their own?

    • @jeffreyedwards5808
      @jeffreyedwards5808 8 месяцев назад +1

Yes its amazing that these legends are still operational, but i think Russia has some pretty damn good engineers that understand jet engines and are not afraid to try. If the f14 was still flying today in the US (what should of been the SUPER TOMCAT 21) , who wouldn't want to sign up to fly it?

I get the feeling wombat has a personal history of seeing a cag act with impropriety. Probably more than once. Given i recollect him sounding rather jaded against cags on one or two other mover and gonky shows. Leaves you wanting to know more. But understanding don't ask. You dont need some random internet comment telling you your better than them wombat. Both cause i don't know you or them or the story/situation. But i feel confidant in saying you are better than them. Loved the show guys always a good watch/listen while I'm at work.

habits can never mentally cover motivation.
motivation is the key that makes habits and discipline.
not having the motivation will remove drive to find discipline and maintain habits.
pilots need to fly...kill hrs =remove discipline from recruitment all the way to retention.
a new top gun movie at this time will not have the same effect now as it did in the past.

You guys keep on talking about leadership problems, then promptly tell leadership to fix their problems. Well easier said than done. The late great Robin Olds said it long ago. It was something like, When people get promoted past their capabilities, you end up with people who are incapable of doing the job, putting everyone below them at risk. You can't blanket promote everyone because some might not be deserving of it. Fixing the problem in this polarized environment is going to incredibly difficult. With so many spinless, amoral people toeing the line for their masters, well that doesn't help. This is a generational problem and not a quick fix, but I do think a change in Government leadership would go a long way to rectifying the current situation. Like I've said before, you can inspire people you've already disillusioned. Inspiration comes from people worth following. I haven't seen their like in quite awhile. Maybe they're out there, but this current worldwide infection of stupidity keeps beating them into the dirt. Hears hoping there are people out there yet made of stronger stuff.
