- Checking out the strange and rare Casio Rapman v.2! Going by the dual name of either DJ-1 or Rap Studio/Rap-2.
Not much info I can find on this supposed mega unsuccess of capitalizing on how well the original Rapman sold. But it really is just a beefed up version with some new samples, pitch wheel and a cassette tape recorder player, so naturally I its very fun!

I love the form factor, and I wish they'd bring it back to do something more interesting with it. A lo-fi sampler keyboard with a tape recorder, SC500-esque digital sample scratching and a 4-track looper...it could be a pretty powerful experimental performance and production tool, that could make cassette tapes relevant again.
Creating virtual tape loops wirh cassettes that could be controlled with big platters seems like it could be a lot of fun for ambient and experimental music, and possibly for other genres like vaporwave. Definitely beats splicing real to real tape while still being hands on enough
Agree! Have you checked out the sk-60? I wont make a video on it for a while since it is very tied to a project I’m working on, but it is very cool! 😁no tape though.

On a lot of Casio keyboards, there will be a small hole on the bottom to access a trim pot to tune them.
True! Cant believe I never even considered that 😅. I think I’m too stuck in ”toy” mode with these (in a good way), so I’m discarding reason.
@@SimonTheMagpie I heard on a video somewhere that you might be able to replace the trim pot with a different pot or something to get a larger range. I haven't tried, so I can't confirm.
@@bgnelson6821 Late to the party but I have a rap studio labeled version [state side] and can confirm that if you remove the tape speed trim pot you can easily add a fine and coarse pot for tape speed. Highly suggested imho. Haven't made my way to Simons bending video on this yet so pardon me if he stumbled on this already.

If it's a stereo tape player and a mono voice in, that means you could put a car cassette adapter in the tape player and have that input panned hard left-right, then with the mono input squarely in the center, you could get some spacious/thick arrangements that way..
I've had the Rap Studio/ DJ-1 in my "saved searches" for ages. It is indeed incredibly rare, and when they do turn up on the usual online sites they're very expensive. I keep hoping that I will find one in a thrift store/ charity shop/ yard sale for peanuts. It's also from the "F*ck it, just try it and see what happens" era of Casio where they seemed to throw random ideas at the wall just to see if anything would stick! I miss those Crazy Casio days as Casio have gone all grown up since then...
Love the way that the DJ-1 can already sound broken/ circuit bent from the factory, and it has some fun sounds onboard! I suspect it's from a similar era as the VA-10 - some of the styling cues and especially the use of purple text and highlights look sort of similar. Once again Casio missed a trick as they should've combined some of their models together to give us a super "DJVASK RapVoiceArrangerSampler Pro" bonkers keyboard with tape deck. Imagine the possibilities of something like that.
BTW, you must be trying to accumulate as many old Casio keyboards as me - you'll have to change your name to "Simon the Casio Magpie"! 😁

“Give me a beat!” - I’ve wondered why I never heard this sample in previous Rapman-related videos, as I remember hearing it on whatever version of Casio Rapman that a friend had back in the 1990s. I don’t know for sure if my friend’s Casio was a DJ-1, or maybe something else? I remember us joking that it sounded like someone saying, “Give me a pizza!”

@9:00 tape speed would be awesome! Couldnt you just throw a potentiometer between the tape motor lead and the motor? Just make sure the resistance is rated for for enough volts/amps right?
