  • Ever thought, "Hey that's a nifty little gadget but what if I ripped it open and messed around with its insides?"
If you've ever been curious about circuit bending or making your own instruments, this here's the comprehensive tutorial for you. This is my first time modding anything electrical, so I documented the whole process to share. The end result ain't half bad!
Check out my full demo of the circuit bent Casio (no talking) here:

I’ve done lots of circuit bending but your video taught me a lot of useful ideas I wish I had known for dozens of other projects! Thank you!

    sounds great!!
quick tip: leaded and lead free solder both contain flux, which becomes vaporized/airborn while soldering and is unhealthy to breath. like you say, doing it outside or with a proper fume extracting fan is really NECESSARY for health.
with leaded solder, the added concern is that you'll touch the lead and then touch other things, which can lead to you consuming lead and getting lead poisoning. but the lead never becomes air born. you gotta worry about breathing flux fumes either way.
also, i strongly suggest avoiding hot glue for solder points. it's only beneficial to keep controls in place if you don't have a panel. as long as the solder joints are good, the glue adds nothing but a future headache (as you discovered). there's a reason that companies don't cover all their PCBs in good (unless they've got something to hide). just don't have bits of exposed wire flying around and you're good. that's what heat shrink is good for.

You added a master pitch knob? It already does have one underneath, the black one in the hole. Still, congratulations, this mod sounds much better than some of the others I've heard.

Dude this is one of the best v8ds on circuit bending. Great work for your first time! So cool! I picked up a keyboard tue other night and going to give bending a try, thanks man!

I wear glasses for sight and still get solder flying into my eyelashes, fortunately never my eye.

Amazing work dude, especially for a first bending project. That faceplate looks incredible.
A quick tip regarding those momentary switches; these old keyboards almost always have a “reset” pin somewhere on the CPU that you can trigger by connecting it to VCC. If you can find a service manual / pinout for the IC, you can put those normally-open switches to good use🙂
Also, be careful when poking around for bends without having a small resistor (~50ohm) in between them! It is possible to fry something if you connect the wrong things. Always better to burn up the resistor rather than the components in your keyboard

Thanks so much for the kind words and advice! I recently managed to get my hands on a grab-bag of assorted resistors, caps and the like so I'll be much better prepared next time :D

@@calderacollapse Ah, very nice. Well, I hope you decide to share your next project like you did with this one, excited to see what you make next!
And no problem, “there’s no secrets in circuit bending”, after all. Really cool of you to share your bend points / schematic btw
Oh & one more thing lol, you should check out Warranty Void’s Tablehooters site sometime. It’s a great resource w/ detailed info on lots of Casio & Yamaha keyboards, and a FAQ section full of super helpful general tips for bending. I end up referring to it at least once for every device I work on
