It personally feels pretty darn good to have Scotty agree on a decision I made years ago. I wanted a tacoma very much until I did my due diligence and researched. What I found was…year for year, mile for mile, a used frontier averaged $10k LESS than most Tacoma’s. In comparison, they both got 4.0l v6 about same hp and tq #’s. Both about same mpg’s. Both crew cab. Both 4x4….BUT frontier has a fully boxed frame instead of C-channel (bad track record for Toyota) AND…$10k less. I purchased a 6 year old truck with 65k miles for $17k. Yep we've got the 09 Pathfinder (same frame and engine/trans) and it has 215k. Got it with 72k. Just changed shocks/struts from OEM at 210k! Lots of well made OEM parts.
I’m loving my Nissan. It’s a 1996 hardbody with a 2.4 4 cylinder. I bought it with 13,000 miles and it now has 425,000 miles. I still commute 74 miles round trip every day with it.

And there’s a ton of them around here, it’s just that some people take better care of their frontier’s better than others lol.
Met a guy with Nissan frontier that was 7 years old and had 700,000 miles. Supposedly got 1,000,000 each on last 2. They gave him killer trade-in value and sent both back to engineering department.
Yes Scotty, I bought a 2017 Nissan Frontier V6, used, 2 years ago after listening to Scotty. I love it. The same money would have been a 4-cylinder 2014 Toyota. Glad I buy the Frontier!!! Thank you for the information. Love the videos.
Just bought a 15' frontier with the manual and the 4 banger. Underpowered, but really grounded to drive and easy to work on. Hauls my motorcycle and dirt bikes fine and has enough torque to get me through the mud, would recommend.
Glad to see Scotty justify my purchase, got a 2012 Frontier with the sport package a year a 1/2 ago. My first pickup truck and it's been great even at 178,000 miles runs like a champ
I have 2000 nissan frontier RWD 4 cylinder and it has 380k miles still running no problem I'm the original owner I don't think I would ever get rid of it
I bought a 1993 Nissan pickup new off the lot right out of college and drove it for 15 years. Never had a single problem. It still is the only vehicle I regret getting rid of.
You are right Scotty. I had a Honda Jazz bought new. Gearbox problem when just out of warranty. Called the dealer, they were not interested. Called Honda UK. They were very very concerned that the gearbox had failed on one of their vehicles with low miles on a regularly main dealer serviced car. Honda UK called me back the same afternoon. They told me everything had been taken care of, informed me to take it to the dealer who would replace the gearbox at no cost to me, and provide a courtesy car. Was very impressed with Honda UK in the way they dealt with this.
I have the same truck but with the 4cyl engine and automatic transmission so far 282k shifts and runs smooth. So much easier to work on than the v6 version.
The only truck I've ever owned was a 1995 hard-body 2WD, extended cab, manual trans, really nice truck. Bought it used, one owner, drove it for 3 years with virtually zero issues until me and the wife got T-boned just 9 months after it was paid for. Yeah I know, my sob story lol. My only real complaint was for a 4 cylinder the gas mileage was horrible. 20 on the interstate at best. I honestly like the styling of the Frontier over the Tacoma, just a personal preference.
I bought a brand new 2019 Frontier Pro-4X after doing a ton of research. I was able to get the top trim level with all the bells and whistles for what I would have paid for a low-mid level trim Tacoma. It’s been a great vehicle and I plan on keeping it for many, many years.
I have a 2008 Pathfinder with the 4.0L and it has a 130,000 miles. The engine is very strong and the transmission is very smooth. It has extremely good acceleration. The gas mileage is not too great. Very reliable.
Was hot on buying a Tacoma. Spent months online looking for deals while saving money. I wouldn't give the Frontier a second look. I just had a bad impression based on rumors I heard a few years ago. Finally I decided to investigate and research the Frontier. I know many will wish death on me for saying this but the Frontier is a much better truck for the buck. Just as reliable quality, stronger box frame, faster and more powerful V6, wider bed space, more comfortable ride with better handling and the Tacoma had several recall issues over the years. In fact more than any other mid size pickup
There's something about a 4 l V6 that just makes sense Toyota has won Nissan has won apparently I didn't know this Jeep had one There's some kind of magic that happens with 4 l V6 that's made right that just lasts a long time
My girlfriend had this exact truck for years, many while living in San Francisco which boggles my mind (tight roads, steep hills). She didn’t take the best care of it so it crapped out on her but she really enjoyed driving it. The 4.0L V6 just felt great.
I own a 2018 Frontier with the 4.0L V6, 4x4. It’s a solid truck, built for the mountains, ultra reliable. Something Scotty forgot to mention is that these things don’t turn as well as other trucks do. The radius to make a turn is wider than a Tacoma, F150, or RAM 1500. Just keep that in mind before you buy. Take it for a drive and make sure you can live with the handling. I don’t mind since I’ve driven fat trucks, but it might bother some folks. Other than that, it doesn’t have the best gas mileage, but that’s pretty much it. Everything else is solid and I love my Frontier!
it is decent truck, handles, well, does 4x4 well in snow, mud. combined about 19mpg topping with soft cover on pickup, i push real hard with truck, still love it, only small issues electrical when water got in, ( leaky defective seal on windshield) warranty work, and no problem since, drive strong, drove long way to disney in florida and back to NY and also visited my mother in NC too already got up to 62k on my 2018 crew cab sv. i believe still strong runner.
For some reason Scotty... i have basically become obsessed with your videos. This tip you gave about writing to the manufacturer is one of the more brilliant things i've heard (as a semi-lazy american consumer). The extreme difference between cultural norms and face-saving is truly extreme. Americans are happy to humiliate themselves to serve some momentary "purpose" (like making an extra buck $) but the eastern-types take brand-building and guarantees so much more seriously. I think it is so wise; the fact that we can both see it - the fact that i understand you even though i have no understanding of mechanics. Communication is truly amazing and i thank you for making these videos.
love your reviews. I live in Las Vegas Nv. and own a '19 Nissan Frontier V6 SV. I've driven up to the Sierras in Cal. and mountains in Utah and it performs great. I think I'll keep it for a long time.
I'm the original owner of an 87 Nissan pickup yes it still runs I have never change the rotors on it and never had the front end aligned it still goes nice and straight down the road
I have one, did the same things to it and all the feelings are mutual. Didn't know that the trans was known for being good, I thought they were bad. Good to hear! Definitely get the V6 everyone if you get this truck.
Bought a Nissan frontier extended cab truck stick shift new in 5-1998 for $14,000 dollars. Sold it one year ago for $450 dollars with 286,000 miles. Still ran great but dash died and was getting very ragged out on the inside. Nothing but routine maintenance. 23 years of reliable transportation. Loved that truck. Paint still looked very good.
Watch out for the Frontier, Pathfinder, Xterra prior to 2010. Radiator defect which can cause antifreeze to mix into the Transmission. Otherwise, that 4.0 is beastly.
There is a quick bypass mod that works like a champ. To do it right you can install a separate transmission cooler. Both are cheap easy fixes. Don't sleep on these V6s.
If you're looking into a 2005-2008 be aware of the radiator problem these had. There is a weak point between where the coolant and transmission fluids flow that can break causing catastrophic transmission failure. Take it from me, I've been through it.
I have a 2007 and I prevented that from happening by doing a simple 5-$10 preventative fix and research. Besides theres a dude on youtube that had your problem and fixed his 07 xterra after the strawberry shake of death happened to him just by replacing the radiator and flushing the transmission and trans filter. Looked like work but he saved thousands doing it.
I have a 2017 Frontier Desert runner and its a good truck. Change oil every 5k and i did a transmission flush at 70k miles. Awesome truck for the price
@@NVRAMboi yeah i got mine at 67k for a 2017 which the mileage is kinda eh for that year. When i got it it was clean for the most part, couple scratches and stuff, but it's driven smooth since. Good luck with the manual transmission, mines an automatic sadly :/
Bought my 2019 Frontier brand new for $28K out the door. Taxes, tags everything. Well my situation changed and I sold it back to the dealer for $27,600 with 22K miles on it. Never a minutes trouble with it. I'm happy with both deals.
My 2017 base model w a 4cylinder and auto transmission can’t get out of its own way. The turning radius is just dangerous. But I’ve driven it 90 k so far with zero issues. Still has the original brakes and tires.
I know someone with a 2008 that has 125,000 miles and it runs like a charm. Transmission, differentials and transfer case oil change once a year. Engine oil change every 5,000 miles with synthetic. This way the fluids are like a new vehicle.
Funny, this is exactly the same conclusion I came to. Got a 2017 froniter SV King cab 6ft v6 4x4 loaded with all the features available on the trim for 27 grand. 37000 miles. For a tacoma access cab of the same year with same level of features and 40,000 miles the dealer wanted 38 grand after the bogus markup. Frontier has taken me through a mudhole on bald tires and did not get stuck. Personally the 5 speed in the frontier feels more responsive to me than the tacoma. And my legs don't sit up as high.
My Frontier is a 2013 v6. 187k miles. Normal preventative maint. Drives like it is still new. The only issue is replace the heater core outlet and inlet. They put plastic in them and they will FAIL. The dorman makes a metal one much better and its about 20 ish dollars per.
My 08 Pathfinder, which is essentially an SUV Frontier, is still going strong after 14 years! The only problem I had was a cracked radiator which I caught before it tore up the transmission.
@@fbi1490 Essentially the radiator was built out of cheap plastics. Over time the plastic can crack and allow coolant to flow out of the radiator and into the transmission cooler. The coolant would then mix with the transmission oil, and if not caught quick enough, can destroy your tranny. I was out driving one day when it started shifting very rough. Went home drained the transmission oil, refilled it, and replaced the radiator. Ran good ever since. Recently I’ve noticed a vibration at idle which I think is either the engine motor mounts or the timing chain, either way, I’ve got my money worths out of this car.
I love my Nissan, 2012 Nissan Frontier Pro 4x, durable tough little truck. Really good off road, and it’ll scamp to be a V6. 162k on the clock and never been in the shop knock on wood. I love her
In Australia it’s called a Nissan Navara. Only thing that can be a problem is timing chain but some of these utes have over 300k kilometres with the diesel turbo engine. Can’t expect all cars to be bullet proof.. some times you get lucky or unlucky..
I got my 2005 NISMO for 12k about 5 years ago had 129k miles, NISMO was they changed the name to Pro 4X. Done me good so far I’m at 162K now. I’ve rescued more than one Tacoma off the Mountain. One was brand new TRD 2k miles and the transmission broke while they were 4 x 4ing. Felt bad for the kid. So far Had to replace my alternator and the cam position sensor
Bought a 2019 Nissan Frontier Pro4x with 169,000 km on it 8 months ago. Very satisfied with this purchase and I made it largely in part to this video. Thanks scotty
I have a 2011 Pathfinder with 139k miles. I'm the second owner at 68k miles. Its been a great vehicle. The only major repair (besides calipers, rotors, ect) i've ever done is the AC compressor at 86k. It is my wifes daily driver.
I have a 2006 LE frontier I love this truck we owned it since 2010 I drive it everyday it drives amazing i always tell people that these trucks are bullet proof and if they can find one in good shape I recommend u buy it
The '22 Frontier is an attractive truck to me, if I were in the market. Good to see Nissan still making them with the V6, boxed frame, standard (good) automatic trans gear selector. Nice looking truck too. I'll be interested if you get your hands on one, what you think.
Nissan always waits to implement the newest trendy tech (like digital gear selectors) and that's actually why I like them. Tried-and-true designs are preferable. That's why I picked up a first-gen frontier 4x4. The decision was almost entirely because its the last truck I know of with a manual transfer case. Manual transmission plus manual transfer case (two sticks) is how trucks were meant to be.
My wife has a 2006 Xterra - 178k on the meter. Still goes like a champ. Just traded in my '98 Frontier for a 2012 SV 4x4 Frontier. Now we have two VQ40's in the family...
I put 300k on my 2007. I replaced the engine with a used low milage engine. Same original transmission still shifts fine. Cheaper than buying a new or used truck. Mine has been garaged since new. Looks like new also.
Drive a 2008 LE V8 4 x 4. Just to verify that the V8 is the 5.6 in both the Armada and Titan. Have a CIA and Bully Dog tuner and produce about 330 hp, 405 tq. Same transmission, but different clutch packs. Beefed up drivetrain of course. Installed inner coil airbags in the rear for about $100 and provides further diving stability. Performed routine and proactive maintenance and after 3 years of ownership and 155k on the clock, it's been extremely reliable.
I’m still driving my 08 Titan Le with 260,000 miles on er I’ve had this since 2010... had to fix the rear axle seals leak just recently other then a few other minor things it’s been a solid running truck.
My 06 Nismo is driven hard on mostly off-roads. Had two front broken springs for two years and it just keeps driving through the rocky roads. I'm still happy with it. 😎
I bought my 2015 Frontier in 2021 for $16,999 with 32,000 miles while the tacomas and other trucks with the same mileage and year were going around $30k or even more.
Paint is excellent for me anyways. Paint is not coming off or rust showing. There were few scratches but overall it wasn't that concerning for me. I'm not picky in that part. @CookieMonster_
I have a 2000 nissan pickup single cab. It doesn't get driven a lot, but it gets abused a lot when it hits the road. And we ran that little 4 cil engine on L.P. Gas for 20 years with no issues at all.
Those Frontiers are good trucks. I almost bought one in 2011 but opted for a Ram 1500 because it was all black and friggin awesome looking. It's still going, but I think I would be more likely to get another ten years out of that Frontier.
Hi from Chile dear Scotty, I have a Nissan Frontier D22 2.4i, year 2008 4x4, crewcab 338.745km the engine is complete dry, no oil and still a great machine
Mine's a gas pig too, but I love it. Coming from a PreRunner 2.7L 4cyl with an automatic tranny, the extra cost for fuel is well worth it. I hit the accelerator on my Nissan and it gooooooes.
I just sold a 2016 loaded 4x4 SL V6 with 37643 miles Frontier. Let me say this it was a gas hog. Hey Scotty I’m 73 years old and don’t have a heavy foot. I now have 2012 Chevy Avalanche and the mileage is way better. I have heard the new 2021 with the higher Hp motor is even worse on gas.
That’s because the frontier has an extremely old engine, and not built in any way shape or form for economy. All Nissan v6 engines are like this. My moms qx60 has a 3.5 v6 from the pathfinder which is the same/similar engine found in the Nissan Frontier, 350z, Altima, maxima, rogue, and their Infiniti counterparts
In town you may just get 16mpg.. but say somewhere flat like NC you will get 22mpg... you cant expect much more to drive a box down the road even if it has a briggs and stratton in it. Just the way it is.
I prefer the vk56 v8 , there are lots of trashed transmissions in vk56s , but the single radiator/ intercooler are the scource issue on vk56 designs . The transmission fluid and radiator fluid occasionally mingle and its not a good relationship . That's why knowledgeable vk owners change the rad out with two separated ones. Another fun one is the blinking airbag light , simple fix . Change out the clock spring in steering column yourself , do not take it to stealerships. Last one is the rare but super annoying no start , leads to a bumper sensor going bad. All three are cheap fixes if you know what you are in for , hit it . The v8s are some really very well built 4wds. They come from the nissan Patrol, made globally for over 50 years for safari/ outback overlanding. Don't buy the cummins version, it's an exceptionally expensive headache.
Within 1 year of buying my used 2015 pro 4x i swapped headers radiator and did rear vent mod. Owned this truck 4 years now and i beat the hell out of it everyday. Have 50 shot hooked up and everything!!
I had a frontier just like this one, I sold it to a buddy at work, he bugged me all the time to sell it to him, he like it, so I did, I didn’t wanted to because It ran great, almost no problem, after a week I sold it, he calls me THAT IT GOT STOLEN, He was in Cali he left the keys in the truck, he found the truck a day later, but man I miss my truck
One of my Nissan Titan hit 300,000km today with original engine and transmission. The only thing stop working was fuel pump which I got changed at 295,000km Great trucks
Have a 2016 SV Frontier 4x4 V6. Truck has been very reliable with 150,000 miles. Change the oil every 3000 miles. Regular wear and tear items (brakes, replaced front wheel bearing). Only issue I’ve had is the pinion gasket seal needs to be replaced in my differential. I tow a 4000 pound (when empty) single axle camper (plus three other people and camping gear/food) with relative ease. Highly recommend this truck.
I absolutely love your brutal honesty. I can't buy a local Toyota from the dealership because I don't trust them after seeing how they treated our company Tacoma trucks when we had to bring them in for work. If Tacoma would order me what I want I can always bring my truck into a Nissan dealership for work.
Wasn't there a guy that had 1,000,000 miles on his Frontier? Original engine, didn't change the the clutch until 700,000 and timing chain at 400,000. Nissan gave him a free new Frontier for that.
Yup, it was a 4cyl 5spd in th Chicago area, pretty amazing. Th Nissan Hardbody they made in th 80s was probably as good or better than anything Toyota has ever made
Yup I saw him on some car reviews…he is from Chicago very interesting story that truck is manual transmission…his truck now is on display every time Nissan has a special event

Hauls my motorcycle and dirt bikes fine and has enough torque to get me through the mud, would recommend.
they made these in manuak? lol
@@Daniel-pc2ov 2nd most recent gen, yes
great truck nice and simple
4 banger with a manual and that sucker will run forever.
4 cylinder, Right ?

For how much?
In late 2019 I bought a Nissan Frontier for $20,000 and sold it for $30,000 in late 2021. I don't think used Nissan's are cheap at the moment.
I have a 2014 frontier with 117,000 miles and I’ve had zero issues with it yet My favorite truck.
I have the same truck, 51,000 miles, love it
in late 2019 the Nissan Frontiers were $10,000 off MSRP.
@@jamesm568 I got mine with taxes, fees, etc. extended warranty out the door total price was about $6k under sticker
@@TennesseeMatt I can't say that happened with my 2022 Nissan Frontier though.
I have a 2008 Pathfinder with the 4.0L and it has a 130,000 miles. The engine is very strong and the transmission is very smooth. It has extremely good acceleration. The gas mileage is not too great. Very reliable.
That's why I got the 5.6 in the Pathfinder. If mileage is gonna suck anyway it might as well be a beast. Lol
Had two great trucks! Over 200k on both and still got great trade in. On 2nd Titan and still happy with product zero issues 👍
I have a UK spec 2.5 turbo diesel. 190 bhp, 12 years and 100k+ miles. Still pulls like a train. Everything original and everything still works.
In fact more than any other mid size pickup
can buy 2 decent v6 frontiers for the price of one tacoma. Says enough, and having 2 cars is way better than running one to the ground.
I bought a used 2019 Nissan Frontier SL (nicer model) 4*4 with 12500 miles in 2020 for $25,500. Best purchase Ive ever made! Just paid it off as well!
i had an 07 Frontier for about five years, and it was a great truck. had the 4.0L V6 and 6spd manual
@@MyFriendGoo666 That's a Torchy Motor and maybe the gearing was right

How's it hanging up now? I just picked up a 24 pro 4x.
Lots of guys are not too sure about the 3.8 yet it seems.
@@texttwenty-nine1627 I have a situation and I sell it. But the time I had it, it was an excellent pickup. Still better than a new Tacoma.
This was back when Nissan actually took their manufacturing seriously, the D21 Hardbody is a solid truck
Hardbody!
I have a 2012 too Crew cab with the same V6 engine. Highly recommend it
I have a 2004 Frontier 4 cylinder with an manual transmission. It has about 276,000 miles and it is still running well.
2003 here with 206k!
Automatic transmission issue only, 6 speed manual rulz!! because I own one!
There is a quick bypass mod that works like a champ. To do it right you can install a separate transmission cooler. Both are cheap easy fixes. Don't sleep on these V6s.
Ahh.. the Strawberry Milkshake of Death issue. The radiator construction got better and the issues went away - I'm thinking around 2008 or so.
If you get one, just replace the radiator immediately with an aftermarket one. Solves the problem.
@@djflashlinx5150 KABOOM!

Why would a cracked radiator damage the transmission?

I have the same truck but with a 2.5 engine. 283k with just basic maintenance. I own a Tacoma as well but I enjoy the frontier more.
