The best way I found to kill the sound of the engine believe it or not was to dynamat the underside of the hood... give it a try

You got to think they are just "Huge resonator" and if you don't do the fire wall behind the dash and the exterior parts of the door and outer panels you will not achieve what you hoped. I went as far as the all outer sheet metal I could access. Second layer on inner also and removed the dash and covered the firewall up to wind shield, the pillars, Head Liner, AC Unit Box etc. It does make a difference, I can now talk instead of yelling to have a conversation with passenger's. I drive a Excursion 7.3 $350 dollars later in materials I couldn't be happier

I have thought about this in about 12 years. When I was in high school I always wanted to dynamat (think that’s what it was called) my whole car just to see how well it keeps the sound in from my subs and eliminate the outside sounds. Thanks RUclips hole for this video. And you did great on that truck! Clean job

Interested in winning! - Check for any penetrations in the firewall too(aftermarket wiring for alarms, lights, air horns and gauges). Earlier 7.3L (99-2001) also had issues around the steering shaft where noise would come through (can see light). Shine a flood light in engine compartment at night and look up under the dash. If you see light, then noise will travel through very easily, and is the main culprit. Also, do the surgical tubing through the door weather stripping mod. Will seal the doors better too.
Would love this kit to start on my 7.3 Excursion. Will need to buy more from them to fit the Ex

  • @onlymyopiniontech
    @onlymyopiniontech 9 месяцев назад

Most people miss the biggest source of noise, the hood.
The noise comes up through the hood and in through the windshield. I know it doesn't seem like it would matter but give it a try. That helps explains why the db meter at the steering didn't show much improvement.
Doing the cab will go a long way especially to the general "sound quality" of the cab when closing doors but to reduce engine noise the hood and front fender wells have to be included.

  • @NickAm01

Bet that dynamat and foam soaked up a of those vibrations and gave that truck a more premium feel. From a sound deadening perspective, many manufacturers are using acoustic grade windshields (thicker glass) to help with noise. My 2018 Titan floats around the mid 60's while on the highway.

  • @stevohmelike
    @stevohmelike 3 года назад

Definitely a great job. You did a massive difference regardless.
Here’s my tip. Remove dash, and finish putting the deadening there. BUT. Coat the back of the dash panels. Highly important. I will be doing mine, I’ll try to tag you on it. A couple months. I’ll keep you in mind.

DYNAMAT! I used "Dynamat" on my 05 Chevy and now I did my entire 97 CCLB4x4 7.3 in it. Over that I put "Dynapad". I probably spent twice what he did but the difference is night and day! Before it I could not barely hear my chick talking while driving...now I can hear her complaining even when she speaks quietly. Also, my sterio sounds 100% cleaner. No offense to Killmst but do your research...spend the extra cash if you're going to do it (cuz it is a big job) and go Dynamat!!

Firewall both sides, hood, and ceiling, you've done the rest. Believe me, I had a 2000 international with a 12.7l Detroit and I had the exhaust WITH a muffler. Road noise was was as bad as the motor and turbo. I blew the stock turbo after 900k miles, so I put the biggest one that would fit.

If you want to reduce the sound of the engine, the best way is to add insulation/sound barrier to the firewall between the cab and engine bay. Unfortunately there's rarely room to install paneling behind the dash.

I recently put my 7.3 back on the road after letting it sit with a bad transmission for a couple of years. I have owned it since 2008 and it currently has over 430,000 Km on it(close to 270K miles). I have a Bully Dog programmer installed, K&N Filter, Turbo-back Magnaflow exhaust, and many of the front end parts have been replaced. I found a good deal on a used transmission (crossing my fingers), watched all the 4R100 re & re videos on RUclips and got to work in my driveway this spring.
I was hoping for some assistance but other than a couple of lifts on and off of the transmission jack I did it all myself. The transmission jack needed a mod due to the deep pan on the 4R100 so I made a 2x6 wooden frame to go around the pan with a notch for the gear selector. A piece of OSB to make the bottom of the box so it would be rigid ,and a couple more lengths of 2x6 to support it, bolted it to the transmission jack, and I was good to go.
It took me a weekend to get it out working at a leisurely pace, then I had to get some more parts to complete the job. I realized I would need a new torque converter as it was full of bad tranny fluid, and on closer inspection I saw a decent sized chunk of loose metal inside. I flushed and back-flushed the transmission cooler repeatedly with 4 cans of Lubegard Kooler Kleen, installed a new internal filter and almost 20 litres of new transmission fluid. So it was a few weeks later when I finally got it all back together.
I installed fresh batteries and went to turn the key and... nothing happened. Rechecked the starter and all my connections, but everything seemed fine electrically. I decided to try the gear selector switch from my old tranny as this part also tells the ignition system its ok to engage the starter in P and N positions. I didn't fully install it, just fooled the system by connecting it and letting it hang. Turned the key and the old girl started right up. Big relief!
I finished installing the selector switch and it was time to check fluid levels and go for a test drive. Everything shifted well and I am satisfied that this used but previously rebuilt transmission was a good investment and that my project has been successful. I've probably put about 1500 km on the truck since the install and done some camping and even had occasion to use the 4 wheel drive.
As I've been driving, often at highway speeds, I've noticed the sound levels inside the cab are much higher than I remember. About this same time your series of videos on soundproofing your rig came out. I'm very interested to give the KILMAT and NOICO products a try as I'm sure they will make a big difference in the noise and comfort levels of my resurrected 7.3 litre.
    Cheers! IG @66rmurray

Hey Joe! I am interested. I would like to gift this and the work to my brother on his truck. I did the killzmat on the back wall and the floor of my 02 cc. Did the back wall only a while back. But finally after seeing you start this project, I decided to just man up and finish mine. I did the floor in one night. Took me about 7 hours. Put the seats back in the next morning. Didn’t have a lot of time to spare. On mine, I double layered the trans tunnel on top and both sides. Cruising is where I noticed the biggest difference in sound level (to my ears). And a big difference I noticed was the heat in the cab. Much less heat and I’m able to cool the cab even better when I’m down in Phoenix! Very worth it for me.
Keep up the good work. Seeing you starting this project is what finally motivated me to get mine finished 💪🏻.

About 6 months ago I purchased by dream truck (2000 4x4 f350 7.3 crew cab 8’ bed) I couldn’t afford to purchase a fully operating truck so this one has 400,00 miles and the original motor was toast. It’s either that or I buy a motorhome and have it converted to four-wheel-drive, but then I wouldn’t have a diesel so my only choice is to find a diesel truck with an extra cab like yours and do all of the things that you did on your truck. Good job! I have done plenty of sound deadening and it makes a big difference...Specially if you a sound system which will make huge improvement...You should have done the roof also...The oxymoron is a lot of people add a loud exhaust, cold air intake, and nubby tires which create a massive amount of noise, then want to quite it down with 75 lbs of sound deadening....Yes I want the sound deadening for my next project!!! This is the exact brand name of product I have researched to be the best bang for the buck...

Yellow expandable foam in all the hollow channels (specifically the minimal expansion pressure foam for doors and windows). Ceiling was flex sealed and 1" fiber insulation. So quiet, so cold in the summer heat

3dB is, mathematically, the doubling point of the sound energy. Since it is a logarithmic scale, you can imagine how that curve looks over time. The human ear has a PERCEIVED sound level doubling between 8-10dB, depending on the individual and what is inducing the noise. And yes, in this case it seems the majority of the noise level is from the engine. A hood liner and fully covering the firewall would make a big difference. The next move, though expensive, would be to put in an acoustic windshield. Acoustic glass makes a HUGE difference in sound levels.

Lots of work but any improvement is worth it if you have the time. One thing is that has my thoughts is that running single-shot injectors will increase the engine noise a tad. All the noise comes through the firewall since the engine is right there, so adding sound deadening there would be most beneficial

Make sure you have something dense under the Hood. If you look at VW TDI's, the under the hood and firewall insulation is very dense were the gasoline counterparts only have standard felt cardboard.

Interested in wining! Found your video when looking for info on sound deadening our 1997 F350 CCLB Centurion Pacifica.
I’ve used similar products at a 40% coverage and it made a big difference. With as much as 80% like you’ve done is a major difference in isolating road noise and other rattles. You did IMO a great job with a lot of effort to back it up. Keep up the good work and videos.

I own a 95 7.3 f350. Crew cab long bed. It’s been my baby for 3 years now. I’ve had my ups and downs with the truck but finally running solid. I feel that I’m in the same boat as you pretty much from the dash back it’s an empty barrel. I would love to see how this product would effect my obs! Keep up the good work.

Instead of the vynal u laid down before your actual carpet you should have used jute underlay carpet . They got all diff thickness or possibly polyurethane foam u could have put in certain places and I guarantee you , you would have seen and heard a bigger difference. Especially since your truck has that diesel sound.. good job though I’ve been doing this stuff myself and your legs do get a lil wobbly and definitely your knees take a beating if your not using actually knee pads and you do get very tired especially if your doing it in harsh weather, I live in AZ and I’ve been doing it in the summer .. winter ,spring and fall best times lol much respect good job .

I’ve always really wanted to add some sound deadening to my 02 CCLB 7.3. Like you I like the loud with the window down but quiet to just cruise and I also hope it will make music sound a bit crisper. I hope to do this at some point regardless of the giveaway results! Thanks for all the awesome content and being active in the comment section of other youtubers I watch! 😎😎👍🏼👍🏼

It would be nice to not have to have the radio up so loud haha. Great video man,I really love what you did with the truck all around. I miss havin a 6.0 sometimes but I do love my 12v

Im Interested. I have a E-99 f350 crew cab. Still need to redo interior and exterior of truck. Done major upgrades to the 7.3 engine roughly a year ago. Very loud in cab. Have owned the truck for 19 years. Had 450,000 miles on truck with stock injectors and only had the valve covers off once to replace what I thought was a bad injector. Turned out to be plug in on valve cover wiring harness. Love my truck. It has been a work horse for me but looking a little weathered. Truck runs awesome with the 205/80 injectors with a t-4 s366 turbo. Need to work on comfort and looks next.

I'm interested! I have an 02 7.3, just finished a 1500 mile trip and had a few conversations with my friend about how loud the engine/ exhaust noise was. I'd probably do the dashboard, doors/ rear, and a single layer over the entire floor, and do a second over the exhaust on the passenger's side.

My dad owns four 7.3L f350s. Love the hell out of them. One of them had the muffler system removed and it was so Damn loud I couldn't hear others speaking in the truck. Not fun. I used to like the noise now I'm tired of it. I just want a 6.7l full deleted with a big muffler to quiet it way down. Give me the performance not the noise.
