- The band was formed in 1997 in Winnipeg, Manitoba by John K. Samson, after he left the punk band Propagandhi to start a publishing company. Samson joined forces with bassist John P. Sutton and drummer Jason Tait, and created The Weakerthans as a vehicle for a more melodic and introspective brand of songwriting than that of Propagandhi.

Also: if you're new and don't know- plea from a cat called virtute is part 1 of a 4 song saga that tells the tale of an alcoholic hitting rock bottom, entering court ordered treatment, and embracing sobriety all from the eyes of his cat and then ending with virtute the cat's memorial service....it's a powerful coda and helped immensely with my own road through this life we call recovery and countless friends i have passed mr samson's lyrics on to as encouragement on THEIR "dance with the 12 steps". If the virtute the cat saga doesn't bring a tear to your eye, congrats, you've probably never watched someone you love lose their battle with addiction, and i envy you for not knowing the pain or how heavy the scars are to carry.
I've moved around a lot in my life, kind of aimless by nature, and every time I move The Weakerthans are my go-to soundtrack. Not sure why, they just have that atmosphere of melancholic hopefulness that goes so well with new adventures.

Recently moved home from chilliwack bc to Peterborough. I drove my Kia Rio home when it broke down in Winnipeg, I like to think it broke down there for a reason. I always loved Winnipeg with never being there because of this band. It was terrible. My car got demo’d I lost all my clothes and I gave up my favourite shoes. But I booked a flight with my cat from Winnipeg to Toronto and made it home: I Stil love Winnipeg and I hope to go back soon.

This is awesome! I love and miss this band so much. But the songs live on in John's solo and band shows. Killer set here in Winnipeg last week! I'd definitely drop some serious coin on a Weakerthans reunion show though :)
absolutely! i saw them in Toronto down at HarbourFront (lakeside) about five years ago and the place was rocking, I was singing along to most of the tunes. :)

When was this shot? I know bottletree hasn’t been around since at least 2015. I can’t even hypothesize as to when the last time the weakerthans went on tour, much less one that made its way to Alabama.
