Started watching welding tips and tricks maybe 5 years ago back home in Fiji, 2 years now I've been here in the US and most of my employers are impressed at my work all thanks to you Jody. I can't thank you enough for your generosity in sharing your knowledge. Oh!!! I also recently bought a furick tig arsenal kit 😲😳🤯it's a real game changer.

I’m learning and my main issue is lighting then eyesight then sticking my tungsten and/or filler rod.
So, I wear readers under the helmet- good.
I add an extra bright led light on the workpiece - good.
So much better. Now more practice!!
Same here, without my cheaters/readers I may as will not even set up to weld. Cant forget my cheapo halogen lamp.

You’re a great Teacher! Thank you for the free knowledge that you so diligently compose in thoroughly thoughtful presentations. No BS, no shat & shine-ola as my grandmother used to say, and no camera trickery. Your channel (it feels insignificant calling your catalog of work a channel because it’s truly head and shoulders above the rest) is true to your purpose of helping people advance in the career of welding; thank you.
My robotics students were learning to solder this past week and they always have difficulty understanding how filler melts into the joint; like it’s counter intuitive to experience zero resistance when pushing solid solder into the solid wire. I have them feed several inches of solder into a stripped end of 4ga battery cable to exaggerate the feeling and drive home this new experience.
I just noticed that new tig welders might experience the same same phenomenon when adding filler. It’s difficult to judge how much the joint is consuming because rods have no markings to reference movement.
I am curious; would you consider a video topic on explaining feed speed of filler material?
Maybe you could scratch some marks into the surface your filler rod for a visual reference for new Tig welders. I love your work and your ability to explain your skills so well!

Thanks from me aswell Jodi, Been welding 6 years now I've truly had a better life because of you. I started on tig/aluminium with no previous experience just your videos. That plus more videos gave me the opportunity to mig on steel and from point I went for and got job I'm actually proud of. I weld mild/stainless, ally lil bit of titanium, Stick 6013 btw, mig, tig, pipe sheet I enjoy it all (except overhead especially the 40 metres of it every 3 weeks).
I'll always be grateful to you and all the knowledge you have given me through your videos. Thank you so much.

One thing that REALLY clicked with "arc length" for me with TIG, was that, when welding a T-Joint, you should be able to join it autogenously without filler and THAT is the right length your arc needs to be for most of the metals you deal with when TIG welding, then the rest is just adding Filler. Also, paying attention to the puddle, on steel if it forms a U-Shape, you need to get closer.
It wasn't until my teacher taught me that, that it really clicked on how close you really need to be.

Stainless welding with Argon I get to about .010 arc length and maintain an arc
Argon/Helium I try to run at .017 I can get to .016 but .015 will stick everytime. I found that interesting 🤔

I just found out we have a tig welder at work (we mig everything) so I'm excited to try it! Probably gotta ask permission from someone though, and I gotta figure out what machine it is and hopefully it's not scratch start lol

This is what we did for Mig, and stick too, but in stick we had an X about 10 inches long and in each side we filled it with different Rod, 6010, 6013 I think or coulda been 7014, 7018, 7024. Then it was cut into chunks with the horizontal bandsaw.

Been watching your videos for well over a decade. When I first started working as a welder for a mechanical company you were my instructor via RUclips.

Hey Jody, great vids learned a lot about tig aluminum so far. I was curious if you had any tips for tig welding aluminum pipe to each other perpendicular to each other like in rod holders on T top.
Jody, you have some very helpful information in your videos. I have watched several in the past and continue to pick up pointers.
I've been looking for information to help me modify a set of carbon steel headers and have gotten confused to say the least.
Maybe you can help with some questions I have that would help me tremendously.
If welding SS tubing, most everyone says to back purge which really makes the inside of the pipe look good and with no sugaring. I haven't found any info surrounding Tig welding carbon tubing and back purging. What's your take on back purging carbon steel tubing such as headers? I know while modifying my headers it going to require me to make a lot of pie cuts and I would like for them to look good if possible.

Im starting to weld, i welded carbon steel coupons and they seem to lift up and cruve is there a way to prevent this?
Thanks for another great video! I have made 8 bike frames now, tricky angles, thin-wall cromoly. All thanks to practice and what I have learned on your absolutely brilliant channel. My question today is: if a weld is a bit grey is there actually anything wrong with that apart from cosmetics? So long as there's no porosity and you got a good root in there.
I think that for carbon and chromoly, a grey weld can be ok. There are lots of chromoly airframes still flying that were gas welded in the 40s. But a lot of 4130 chromoly joints on trophy trucks require 2 passes and if that first one is grey, then the second pass wont go in as nice.

Hi Jody, any tips to TIG an 1/8” carbon steel plate 3g butt joint? I have an AWS cert test in 2 weeks and am having difficulties picking this one up after passing stick, mig, & flux

Hey Jody, have you utilized a pancake hood? I'm thinking about one due to too much back light. Any ideas on purchase? Just don't want to be judged on the jobsite.
pipe liners love the pancake and get so used to it they often still wear it in the shop.
I never really used one other than trying one on for size. I think it boils down to what work you are doing. Blocking out all back light and being able to see details of a xx10 root means a lot to a pipe liner welder. But pancakes are not for everyone
