  • Just about every “One Man Band” song I’ve recorded has a story behind why I recorded it...and this one is no different. Way back in 1992 before we moved to Nashville, I found myself mixing a country album...in Southern California. As some you know, before I discovered Rock n Roll and The Beatles, I listened to a lot of great old country music, thanks to my Dad and Mom. (Early Buck Owens, Johnny Cash, Marty Robbins, etc.)
Up to that point, as it was VERY early in my career, I had primarily mixed rock music, so, when the opportunity arose to mix some country music, I was way into it!
Anyway, since I didn’t listen to a lot of country radio at that time, the producers brought in a couple country CDs that were climbing the charts. One of them was Mark Collie’s self titled album. Not only was it a GREAT album by a great artist...it also sounded KILLER! (Hats off to the legendary Mike Bradley!)
The big hit off of that album was called “Even The Man In The Moon Is Crying” and to this day, it’s one of my favorite country songs ever. A simple but fantastic lyric with a great vocal delivery by Mark Collie. It was one of those songs that I could “see” each scene as he sang each line. I love that kind of lyric! I must have listened to the song 100 times in the studio as a sonic reference....and most of all because, I just loved the song. (I pretty much wore out that CD. 😁)
So, since I’ve been wanting to do a few country tunes for a while now, (since my version of “El Paso”) I only thought it fitting to pay tribute to this great song because it’s awesome, and it brings back some great memories for me when I hear it. My vocal delivery is nowhere near Mark Collie’s...but that’s not the point. I do these recordings for fun, and just because I love doing them. I hope you enjoy them as well!
I decided not to do the multiple screens of me playing and singing. I have plenty of videos like that. And also...that takes a TON of time to do all by myself. (Translation: I’m WAY too lazy to do that! Lol!! 🤣) Besides, it’s not about the video for me...it’s about the music! So...put on some headphones, close your eyes, and drift back to 1992 with me for 3 minutes and 41 seconds. I hope you enjoy!

Another terrific OMB delivery from J.R., the One Man Show himself!! I was not familiar with this song before J.R. gave it his expert attention, but it hit me at a particularly vulnerable moment and quickly brought tears to my eyes. J.R. can do EVERYTHING!!! Even if you stumble upon this purely by accident, take a moment and dive in! You won't be disappointed. Do yourself a favor, too, and search out other J.R. McNeely OMB covers on RUclips!!
