In the late 1960s I visited my Roman Catholic grandmother who believed I needed to be in church. Although I hadn't ever attended a Roman Catholic Church before but she was incredulous that I didn't understand the protocol or have any manners while in church. when church was done I asked her what the priest was reading and she said she didn't know and that people don't question it. The priest was also was speaking in Latin I said "I didn't know you knew Latin," she said she did not. I said something to the effect of I would be concerned if I didn't understand what someone was telling me and she slapped me across the face and told my father that I was a spoiled brat. My understanding is that there still are churches today where parishioners are not encouraged to own a Bible or have a personal connection to Jesus.
