5:01 We call America "mei guo" 美国 because it is an abbreviation from its full name "ya mei li jian gong he guo" 亚美利坚共和国, which directly translates to "American(ya MEI li jian) Republic(gong he guo)". The word "mei" also means beautiful but in this case it is more of a pronunciation thing. China's name "zhong guo"中国 is also an abbreviation from "zhong hua ren min gong he guo"中华人民共和国 which means "the Republic(gong he guo) of the Chinese people(ZHONG hua ren min)". The word "zhong" can mean middle, and also, centre. Since the language originated from China, the word here stands for "the centre of" probably the world, or at the time this name is invented, civilisation. I'm Malaysian Chinese just like Ronny btw
It’s a good explanation but the term 中国 appeared in written Chineses at least 2 thousand years ago, so its not just an abbreviation. Also, a better translation would be “the Middle Kingdom”
THIS. When he said we call America “the beautiful country” I was like WHAT. It never carried that meaning and is literally just the abbreviation of a phonetic translation that was too long and too verbose for daily usage.

Waaaaay before Canelo, the Mexican fighter came along, my family, her brother and his family, and his wife’s parents and her siblings and relatives all had a party, sat down, and watched Manny fight Oscar De La Hoya (the former famous Mexican fighter). This was Dec 2008 and we were in Brea Ca in one of my relative’s house. I remember we were rooting for our fighter who had represented Mexicans. The funny thing is that we respected Manny and praised him while he fought well. We knew it must have been difficult for him to reach that point in his career and we knew it was hard for him because he was a minority. We respected him so much. When he beat Oscar we were like, “Damn, he’s good! Good for him!”. We saw a lot of us in Manny. My family has all shades but because some of our family are darker-skinned, we related to him. He had trouble speaking English like our older relatives. He looked like some Mexicans from certain areas in Mexico. He had the same body type as a lot of Mexican men in Mexico. Same hair. Same demeanor. We respect people because it’s normal and necessary. But we also respect people even more when we learn about them and try to relate.
Filipino here, We Filipinos sings the Mexican Anthem everytime a Mexican Fighter fights, I remember my dad and his buddies sang the Anthem everytime Manny fight a Mexican fighter or they watch a Mexican Fighter in the ring...like the time Manny fought Marquez, De la Hoya, Barrera, Solis, and Erik Morales. We Filipinos are just your Asian Cousins, we love spicy stuff, Filipino language borrowed some Aztec and Spanish Languages (Like Kamote..yes the sweet potato), Chico, etc), we adore fiestas of santos and holidays (like Santacruzan..where we celebrate St. Helena, and fuck-ton of parties), and some I cannot put here because its too many...well mainly due to the Galleon Trade and Español Shenanigans we are able to connect even the Pacific Ocean is literally makes our countries at the opposite end
I love seeing all the similarities between the Asian and Black experience. Like the auntie who always says you too fat or getting slapped on your birthday and everyone watches 😭
Even in the UK asian community we had this thing called "birthday beats" where your friends and siblings would hit you (*lightly*) for every year of your age. Meaning if you're a late teen with a lot of friends, you are going to get battered throughout your birthday.
It is really strange to me to find out that this is exactly the same in Switzerland, in my Swiss community. Well, I’m from a village, so the beatings were mostly everyday, but I know that in my city 20minutes away, it was exactly as you said. What is strange is that as a we Swiss, we’re not really warm to each other at least, we’re not really feisty either, but when you leave in a city and it’s your birthday, you got to beware when you’re in your own neighbourhood.
Yeah Birthday Bumps is what we called them, definitely not confined to the Asian community in the UK. Similar tradition would be ‘A pinch and a punch for the first day of the month’ every time the month rolled over :D

Chinese have multiple meaning. "middle" is also central/focus. Aka king/heart of asia. And it's not earth, guo is country. Also, for america, it's probably because of the pronunciation and language barrier. There is no real basis that ancient china think america is a beautiful country.

Actually Ronny wasn't right. The Chinese name for China is not merely "middle country". It is "Empire / Realm of the Middle" and this is rather extremely proud and derogatory towards all other countries. The call themselves the center (of the earth, of everything).
The name "Empire of the Middle" is actually invented in the late 1800s, when the Qing Empire was failing after few wars against modern Western states like France and the UK, to show their pride. Before then China hasn't been called as a "state" but more like a giant "field"(中原, especially in the North), because the concept of "state" hasn't been introduced yet. *edit: I know it's just a translation joke

Greek grandparents : " What an asshole is this person, go to hell - may god forgive me i shouldn't have said it - but seriously go to hell "
It just goes to show that there are more similarities than differences in cultures. My mom was Queen of the double edge complisult: "That's a nice blouse you're wearing, but what did you do to your hair?"
It must be a generational thing; I'm Black American and my grandparents were like that🤣
@@mik7564
oh absolutely
its not an "asian thing" its a generational thing, most jokes apply to any culture or people because theyre generalization.
It's worldwide. Lol. "My, the material in that blouse is nice, you should have something nice made out of it."

Jo Koy talking about hundreds of millions of people hearing a thick philipino accent... I'm a pool player and a big fan of the game, that accent to people like me is VERY familiar. :D
During the prime of The Magician Efren "Bata" Reyes, it was the accent that tells you something magnificent was going to happen. When he chuckles that means he surprised himself, too. 😊

Why Filipinos are so good at "pool" ?
It’s funny how even when Asian move to America, their stories still relevant to Asian live in Asia countries, culture is in our blood :)
Fewer generations

The joyous face of some of the audience, particularly that guy at the end is what makes comedy precious.

I love the cast. Reminds me on how you can spin bad experiences into humor and make everyone laughs. While low key letting them know we had a tough upbringing.

As a child, I remember getting this note of warning from my mom every birthday morning - "It's your birthday, do not get slapped today" , as in she asked me to be well behaved so she doesn't have to slap me.
Lmao this is so relatable 😂
Russell Peter's bit @ 10:11, hit me hard today. Couldn't stop laughing since about an hour earlier my nephew who was on the phone with his friend looks up and asked me what his father does for a living. So I asked him: You don't know what your dad does for work? He tells me: No, he just tells me he is going to work. So I told him his Dad is a Hitman and he owes me money.
🤣
bro what he say
Imagine Jr asking his dad to talk about being a hitman on Career Day at school. 😂😂
FYI for some people who don’t know, Middle country actually means center of everything. Chinese considered others savages.
You have to know chinese ancient or asian history to know that.
We all know, but by now everyone just makes jokes on that name
Maybe that's why the Empress' palace is called the central palace
Good to know, thanks
I kinda figured it was geographical
Hasan minaj's one is accurate on another level.
What's annoying is the original Australian version of The Slap was written by a Greek second gen man about the generational divide between Mediterranean immigrants in Australia including how kids are disciplined! Sounds like the American version completely butchered it.
Okay and see that actually sounds interesting
OMG Harith was so spot on about CNY firecrackers. I hate that too actually and needless to say I'm actually a Chinese.
First time i saw Lion dance in Asia...Scared the sh*t out of me and freak me out lah
Anyone who likes Hassan's joke about not knowing his dad should look up the American Dad! Episode where Steve tries to find out more about his dad. So true. Fucking hilarious.
Joey Guila's part is so on-point, especially the _auntie's smile_ 🤣
Comedians are a different kind of gift. We adults need them a lot 'cause we rarely laugh at everyday life anymore. ♥ Laughter makes our life better. 👍

We call America "mei guo" 美国 because it is an abbreviation from its full name "ya mei li jian gong he guo" 亚美利坚共和国, which directly translates to "American(ya MEI li jian) Republic(gong he guo)".
@@jackshen5093 I'm white boy American and I hope not but think we're screwed. Just watching good comedy at the end of work to relax.
THIS. When he said we call America “the beautiful country” I was like WHAT. It never carried that meaning and is literally just the abbreviation of a phonetic translation that was too long and too verbose for daily usage.
Isn't China called the Middle Kingdom because it's supposed to be between Heaven and Earth?
Ooo that’s interesting. Did you study in SJK(C)?
Okay, now I am sure there are basically two types of parents - rich white and the rest of the world. I am literally relating to Filipinos, Lebanese, Mexicans, Vietnamse and everyone else. We all here are just getting slapped on our birthdays. 😂

I mean if you’re comparing to them to upper middle class, wasp type white people, I guess. Eastern European and Italian parents not so much.

Aah, my bad for clubbing all in one category! I meant to say the typical upper-class American white parents that we, here in the east, hear about.
Ya, cause cultures can't have differences or similarities, you can't share mods, emotions, ways if freaking with things, behaviours etc. No only Chinese parents can be strict & stingy...
I guess my chilean parents are white, then.

Mexican American fighter

Jo Koy's sweatshirt/ overalls/ nike outfit actually looks pretty fire lmao
Even in the UK asian community we had this thing called "birthday beats" where your friends and siblings would hit you (*lightly*) for every year of your age. Meaning if you're a late teen with a lot of friends, you are going to get battered throughout your birthday.
It is really strange to me to find out that this is exactly the same in Switzerland, in my Swiss community.
Well, I’m from a village, so the beatings were mostly everyday, but I know that in my city 20minutes away, it was exactly as you said.
What is strange is that as a we Swiss, we’re not really warm to each other at least, we’re not really feisty either,
but when you leave in a city and it’s your birthday, you got to beware when you’re in your own neighbourhood.
Yeah Birthday Bumps is what we called them, definitely not confined to the Asian community in the UK. Similar tradition would be ‘A pinch and a punch for the first day of the month’ every time the month rolled over :D
This reminds me of elementary and middle school
“It’s your birthday Foo?!”
Then they would hit you as many times as how old you were turning hahah
Birthday licks
So Manny is the weird uncle that every Filipino has
"My auntie always greets me with an insult." Hahahaha yes
Jo koy is just too hilarious man.
I bet Ronny Chieng knows perfectly well that the Chinese name for China means way more than "middle country", but then his joke would not work.
I assume it's more like "country at the center of the world", something less about location and more about value

Dang, so Chinese named their Country: Middle Earth way before LoTR
Chinese have multiple meaning.
"middle" is also central/focus. Aka king/heart of asia. And it's not earth, guo is country.
Also, for america, it's probably because of the pronunciation and language barrier. There is no real basis that ancient china think america is a beautiful country.

She has two daughters. She talks about them on her Instagram page.

Ronny is Malaysian born chinese he doesn't know the nuances. it's a direct translation for a joke.
pretty sure Ronny's joke was about direct translation, no ounce of history or politics included.
