I don't know what people expected to happen Russia could not allow Ukraine to join with NATO an organization that was made to fight against Russia.
I doubt any of this would have happened if NATO didn't try to make Ukraine join them Russia had to respond they could not allow another border state to fourm an alliance with NATO.

Nobody is going to "hold" Ukraine. The main goal of Russia is the "demilitarization" of Ukraine and the removal of the pro-Western government that seized power as a result of the Ukrainian revolution of 2014.
As can be seen from numerous videos, the Russians try not to touch the local population and they are accordingly normal towards the Russians. After the removal of the power of American proteges, Ukraine will again become an ally of Russia and there will be no trite need for Russian troops in Ukraine.
