Why We Say 'Memento Mori'
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 15 янв 2025
- You may have heard the phrase memento mori (remember your death)-especially if you hang out with those strange Catholics-but did you know there are three meanings woven into those two words? Sure, the immediate thought that comes to mind may be the fact that someday we will die; and this is good to remember because that day could be any day, so we should live accordingly.
What people may not recognize, though, is that memento mori could also be a reminder to the Christian that we have died to ourselves, so that we may gain eternal life in Christ. As St. Paul says, “I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live but Christ who lives in me” (Galatians 2:20). The life you live is not your own. Remember, as a Christian you have died to yourself. Entering your day with that in mind may be difficult if you want to live for yourself, but it could also be liberating if we give everything to God.
Thirdly, it is good to “remember your death” because it is a reminder of the joy that will come when we live with Christ for eternity. Remembering our death in that way can fill us with the strongest kind of hope.

In 1992 I found my brother after he shot himself in the head with his .357 magnum revolver. Two years later , my step dad died of a heart attack, and there was nothing I could do. In August of 2014, my beloved mum, died of Non Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease. In November 2014, my best friend, my beloved wife, passed away in hospital after a prolonged sickness. I am well acquainted with our mortality. I have a sterling silver ring, with a skull and Momento Mori engraved on it. It reminds me to live as if any day may be my last. Rather than being morbid, I find it comforting.
What a powerful testimony you have! Thank you for sharing! But I’m am very sorry for your losses and sadness. May His peace be with you. 🙏🏼❤️
Awwww 😔 I'm so sorry. God bless you. God loves you. Pray without ceasing brother
May peace always always be near and close to you brother. May the Most Holy Spirit comfort you and sustain you. Thank you for sharing.
Wow! Love to you dude x
God love you
I'm atheist but I'm fascinated by scripture. I'm normally very critical of religious people but I have to say I love your approach and attitude. We need more fathers like you. Keep doing what you do.
Atheist like you are quite refreshing
Not an atheist here but an agnostic, and I have to endorse him; I love his approach and he sounds really cool. You're doing great father
I'm very critical of so called atheists due to the tendency of them to lie and twist reality ona whim and respond emotionally instead of realistically. Y'all also always rely on a christian world view to attempt at arguing against it
@@jonathansoko5368 This is not true. Faith rely on emotions, so you could say that religious people tend to rely on emotions but the facts. As far as I can tell, most of atheists stick to facts of the real world, the facts that they can see or prove (rather true or false).
Atheist people see the world as it is not as their emotions tell them.
As a believer I appreciate your commitment and how respectfully you placed it. Read the scriptures and just ask Christ to reveal them to you. Much love you to you!
I started crying as soon as Fr Mike said as Christians, we have already died in Jesus Christ ... really going to reflect on “Memento Mori” from now on. Thank you and God Bless You Father Mike. ❤️
Memento Mori thank you mitzi
🤯🙌🏼
I’m Muslim but after listening to you I’m relieved and I wanna become more faithful and prepare for the day of judgement
What a comfort this message is to me as a Catholic that I can wear my momento morí ring again. Thank you, Father.
I never knew till recently the tradition of skull symbolism in the Church and the memento mori going back eons. It’s fascinating how rich our traditions are. We usually see skulls representing other things but Catholics….”that’s ours and we’ll give it a good meaning”
This is beautiful. Thank you. I’m nearly 70 years old & have had a ‘Memento Mori’ tattoo on my upper left arm for exactly the reasons you describe. It was wonderful listening to your very articulate presentation. Thank you again.
YOU QUOTED HAMILTON!!! You’re officially my favorite priest
That's what made you like this priest?!? LOL!!! 🤣🤣
Technically Hamilton quoted something historical lol
"I am kind of a professional pray-er" my sides are hurting from laughing so hard
I personally love the couple of “Memento mori memento vivere,” remember your death and remember to live. Make the best out of what you have in perspective.
So I'm Mexican and this is the first time I watch one of your videos due to I discovered this word "momento mori" on a book named "El hombre Superfluo" from Ilija Trojanow and I was just curious about that and here I am... A new (and a good one) subscriber. Bless you. Oh and I'm also Catholic. ;)
All my life when I used to think of my death I was indused with an uneasy feeling and sometime I used to cry because I dont know this feeling of death but looking at this preaching gives me confidence and restored my Faith .. God bless you Father 🙏❤
Love from India!!!
Memento Mori -“remember death”
Why you ask?
Because..
death gives life meaning
Memento Mori
Yes! Thank you so much for this video, Fr Mike! I wear skulls everyday for this very reason. So many Catholics think the skull is a symbol of evil, and I have to keep showing them images of the saints depicted with skulls to inform them that the skull is a VERY catholic image. We HAVE to remember death. We cannot act as though we will live forever. We will be held accountable on the Last Day. Thank you for this wonderful opportunity to evangelize fellow Catholics who've not been taught some of our traditions, like Memento Mori. God bless, and Happy Advent! 💀💀💀
So true, the profile pic I just started using happens to be Saint Francis in contemplation with a skull, it’s a beautiful symbol and I think it’s a shame it has negative connotations nowadays.💀💀💀
@@Orfiad Right on, Daniel! Use it proudly. St Francis is just one of a number of saints depicted with skulls, and I'm so glad you recognize that. Let's reclaim our symbols and remind our fellow Catholics that it's not about "feeling good, anything goes," but "we're gonna die and meet Jesus and it might be a good idea to live as Christ taught us." Merry Christmas, Daniel! Memento Mori! 🎄💀
Khrisha Blackwell Merry Christmas, Momento Mori, and God Bless!
Sedlec Ossuary in the Czech Republic.
@@khrishablackwell We also should reclaim the Pentagram which is a Christian symbol for the 5 wounds of Christ.
I discovered Momemto Mori earlier this year while studying the philosophy of Stoicism. Like Catholicism, Stoicism is very deep and profound and most compatible with our faith.
Greetings from Costa Rica, I enjoy every moment I see these videos. Every time I watch you Fr. Mike you renew my faith. God bless you!
I never heard it like this to remember that we have already died in Christ. I love this because if dead men fear nothing that includes life. to begin to live joy right now in☀ anticipation of Heaven with JESUS!!!
THANKYOU Father Mike🎄🎁💖the darkness feels a little lighter right now.
i am going to recall this video everyday☀.
There's a big big big mistake with this! Memento mori, literally, means "remember that you WILL die".
The translation in "remember that you HAVE DIED" it's unacceptable, and all the consequent interpretations of convenience!
It was a quote borned in the ancient Roma, to let the Generals, who were returning from the victories, be always humble and never superb or feel unvincible!
@@michelangeloamicone1938 oh i did not know but does this mean i should not think of the quote in the way of, 'remember that
we have died' ?
Well, I think you should not, with all respect.
The problem is that you start from a wrong translation, letting it be totally different from the real meaning for what the quote was really born.
Clearly, that's my opinion (about the interpretation, not about the translation that's not an opinion) ... You are obviously free to take you own interpretation!
@@michelangeloamicone1938 I appreciate your knowledge and thank you. The interpretation Father Mike gives has been helpful for me on a personal level. But it is good to know the literal translation 💕
I shared this with my mom! Thank you Father Mike!
This is beautiful. It is very special to me, because I actually got baptised (adult baptism in a protestant church) on the day of 'dead rememberance', 4th of May in the Netherlands, when we remember everyone who died in war for our country, (mostly WW2 but also other wars in which the Netherlands played a role). Therefore my baptism was already tied to the death in a way. The 5th of May is Liberation day. I used to think it would be better if that would be the day I got babtised, because it is a liberation. Now I do think that christians, or at least protestants, focus to much on the freedom that is been given in the new life and to less on the dying of the old self and that we shouldn't live like that anymore. Thank you for making me remember.
I sought conversion a month ago and a friend asked me why and I said God is calling it's not my choice anymore. Thank you for your help and thank God.
Allelujah but brother always remember that we are free so it is your choice too, God won't impose on you any pressure, but He is definitely eager to embrace you in His Arms every second of every day and to eternity . AMEN!
God wants you. But will not force you. When you are ready God will embrace you and welcome you back.
Wow " Memento Mori " I didn't know about it. Such a great word to remember all my life . Really, thank you Father for all your videos. Everytime I watch your videos, I feel like something was missing here in order to strengthen my faith in GOD !
Than you
Wisdom through story - well done Father!
Father Mike thank you for your words of life. So much wisdom and comfort and understanding for me.
Hi Father, this is so helpful. Im struggling with fear of death and anxiety. The fear and worries that I feel are eating up my joy. I thank God for this video.❤
This reminds me of the mummified person at Pompeii. ..i'm thinking that we are all to remember those before us...and not to repeat the mistakes of the past. ..Amen
Thank you so much for this Father. You truly are a blessing in disguise
Thank you for sharing Mike
"Dead men fear nothing"...
"La vida no vale nada, muertito"
Yeah, because they’re f****** dead
@@avaccian629 Yeah you completely missed the point of that quote.
Dead men are anxious about nothing
Because of recent events, this phrase has been rolling around in my head lately. Thank you for this video. I shared this video and think it might be beneficial to many people if pastors and other priests passed on your positive perspective to their congregations.
I have always had a fascination with the macabre and memento mori is one of my favorite quotes. Thank you Father for giving me an entirely new and deeper perspective on its meaning. I didn't know priests and nuns used to greet each other this way!
I have been practicing this for a few years now and actually started doing it before I knew it even had a name. It was a relief that has been a long time practice and I wasn't totally weird. I have been looking for a good way to explain this to friends and family and really loved your expression of it in this video. That is exactly what it is for me. I especially like the reminder of the part about being already dead, so what do I have to fear. That is a powerful connection in this. Thank you!
I was familiar with the memento mori rings from the Victorian era when people were given rings in memory of the person that died. This video gave me a whole different perspective of the phrase and meaning. Thank you. Finding your video was when I was fact checking the history of memento mori. The history was that Roman Generals who returned from a triumphant military victory would get the most coveted honor of being paraded though the streets. Riding in the chariot standing behind the general was a slave whose sole purpose during the procession was to whisper in the general's ear, "Respice post te. Hominem te esse memento. Memento mori!" (Look behind. Remember thou art mortal. Remember you must die!). I really enjoyed your video!
Thank you Father Mike. I've been struggling all semester with death. This has been so helpful
I´m watching this during this pandemic times and I just feel good to know that this memento Mori is not a bad thing, but a constand remider about how fragil is life and how we are going to overcome this situation.
I watched this at least a year ago and I still watch it over and over again and I recommend it all of the time!
I don’t typically agree with the Catholic Church in some aspects but this man is very in-depth he’s very knowledgeable and he speaks very well he’s probably one of my favorite priests and I will continue watching his videos
Great one Fr Mike. I have seen Mememto Mori on Stotic site's. I didn't remember Catholics used the same saying. Both use it for the same reason. To live your life as best you can keeping the values you hold dear to you alive. But us Catholics/Christians have the second way of looking at it. Like Fr Mike said, we have already died in Christ. Our death and resurrection has been purchased through the death and resurrection of Christ. We shouldn't fear the future as we are already dead. And reborn again. Given a second chance to make it the best. Although this is three years old, it is powerful stuff. Thanks again for all you do Father Mike.
This was incredibly powerful! "Dead men fear nothing"..... just wow. That pierced right through me.
I just seen you appear on THE LAST POPE on The History Channel!! It was such an AWESOME SURPRISE!! You are such an amazing priest and beautiful soul, Fr. Mike. Thank you for all that you do for all of us! You are such an awesome speaker! 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
This actually made finals week a lot more peaceful!! Thank you!!
also, the ego death that has brought us closer to god through our human incarnation.
i loved and needed this
As an atheist, I often like to discuss religion with people of faith, culture is still culture no matter what opinions may be. I think you are the kind of priest I would enjoy the conversation very much. By the way, "living as if you were already dead" is also a part of samurai culture, you will find that in the "Hagakure", the way of the samurai. Also as a tatto artist, I have tattoed "Memento mori" many times, and I do think it comes close to "Carpe diem" in terms of philosphical meaning, in a darker way. (I love latin since I went to a Jesuit school). I enjoyed watching your video. Bonne Continuation.
thank you. the first video of yours that I have seen. It gives me comfort to learn that you exist. The unknown humanity seems better somehow.
thanks!
Happy 2nd week of Advent- talk about be the light! Wow - fantastic, tear-jerking sermon! I always come away inspired by the words the Holy Ghost gives you to say father and on such a wide and relevant range of topics....You truly are in the right place at the right time. I pray that you know exactly how much good you are doing for the social media realm. May God continue to richly bless your ministry and all those who are making it possible, in Jesus' name amen
I needed this today. Thank you for posting this video. I happened across it by accident but I’m glad I did. I would like to start the day from now on asking “Lord, what do you need from me today?” If I’m a Christian I also assume I’m living this life in Christ’s image or should strive to do so, therefore the things I do every day are not simply for me, I am doing God’s work by helping to heal people. I’m a physician and to be honest today I felt a little defeated at the end of the day. I get caught up in always trying to do the best for everyone I see. It’s exhausting sometimes. But I need purpose in order to keep pushing forward. We all do. This is my purpose. This helped me today as a person and as a Christian. Thank you for your insightful explanation of this concept and explaining the history behind it as well.
FR Mike, thank you for your words. I have been using that phrase for quite a long time now. In fact I had a few rosaries made for myself and my son, along with a wrist 10 bead rosary. Daily reminder of Moment Mori as I pray my rosary.
I really appreciate these videos that you do father thank you
“See I never thought I’d live past 20. Where I come from some get half as many.” Hope you’ve seen that genius of a musical if not will get to one day. Momento Mori, Father!
I loved this so much fr I will practice and meditate Memento Morí more often now thank you !! God Bless and Happy Guadalupe feast !✨🇲🇽(:
Father Mike, this is amazing and so helpful! I listened to your homily from the first Sunday in Advent when you said to live this Advent like you're going to die on Christmas. I was like, nah, too sad. But now I'm having a bunch of stuff come up this Advent that's really forcing me to think about my death. This video is just what I needed to hear. Thank you for all you do!
THis gave me chills! thank you!
Indeed.
I remember the phrase Memento Mori as an episode from the X-files some twenty years ago...never gave it much thought until recently when a serious health issue cropped up. Thank u Fr Mike for all your inspiring videos. They help me see reason through recent tough times.
Memento Mori
To me personally, reminds me to be the best person I can be everyday. This means having no regrets; sharing, donating to the less fortunate; having been forgiven of sins, of past mistakes.
Essentially, being ready to leave this physical world and join him in the Kingdom.
Not only does it help me be more devoted as a Catholic, but I'm also just trying be a better person.
Thanks for the video, I appreciate the podcasts as well!
I knew this because I took Latin in middle and high school :D but I am catholic now so it makes so much sense. Thank you for all your videos. Clear, precise, accurate and always fun
Father your videos are really getting me in line. I loved the "im a night person" zing...on one of them. Thank you for your videos!!!!
Father! Please help me! I purchased a memento mori rosary, one with little metal skulls for the decades, recently so that when I say the rosary I can contemplate my own death daily (I pray the rosary daily) and the eventual reunion with my mother who died in January. My sisters saw my rosary when I was not there and claimed I was worshiping Satan, that I was making a mockery of the faith, I was dishonoring my mother and that I must be deemed evil and essentially cast out. Even my very Catholic sister, whom I thought would understand told me she didn't believe I acquired my rosary in good faith. Please, Father, help me with this. Anyone. They are trying to convince my father that I am evil! I feel so lost. They also threw away my rosary.
I remember death so much it feels just like a memory, when’s it gonna get me. In my sleep or seven feet ahead of me.
Ahh Hamilton
When it comes will I run or will I let it be is it like a beat without a melody
@@SomethingSmellsMichy see I never thought I'd live past 20 where I come from some get half as many
Needed this. Daily life gives me anxiety. Thank you Fr Mike.
Thank You Fr. Mike! Due to getting Baptism at such on early age (most people get it before 12 yrs of age), we often disregard the significance of Baptism in Jesus Christ. All baptized Christians should not fear death & are able to withstand ALL temptations by receiving God's graces "properly" b/c Jesus Christ has redeemed us, though we still have to live and walk with the Lord in everyday life through profound prayer life. As a Catholic myself, I think both "proper" prayer and Seven Sacraments are as equally as important, redirecting our lives to Jesus Christ, believing all of His Words and expressing our gratitude for His infinite Graces (Bible, Seven Sacraments, Prayer). Thank you for all of your kind videos. God bless Father Mike.
I. LOVEDDDDDDDD. THIS!!!! Loved loved loved!!!!!
Why
_I imagine death so much it feels more like a memory_
HAMILTOOOOOON! My Shot!
GREAT teaching WISDOM!
I think about death every day but you put a new slant on my thinking with your comments. Thank you!
lol at the Hamilton shoutout. In all seriousness, what an awesome message! It truly is profound. I want to live my life in joyful service of the Lord preparing for my death--at which time I hope to be fully united with God in His Kingdom. Amen!
So awesome! Started off with a trivial example of a tattoo to explain something so profound. In a podcast FrMike you stated "Prepare to die" and I have meditated on it all through this Advent. Well said...one day its going to be THE FINAL DAY on this planet. Preparing for it is essential. What struck me most was...dead to thd past...living fearless, anxiety-less!
Learned about this from a band that had a member pass from cancer who wrote a song titled this before passing. I've experienced a few deaths of close friends over the past couple years from natural causes. I think I now know what my first tattoo will be.
Architects. Much love.
“I’m kind of a professional prayer...” 😂
not his first rodeo
Wow, Fr. Mike, that was very insightful and reflective. Hmm, for the first time I'm thinking past tomorrow.
Thank you for sharing this important message...first time hearing this phrase 'memento mori'...
I bought this wristband from a company called ZOX and they were selling these Wristbands and they were selling three of them they could be completely anything and the one that I opened said memento mori On the wristband I didn’t know what that meant so I looked it up and I found your video and it makes so much sense father I really appreciate you doing what you’re doing and thank you father
Thank you so much for your teaching you are a blessing to my mind and heart.
Thankyou, so much Father. This was profound and so needed. It is too easy to live on auto pilot.
You are super likable! Love this!
Happy birthday Father!! God bless you always!!
Thank you father I really needed to hear this🙏🏻🙌🏻😎
Greetings from the UK F.M Well done for continuing to carry on with the video recording since your collar was throttling the life out of you! 😇 I love that line from *Lin Manuel-Miranda's Hamilton.* It's amazing to me that as a teenager he spoke those words, with only imagination to bear weight upon them. But yet in the last Act, he is actually dying so the words end up coming to fruition.
Loved this video, thanks for share the way you think about it
Thank you . Such a nice video makes me understand more about memento mori.
I remember this from a painting, my theolgy class, and from the book: A Series of Unfortunate Events.
Hello Father,
I was wondering if you could do a video on Grace addressing some of the following points: What is Grace? How does one obtain Grace? How do we know we're in a state of Grace?
Thank you so much, and may God bless you and your wonderful work
HAMILTON OMYGOSH UR LITERALLY NOW MY FAVORITE HUMAN BEING. FR. MIKE THX FOR KEEPIN IT REAL 👌👌
LOL. Funny beginning. Don't tell Mom. Interesting. Skull. Loving your sister and blessing was really, blessing her.
Memento Mori. I have been collecting Mexican Day of the Dead figures for forty years now. They include a married couple, a priest, a nun, some drunks, a snack vendor, musicians, Zapatistas, a dog, a cat, a cow, and many, many others. Many of the little folk art figures make me laugh, but thay all serve to remind me that Death comes to all of us, and so we must be prepared for it. When I was teaching CCD classes to third-graders in 1999, they one day asked me if it was true that the world was going to end on New Year's Day. (Remember Y2K?) I was surprised that kids that young were so worried. I did my best to ease their worries, but also felt very blessed when I was able to bring them to the conclusion that the world can end for any of us at any moment, so we must always be prepared. I hope that lesson stuck, and tht it sticks for me.
The specific quote is actually “the battle of Yorktown”
I IMAGINE DEATH SO MUCH IT FEELS MORE LIKE A MEMORY, THIS IS WHERE IT GETS ME- ON MY FEET THE ENEMY AHEAD OF ME... etc.
thank you Fr. Mike this is a wonderful video!!
Great video Father! You referenced Hamilton but the line is found in two songs "My Shot" and then more profoundly in "The World Was Wide Enough."
Eu tenho sempre pensado desta maneira. Eu já estou morto. Sempre me lembro de uma cena de Band of Brothers onde o soldado amedrontado escuta esta frase e assim cria coragem para enfrentar a morte
Thank you for this!
I just love Fr. Mike!! :)
HAMILTON REFERENCE SPOTTED - "My Shot", "The World Was Wide Enough", and "Yorktown (The World Turned Upside Down)" :D
ngl it would be so much fun if you made random pop culture references in every video haha...but seriously, great video Father Mike! It really helped me put things back into perspective ^_^
#askfrmike
Hi father,
First let me say your videos are always super interesting and I always get something out of each one. I can honestly say I’ve probably watched them all at least twice.
Father my question pertains to our view as Catholics on charismatic Christians or charismatic Catholics.
I recently visited a charismatic church with a friend of mine. I was so impressed and moved by the presence of the Holy Spirit during their “worship service” It was if I was experiencing it for the first time. Everyone in the church hard their hands raise and there was this awesome feeling of unity and worship. It wasn’t long before I joined the congregation. As the worship team sang I felt this overwhelming need to raise my hands and as I did it was as if I was being carried away. It was so liberating and completely new.
Some people spoke in tongues which was also a first for me.
I had experienced the moving of the holy sprint in the past but not to this degree. After the service was over I started thinking about it and I wondered what the church teaches about this style of worship and praise. Are we as Catholics permitted to worship in this manner. Obviously it doesn’t take place in mass so I’m curious about this now.
I hope I was articulate with my question
Thanks in advance father
GOD BLESS
#askfrmike: Hello, I've been watching your videos and listening-to/reading from many other sources. Big fan! I was wondering if you could do a video on Orthodox christianity. As of lately I have had thoughts about conversion to Catholicism. The only thing that holds me back is the Orthodox. Coming from a lukewarm christian household, the devoutedness of an average churchgoer is impressive. I also struggle with many of the disputes from The Great Schism. I know this concerns a huge number of topics, so even a recommendation for books on this subject would be great!
Great video btw!!!!!
Research Dr. Scott Hahn, he has a lot of good videos here in RUclips!
Hello friend, don't wait for too long, come in, it's wonderful. Look up Bishop Sheen videos, Marshall Taylor, Patrick Coffin etc... I've been a practising Catholic since I was 7!! It's a fabulous road to follow, not always easy it's true, but fabulous. I'll pray for you. Happy Christmas.
I feel you Savannah, I’m in the same situation. I’ve been reading St Mark of Ephesus and debates about the Filioque, and I am actually coming out more on the Orthodox side of things. But then there’s the Papacy, which I’ve read about and haven’t found arguments against that have convinced me. There’s just so much history to sift through on both sides, it’s really hard to get to the bottom of things 😭. Prayers for your journey through this! 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
Savannah,
Great questions! When I became a Christian, I was most attracted to Orthodoxy and the more traditional groups in Catholicism (Tridentine Mass crowd), but after a lot of research, I was able to definitively conclude in favor of Catholicism. I now live in an Orthodox country and it has only further confirmed my choice of now a few years ago.
1. Orthodoxy, unlike the apostolic tradition and Sacred Scripture, allows divorce and remarriage up to 3 times (the Catholic Church consistently believes that divorce does not exist). This is a glaringly obvious error of Orthodoxy (and a later Christian development officially sealed after the Great Schism) that, after a few years of asking nearly everyone in Orthodox I could, has received no real response, because there isn't any.
2. Orthodoxy (and to a degree the Eastern Rite Catholic Churches that are in full communion with Rome) is more like an ethnic club. There is not a lot of missionary zeal and people outside of the ethnicity are not usually welcome.
3. The way that Orthodoxy is set up, it's basically impossible to create new dioceses in non-Christian lands...so there's no serious evangelization/missions...If you look at America, for example, dozens of Orthodox bishops in Eastern Europe claim jurisdiction over America, it's very strange and very foreign to historical Christianity.
4. Orthodoxy historically claimed that Constantinople deserved the "primacy of honor" because it was the new capital of the Roman Empire, so it deserved Rome's traditional place. Given that Constantinople no longer exists and is now the Muslim Istanbul, one could argue that Orthodoxy in its traditional form no longer exists as well.
5. The Filioque is not really an issue. The Orthodox are right in the sense that everything that the Son has comes from the Father, but this does not mean that the Holy Spirit does not also proceed from the son. Even in the Nicene Creed we say the Son is "God from God" and "consubstantial with the Father", so if they are of the same substance, how does the Holy Spirit not proceed from both? There are also numerous Scripture, such as "I am sending a Helper"...etc.
6. The devoutness of Orthodoxy in America is likely due to the zeal that certain ethnicities have to preserve their identity...in Russia, where 75% of the population is Orthodox, only like 2% of the population actually goes to church every Sunday and abortion, cheating, etc, are rampant. Christianity around the world is suffering under the heresy of Modernism, and the more traditional groups of Catholics (FSSP, SSPX, etc) are the most outspoken against this heresy.
7. Orthodoxy does not value reason. If I present the above arguments to an Orthodox, they will only respond that I am being "too rational" and that the faith is not an "intellectual position". Reason is a source of truth, and I do not think that Orthodoxy really values the truth in its rejection of reason...nor will it be able to fight what ails the modern world without the tool of reason.
There are several other things that I could say, but that should be a good start to your research! God bless you!
@@mollywithak1697 I just responded in some depth below. I hope it will help you in your research and discernment.
Hay looking for prayers we got finals coming up this week any prayers would be great:) God bless you
Haha. Fr. Mike, I guess this quote is from Lin-Manuel's song "My Shot"...
It comes up a lot in the musical
I have heard this a few times, I think specifically from Matt or Cameron Fradd recently
Marcus Aurelius said the old us constantly dies and is dead in the past.
The Bible says the old man dies and we live in the new man through Christ
I end my prayers with it 🕯️
Gonna get Momento Mori tattooed on me today 😁😁😁
Wow! Just Wow! This has to be one of my favorite videos. I'm already dead I have nothing to fear.
