    Would be cool to see a setup with a flush (low) mount red dot and the magnifier for use in the down position and stewed in the up position for non AR setups like the top cover of an AK.

    Personally, I think the Wilcox FTS mount is the best solution. Very slick QD system that eliminates levers and allows the magnifier to function as a slick and compact monocular, can achieve high mount height with a riser, and as far as I'm aware, can serve a dual purpose with clip on NVG and thermal use. As well- Crucify me for this if you want- If you're only using the mount for a magnifier, you can just buy the cheapo airsoft knockoff versions for civilian use. Even high quality magnifier mounts don't actually hold zero perfectly, nor do they need to when the RDS is what gives you your zero.

    Eotech + magnifier is my go-to setup on my main rifles. I keep the magnifier in the “active” position when on the sling or in my back, it’s not getting stuck on anything. Now a $260 hinge that adds weight and that is not going completely out of the way is simply some ridiculous hype for me. Depending on what type of shooting I’m doing, the magnifier simply just goes away to save weight. I think that’s the whole original idea of a setup like that.
    As always c_does, thank you for your excellent reviews.

    • @Heywoodthepeckerwood

      The unity with the G45 doesn’t obscure the eotech on a riser at all. Only when you mix up different companies as their ideas of cowitness are different.
      Also The magnifiers are way heavier and much larger than weapon mounted flashlights.

    I considered one of these for one big reason; after a couple hundred rounds suppressed using a flip to side mount(the right side), the front lens of the magnifier is CAKED in carbon making it practically unusable. This would remedy that.

    • @VincitOmniaVeritas7
      @VincitOmniaVeritas7 Год назад

      @@luciusrene943 it can be a pain in the neck to focus two prism scopes (which the magnifiers are) in line. The 1X prism that you want might be easier to adjust.
      I have a 3x prism scope and two 3x magnifiers. I tried to make a 9X just for fun and after a lot of frustration, I managed to do it, but there’s a big problem: as soon as you flip down the magnifier, the front prism scope will be out of focus. I’m convinced that, if you really want a variable magnification prism, the ELCAN is the only real option.
      If you are having problems with eye relief, you should try the primary arms with the mount option that cants backwards. For me, the primary arms MicroPrisms have three advantages over the Vortex/Vector competitors: multiple mounting options, shake awake and finer 1/4 MOA adjustments (magnified options only).
      Good luck on your experiment.

    I was just about to comment about ftc kinda being in the way for passive nv and then you added your clarification announcement, lol. The other thing with ftc is you need to use a very thin rear buis if you want to run buis. I have an eotech with the unity riser so there are no sigts built into the mount like with a t2.

    • @carlh4350
      @carlh4350 Год назад

      Also wanted to say. In my opinion, if u want to go tall, it's so much cheaper to just buy an adm 1/2" full rail riser to mount on the receiver and just use your factory mounts that come with your magnifier and red dot. I bought into the IG coolness, but on my backup night rifle, I went the cheaper route. To me, it wasn't worth spending all that money on the Unity Mounts. But at least I look cooler, lol.

You can watch his video " What are Red Dot Magnifiers Really For? at: ruclips.net/video/luNvOp-seuw/видео.html Time stamp 6:04. He states that it "defeats...to retain full night vision capability".

      Personally, I disagree with half of hop's take.
      You can not look through this magnifier and have nods on, that's true.
      However, it's a pain in the ass to look through a magnifier under nods anyways - the way I see it, you take the magnifier off at night, and when the sun comes up you put it back on so that you can actually use the magnification. Delta 34 did a video analysis on this exact topic, and that was his perspective!

    • @matthewriegner5180
      @matthewriegner5180 Год назад +2

      Yes. They're a personal preference/use case type thing.
      They're cool, but definitely much higher and you'd have to consider if that's worth while.
      I thought about it and bought a fast mount for a red dot, but after shooting it a bit realized I preferred something shorter. I like 1.5" -1.93" height sights better. The flip to center magnifier is cool but it is harder to prone for sure. It really is a setup for passive aiming with nv hence the qd for the magnifier mount.

    • @KeterMalkuth
      @KeterMalkuth Год назад +4

      There's a lot of mixed feelings with regards to >1.93" mounts. The single biggest reason someone would have to use them is if they need to use masks regularly, or if for whatever odd reason they are training for passive aiming through NVGs a lot. The argument has been occasionally made that they're superior for CQB or that the hold overs at range are better. These are valid arguments, with caveats:
      While yes, the more heads up position is objectively more comfortable if you ask me, I don't believe it offers you greater awareness and peripheral vision, as many people try to argue. On the contrary, in CQB, many would argue that the benefits of a lower mount, namely, lower holdovers reducing risk, and greater recoil control due to increased contact surface with the rifle, outweighs the benefits of a high mounted dot.
      At range, it's actually true that if you look at the holdovers for a higher mount, they're superior in terms of point of aim, point of impact. The overall dispersion of your holdovers is more advantageous for the 0-450 yard range. The problem that you run into, of course, is what you mentioned; If you're in the prone, you may find that your poor cheek weld makes this advantage moot in practice.
      All in all, I really think it comes down to preference and use case. For me, lower 1/3rd is fine, even if I don't think it's quite as comfortable. The mount variety is greater, it works well with magnifiers and other accessories out of the box, and if I need a higher mount, I can just put a riser under my optics. 2.33 is fine, but by no means do I think most people need to blow $500 on mounts to achieve it when it's less an upgrade and more a sidegrade.

    • @matthewriegner5180
      @matthewriegner5180 Год назад +4

      @@KeterMalkuth i agree. I would also add that if you have multiple height optics across different rifle set ups makes training consistency getting behind the glass a little more difficult.

    Heads up shooting only works on little cartridges. Feel free to try that same posture with a 45-70. The tactical cowboy crowd complaints about the recoil from mild loads because they mount optics really high on low comb stocks. Same for shotguns, high optic equals high discomfort.
    On a more practical level I do think I have a valid question. You need space for your nods to be over the receiver in order to use your passive aiming. How about a scout scope 2-7 with a piggy back micro dot as a do all setup? The closest my Burris 2-7 can be is flush with the end of the receiver, which leaves the entire upper clear.
