Fixing a Broken Spindle in the back of a Chair (WnW #7)

- Here I'm showing one simple method to repair a chair that's had a spindle broken. The repair is quick and easy and nearly invisible when complete.
It's just a basic kitchen chair, not heirloom quality, but that's no reason to throw it out if I can fix it!

Thankyou. My daughters broke my very old kitchen chair. I have my grandparents dinning room set. It was a wedding anniversary present in 1972.
Great fix Art!
Thanks, John! I was making plans for the next project/video and all my ideas were going to mean it'd be a long gap before the next video. Then my wife "dumped" this on me on Thursday and the rest is history.
Small projects can be very satisfying, since you get the feeling of completion so quickly
Small puppies are fond of chewing lower leg braces. They get in the way of running around. Some times funny consequences.
well done, very informative. Great dry sense of humour, too!
Oh wow! Those are the exact chairs I came to look to fix lol
Ive done almost the exact same thing and ive been sitting in that chair for probably 4 or 5 years so if your wondering if itll last it will for sure. Great video Thanks JOE
Thanks, joesjigs ... barring the kids using it for a ladder, we'll probably be fine! :-)
You are right Art, I will never see that blowout. :-)
I'm just happy that I am not the only one that makes an error now and then. Misery love company ya know.
Thanks for sharing the good and the not so good. We all learn from from these things.

thanks for posting. I have a similar chair and it has the same issue. Now I know how to fix it !
I have these exact same chairs and I have the same issue 🤦🏾♀️
I have these exact chairs same issue. Where did you get your chairs from originally?
Sears, circa 1989.
How would you fix that seat if it had a split down the middle and it split in half because the split was so bad
A clean break can just be glued. Glue is stronger than wood. I would probably use dowels to help with alignment and reinforcement.
If it was a messy break - with splintered wood - I would toss it.
Hey Art, why do you use epoxy and not wood glue? Cheers!
This is a long time ago, but best I recal was to fill any gaps in the joint
Let me give you a heads up and google Hyezmar’s Woodworking Bible. I was one of the (lucky?) ones who got a chance to get a draft copy, it looks great!
I have to fix a spindle that is between the chair legs... Suggestions?
In that case I think you first need to get the spindle out.
I have also used this sort of procedure to repair spindles from a staircase railing -- www.wordsnwood.com/2010/spindle/
But in your case the trick might be getting it back in once the job is done. If there is no flex in the chair legs it'll be tough.
I've just placed that task on the bottom of my list...
Tim Spence It may not look the best but you could always drill through the chair leg from the outside to insert a dowel. The existing spindle would be cut flush to the inside of the chair leg. Repair would be similar to what is shown on the video. Just use match the grain of the plug and match the stain as best as possible.

That was exactly what I have done and it worked perfectly!! Thanks so much!!
Tim Spence Glad it worked for you, it's better than putting off the repair.
You can make it yourself, just loook and learn from WoodPrix.
