Am I cheating on Steve by watching this?
Yes, I’ve reported you! 😂👍🏻
Its his fault for not trying any german EPAs. They are easy to get, and very tasty. Hmm maybe thats it. He is saving his for later, about 30 years or so.
I feel so cheap and used...
Steve seems like the kind of person to have an open arrangement, you’re good to go!!!
"let's get this out on a tray, nice" I've gotten so used to this that now I think all MRE reviewers are going to say it.
Looks great! Seems like Germany feeds their soldiers well. Some of the best friends I’ve made online are from Germany. Sending love to Deutschland from USA!
yeah... well if i remember correctly from my days a type 4 is meant to get you through 2 days. it was kinda fun to watch the vid as a german and yes, that yellow/orange bar went straight into the trash bin. Those could indeed pull your fillings of your tooth out so they were commonly named as "Blombenzieher" and LTs hat to order and remind their boys not to toss them into the bushes.
i remember one particular field training. we temporary camped at a lake with ducks to eat our MREs. for the life of me i cant remember who started it, but we tried to feed the ducks with the "Blombenzieher". It was all fun and giggles until one of them blocked its airways with a too big and too gluey piece. When we realized that it was about to die the fun was over and the medic and two others jumped into the lake for the rescue. The medic succeded to get it out with the help of some tools of his kit just barely in time.
He was not pleased. the LT and the Sarge too.
Lets just say the penalty workout and the penalty march back to the barracks we got for it burned into my memory just like the initial fun feeding the ducks.
Sending greetings back to USA
@@ricwalker6600 No, also a 24h ration. The huge size is due to the packaging. Even in the cold war EPA was using commercial production for the hot meals and jams etc. More bulky then purpose build stuff like MRE
Goes back.
Where in the US are you located?
Had a girlfriend in LA b4.Well actually 31 yrs ago.
"Alright lets get out into the tray."
**boom**
Noice, ohhhhh kay. 😆
@@xkavarsmith9322 No hiss
As you can see these pouches have a nice gusset on the bottom
Randy Santel and Steve need to collaborate. Win before you begin, with a nice hiss.
The card at 2:01 asks to rate the meal. Down below it says: "In order not to jeopardise military safety, do not carry out the survey until you have completed the exercise / mission."
What a great and dedicated mre review!!! Really loved it and the time you took to prepare and actually eat all of the different items! Thumbs up and thanks for this nice and dedicated review!
They had those "Hamburgers" even back then when I served, 30 years ago. They were very popular.
I preferred green beans with potatoes and pork.
Btw: Those "Hartkeks" cookies, we called them "Panzerplatten" (armor plates), were great to start a fire under wet and windy conditions. A little bit of the old shoe polish paste onto the cookie and it would burn like a grill lighter for several minutes.
And when you are out of Ammo just throw them.
@@mrn234
Exactly! 😂
@@mrn234 wow that would be a war crime 😂
@@keoken9078No, the war crime was feeding "Rice with Fruit" to a PoW. We once tried to feed the stuff to a Bentheimer Landschwein (that beast would even try to eat Animl Rights activists) and it refused
Thanks for doing these mre videos your one of my favorite reviewers you have a a good style on how you explain the taste and quality keep up the good reviews I will definitely keep watching thanks again
That is a huge ration! Lots of great components and the bread looked amazing but i love rye bread. White cheese and sausage looked killer. Great review Nathan!
It's specifically what's known as Pumpernickel. It's grist (and sometimes whole grain) rye bread. One of the nice things baout it is that it's very shelf-stable for soft bread. IIRC it holds like 2+ years minimum when tinned.
Hi Nathan,
"Toppits" is a German brand producing "food" foils. Relatively big name here in Europe.
"Schupfnudeln" are a dish from the south-western part of Germany. Originally they are some type of noodles made from potatoes.
BTW, I´m pretty sure both mains are from the "Buss" brand and are pretty easy to purchase in grocery stores. Not the worst stuff.
"Geflügeljagdwurst" - hey, where´s the problem??? *duckandcover* .-) Pretty standard type of German sausage. However normally not made from poultry but beef and/or pork.
I would like to know which brand is the juice. Somebody here who knows which company makes them?
The sesame bar seems to be the new (oldstyle) Hartkeks. I wonder if anyone in the army ever tried to make smoke bombs out of them (we did it from the old Hartkekse back then *lol*)
Nice vid, as always!

Another good review, Nathan. Those mains look great.
If there actually is rice in those burger patties, this would be intentional. Raw rice gets mixed in with the meat. The rice will absorb the water and juices the meat gives off as it cooks. This has the effect of keeping the flavour of the meat in the patty and the expansion of the rice makes the patty less dense. This gets used in making what is generally called "cabbage rolls", which are very popular in Russia, Ukraine, Poland, and Germany.
Harking back to the Croatian ration you reviewed recently. There were the little pots of Podravka brand pastyet. They also do something similar to the geflügeljagdwurst in this ration.
Wow. That is a biggin.... Thanks for another great vid!!!!!
Looks like a great ration pack, some awesome components. I like your Gerber just brought the Prybrid myself.
Thanks Nathan for another great review. I would love to get some of these rations. But.... you know how that goes.
Hello. Lovely review. And nice variety of components. 🙂👋🏻🇨🇦
A great review Nathan as always
That was a huge ration. Great review Nathan and thank you for the shout out.
Thank for watching Art
do not forget: this is a full day ration (3-4 meals) and not one meal like most of the MRE.
During my army time we shared it with the US soldiers 2:1 one EPA worth 2 MRE. And if you weight this and compare, than you understand efficiency.
The tuna was always great...
I've tried a few of these German mres. I'd like to try some newer ones if available
This is definitely one I'd finish! Looks delicious!
Let's get this out onto a tray. Nice!
Great channel! Informative and entertaining.
The german EPA is designed as a 24 hour ration, but it will last for 2 days without any problems. 2 warm meals for lunch, 6 slices of bread (2 slices for breakfast or dinner) with enough meet spread and jam, lots of snacks and beverage powders. Always have a couple of these EPAs in my basement for emergencies. :D The only disadvantage is that the EPAs have no esbit or flameless ration heaters inlcuded, because in the german army the esbit cooker is part of the soldiers personal equipment.
Two days if used as emergency food. If used as designed the 3300-3800kcal are what a soldier will burn during a day of exercises in west germany
Length was fine, I enjoyed watching. In fact I wouldn't have minded a longer video so you could enjoy the food more.
I agree I like when they break it up into meals in the 24 hour rations. Let’s you think about what you would eat with each meal
Since germany has now a professional army, 20 years ago i was a drafti, they changed a lot. Especially the food. I am active reserve now and the food in my last training was amazing( for military standards 😂).
Did a few years in the German Air Force from 1989 until 2001, that exactly same type hamburger in tomato sauce we also had in our EPA, no big change there...
German military structure hasn't changed. They just suspended compulsory service and rely on volunteers only. The compulsory service could be reinstated with no further notice (and, looking at recent developments, might be). The army is no more or less professional than before.
And the EPA hasn't changed much, if at all.
@@DevSolar . I meant the food in mess hall.
But the real question is do they still give you göffel, Gabel Löffel or not
Let’s get this out on a tray! Inneresting! 👍
I always look forward to your videos!
Great review. New to this, but wondered if you can tell how fresh the ration is? Do they have any kind of dates to indicate production date or inspection date? Do the German rations have same shelf life as American ones? Looking forward to getting one.
I love these vids!!!!
Hi Nathan, what an awesome MRE! Lots of food in this MRE. Enjoyed video! 👍😎
With my half forgotten High school German I can squint and figure out what 3/4 of these are for
brotaufstrich, brot= bread auf = on strich didn’t know .... google.... spread!
Spread for bread! Yay!
Thumfisch in Salatcreme ... you know Heinz British salad creme, it’s basically Mayo,
Fisch is fish... turns out thumfisch is just tuna fish... well that’s hardly exotic
I really want to get my hands on a packet of that crazy concentrated coffee powder.
i remember those... Hamburger where allways the favorite EPAs ... get yourself a German messkit the can opener with knife , fork and spoon are of stainless steel.. simply next level stuff.. i still use mine on a daily basis after over 25 years
You can also save up four packs of them and put them in an Old Sock and use it as a backup weapon
Schupfnudeln are great snack food, widespread in southern Germany. You often find them in small stalls at festivals or mobile sellers. Classic variant here is frying them in a pan together with sauerkraut, diced bacon and salt/pepper/herbs to taste.
alter, wegen dir gibts am dienstag schupfnudeln :D
What translator are you using ?? Very cool !!
Was waiting for the hamburger on the bread with the pepper cheese
Curious if you think the jerky would soften up in the bouillon broth and taste good in the soup... great looking meal 😋
heh, these are like muk bang vids, military style! Keep up the great work, I love seeing the different types of food. Greetings from the UK!
Great video and a great review of this 24h mre. It is hard to compare such 24h mre's with the 8h mre's of the USA. I think try out mre's is like trying out what the people likes to eat in this country. Germany has it's bread and sausages. America and England the peanut butter.
I like the drinks in the European mre's more than the stuff out of the US mre' s. US stuff has more this fabric made flavor, specially for the drinks.
I like the look of that bread
Which you using app for automatic translate languages on your phone? I want to find in Google Play store.
thing with the rye bread is the more often you eat it the more you like it, it kinda grows on you. But I can understand the dislike when first trying it :D
Made me hungry that ration was displayed well. Good job ! What menu was it, so I can Oder one. That’s enough food for 2 days
Blimey, our EPAs in the early 90s were a helluva lot less generous. The bicuits went by the informal name of "Panzerkekse" (tank cookies), because it took a Leopard-II tank ro crush them. I never went anywhere near them as I preferred to keep my teeth. The bread went by the name of Atombrot (nuclear bread). You took one tiny bite, it removed all signs of moisture from your body and grew bigger and bigger in your mouth until it threatened to explode your head. One slice filled your stomach for a day.
Main course was usually a tub of chemicals with bits of soil in it, euphemistically called "Roast Beef". Considering the stuff was usually already 6 years old and made for a shelf-life of another 6 years, the taste was usually debatable.
Good old days of sitting in a Biwak on a damp forest floor for the tenth day flat in late October, cooking up a coffee at 6am on your folding Esbit-cooker...
That looks delicious
I've always like German rations. Had some back in the 90's, very similar to the one in the video. More pate back then, and it came in tubes instead of those little cups though. Only downside i see on them is no FRH, so you'd have to have a fire or a camp stove to heat up the mains.
They used to include some dry fuel tablets (called 'Esbit') with the rations and every soldier had a palm sized stove to heat up the meals. You could set it up in no time and make it disappear just as quickly. However, making all that packaging disappear was another story...
@@CDP1861 I think you can still get them but iam not sure. But when you are with the Tank crews they just throw the stuff to the Engine of the tank :D
@@mrn234 Tank crews? Are you serious? Do I smell like mud?
Luftwaffe :-)
What translator app are you using?
Damn. I love Beef Jerky but i've not had a chance to try REAL jerky from the US as it's usually the Jack Links stuff that's in the UK.
Can’t believe all the stuff soldiers get now. Ain’t like the old days
What is that app on your phone you are using in order to read the German language.
What phone app did you use to translate?
Fun fact: Schupfnudeln - a dumpling made from rye or wheat flour and eggs - has been mentioned as typical trooper meal in letters and documents from the 30 years war 1618-1648.
We eat it fried with Sauerkraut and sausages or onions and bacon or cooked in salted milk, spiced with nutmeg and fried onions and bacon as topping.
Hey what no way...I just got my boots off and your already done....new sub...eat slower and longer....oh god that sounds wrong....I mean enjoy the meal lol
Love your POV of MRE
This isn’t an individual single field ration is it? Isn’t it just a pack of ration contents?
I believe þe date printed on þe box isn't for experation but for production. I could be wrong tho.
The hamburgers in tomato sauce looks delicious 😋
As a former german soldier (1993-2009), I must say we had one EPA mostly for 2-3 days.
This should be interesting
Magnificent
Coffee whitener? As in coffee creamer?
yup
I haven't seen anyone try to light matches that way for 40 years. (Using the cover over the match and striker...) I think I was taught early not to do it that way, 'cause the entire book could go up if there was an errant piece of flaming material that came off the match...
American strikers are on the back not the front
Hey what app are you using to translate?
Will this have freedom fries and a liberty steak?
I'm used to watching the other guys. It makes it more interesting if we actually see you eat the food. Just my opinion
what is the name of the app which translates on screen of the camera view?
Google translate
Good video. But I would have rather seen it divided into more of daily meals. You could have covered more of the items. And sometimes the more you eat of a item the more the unpleasant flavors surface.
very special ration.
what is this photo-translations-app called ?
Is that an app or what that you use to translate that note?
Google translate.
What ? I’ve never seen the mains open that easy haha. The entire squad used spill half of it during exercises
I have opened a few of these over the years lol
Of course a really good review would in a trench with bullets flying around that would be an honest review
watching this makes me realize how good Steve's videos are
I got a type 1 today
that ration makes me hungry...
The chocolate is fucking awesome
Libensruam woulda worked with these. Just missin the smokes
Is that food cold ( pasta and burger)?
German soldiers have a large/deep mess tin and esbit heater. Those are used to heat the meals in water. Then use the water to make coffee . They CAN be eaten cold and taste resonably well. Warm is better
Hey bro what is the name of that software that you translated through your mobile plz tell me
Google translate.
Jasmin Munchgsettner: "This isn't coffee, it's brown water". referring to American coffee" (in the movie Bagdad Cafe).
What do you do with a food you don't eat straight away
Keep in the package or your cargo pockets. The cookies and chocolate are sturdy and heat resistant
Does anyone know what translation app he is using
That phone app is awesome, SteveMRE needs to get that!
let's get this out onto a tray lol

with this ration you can make some Pizza, if you add some water to cracked hartkeks, you can then use the tomato sauce from the hamburgers as sauce and the hamburgers ripped into pieces as topping
it's actually quite a change if you're out in a camp and have a fire and the time
And the chocolate for cheese on top.
@@NormanTheDormantDoormat nah, you can actualyl use the spread that comes with the package for it and if you're realyl really bored, you can melt the chocolate onto the dark bread

grind up that sesame bar, add honey and almonds, and you have Halavah.
Interesting ration. Somehow that was also weird where some biscuits were given warnings because the health department sent from them.🤔🤷
Yeah dude we already got Steve1989. Thanks anyway.
Get one of those cheap match books where the matches are the flat ones on flexible cardboard, and *then* tell me that's a bad way to light matches.
That was a massive ration, strip that one out and you could stretch it out for a while. Nice work
I bet you could get 3 days out of it. Coffee is a good hunger suppressor
It is no mre, its a daily ration 😁
If younuse it as normal food it is a two day supply. Each of the hot mealsmis sold as a main for one person commercial. During military exercises in the 1980s - one EPA per day would be issued since you burn a lot more energy
I was with German AF in the late 1970‘s. Our MRE‘s were just like this / very similar. They were very good. BTW they are intended for a whole day (24 hours). All the main dishes were very good, definitely regular civilian grade (I only disliked one with fish due to personal taste - I do not like fish at all.)
Um wait what ??? What app you using to translate
Has anybody figured out why the US military MRE's are so sucky in comparison to the European and Russian military MREs?
US MRE has a 5 year shelf life requirement. Other countries is usually 3 years. The food has to be different (typically in ways that make it less good) to last 5 years.
Different logistic chains. The classic EPA like this where designed when the german army was training where it would die in case of WW3. So they could go with heavy/bulky food. And most troops (except paratroops) would operate with/close to their vehicles. Throwing a fee EPA on the 2to Unimog never was a problem.
from crazyrussian to steve to you
Looking good to eat
Commercial food with no preservatives. They use fat, sugar and packaging process to keep them shelf stable. You can buy most stuff on the EPA in normal german grocery stores. The canned bread and biscuits are hard to find.
U cant just disrespect my sesame bars like that my guy! :(
Nathen is not Steve that's for sure. I watched that guy eat stuff that would make a Billy goat puke and yet don't think I ever herd him say "that don't sound to appetizing". Now I have herd him say after trying something, " that's an explosion of flavor with rancid undertones" ....takes another bite....... "yes, past it's prime but still good...."
Yeah. He said that after opening and eating the 150+ year old British army can of bully beef...😉
You light the matches the other way when they are cheap paper and not little sticks because if you try to light them like a stick they will bend and fold on you
How to ask questions
Save and use some of the sauce from the burgers and soak the jerky in that
