10 String Fretless Sub Contra Bass - In Tune!

- A new video after adjusting the intonation. Fretless multi course instruments are a challenge to play given its almost impossible to place the pad of your finger at the same position on two strings at once. After adjusting the intonation on the octave strings to be slightly sharp, things are much better. Bass is plugged into a Mesa Subway DI, mixed with the backing track with a Boss RC-50, then straight into an iPhone.
I think I have commented on most of your videos, and I don’t do that often, but the craftsmanship here is just astounding. I want one so bad.
Thank you so much for the kind words. bookabassguitars@gmail.com if you ever want to turn that dream to reality
this groove is so insanely funky and rhythmic whilst also being so simple and that tone is just MASSIVE
Thanks for the kind words, James!
That beast sounds rad. I'd love to see Tony Levin put that thing through its paces.
I really should have recorded a sledgehammer cover before it went to its new owner!
What a radically beautiful looking instrument - sounds beautiful as well 👍
What a majestic looking instrument.
gorgeous instrument and playing
I swear, if the essence of 70's could be described by the sound of 1 instrument.
That tone is PHAT
I'm surprised that bass didn't go up in flames b/c that bassline was absolute fire 😂♥🤘🏻
Absolutely wild build! How the fingerboard goes into the body completely seemlessly?? That’s so beautiful.
What a huge difference this makes! It sounds even better!
That bass is a work of art! I've always wanted a fretless like this where the fretboard has no end. Usually you only see basses like this with piezo bridge pickups only, but you loose so much tone and soul when there's no magnetic pickups. I really like that you placed the pickups beneath the top instead!
Btw; Guyker tuners rule! By far the best budget tuners I've ever tried. They are super high quality, but less than half the price of premium tuners.
Thanks for the kind words.
P.S. Don't let the secret out about Guyker tuners, or they'll triple in price!
What is the scale length for that thing considering how low you're able to tune?
37" on this one, but I usually do a 39" scale when tuning f#
@@BookabassWhy 39 inches instead of 37?
@@steffomca762longer is better for low end clarity, and I have found 39” to be as long as I can go without sacrificing playability.
@@Bookabasswhy then did you choose 37" and not 39"? Was it to get better playabillity?
@@mickeyrube6623playability and balance. 10 tuners weigh a lot and the further from the strap they are, the greater the chance of neck dive. A ten string fretless was going to be hard to play, so I wanted to shorten the scale length. I also wanted a good low F#. so 37” was a compromise
Wow, I feel like one bass string at a time is already hard enough, I'm impressed.bThe tone sounds great!
I found with a good setup, I didn’t really need any more strength in my left hand. I think the difference on a fretted instrument would be less still.
Thanks for the kind words 😀
Que lindo !!!!!! tenes mas videos con fretless ?
Que grave, meu amigo! 😮
Beautiful instrument. Cool playing.
That sounds badass. I love it!
Nice repetition 1:10 . . Interesting instrument but doesn’t Australia have a bass player who’s comfortable on a fretless?
I’m fairly comfortable on a fretless (I have at least three other videos of me playing fretless), but these dual course fretless basses require a technique that I wasn’t able to nail before it got sent to its new owner. Intonating two different gauge strings with something as imprecise as the pad of your finger is significantly harder than you would think.
Holy cow, this is so cool. Great demo work as well.
Still sounds just as cool!
Sounds very nice. Lovely bass
I'd say the recording is ment to be that volume to show the mix of it
Awesome, sounds much better!
Damn. I want to play that thing.
Awesome. Do you have a store page. Google in Canada is mot being very helpful in finding you.
Hi there. Basses I have for sale are on Reverb.com

Great Sound
Amazing!
Would love an 8 string version of this.
Stay tuned - I have all the parts here ready to start building one 😁
The first thing I’d play on this instrument is Paul Young’s “I’m Gonna Tear Your Playhouse Down” - and another Pino line - Pete Townsend’s “Give Blood”
Nice. Tuned F# B E A D with octave strings, I guess?
Yep, that’s it.
That is a beast
How much would one cost?
Prices for my basses start at $2000 USD. Email bookabassguitars@gmail.com for more information
Just in opportunity, how much could it cost?)))
Pricing starts at $2500 USD. bookabassguitars@gmail.com for more information
How do you like the guyker tuners?
They’re one of the best kept secrets. Very hard to fault them and the price is very attractive.
@@Bookabass damn.. I just ordered the kaynes a few days ago..
@@Bookabass
The kaynes tuners were dogsh*t.. gonna return em and get the Guyker
Шикарно!!!
Ps . Can I have one .. even if it's a throw away. Be amazing
Sounds killer
NBA jam vibes!
Bravo!
Super cool!
The playing is great, the sound is great, and it's beautiful to look at.
Thank you so much for the kind words
Does it play if you move past second position? 😂
It’s actually a huge challenge going up the neck. Paired strings of different gauges are very difficult to “fret” at the same point with the round, soft tip of a finger. This makes getting two strings intonated well very difficult. Definitely orders of magnitude harder than an unpaired fretless!
@@Bookabass Well damn, sarcasm met kindly, with information. Thank you, my low end brother 🙏✌️
Hows changing strings on it?
Twice as long.
Can you play some gap band. Reminds me burn some rubber.
I wish the backing track on this (and all other videos) was less loud so we could hear the bass better. It is what we all come for after all.
Well balanced here. I'm thru JBL Flip 5 trio in party mode flat from 50 hz thru hearing. What are listening w ? No , or reduced fundamental possibly, but it sounds great.
@@terryenglish7132 I listen to most videos casually on my laptop or phone. Maybe I should listen to those videos with proper headphones like I do when I listen to music.
The bass is the loudest thing in the mix
Simp.
Haha bro you are such a funny dude. Listening to bass on tiny tweeters and complaining you cant hear the bass. Hahahahahaha
Gosh, what's this tool of sorcery????????
Sick
so crunchy omg
Nice!
Thanks!
It ain't the heat. It's the cupidity. By which I mean, I want one.
i love
Damn!
I need a 5/ octave bass :D
probably sounds brutal distorted, it already growls as is
Love this Bass
I wanna hear tapewounds on it
I really wanted to put tapes on this, but it was impossible to find some for the XL scale. I even contacted Labella to see about custom strings, but the answer was no
Sounds like Beringer Ultra Bass.
sounds pleasantly evil.
That is perhaps the best compliment one of my instruments has received!
It looks a lot like a Bajo Quinto.
That would confuse the heck out of an octave-divider pedal.
I did try it before I sold it. With a Boss MO2, it tracked well and was a wall of sound!
Lol that’s what the video sounded like to me! 🎸😀
Sounds like a Minimoog
Where’s the pickup-
Mounted from behind, sitting about 3mm under the fretboard. The piece of wood with my logo on it on the back is the access cavity.
@@Bookabass That has to be the strangest place I’ve ever seen a pickup, good for you.
@@Aquarian-t8p it doesn’t effect the sound, but it lets the top look really clean.
When your tone can't get any fuller than that
I knew Alumitones were low impedance, but I didn't know they were invisible
Low impedance, lower visibility (especially when you rear mount them and put them under the fretboard 😜)
Fretless and pickupless?
It's hidden inside body just behind the strings
i think it has piezos
@@jeffayoe7468 Doesn't really sound like a piezo to me. I think it's a magnetic pickup behind that Booka cover.
@@nikanjyou are correct.
@@nikanj ooh thank you :D
It seems like a waste to have a fretless and not attempt a single slide...
Love the entire body fingerboard. Sounds weird, but all "double string" basses do.
bass players be like
5 course, not 10 string.
I just counted them, and there are indeed 10 strings 😁
@@Bookabass Yes, but strings that are doubled together are called coursed instruments. The mandolin has 8 strings, but its a 4 course instrument. Yes the 12 string guitar is incorrectly labelled that way, buts its actually a 6 course guitar. A true 12 string guitar and a true 10 string bass, don't have paired strings. They have massively wide necks to accommodate the individual strings. The RMI Titan 10 string bass and Woodo B10 are 10 string basses. By calling it a 10 string, it muddies the water. Yes its common practice, but that's exactly why its so hard to get only the results you want. Take the 12 string guitar, imagine how hard it is to find and *actual* 12 string extended range guitar, with 12 individual strings. I can assure you its not easy. All because people incorrectly call a 6 course guitar a 12 string.
@@RainMakeR_Workshop your nomenclature falls on its head when you start talking a 4 course, 12 string bass and a 4 course, 8 string bass. Do you call both of them 4 course basses, or do you call one an 8 string and the other a 12 string?
@Bookabass You instinctively said already. 4 course 12 string and 4 course 8 string. If they don't specify, you assume the more common of the two. Courses are most commonly 2 strings, so if someone says its a 4 course instrument, you would assume a 4 course 8 string, unless they specify otherwise.
"sounds" expensive....😁
Turn off the octaver and let us hear the darn thing.
Ummmm, this bass has octave strings…
Sounds like a big waste of time and effort with all the electronic gizmos on the market enabling the player to create almost any sound structure imaginable.
Where’s the fun in that?
@michaelmcdonald3057 👈🏼 found the gizmo-sician, using autotune and putzing about with GarageBand iOS.
where are the pickups at?
The humbucker is hidden underneath the 5mm wood top
