10 String Fretless Sub Contra Bass - In Tune!

A new video after adjusting the intonation. Fretless multi course instruments are a challenge to play given its almost impossible to place the pad of your finger at the same position on two strings at once. After adjusting the intonation on the octave strings to be slightly sharp, things are much better. Bass is plugged into a Mesa Subway DI, mixed with the backing track with a Boss RC-50, then...

Something different, and not for everyone. My homage to Carl Thompson. A very organic tone on this one. No controls, except for an on/off push button switch. Twin truss rods in a Honduran mahogany neck.

A fretless 4 string with a standard 34” scale. A very unique hairy oak laminate top, with a rose mahogany back. Electronics are Dimarzio Model One and Willpower pickups running into an Audere 3 band preamp. The blend knob blends between the inner coils (MM sweet spot) and the outer coils, with the neck coil low passed, getting Jaco zing with some low end intact. Recording is with eq flat, bass ...

Booka Bass #007 39 Inch Scale Bass Demo

Hand built in Australia using primarily Australian woods. Overwound Musicman style humbucker. Extra long 39" scale, which is quite comfortable to play given the long upper horn and strap button placement (the whole bass sits to the player's right, bringing the headstock into a very normal location) . Drums, keys and bass were recorded simultaneously using microphones at central locations in the...
Ps . Can I have one .. even if it's a throw away. Be amazing
I'd say the recording is ment to be that volume to show the mix of it
What about strings? Who produces long enough strings?
Newtone Strings in the UK, Kalium and Octave4Plus in the US and Pyramid Strings in the EU. Surprisingly quite a few options.
Excellent Job 🎸🔥
What kind of wood is this bass made out of?
The top is New Guinea ebony and epoxy.
gorgeous instrument and playing
I never realized Elder Cunningham played bass!
I believe!
Fingernails.
It sounds as beautiful as it looks 👍
❤❤❤
Georgia O’Keefe would be proud!
I want bass from Booka, but im too poor. Fan of you guys
Forbidden chocolate
That B string is glorious..
Thank you. It’s even better in person 😁
Nice repetition 1:10 . . Interesting instrument but doesn’t Australia have a bass player who’s comfortable on a fretless?
I’m fairly comfortable on a fretless (I have at least three other videos of me playing fretless), but these dual course fretless basses require a technique that I wasn’t able to nail before it got sent to its new owner. Intonating two different gauge strings with something as imprecise as the pad of your finger is significantly harder than you would think.
Is tuned E to E like a regular guitar(except a few octaves lower of course)?
Almost. The low F# is a whole tone higher than an octave below a normal bass, which in turn is an octave below a guitar. It certainly could be tuned like a guitar but two octaves lower.
Nice thing, although I have doubts about the usability in common music. A low B is already hard to use. F# string as for special effect: sure. As for a separate role in a song: could be (like Massive Attack did in a.o. Mezzanine: a hardly hearable melody line in the super low octave).
It’s surprising useful. I disagree that the low B is hard to use (especially when it has the clarity of a 39” scale 😉). I’ve used an F# tuned bass in many genres, including genres where you wouldn’t expect it to work, and it does. The Ab, A and Bb are especially useful when playing swing, big band tunes etc that are in keys written for horns.
@@Bookabass Thanks for this comment. It shines a new light on these low octaves.
Wow you made it by yourself? Sick sound, great bass
It sounds nice, regardless of whether it's like double bass or not.
bro, thats just homemade ibanez sr
Imitation is the greatest form of flattery.
this groove is so insanely funky and rhythmic whilst also being so simple and that tone is just MASSIVE
Thanks for the kind words, James!
The first thing I’d play on this instrument is Paul Young’s “I’m Gonna Tear Your Playhouse Down” - and another Pino line - Pete Townsend’s “Give Blood”
That sounds badass. I love it!
It seems like a waste to have a fretless and not attempt a single slide...
I'd love to see a build where you go for the full double-bass 42" scale length!
Hold my beer, I'm going to the workshop!
I guess the drummer is rockin a 60 inch contra bass drum, too.
Ah, the old 808 bass drum
I wanna hear tapewounds on it
I really wanted to put tapes on this, but it was impossible to find some for the XL scale. I even contacted Labella to see about custom strings, but the answer was no
Maaaaan! You make some amazing sounding instruments - I particularly like the wiring scheme on this one =^)
Love. That surely is some fat tone.
Where can i buy these basses in the usa? I would love to own one they are beautiful and sound amazing
This will be listed in Reverb.com for $2k USD delivered in the near future. This bass is B stock, as it has been played a little bit and has a couple of small scratches. Normally basses start at $2500 USD. Email me at bookabassguitars@gmail.com for more information.
I'm surprised that bass didn't go up in flames b/c that bassline was absolute fire 😂♥🤘🏻
What gauge string are you using for the low f#?
168 gauge on a 39” scale
@@BookabassWow, that must be really tight.
@@SixEightSixty not as tight as you would think. The longer scale gives the perception/feel of less tension
That’s some phat tone mate, well done ! Gloss finish on that body goes really well too 👌
Love how you did the "fret" marker inlays
Does it play if you move past second position? 😂
It’s actually a huge challenge going up the neck. Paired strings of different gauges are very difficult to “fret” at the same point with the round, soft tip of a finger. This makes getting two strings intonated well very difficult. Definitely orders of magnitude harder than an unpaired fretless!
@@Bookabass Well damn, sarcasm met kindly, with information. Thank you, my low end brother 🙏✌️
Amazing!
Geez this sounds absolutely amazing!!!! And it looks sooo cool!! Take my money!
sounds pleasantly evil.
That is perhaps the best compliment one of my instruments has received!
What a majestic looking instrument.
probably sounds brutal distorted, it already growls as is
The Bass looks really good, and it sounds amazing in that low tuning! I also play bass but it's not some expensive or good looking bass, just a Jackson Spectra JS Bass.
That bass looks amazing. Are there any controls for the pick ups?
Thanks for the compliment. At this stage the pickups are wired straight to the output jack, which I quite like from a minimalistic perspective. I have a 4 way rosters switch I will be wiring in that will give series, parallel, neck pickup and off. Basically a pickup selector with an off position.
@@Bookabass I do like the minimalism, looks great.
5 course, not 10 string.
I just counted them, and there are indeed 10 strings 😁
@@Bookabass Yes, but strings that are doubled together are called coursed instruments. The mandolin has 8 strings, but its a 4 course instrument. Yes the 12 string guitar is incorrectly labelled that way, buts its actually a 6 course guitar. A true 12 string guitar and a true 10 string bass, don't have paired strings. They have massively wide necks to accommodate the individual strings. The RMI Titan 10 string bass and Woodo B10 are 10 string basses. By calling it a 10 string, it muddies the water. Yes its common practice, but that's exactly why its so hard to get only the results you want. Take the 12 string guitar, imagine how hard it is to find and *actual* 12 string extended range guitar, with 12 individual strings. I can assure you its not easy. All because people incorrectly call a 6 course guitar a 12 string.
@@RainMakeR_Workshop your nomenclature falls on its head when you start talking a 4 course, 12 string bass and a 4 course, 8 string bass. Do you call both of them 4 course basses, or do you call one an 8 string and the other a 12 string?
@Bookabass You instinctively said already. 4 course 12 string and 4 course 8 string. If they don't specify, you assume the more common of the two. Courses are most commonly 2 strings, so if someone says its a 4 course instrument, you would assume a 4 course 8 string, unless they specify otherwise.
This isn't even raw talent. This is medium rare, and I'd go for a steak right about now.
I like me a medium rare steak too!
I agree. That sure is a tasty sounding bass. Are you using any mod tones with it?
Шикарно!!!
Do you do custom orders by any chance? This bass is stunning!
I absolutely do. Email me at bookabassguitars@gmail.com This instrument is available, although it would be sold as B stock as I have played it a bit
clipping
Yeah, there is a little bit. I’m far from a recording expert. This was just a quick “plug everything in and record a little jam” kinda thing.
get a life. you see this beautiful and artfully hand crafted bass and clipping is what you have to say?
@@matthewmorter7803 ...yeah? i'm listening a little more than i'm looking. i love this guys stuff and it's a shame the levels were messed up, it's smth that someone working w audio should be aware of. itd be better if it was redone with better leveling
@@jakeeeGST sure, it would be better with care taken of levels, and that is basic stuff, very basic, recording 101 stuff really, but that's not the point, this video isn't about recording quality, this is art and craftsmanship! you can do whatever you want, I just thought it was a pretty jerky thing to say. it could have been said with more constructive criticism.
@@matthewmorter7803 you can't make the craftsmanship argument when the video is titled after the tone (so assuming it's the focal point) and then mess up in the one place that's going to cause discomfort during the listen. i sorry a singular word apparently carries some kind of connotation outside of what's apparent and a problem. i have no problem with this dude
Woah! Whats the tuning on that thing?
ADGC, where the low A is a tone below a normal low B.
Yes
Nice. Tuned F# B E A D with octave strings, I guess?
Yep, that’s it.
