Unlike that 2Raw2Ride guy, you care about your horses and made the hard decision that Bella needs to go home. Her coat looks like she may have Cushing’s-if so, she should be much happier with treatment. I hope you can have her tested for that if your vet thinks that’s an issue

Hate to see Bella have to go home, But her well being is more important, Way to make the hard decision, Sometimes the best trainer is a good horse that teaches the other horses not to get excited, Pony monsters won't eat them. Can't wait for Bella to get back in shape to help finish this trip.

I’m glad you’re sending Bella home. Good call. Many years ago we had a long rider come through here. She left her horse, a Mustang named Little Boy, with us. She did the right thing for him too. He was way underweight and completely exhausted. She left him here and never came back for him or wanted him so here he stayed. We’re glad to have him too. He’s become a good friend who comes in out of his pasture to be with me every morning and evening while we do chores.
We look forward to hearing about more of journeys. Again, thank you for being aware of Bella’s need to rest.

Glad you showed this, and Bella may be saving some other horses lives. Some time ago I saw an ad for two lovely horses. It said they had traveled across America. I called. A woman (at the barn) told me the story...2 men from Australia had seen a movie or something that made them want to ride horses across the US. They flew in, bought two horses, and rode 25 miles per day every day until they met their goals. The horses were in terrible shape. The woman told me they wore the hooves off. They were both lame. She thought they needed to be put down, yet here was this ad. I'll spare the details, but the story haunts me to this day. The guys basically dumped the horses and left to go back to their country. So glad you realized your horse wasn't able. Anyone thinking of doing this, please talk to some endurance riders to learn how to work up to this level of mileage. It takes months and months of training!

So sorry to see Bella going back home. You are a true horseman sir. Knowing when to say it’s time doesn’t make matters better for you, but it will for her. She will get the rest she needs until she’s needed again. We’ve had to retire several over our lives and it don’t get any easier with the next horse. We were able to find them good homes to help train the next generation of horsemen and women starting out. She still has a lot of weekend trips in her. Now you have something extra special waiting for you at the end of your trip.

You are 100% correct about that. Even when Bella was struggling to keep up these past few weeks, she never complained or resisted. She just kept going. She did her job in showing the world how hardy and useful and hard-working mustangs are and I'm so grateful to her for showing the boys how it's done.

I'm so pleased you put your horse first and recognised your horses have no idea of your ambition. They just live in the moment - I hope Bella regains body condition without problems and enjoys her well earned rest. I'm puzzled (I'm in the UK) why US horse trailers don't have ramps for ease of entering and leaving and partitions to keep the horse from being thrown around in a big trailer when on the move. I hope the rest of your journey is problem-free.

That was not a horse trailer but one for stock like cattle, etc. That said, the horses here are capable of stepping up and over obstacles all the time. Mustangs do that everyday in the wild and these stock trailers carry horses everyday on a working ranch.

@@kellypeterson5771 - Yes, I see that it is the usual way of doing things in the US but all large animals in the UK (if you include sheep and pigs as large as well!) are transported in trailers or lorries (translates as a truck) with ramps. These have non-slip surfaces and form the back or side door - once the animals are loaded, the ramp is raised to lock in place. Our horses can step and jump too! It was just that it has struck me that of the various RUclips channels I have watched, I have never seen a ramp deployed for animals in the US.

I know what your trailers are like in UK where the ramps are part of the back door. What you don’t know about US trailers are the necessary ramps are usually a permanent structure on the farms and at corrals in the field. @@EX5DD

@@EX5DDwe have both types, some have ramps, some are step up. People have their preferences. I prefer a ramp. It’s good to train horses to load and unload on both types

Wow Jake, I thought the worst case scenario, thought she had to be laid to rest. Oh boy. This had me with wells of tears in my eyes, saying goodbye either way is hurting to the heart. Your call was best for the situation, she is beautiful and she did her job graciously and plowed on for many a mile (s), she deserves her rest and lots of love to while away the days until you call her back to join you in the end of your journey ❤ Loads of love and prayers for you now 3!! Press on and safe stepping Jake, be safe ❤.
