I don't know why people think this song is so hard to play. I play it all the time, it's real easy. I open iTunes, double-click "Anticosmic Overload," and voila, the song plays, perfect every time. I don't even need to look at the fretboard.
Unlined fretless is challenging, but it's worth the effort. It's also a great way to get a bass player who usually overplays to play fewer notes (at least it worked for me).
Unlined fretless is challenging, but it's worth the effort. It's also a great way to get a bass player who usually overplays to play fewer notes (at least it worked for me).
Some notes sounded wrong, but I must admit it's one of the hardest song I heard to play on bass (and even more with a fretless), so the only thing I'd like to say is AWESOME!
Its actually quite easy believe it or not. Ive been playing bass for six years now and you get used to your fingure positioning after a while. I just picked up a fretless the other day and it is amazing. Oh and in case your wondering there are dot inlays on the side of the neck that indicate where the frets are. But if your a beginner wait a while until your muscle memory builds up then you can get a fretless bass =)
@Jeudaos its a Brice, a very inexpensive (not necessarily cheap, but very inexpensive) maker. however, if well managed and regularly adjusted, they can be very good instruments. I grabbed a used one at the store I used to work at. With a new nut and pickups (not necessary, that was just my preference), it turned into a quality instrument and was now my main one for 3 years, until I got regular income and was able to afford better.
@AttitudeCastle Generally, "fretless 6-string" and "low budget" don't mix. You can pick up a fretted Ibanez, Schecter or ESP in the $300-500 range brand new, and have a luthier defret it. The cost of the defretting should be reasonable (~$100 more or less...depending on where you live.)
@StaulkHolm dont be such ignorant, this produces a kind of tone, and this produces another, if you like the fretless's tone more, that's another point.
there are dot markers on the side of the fingerboard as there are on most every guitar and bass. You also should have a general feel for your instrument once you go fretless so you already know where the frets should be, it's not that hard if you know what you're doing and he obviously does.
@Skyless0rebirth More than fluent and efficient , is for evite a monotone sound in the same note played twice . Sometimes when you change of string , is better not change the finger , to make a ''legato'' ( in bass , like a bound )
@SANTA146 in fact when I felt a regular 4-string fretless (not 6-string, mind you, and no i didn't play it, I'm a guitarist), it reminded me of my old violins that I used to play when I was a kid.
@galahad49 I play this song on a 4-string tuned B-E-A-D in the same octaves, it's do-able, but you won't get that warm, smooth, mellow sound you get on a fretless... The only thing I can't do is the fill at 0:52 and the legato slides do NOT sound the same.
@GiannisKJ19 Basically its smoother sounding. Just much harder to play, and very easy to get completely off-key if your finger placement isn't perfect.
you have to know by feel and sound where all the notes are, so your fingers act as the frets. it creates a warmer and softer tone. i'm a guitarist and thats why GUITARISTS use em at least. my bassist says its the same for bass tho.
the main riff doesn't sound quite right, but still impressive nontheless... knowing someone who has learned this by tab, this is actually very close to dead-on. good job!
dude im trying to learn this song by ear also on my 6 string bass and im so amazed from ur cover, im an ear guy too but when it comes to death metal with really low tuning its hard for me to find the right notes, thx for uploading this video i could get inspired from it it helps a lot xD
@galahad49 you could, but your intonation would be off and depending on if they used all 6 strings... thats like asking If I could play 8 string baritone songs on a regular 6 string... most likely not.
i wouldnt go as far as saying that. i think its a shared thing. bass and drums keeps every one in line, as a normality thing, any instrument can lead or follow, but i think it should be a equal thing, you know?
yeah, i just mean there are some cases were the bass and drums arnt being used, and the tempo of the song depends on the guitars, or even singer, in very little cases. but bass and drums are more than 80 percent of the time the foundation of the band.
@GigaCake What? you didn't really answer my question... i asked if the bass was freetless cause i didn't know if that was so or the quality was just messed up. Lear to read pleas.
@JamieT0 It's a brice HXB something something. haha you can get one at rondomusic. com everyone in my band has instruments from that site. they are cheap as hell and insane quality. check it out!
You are an amazing bassist dude, im still trying to learn how to play this song. I just got a Warwick Frettless bass for my b-day so i gotta try this song on the fretless
you are correct sir. i am new to the fretless bass world and have rarely played one. i actually only had this bass about a week before i filmed this video. its the newest to my collection.
@Wolfsherz Is not actually absolutely necessary, but it helps...metalheads like to go youtube, and if we can put the idea of "if you are a metalhead, stay in the metal videos", so pop artists like Justin Bieber and that kind of stuff will loose popularity!!...and it looks great to me!
hmm thats strange, you may have to mess around with the Truss rods more. i did that and a couple other things and mine plays pretty good. thing only thing about that bass is that the pickups are shit. the magnet is missing in the pickup where the B string is so i cant use it. i think those are Flatwounds on the bass im not sure, they are the same strings i got with it.
@CannibalisticZombie do you have any position markers on the side of the neck? i cant imagine how you know where to play without. btw, your playing is absolutely monstrous. that viraemia cover looks impossible!
yeah totally mad respect...i dont even know how you can hear the bass with all the guitar riffing and drumming...its like i wouldnt notice if a bass player wasnt playing in a metal band lolz
heh :) obscura's bassist uses a fretless bass, just like in this vid. You can hear it very nicely. Very many bands sound like they don't even have a bass. And that's an issue for me, cause the bass for me is an important aspect in music :) but it seems like there is nothing this guy can't hear :)
Great shit, you are really talented. How long have you been playing? My gf and I have been watching your videos for a while. And we hate you for how good you are. You cover a lot of good songs, and this is one of your best videos. Great song. What kind of bass are you using in the video? I am interested in getting a new bass soon, but dont know what to get. What should I get? I am leaning towards Spector, Ibanez, and a few others. I really like the 6-string Ibanez you have. The action is great
I don't know why people think this song is so hard to play.
I play it all the time, it's real easy.
I open iTunes, double-click "Anticosmic Overload," and voila, the song plays, perfect every time. I don't even need to look at the fretboard.
That's what you get when you practice enough.
I guess SOME people need to practice. For me, though, clicking a song in iTunes just came naturally, never had to practice at all!
Alright, ha-ha very funny
Maybe is not that hard . But sounds so nice!
I THINK SO BUT YOU MUST KEEP OUT THE PULSE EVERYTIME THATS ITS THE MUST DIFFICULT PART OF THIS SONG
i really admire that you learn songs by ear. Very impressive that not only you're an awesome bass player, but you have an ear for music.
holy fuck you've improved so much since then
+AnthologyOfDeath I was thinking the same thing lmao
I don't think people relize that this is the real bassline, people just can't hear the bass because he plays 100% like the bass in the song.
Fretless looks so challenging!
Unlined fretless is challenging, but it's worth the effort. It's also a great way to get a bass player who usually overplays to play fewer notes (at least it worked for me).

yes it is ADGCFB
That middle breakdown (0:38 - 1:04) is my favorite part of all Obscura's songs, and this song is by far my favorite
Some notes sounded wrong, but I must admit it's one of the hardest song I heard to play on bass (and even more with a fretless), so the only thing I'd like to say is AWESOME!

are those flatwounds?
Obscura bass work is unreal. Good job bro.
@PlatypusBassist It's a Brice HXB-406 Fretless. They cost from $350 - $400. And they are amazing for the price.
@Jeudaos
its a Brice, a very inexpensive (not necessarily cheap, but very inexpensive) maker. however, if well managed and regularly adjusted, they can be very good instruments. Fretless is the way to go!! i love the tone, and i gotta say, after adjusting from the standard fretted 5-string, i will NEVER go back!!!!
@StaulkHolm dont be such ignorant, this produces a kind of tone, and this produces another, if you like the fretless's tone more, that's another point.

most perfect cover possible of this song
@SANTA146 in fact when I felt a regular 4-string fretless (not 6-string, mind you, and no i didn't play it, I'm a guitarist), it reminded me of my old violins that I used to play when I was a kid.

@cliffgoodbye its a brice HXB-406 if not mistaken search it up its made by rondomusic

wow dude we got a true bass god mostly all people who try to do this bass cover fail so keep up the good work
Your technique and such definitely improved since here. I prefer your tone here though.
the main riff doesn't sound quite right, but still impressive nontheless... knowing someone who has learned this by tab, this is actually very close to dead-on. good job!
@JoeyRocksTheBass The song IS played on a six string fretless
89 people....respectfully disliked this video,
mad skills m8, are you in a band? because you should be!!
@LittleChocolat3 Considering hes on a fretless I'm not sure if a tab would help very much.
I'll be honest!!! just by this cover alone you got me into this band and now I have their album and I like it alot!!!
@Poserdudeman not sure of the exact name maybe hx6 or something but it's made by a company called brice. just google brice fretless six string bass
thank you! i was waiting so long for you to do an obscura cover. oh and nice fretless btw!
dude im trying to learn this song by ear also on my 6 string bass and im so amazed from ur cover, im an ear guy too but when it comes to death metal with really low tuning its hard for me to find the right notes, thx for uploading this video i could get inspired from it it helps a lot xD
Another day, another awesome video. Great stuff.
@joesteed7 it looks like a brice fret-less i could be wrong though. i own a brice 6 string thats y i think this.
The riff at 0:40 is so perfectly executed... AMAZING JOB!
@galahad49 you could, but your intonation would be off and depending on if they used all 6 strings... thats like asking If I could play 8 string baritone songs on a regular 6 string... most likely not.
6 string fretless? HELL YEAH!!! Sweet video man, keep up the metal work!
man you seem to have an endless supply of basses.
good job too
i wouldnt go as far as saying that. i think its a shared thing. bass and drums keeps every one in line, as a normality thing, any instrument can lead or follow, but i think it should be a equal thing, you know?
amazing to see someone thats good at their fretless bass! rock on dood
Absolutely sick. Insane work with the fretless. Sounds insanely good.
you are the best bass player on youtube
@anoakes92 there's probably dots on the side of the neck
how long was untill you could play with four fingers continuesly rarther than in gallops am stuck with this at the moment
yeah, i just mean there are some cases were the bass and drums arnt being used, and the tempo of the song depends on the guitars, or even singer, in very little cases. but bass and drums are more than 80 percent of the time the foundation of the band.
I play a fretless guitar. Love it. Gives a nice warm tone.
I like this kind of bassline and u did it very well.
@GigaCake What? you didn't really answer my question... i asked if the bass was freetless cause i didn't know if that was so or the quality was just messed up. Lear to read pleas.
i never saw a bass video that i'd call intense until now
i had seen your videos time ago, why in the hell are you with out a great band? you play extraordinary
@drumbeast1235 I'm pretty sure he can write stuff. He wrote stuff for Enfold Darkness when he was in it, if I recall correctly.
WTF man?! You cease to amaze me, fucking excellent!!!
There's dots on the side, not to mention upright basses don't have any sort of indication at all, and there are still people who play those...
Not really a metal fan, nor a fan of the "metal bass"-techniques but man, you got some real damn good chops dude, respect & hat off!
I also agree, he even seems to have the style for it too, he'll fit right in.
@JamieT0
It's a brice HXB something something. haha
you can get one at rondomusic. com
everyone in my band has instruments from that site. they are cheap as hell and insane quality. check it out!
What is the difference between a fretless bass and a normal bass in terms of playing ?
@hydrOstem No...he's only playing 2 notes, he is hitting those notes more but it's still just 2 notes.
Thanks for getting me hooked on Obscura
@ohhmytralala mm no man, the first bassist of brain drill was Jeff Hughell, and now they play with Ivan munguia
Is it hard to play a fretless bass? I wana know because i only played a 24 jumbo fret bass
@kingoskingst That is a Brice fretless bass, only seen on Rondomusic. com; I have the same bass, and it's fucking amazing and beautiful.
@rockthehiddenlotus You are right but easy to see the bass is an instrument that takes time and work time as any instrument!
you have a point there. But bass and drums are the tempo, which maintains the whole thing
What's the dffirence between a fretless and a regular bass?????
hmm thats strange, you may have to mess around with the Truss rods more. i did that and a couple other things and mine plays pretty good. thing only thing about that bass is that the pickups are shit. the magnet is missing in the pickup where the B string is so i cant use it. i think those are Flatwounds on the bass im not sure, they are the same strings i got with it.
@uhmfucku Jean Baudin, my friend, not death metal but anyone who can play an 11 string bass deserves props
impressive! do you use 3 fingers with the right hand during the fast parts? triplet feeling?
@CannibalisticZombie do you have any position markers on the side of the neck? i cant imagine how you know where to play without. btw, your playing is absolutely monstrous. that viraemia cover looks impossible!
the obscura bassist is by far the second best bassist
@Deathmetalfan69
true, i prefer fretless in any of bands music. however some songs/bands wouldnt sound as good with a fretless.
Kick ass cover man; can't get enough of watching this.
@MetalPurification Rondo music sells some pretty good 5 to 6 string basses.
@IloveRillettes they are, theyre pretty tough. u have to get it precise or no sound :)
@gianniswildchild They still sell them, I just bought one about a month ago
@lainiac2012 dude, do you really think a tab for a fretless is different than for a fretted bass! cheers
Superb collection basses man!
Awesome bass. I wish I could find one that incredible that's freteless at that!
i don't see headphones, so i'm assuming you have the song playing through a computer or other external speakers while you play to it?
im jealous!!! I want that fretless badly!!! great cover!!!
hi!
I have a few questions about playing 3 fingers. How to start learning? Whitch one finger will be first, second, third etc :)
Really Nice cover dude, thought no one would do it in a good way until I saw you... By the way, Which bass model are you using?
Display of awesomeness
@StaulkHolm well it depend of he sound ou want for a song, thats why i play both
yeah totally mad respect...i dont even know how you can hear the bass with all the guitar riffing and drumming...its like i wouldnt notice if a bass player wasnt playing in a metal band lolz
Dude awesome cover... amazing bass.

@paragshah2112 this is Brice HXB-406 Fretless 6string.
@jordan2002100 yeah its the hxb 406 ive got the 405
You should definitely re-do a cover
ainsley oils up and rubs his meat that’s not a cover. He wrote that and recorded that. He is on the album. And now he’s back
@@AFacemarkedbyFea is this a joke? he is good but he is absolutely not jeroen
I have that same shirt. Very nice bass playing bro, keep it up.
@Marcusbpt49
No, because they´re from Germany.
I think they just take people from Europe, because the distance is just too big.
This is why I love bass.
well yes, there are occasions like that. But that as you mentioned happens quite seldom
Great shit, you are really talented. How long have you been playing? My gf and I have been watching your videos for a while. And we hate you for how good you are.
