How To Circuit Bend With A LTC1799

  • I am working on getting magpiestuff.com up and ready to have a mega database of all my circuit bending endevours. So this tutorial on how to circuit bend with a LTC1799 will be accompanied by a ton of other content soon enough (images, pcbfiles, documents and stuff).

    I gotta go to sleep now, but will work lots on magpiestuff.com tomorrow with pictures and such. Its still early stages but big plans!
    Also if someone wanna help with time stamps it would help a ton, hehe 😆 I rarely make long videos like this.

    This is one of the coolest keyboard ever made takes me right back to my childhood every time. I love that you're modding it over 30 years later

    I put one in a small box with input for voltage supply and cv , and output for clock and jumpers for multipliers. That way I just modify each keyboard etc. tapping a voltage source to a output socket then, tap from the crystal to a switched socket, so unplugged its normal and when i plug the ltc box it’s externally clocked.

    It's great you upload on Mondays and great variation on your uploads, however, circuit bending and port modification is what brought me to your channel and what I enjoy most. I've not circuit bent anything yet, BUT, I definitely want to now I have some nice 80s cheapo keyboards.

    You don't need to resort to the desoldering braid if you clean the tip of your iron to remove all the excess solder, then reheat where you bridged the two pads and the solder will end up on your soldering iron.

    I know that sound! That extra glitchy mode you found when powering the chip from a different pin is creating a voltage starvation effect. That's the sound it makes when the batteries are dying!

      One of the first circuit bends I try is the voltage starve. Just put a pot in series with the power

    Couple of things. You should always put a current limiting resistor in series with a potentiometer across the power supply. If you have zero resistance between your voltage node and ground, that’s also a short. Also, I used to work for a company that did smt work. We would use flux generously, and it’s best practice to pre-solder the pads on the PCB. That way, you can just put the part in place over the pad, then heat up the pad. If you’ve used enough flux, the leg of the component should flow into the solder on the pad very easily.

      Not to mention, it's very easy to burn out the resistance track on the pot when the resistance gets close to zero.

    Did you "clear" the memory before trying to sample? Another cool build Simon. Thanks for the tutorial on smd, but I never bother with them cos I'm too old and shaky ...thru hole is difficult enuf for me.

    Chipqwik works well for multi leg desoldering. But suck it off and fill with real solder then suck that off to dilute it/get rid. So when you resolder you are using proper solder again. Hope that made sense?!

    seems likely to me that the second power supply position you found is an analogue supply rail, or at any rate a 5V with a lot of noise on it, maybe even another data line that looked like 5V on your meter. I'm wondering if I can make my CT-202 go down an octave... 🙂

    Do you think its posible to modify one of these casios to sync in time with external drum machines or a DAW? l saw a video from s-cat doing what they called "midi sync" but they didnt explain much

      Musical Instrument Digital Interface was created to offer a standardisation for transmitting and receiving note, pitch and timing information. Many of the old home keyboards can be retro fitted with Midi, which then allows the keyboard to be controlled via a DAW or other Midi enabled equipment, as well as allowing you to trigger notes in the DAW or on other equipment from the keyboard. The model SK-1 shown in this video has had a Midi kit developed specifically for it, but there are also universal ones available and things like an Arduino can be programmed to serve as a Midi controller. There are other ways to synchronise musical gear, but it would require intimate knowledge of the instruments you are wanting to sync, as well as the ability to design and make the conversion circuitry for the clock signals. Midi in comparison is far simpler to implement.
