- Super easy modification to turn this casio ck-500 into the worlds maybe first tape echo/looper keyboard.
You basically just cut some plastic and modify a cassette tape and there you have it!
I also corcuit bend it and talk a bunch. Gonn astart providing so so so much info over on magpiestuff to hopefully get even more of you into circuit bending and such :)

haha thats great! the idea of snipping the middle bit of plastic out and getting tape through between 2 cassettes. many a fantastic problems solved with creative thoughts! you are full of em simon
Woah, two giants in the same room
@Hollandvancewright that's what I was thinking 😅
It's one of those ideas where, if someone told me they were going to try it, I would think it's not likely to work (at least not without a bunch of other unforeseen things). But it just did work rather nicely. That's why we shouldn't be afraid to try it, I guess!
It reminds me of Robert Fripp having 2 reel to reel tape machines separated a couple feet apart. Add one Magpie and let the fun begin!
frippertronics!!!!!
Dear Magpie!... We want more madness!... More experiments!... More wildness!... More modifications that sound like chaos!... Musicalize the apocalypse!... You can do it!... A GREAT Hugs for you and cordial greetings for your followers!!!
If you want the speed mod for the tape, you could probably somehow disengage the pinch roller from the recording deck and do the speed mod on the playback deck. That way the speed would be set and regulated by the capstan and the pinch roller of the playback deck and the recording deck would not affect the tape movement at all.
CASIO MT circuit bending series sounds AWESOME.. I have done 3 , MT800, MT52, MT45 ... MT 45 has so many bending points
When you peeled off the plasticky filmy thing, from the top of the keyboard, that was amazing. I was in pure suspense
I love the simplicity of playing back from the playback tape and recording back onto the record tape. The sealed-tape appreciator in me wishes you’d done it to pre-used tapes though 😅
Another Magpie Original! You're a Star..ling
this is dope af good stuff my friend
This video made me feel good! From the intro jam to the protector peeling it was such a good time! :)
You will have to spend money to get my old Casio, Magpie. I love you, but - sorry. I gave one away and that one quickly got broken. The remaining one is just a bit newer than this cassette monster, and I am emotionally attached. Yes, to an '80s Casio that is not the CZ-101 or anything else well-liked - it's just my crappy Casio.
But thank you for this creative reconstruction of another crappy old Casio. It's an endearing kind of crappiness, and your mods just enhance the deer-in-the-headlights, you're-not-paying-such-attention-to-ME-? charm of the instrument. Keep up the crazy work.
I've wanted to do this for yeeears, but you actually did it, kudos!
You made it look so easy! I guess I should go cut up my Casio and see what happens!!
Thanks, Maggy-P!!!
the website with your research sounds awesome! thanks!
This is why I love this channel never disappointed
Magpie master of weird sound 😊👍
Simon, that's absolutely ingenious! A tape looper that feeds back onto itself! Graat thinking outside of the box, or rather getting the tape to physically go from one box (deck) to another. If you can find a way to make the tape speed variable, that would really open up the CK's potential 👍
I did a similar thing with an answering machine. I left a link but I think that comment didn’t post because of it. Anyway it’s in my lofi-tape playlist. ✌️
So inspiring! 🙌
Thank you so much, I have a 1000 something I chopped our to be a midi module and you are a god that gods my god
Might have to go micro ;)
I knew it was going to be mad! 👍👍
Nice work.
Pure genius!
Coolest thing I’ve seen in a long time
OMG where did you find that lol 😂 i had that same keyboard in the 80s..1985-86 ...lol too funny..wow..
incredibly inspiring as always
Moog, Buchla & Magpie. The holy trinity!
Just picked one of these up for $40 in New Zealand
About to have sooo much fun
Well now I want one of these!! That tape delay is pretty wild, I love it! Please do make the mods available, I have a couple keyboards I want to try some circuit bending on, including at least 1 or 2 Casios.
An ambient machine... Play a nice tune, let it fade out. Play the next... Repeat for 8 hours... Sleep concert! :D
Amazing. These are the things we need, not more pt2933 delays and belton brick reverbs. There are already too many of those.
Genius.
Cool mod and I love those retro camera shots
Ayyy, I have one of these collecting dust
yay! totally the natural progression to do a looper :) makes me wonder if I can do something weird with 2x4 cassette duplicators.. replace the permanent magnet with an actual eraser head? or just pull the bias / erase magnet back
I knew it was going to be either tips on lowering cholesterol or a super cool circuit bent tape looping project.
>busts out MT-65 & timeline, joins in< 🤘
That was beyond amazing. (:
So good. This is good stuff
this was awesome. and so simple too!
This thing is so sweet!
You might get smoother sound if you bypass the pinch roller of the record deck.. the two mechanisms are trying to move the tape (and stretching it!) at once otherwise.. of course that may be what you want!
Love it!
hi simon, bye simon
Damnn dude!!!
10:21 I literally came.
Tjänare, god kväll. Hur är läget?
Casio keyboards never had much bass. Pitching it down seems to be the solution. 😁
Indeed!
You still need to do the theramin job on the antennae 😉
One drawback of this tape modification is: there's no simple way to remove the cassettes if needed! I suggest to revise this modification.
need to design new double-wide cassette format?
If you transmit that tape loop on a shortwave band you'll have a crossover with Ringway Manchester
Would you be able to do a speed contro that worked on both of the tapes at the same time so there wouldn't be a lag between them?
magpie mondays let's gooooo
Tjenare på dig!
Hallå, god kväll, hur är läget?
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤...WAY cool ....
Oi Magpie ! ......And a Special thanks to FearOfTheNorm for suggesting it in the comments of the previous video 💪🏻🤣🤣🤣.....
Wow des is soooooo Leiwand ❤❤❤❤❤
Slightly press the pause button while recording and it may slow the tape down a bit.
Wau! WAU!
Can you control the erase function with an immediate switch? like a kill switch.
causio
There might be adjustable trim pots to change motor speed, almost certainly so since pitch adjustment for playing along would be needed.
It can be done. Reverse playback too. I ve done it in a normal cassette player..but what simon has done is pure genius
Hééééé why not 🙂
love this stuff - and yes its national sport in swe BUT the snus in the end is bit much :(
it was an accident, hehe
rackarmikrofon
Ja kønt er det ikke.
