While she presented examples of curly cuts, however, this is not the technique that BGC (Cut it Kinky) uses. She mentions BGC but does not show their technique. This is not an accurate comparison. Curly cuts in general maybe damaging, but when you mention a specific company e.g., BGC, at least show their technique.

@@joybanks4974the video wasn't about BGC it was about curly cuts. They aren't the only ones that partake in that type of cutting and while all the methods have their own techniques and approaches to curl cutting she was providing a general understanding of the concept and controversy. Instead of trying to pick apart her video and point out everything wrong with it, maybe be more supportive and assist her by providing links of example of BGC cutting hair or demonstrating their method for her and others that may be watching.

I did notice from the BCG movement most ladies did not have long hair past their shoulders. Only one person I am familiar with who has what we consider long her is Abena from Embrace Natural Beauty. On Her RUclips channel , she did not start off implementing BCG but later on began using their practices, but she already had the length and is a licensed cosmetologist.
For me after my second big chop I found the practices worked but as my hair grew longer I did notice it was not responding as before. To date I have put back leave ins and deep conditioner…keeping it simple and back to basics.
    Thank you for your perspective.

I think a bigger problem than the cut with the BGC method is not using a leave-in under the gel, and not deep conditioning unless your stylist recommends it. It seems that few of the stylists recommend deep conditioning ever. I checked out BGC and enrolled in their paid course for a month because I initially thought that their method was like how I take care of my hair not using raw oil, butter, or grease. However, I found out about also not using leave-in or doing deep conditioning. There was good information, especially about the different levels of shampoo and types of conditioner. I have implemented some of that information into my routine, but I didn't see the point of no leave-in so I continued using it. Although I don't deep condition with every shampoo or even every month, I do deep condition when my hair feels like it needs it maybe three times a year. I didn't have any interest in curly cuts because my preference is wearing my hair long as opposed to a short angled cut. I had no desire to cut my TBL hair into a taper or a short bob.
I follow several of the ladies who use the BGC method and their hair looks even and generally healthy when blown out, but I'm also aware of some who have uneven and unhealthy-looking hair. So it isn't cut and dry, no pun intended, exactly what the problem is. Some of it may indeed be the skill level of the various stylists. I think if the BGC founders would listen to the ladies who are having issues and try to figure out what the problem is this may not have become such a big issue.

I've been into hair for awhile and have been guilty of jumping on trends from time to time. Luckily, I also do low manipulation and have been able to retain length, staying mostly around waist length. The warning signs I'm starting to recognize (and I dabbled in the Deva Curl and Black Girl Curls product methods, along with other methods from online stylists) are when stylist are super dogmatic about their niche method and the idea that every thing you know about caring for your hair is wrong.

    • @KlassicallyKept
      @KlassicallyKept  Год назад +16

Hello Latriise. I would agree, I would also add when the stylist is of the mindset that it is all the client's fault that their hair is not thriving r they are not hitting their goals.
Nothing wrong with trying new things and/or trends, hair can get boring after a while. I'm just saying people need to be careful about the band wagons they jump on.
Low manipulations is also best for me as well!

Yes this was very well explained and the visuals helped out a lot too. As soon as I heard no oils and butters; just wash, condition and apply gel with no deep conditioners or leave in…but here are the expensive salon products you must use and you can only get them from the stylist, I dismissed the whole thing as a money grab.
Stylists always want to take over the care of your hair and have you solely relying on them. That gets on my nerves 😡

Too many unknowns before a statement is made of the care of the hair of curly cuts. These examples of the models may have been because the stylist and client have discussed their long term goals with their hair. We don't know. It's unfair to assume that a snapshot is the overall assumption. There are so many reasons why someone's hair is the way it is.
I've been natural for over 20 years and the hair I have now is not what I had when I started my journey. It is healthy still! My goals with my stylist are health above length retention because honestly, my lifestyle doesn't accommodate length. This works well for me as I think everyone has to access what works well for them! For me, it helps to have a professional stylist (or two) that understands my needs but first I had to learn what my needs are (this is a journey in itself). The search has been long but well worth it.
I will say that BGC has helped me recognize some things about my hair that I didn't know. I appreciate the journey. Also know that once you learn basic strategies, tools and techniques, you can be creative. I've found this to be the case. I understand the simplification of cleanse, condition, and style for my wng but I am not limited to wng only!
Do I think a professional natural hair stylist is worth the money? Yes, as a professional myself (educator), my time, talent, and treasures are of value. Licensing, certification, continuing education, experiences, conferences, workshops attended as well as teaching them are needed in order to stay on top of your craft! Professional hair stylists like other professionals continue to define and redefine their perspective industries. Also, having a business includes a well thought out and executed plan. Rent, insurance, payroll and taxes are a few things that go along with the business. One cannot expect someone to give their expertise away as they are earning a living themselves. I do have a respect for an industry in which "hands" are used.
Besides, if I had purchased all the products that many RUclips influencers recommended and tried (every week a new product), my closet would have been full. The stashes I see on RUclips of which is spent on different products alone would have paid for a professional hair stylist for at least a year or two! 😂😂
The advocacy against oils and butters is with "raw" oils and butters. This adjective gets eliminated in discussions a lot! I've stopped using them on my hair and now when I shampoo and condition I can feel the oils that are formulated in them.
Thank you for sharing your view and allowing me space to share mine!

I followed see some curls for a bit just to see what it was about. I learned that I needed to wash my hair more often. However, the skipping leave ins but using 3 gels and a mousse instead never made sense to me. I’m glad I had the notion not to do this and just keep doing what I had been doing. In some demos, you can see that the model’s hair is extremely tangled like velcro , but they seem to refuse to use a leave in conditioner while doing wash and go’s. Even though they have a few leave in and gel systems on their “curated” list, I never got the sense that it is used. All they ever seem to talk about and use is uncle funkys gel and I create hold gel for most things.

Great video! I’m natural and have never gotten a curly cut. I have only gotten my hair cut at a salon when it has been blown out or silk pressed. I do like seeing the results of the curly cuts on women because of the shape but have never gotten one myself because I don’t think it will be cut evenly.
As far as oils and butters…my hair loves them. I use oils sometimes in my wash and go routine and never had a problem. I do diy tea rinses and sprays. When I box braid my own hair I will use Shea butter from time to time on my scalp.
With natural hair it’s really a trial and error thing as well as listening to your hair and doing what it likes and what works for your lifestyle. ❤

If I were paying premium price for not just the original cut, but for the numerous maintenance ones, I, too, would expect for my split ends to be addressed. The way that the company has addressed this matter is beyond unacceptable. What they need to do is explicitly tell their clients that in addition to the many maintenance cuts, they need to also get regular cuts to take off the split ends. Instead, the modus operandi is to never accept fault.

Excellent video! I only had one curly cut and within a month my hair had that tangly feeling again and i said aw nah playa back to stretched cuts for me. I will say that BGC specifically is against raw oils and butters, most products already contain them so the extra step is unnecessary. Some of the girlies are saying they have webbing, i never experienced this but i also never gave up leave ins. BGC set themselves up for this backlash by never owning up to anything ever and always blaming the client, that’s not how you run a business. And their emphasis on using a humectant rich product for wash n gos to me was just silly considering how humectants behave in certain climates. Stay blessed ❤.

Hey ladies, most people getting curly cuts is for two reasons: fear of heat damage, and desiring a nice shape that looks good on hair in it’s curly state.
here is the solution: get your trims on wet hair, have your stylist stretch your hair in sections just as they normally would, except do it while it’s wet with a comb in sections between their fingers like usual in order to address all of the split ends.
THEN style it and clean up the existing shape or cut it into a new shape
That is what is necessary. You will also need to just be satisfied with the fact that your ends are addressed and you have a nice shape for curly hair, your hair will not be even when it is straightened but it can still be healthy. You just have to be ok with that, and realize that if you are catering to your curly style, you won’t be straightening it often anyway, so it doesn’t matter too much.
However if you do straighten it seldomly, just bevel your ends to camouflage the unevenness.
You will also have to be ok with the fact that you may not retain as much length simply because you will be cutting twice: one time for trimming your ends, and a second time to maintain your shape. Allot of cutting to maintain healthy hair as well as a shape.
The other option is to not worry about getting all your ends adressed and just never ever straightening it but just only cutting for shape, and in this case, your curly style might look popping but your ends will be trash.
Getting a blowout for regular trims and possibly loosening your curl some is probably the healthiest compromise. There’s always twaid outs, flat twists, etc
Also I believe that allot of people following bgc are not deep conditioning. Bgc tell you that it’s ok to deep condition when you need it and maintence wise if nothing is wrong, once a month. I’ve been doing all of what bgc advise in their class minus the curly cut part. I do a blowout every couple months for my trims along with protein and a moisturizing deep conditioner. My hair has never been healthier, longer, softer, fuller. They offer allot of good info, take some, and leave some, just like anyone else’s advise, use the parts of the information that work for your hair. You need to get to know your hair, it will communicate to you what is needed if you pay attention and definitely work together with a good stylist. More than anything, I think washing weekly, regular blown out trims, and my protein moisturizing deep conditioner to follow every couple months has been what has transformed my hair. I do not use butters or oils outside of what is in the products I use, which are all products recommended by bgc. Best hair of my life.

They have a great technical approach, but I think for whatever reason all the split ends may not be addressed. I had curly cuts by a stylist that went through their training and it was beautiful but I had a hard time seeing what ends were split because my hair tends to feel smooth. She did a great job with the cut, but when I assessed it when blow dried out I could still see split ends.

The two sides my hair are different textures and the right side curls up into a round shape while the left hangs longer, so I always trim curly and dry because I assumed that was best to see where the lengths will end up and make them symmetrical. I do get a lot of fairy knots so it's worth trying a conventional trim.

As a natural who likes to have fun and experiment AND also value the health of my hair, I don’t think it has to be an either/or thing. Sure, some women will try a lot of things and not care if their hair is healthy or not, but it is similar to people who value length so much that they don’t care if their ends look raggedy as long as they reach a certain length goal. I love changing styles (with my own hair). I know that it means I manipulate my hair more than I should and that to keep it full and healthy, I have to be more diligent about deep conditioning, get it trimmed more often etc. I’m aware it is incompatible with butt length hair, but I’m fine with that as well. I feel I have more styling options with mid-length hair: with shoulder length hair I can go from mini twists to jumbo twists, plus buns, updos, fros, puffs… I do have a simple routine and am not a product junkie though. I also love seeing long afro hair and think it is gorgeous, as long as it’s healthy!
I remember Deva cuts being popular back in the day, as some luxury thing that people would save up for, but the women who had them tended to wear wash and go most of the time, so it made sense that wouldn’t care if their hair was uneven when straight. I was surprised to see « curly cuts » make a comeback recently! I once had a barber shape my fro. He blew it out lightly and had me pick it in a classic round fro before snipping. I’ve also had my hair blown out straight and cut dry back when natural hair was not that common. Nowadays, I just trim my own hair.

No doubt the finish product looks beautiful, I think where most people are struggling is the aftercare and after effect.
Everything does not work for everyone, I think where a lot is people are also concerned is the stance some stylist are taking when their clients are now having concerns

I don’t think the examples you provided are CIK cuts. I’ve been getting a curly cut since 2017, so definitely not part of the trend. I have not used raw butters or oils since than and my hair is very healthy. I think you all need to consider underlaying health issues that people may have that cause damage to hair. For instance, I’m on medication and have CCCA( scaring alopecia) that had my hair very unhealthy for a few years. I feel like blanket statements are being made without really diving into other causes for why hair might be damaged.
Also I want to add, I don’t do much to my hair..I’m not a product junkie and only wear a wash n go. I think the key is low manipulation.

This is all very interesting. I adopted the BGC techniques a couple years ago and my hair has never been better. I see my stylist every 3-4 months for a curly cut, and she also does treatments on my hair, including deep conditioning. At home I use a rinse out conditioner and my hair is flourishing. Anyway, at the end of the day we all have to do what works best for our hair. And its great when we figure it out, and our hair thrives as a result. 🙌🏾❤️

Anita of MonarchCurl (on Twitter and IG) has been SUPER adamant about people not needing to use bonnets or leave in. I've noticed that (although they're not apologizing or taking ownership for anything) BGC are sort of soft backing down and saying people should choose products and tools that best work for their desired style, esp if they choose not to do a WnG. But Anita is very hardline and set in her ways, and there are many others like her unfortunately.

    • @KlassicallyKept

      Hey Bion!
I have never heard of Anita, if that is her stance that is her stance, I am curious about the state of her hair. If her community is okay with that’s fine, I just want people to be sure they are looking at things from a practical standpoint.
BGC, as I said in the video I think the curly cut sets up the perfect environment for the common issues natural women face. In the beginning it was no oils, butters, or DIY and now it’s use products that are best suited for the style you are trying to achieve. If their clients are happy that’s fine, but it seems some of their clients feel abandoned and blamed.

    • @AshyKashi
      @AshyKashi Год назад +3

@@KlassicallyKept The state of Anita's hair is what you would expect from someone who sleeps with their bare hair on cotton pillowcases.
@BionAvastar3000 I could only shake my head and laugh when I saw that BGC was backing down and throwing the stylists they trained under the bus. Ever since they avoided addressing the ingredient change with Uncle Funky's, I realized that they have little integrity and would run away from having difficult conversations. Anita seems intent on picking up the reigns of BGC messaging, but she has a lot to learn as a (very new) stylist. She is overly dogmatic and it honestly is so confusing to see her preach about her version of healthy hair practices when her own hair doesn't seem to be benefitting in a positive way.

I have HIGH POROSITY. I attribute a lot of it to permanent at-home box color. Irregardless, not trimming ends properly is and will always be a recipe for disaster. Especially on textured hair. But, that damage might be less noticeable on low porosity hair.

This curly cut saga is so interesting. You are right. Curly cut can mean many, many different things. It really depends on the stylist. I get curly cuts by a stylist that cuts my hair dry, curl by curl. He doesn’t bunch a lot of them together and then cut it, like how the video of those other stylist showed. I think it may make a difference. He also deep conditions my hair and uses different products than BGC. I rarely have split ends or knots, but when blown out the ends look very uneven. I’m going to have my hair blown out for my next cut and see how things turn out.

I’ve been getting curly cuts since 2018 and used Deva Curl products and never had issues so some things affect some people and some don’t. If you wear a wash-in-go, you should shampoo weekly and not every two weeks. Waiting two weeks will cause tangling, dry, brittle hair, and fairy knots. Also, it is not the CutitKinky founder's problem, but the stylist people selected not doing their homework or asking questions. I am a former client of Aeleise, and she is very knowledgeable about all things hair and always addresses my hair issues. When Aeleise stopped operating a regular salon, I tried one curly stylist that lacked the skills and knowledge I was accustomed to, so I immediately stopped. I regularly visit a knowledgeable curly stylist who addresses my needs and concerns. Take ownership of your part instead of blaming the stylist and BG Curls. Do your homework, Choose your stylist wisely, and ask questions when you have concerns about your hair.
