Heard this on the show ''Atlanta'' last night and realized it had been 50 years since I heard this wonderful song. A tiny memory whispered that it was Sly. So glad I found it. Now added to my favorites. I miss those simpler days. Ahhhh...Sweet youth. We had the BEST music!
Just came from the show aswell lol 😅 this is song is golden!! 1st time listener, 23 yo 👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾
His last hit alblum.fresh from mid seventies
Also has if you want me to stay.on there.
@@RobertSmith-iw2kb I had the 8 track tape. Remember those? ☮
@@waynelynch3862 sure do Wayne greatest hits.we played that over and over for years.
This song brings back memories of my childhood
The show Atlanta, brought me here, even though, I've been here before as a kid. My sister hip me to Sly Stone back in the 60's. God Bless to all the family.
damn thats whats up, dope to see Atlanta hit with the OGs too, I remember first time i listened to this album in Grannys crib home for Christmas freshman year at college, couldnt rest a muscle in my body whole time I was bumping it. Gotta love the culture✊🏾🤙🏾
Hell yeah. Known sly for years. But never heard this one until I saw it in Atlanta. That show was perfect with a perfect soundtrack.
There's a Riot Goin' On is a certified classic
For sure!!!!!!
That horn is truly sublime.
I loved Rose and Cinthya ♥
Somehow, it has a Burt Bacharach vibe, which I love.
Timothy J. Horan Cynthia Robinson was awesome on the trumpet!!!
@@speechrighter I think you're nuts or on an entirely different planet.
The horn here was literally my introduction to jazz. And I'm nowadays snob. I'm so snobby I wonder if MILES DAVIS plays horn here or at least had earnest discussion with Cynthia RIP. She never played so cool on a cut.
"Look at you fooling you". Great lyric.
Oh yeah Sly’s quite a guy .❤️
It certainly is!
Such an underrated tune.
🇺🇸🎸🇺🇸
🎺
Thanks Atlanta for another great song.
You can actually thank Texas for this gem that's where Sly was born!
Awesome vocals, and superb horn blowing. RIP "Cynthia".
🇺🇸🙏🏽🇺🇸
The trumpet gives me Donald Byrd vibes. Fantastic
Gotta love the Byrd
It gets funkier as it goes
Sly may have been high.... but we're still riding this funky train!
This was the first album I brought after my father passed when I was 16... Talk about healing....
Got so deep into depression that i dont remember anything else, and it might be some terminal lucidity but this song is so on point i'm freaking out, great fucking song
That horn over the drum fill tickles my brain every time
At 14 I got caught trying to steal this album from JC Penney. Truly embarrassing, even 45 years later, but dang it, this is a tremendous song.
barrys lol JC Penney carried albums?
@@imar3248I swear they did.
Better than getting caught stealing A Tribe Called Quest cassette from K-Mart.....at 18
I can't' blame you one little bit.
Don't beat yourself up too bad it's a legendary album lol
SLY & THE FAMILY STONE
LYRICS:
Running away to get away
Ha-ha, ha-ha
You're wearing out your shoes
Look at you fooling you
Making blues of night and day
Hee-hee, hee-hee
You're stretching out your dues
Look at you fooling you
Shorter cut is quicker but
Ha-ha, ha-ha
Time is here to stay
Look at you fooling you
The deeper in debt, the harder you bet
Hee-hee, hee-hee
You need more room to play
Look at you fooling you
Another day, you're farther away
Ha-ha, ha-ha
A longer trip back home
GOD, I MISS THE LATE 60'S-EARLY 70'S AND SWEET YOUTH/INNOCENCE.
WE HAD THE BEST MUSIC!!!!
This HAD to have been one of the many Sly songs that influenced Prince.
That riff is peak Prince
They were chillin when they made this groove. My older sister must have played this song over and over again when I heard it at around 9 years young.
Memories of 71 I was 13 enjoying life
This song is ABSOLUTE GENIUS ..... multiple layers here. Genius makes the complex sound / appear simple, loose n fun.
BLOW CYNTHIA BLOW..... GREAT SOLO ON THE FLUGEL HORN. GREAT BREATH CONTROL, I ALWAYS LOVED YOUR PLAYING..... REST ON SISTER. IT HURT ME WHEN I HEARD OF YOUR PASSING, REST IN PEACE MY SISTER, YOU WERE ONE OF THE BEST TRUMPET PLAYERS IN THE MUSIC BIZZ.....AND I ALSO LOVE THE WAY FREDDIE STONE PLAY THOSE CHORDS..... STRONG AND SOLID 💪.... NO RIFFS....JUST STRONG RHYTHM GUITAR.....I LOVE THIS SONG, JUST STRAIGHT AND SIMPLE. THOSE ARE THE BEST SONGS.
Yes! Freddie Stone on guitar was awesome... his solid chords needed no riffs. Check out his playing on "Wanna Take You Higher" live at Woodstock.
Were those 8th, 16th or 32nd notes toward the end. She was flat- out pretty. A girl in the band.😍
And don't forget about Jerry on sax. As Ralph Ellison so eloquently titled it, "antagonistic cooperation" - I am no better than you, you are no better than I am. We must work together for the fulfillment of our endevours.
A most beautiful female voice with Sly thickening up the sauce, but not taking over the flavor profile if you will...amazing brass, bass, etc. That's why I love Sly & The Family Stone so much. He managed to blend many ingredients together in a very smooth way, but one can still appreciate the unique characteristics of each intsument. #goodtimes
Excellent observation!
Have not heard this since the early 70’s. Wonderful!
This GROOVE has it all lyrics, melody, groovy gitar, thumpin' bass, poppin' drumming, and FUNKY horns too!!!! All come together in an intelligent, catchy FUNKY GROOVEEEEE!!!!!!
2:12 on to the end. the greatest outro I've ever heard in a song. Cynthia and Sly. I love it.
Aka : Coda
@@michaelallison6075 thank you Mike a that’s exactly what that is a coda. 😎👍🏾👍🏾
Sly soooo influenced Prince. Lol. That sounds like Prince playing the bass on this song.
Last time I heard this was early in summer 1972. This is cooler than I remembered. Thanks to You Tube, I found it again!
you can't unhear this song!
This song is so soulful, but it's also so sad, because he basically wrote his own biography here. I have such a funny mix of feelings when I listen to this.
Nice observation.
My autobiography too, and probably many others... The best and worst thing about drugs is how easy they make it to ignore all the problems you face in reality. So this song has always given me a weird mix of feelings, too.
Yes, this track sounds happy and moody but at the same time has a deep and gloomy tone. Sly is telling a story of people and himself who dealt with ups and downs in their lives.
Me too. This song always makes me feel some sort of way.
Truth
If Prince would have lived, he would've been the new Sly & The Family Stone.
No, he wasn't 'the new Sly,' he was the original Prince. Influenced by him, yeah; but with his own voice. Also, Prince wasn't young when he died, he was pushing 60. He has enough music out to make a college course!
Larry Graham on bass, Freddie Stone on guitar, the amazing Cynthia Robinson on trumpet, and sister Rose on vocals make this one of my favorite songs by this landmark unique bands of all time. Love it!!
One incredible Band.
@Crimson King Rusty Allen on bass.
A common mistake thinking that Larry Graham was playing bass on this track, it was actually Sly.
Larry long gone for sure lol
@@geoorobo1549 Sly did play
bass on some tracks and thumbed the bass strings as well as played with a guitar pick but on this track is Larry Graham's bass overdub. Sly is playing a keyboard with horn simulation during the horn part with Cynthia, Sly is on the Left and Cynthia is to the right.
I love this Joint !
differentgroove1 it's so unique
Me too
Atlanta brought me here. This thang cold. Blooded.
Only OG's know about this deep album cut.
gimme a fkng break with that stupid shit...
Skanda Baby Right on!
Skanda Baby I brought albums and 12 inchers back in the day, wouldn't know anything about a 45.
You must have missed out on a lot of good music then..."Back in the day"
Yes, a fantastic song, with Sly singing quietly along, an octave lower, but technically speaking it's not just an album cut. It was released as a single in early 1972, as the follow-up to "Family Affair," and it reached no. 23 on the Billboard top 100. I heard it all the time on WARM AM-590.
this song went to #23 on the pop charts in 1972!!!
Damn that's all?????????
Greg Erico.....badass drummer
"The deeper in debt, the harder you bet " ....truth be told....great song.
Such a disarmingly simple song. A 💎
Atlanta on Fxx sent me here..Good tunes from my youth.
Classic and locked in time . Love it.
Atlanta season 4🎉🎉🎉🎉
Childhood brought me here. A longer trip back home.
Me too :')
Ha- Ha- Ha-
Wonderful. Like so much of his music. A gift.
I remember as a kid in the early 1970's hearing this song on the radio. Hadn't heard it since and didn't know the title. Just found it again using SoundHound and I'm so happy!
I love that There’s a Riot Goin’ On is basically the opposite of Sgt. Pepper, embracing apathy, pessimism, and disillusionment with both Sly Stone’s career and the flower power movement of the late 60s, which Sgt. Pepper created.
Great, great tune. Love the fade. Love it.
A masterful display of Lyrical Dissonance.
Sly did most of the music himself....facts!
He's great ! He will always be tripped about the Billy Preston thing though. You can't run away from yourself. He is a great songwriter! Billy Preston forgives you Sly! No lie! 🐮

I LOVE THIS JAM I WAS 10 YEAR'S OLD WHEN THIS CAME OUT . LOVE SLY AND THE FAMILY STONE
One of the best to ever do it
Love Larry Graham's bass playing on this cut.
This Song Went To Number 23 On The Billboard Hot-100 Chart In 1972.
ITS 2021 SLY AND THERE'S STILL A RIOT GOING ON
2022 Atlanta brought me here
Great track from summer 1972.
This is so sweeeeeeet. Love Sly. Always did, always will.
Great job Cindy!!
Proper song, so 70,s reminds me of 6 week summer holidays, love it
Man this song just touches my hart , it fills me with great joy..! Makes me so happy i could cry...!
D.I.
What do you mean could? I always do..
Great tune. Patriotic album cover. Shades of Buddy Miles drum kit...early 70s Black American Pie from SLY!!!
Horn is great.Rhythm guitar off the chain.
This is the greatest pop song in the history of man. A timeless work of art. No song since can touch it and you can't tell me otherwise. This is Art with a capital A, people! Burt Bacharach would have give both his nuts to write this song.
Thanks for the lesson in hyperbole. Ever heard of Stevie Wonder? Much like Art, Music is subjective, there is no empirical way to measure the greatness of a song without emotion getting involved. It’s an amazing song, I won’t argue with that but I’m pretty sure Burt Bacharach sleeps soundly knowing his legacy is cemented.
Ah ha forever amen love this song we grew up on Mr Stone
@@discosecret6363 "Thanks for the lesson in hyperbole" - well put.
agreed!
kinda agree with this,. love Bacharach though
A perfect jewel this one is.
Had this album since the early 70’s. Not sure how I came to own it at such an early age of 7 in the UK though?
beautiful and wonderful
Genius in music
この曲大好き
Damn I played the hell out of this.
ahhh holidays in Cornwall and Devon in the 70s as a very young kid with mum and dad but this has remained my head from then til now. now 58 and I still love it. great days. you cant beat those 70s days
I've had this album so long its all withered.
Sly is a genius
Hope they get their money for what they gave us. Still listen to this song , don't u forget it! R.I.P. Cynthia. Love your style man.
I was 11 when this came out . Can you imagine a 11year old of today loving this song.?
Me too.
@@Bozmusic1 😎
Most San Fransisco song I've ever heard. That's a good thing.
Came here after hearing Maseo of De La Soul mix this into Dionne Warwick's Walk on By (disco edit), which flowed so well. Just throwing this out there, but I think it would be sweet to mix this into Sly and the Family Stones track "Ha ha Hee Hee" which came out way later in like 81 I believe. If anyone gets a chance, check out Maseo from De La Souls Boiler Room set from 4 years ago, where he mixes this into Walk in By and it flows works perfectly, as all the rest of the mixes and soul tracks he throws down, which were the origins of most of hip-hop since the samples were used so often, and without these groups like these you wouldn't have the Native Tongues (Tribe, Jungle Bros., De La) and and so much of hip-hop. You can feel the influence these tracks had on so many artists that came later as well. Funk and Soul poured through their veins.
A Tribe Called Quest brought me here
Sly Stone was the main contributor to the design of this album cover. He chose the color scheme Black, White and Red with Suns replacing Stars.
Why
The black instead of blue kinda reminds me of the cover on Stankonia.
This is my favorite piece of music. Musicianship at it's 1970's best. Long live real music with meaning.
This song should have went gold
Great track
I played this album over and over
Oh Hell Yes!!!!
Atlanta dropped me off here!
It's Sly's *organ* again; I swear, it's like the special sauce in your Big Mac.
So catchy and funky
Classic. Thats it.
Gritz 'n' harmony. A musical revelation to a teenager.
Sly and The Family Stone AND LIL' SISTER-FOREVER!!!!
I love the metallic sound of the fender guitar, of course Larry Graham is the innovative Godfather of the Funky electric bass guitar which revolutionized and popularized the heavy bass sound which so dominated the great 70s Funk bands. I don't know what other commentators on this song hear? It says so much about the musicianship of Sly and the Family Stone, Cynthia on trumpet makes me want to learn trumpet, that's when you know you have quality musicianship. Love this piece.
I'm gay
Its a bit samey
Guitar is playing some pretty chord progressions
Sly and the family stone Nuff Said!
Simply EXCELLENT!
There will never be another group like this!
I’m running away from myself mostly (my bad thoughts and of ones where I wish I wasn’t alive) I wonder if anyone else feels like they’ll escape themselves and their ego eventually
Music you can feel inside soul.
Me rita Washington and Kimberly mc neil on the playground at a 112th st school dancing to this💞💞💞💞
This is reality
what an amazing thang this is...

Great tunes. Heard it on Mrs. Maisel
This track and "You Caught Me Smilin'" were my absolute favorites next "Family Affair"....😎
Sly and the family had so many hits, one after the other. They never grow old.
