Hi, first time I saw something from your channel. You seem to be a very nice person and I liked that you spoke a little prayer even before having an EPA ration. That's somewhat charming. The EPA (= Einmannpackung in German, literally: One man package) changed A LOT over the past 30 years. Now, there are variations for religious needs like kosher and halal, vegetarian and vegan (Even that! 20 years ago, any soldier of the Bundeswehr would have laughed about it!). Your package was one of the average ones. There are special ones for officers with chicken breast and such, and other varieties are much better. Currently (2024), the Bundeswehr has 8 different sets. I know and had them all. The Tortellini with turkey, the Beef "Stroganoff," or the vegetarian Risotto Italian-style with vegetables is almost like eating in a restaurant, no kidding. Were you sure that the date given was the "best before" date? EPAs have a guaranteed shelf life of 10 years, and are eatable within 30 years. That has been tested many times by volunteers at the Bundeswehr medical center. No one died and just 2 out of 100 got diarrhea. The rest said it didn't taste that good but wasn't even far from being ugly but bland. That you don't like our nice canned whole-grain bread slices is really sad: Seriously, you can't compare it with fresh bread from the artesian bakery because it has to be eatable for at least 10 years after its production. It's not delicious but okay. The banana chips were supposed to be crunched and mixed with the chocolate mousse, btw. But it's up to you, how like it. It's your ration, in the end. There is tea extract that we get from Poland that is much stronger. With a bit of luck, it's in your ration. Each soldier here has a multi tool with fork, knife, spoon and so on, and it's usually carried at your combat suite. That's why is no silver ware/cutlery in the box. The zip bag, btw, is supposed to transport water. Each part of the package serves a purpose. Fun fact: Did you know that crystal meth was patented in 1937 by the Wehrmacht and they mixed with the chocolate bars? Just google "Pervitin" (Produced until 2015!) and "Panzerschokolade". Chocolate bars mixed with CM were part of combat rations of Bundeswehr until 1970. Then it was declared a controlled drug, both in Germany and the US in that same year. Beef jerky is produced and eaten for over 4,000 years here, so you shouldn't be surprised to find it in a German ration. All the best and greetings!

Wow, thanks for the huge comment! I always love hearing about the culture and ration from people familiar with it! As for your question, I'm not sure if I got the expiration date correct or not, it's been a while since the review so I can't remember for sure, but it's possible it was the manufacture date or something like that. I can read precious little German, so I had to rely on google translate, which can get stuff wrong. Also, I did know about Panzerschokolade, and I think pretty much all nations used pervitin to some extent. However I had no idea it was issued all the way until the 70s! Pretty shocking! Thanks again for the comment! All the best to you as well and Grüß Gott!

@@InternationalRations You're welcome. You made a lovely video and put some effort into it, therefore, you deserved a detailed comment. As I wrote, the minimum shelf life is 10 years. You should try one of the current EPAs. Maybe with the mentioned Polish tea extract which is really good. There is usually some lemon powder, too, which can be mixed with the tea. Very refreshing. Also, the readymix for orange mousse is awesome: Everyone loves it. Oh, and the pepper spread from this video was supposedly some kind of Philadelphia cream cheese with hearty pepper flavor as a spread to be put onto that canned sliced bread.

The high proportion of cocoa in chocolate is so high for certain reasons. It suppresses the desire for something sweet and especially dark chocolate, which has a high proportion of cocoa, can improve diarrhea.

There's value in opening every component when making a review. As a Central/Eastern European, I was pretty curious to see the MRE spin on rye bread.
Otherwise, nice review, one of the better ones I've found.

The reason why you couldn't taste any kidney (or any other offal) in the paté, was because it wasn't a paté at all. It was beef-and-ham sausage, with 66 % Rindfleisch (beef). Therefore, you described it correctly when you called it a sausage.
The gelatinized parts on the side are in there by default - it is the meat broth that emits during the cooking process, and it gelatinizes by itself. In Germany, many people love this stuff, we even have whole sausages made of it, speckled with ham, or chicken pieces and pickles. It is called "Sülze" or "Sulz".
The word Roggenschrotbrot was almost correct the way you said it, it's just that you'd pronounce all the O's similar to the O in "Bro", or "though"
The word "Fleisch" sounds like if you'd add a "SH" to the word "fly".
And the word "Rind" (Cattle) is pretty easy, too. It is said as if you'd say "Ring", just with a sharp "D" in the end, instead of the "G".
I hope this helped a bit with the German...I know, it is a strange way to do so, but always explain pronounciations like that, because for me, it is easier to grab it that way.
Edit: Geflügeljagdwurst does not contain tuna. I am watching this on a smartphone, so I couldn't read the ingredients list, but tuna is surely non of them.
Jagdwurst is indeed a "hunter's sausage", and is mostly made out of pork, beef, or, in this case, poultry. It stands for a sausage with rather finely ground sausage meat, speckled with pieces of ham, or chicken. It is typically spiced with ginger, mace, pepper and coriander. Regionally, mustard seeds or pistachio pieces are added.
The term "Bockwurst" is coming from the "Bockbier" it was traditionally created to accompany. (Bockbier is a very strong, bitter sweet beer with lots of roasted malt in it.)
Bockwurst is made of a mix of veal and beef. We also call it a "Knackwurst" , which roughly translates to "crack sausage", because they do make a very significant sound if you bite into it. (Given you got a whole one - not a "Currywurst"!)

Nicely done friend. I only ever lucked into one of these, and it was awesome!! I never liked rye bread, until I ate the German ration. I love it now. The components, snacks, mains, and all meals looked awesome. Very few casualties in this ration. I am glad you had A good time, and enjoyed most. Peace, John.

@@InternationalRations Ich war 1985 bei der Deutschen Luftwaffe und die Rationen mussten 2 Tage im Feld reichen. Die Rationen wurden aber auch gerne getauscht ,mit amerikanischen Rationen.

Very Interesting! Thanks for commenting! I would assume the reason they were marketed for 24 hours and they were to be used in the Luftwaffe for 48 hours is that you would have to stretch your resources if you were shot down. But in the Bundeswehr they were used for 24 hours, just a guess on my part. Either way, very interesting! Thanks a lot for commenting!
Von Google übersetzt, hoffentlich ist es richtig.
Sehr interessant!

According to my limited research they are meant to last for at least a day. Since they contain "only" 3800 calories, its unlikely that they are meant to be streched much further. The advised average calorie intake for active soldiers is 3600 calories.
