  • Hi everyone, it's Annabel, welcome back to my channel!
    In today's video we are going to be taking a look at my Dendrobium Phalaenopsis types. I only have four, but since they have all rebloomed for me and three are currently in bloom/spike, I thought now would be a great time to do a video!
    I'll be sharing my thoughts on growing them plus a few tips for success which I've picked up with them, having made a few mistakes of my own to share!
    I hope you have enjoyed this video! Thanks for watching :-)

    Thank you! One thing that I really appreciate about your videos is that when I want or need to know something, you get straight to the point and tell me what I need to know.....no excuses, gripes about other people etc.... Then again, when I have time to listen to a longer, more personal video, I can do that too... 🤗😁

      Thanks! I notice that my waffling is directly proportional to how tired I am, so you may get more rambly videos sometimes 😂

    That tall one in the thumbnail (snowjade) is actually the first Den phal that actually tricked me at first into thinking it was a phalaenopsis. If more of them looked like that i would have understood better why they were named like that, lol

    Thanks for showing us your Dend. Phals which not many growers seem to have in their collections. Don't know why they have declined in popularity. I have nine of various colourings and sizes,very forgiving and have tolerated my attempts at growing them in bark or clay balls ( disaster). They are now growing well in spag. moss in almost cattleya light. long lasting blooms, what more can one want ?

    I love the purple with apple green in the center . I’ve seen it in your previous video and I’m glad you post her again . I’ve been searching for this color since I’ve seen it in your previous video.😍😊👍

      Unfortunately I still can't find an ID but I'll let you know as soon as I find one! I did stumble across this picture on the orchid roots website which looks similar. But it's just listed under dendrobium bigibbum hybrids so that helps us not at all! This is the close image I found: bluenanta.com/detail/57206/species_detail/?tab=sum&role=pub . It's about halfway down the page. But that's as close as I can get and doesn't help 😅

      @@TheOrchidRoom Annabel, I bought some Den Phals from Wichmann last November/December, one of which was called “Summer candy” and it’s identical to your pink with green centred one. Does that help you with the ID?

      My theory is, when you ignore them and put them in disgrace behind another plant, they think about their behaviour 😂 didn't work with these guys though, because, well, light 😂

    Great video, really informative . I have just started collecting orchids for past 1.5 years back . My den phals keep producing new canes and roots but am yet to see blooms any advise ?

    • @TheOrchidRoom
      @TheOrchidRoom  3 года назад +1

      Hi! Usually if the plant is otherwise healthy, lack of blooming is caused by not enough light. So without knowing more that would be my guess. Try moving it to a brighter location? 🙂

  • @Twigarati

    I guess I have a third variety of Den Phals... super stunted size 😂 in comparison to your ‘smaller’ growing ones, mine are half that size 😂... which is fine, I need the space they would otherwise take up. Having said that... except for 2 new growths on some of mine, a lot of moth larvae damage on other new growths, which affects photosynthesis in general... next year I’ll know what I have to watch out for. But yeah... this year wasn’t very good for Den Phals... at least the stunted new growths chucked out roots anyway 😬

    • @TheOrchidRoom
      @TheOrchidRoom  4 года назад +1

      These moth larvae sound like devil spawn!! Awful! Hopefully next year will be a better year for your den phals, like you say, roots are the main thing! I'm keeping my fingers crossed for your little guys! They sound cute, the bonsai version of den phals? 😀

    they are the easiest plants I ever had, even when I bought nearly dead Polar Fire with just one cane he actually managed to pull out and started producing 2 new ones and some extra roots to survive, after 4 months he has 9 canes all together :D they do need warmer climate and a lots of bright light but those blooms are worth it, simply amazing and stunning, especially in Sunny Cocktail and Polar Fire

      I agree, they've taken my abuse and still done well so that makes them must haves in my books! Glad to hear yours arendoing great Also!! 😀 I did have a look on the sa nook page and can find one similar but it isn't the same 😢 I did see, on the orchid roots website for the bigibbum, someone has posted this green one as a bigibbum- but no ID! Wahh 😢😅

    Have been trying to figure out for last 2 years what is wrong with mine. it grows, hasn't bloomed for 3 years and my canes only have like 3 to 4 leaves on each cane. The leaves on yours are much darker than mine, taller and much more leaves. I have mine on a west facing window getting sunset rays and I try to keep up humidity. It's loosely in bark so it dries fast

    • @TheOrchidRoom
      @TheOrchidRoom  3 года назад

      If the leaves are darker that usually indicates extra chlorophyll production by the plant to compensate for not getting enough light (if they're a darker green colour that is). Coupled with the fact that yours haven't bloomed and they are growing ok, along with most dendrobium 'phalaenopsis type' being high light (bigibbum is an Australian dendrobium), it sounds like you may need to increase light quality or duration.

    How do I know which one I have?

    • @TheOrchidRoom
      @TheOrchidRoom  4 года назад

      In europe the main supplier is sa-nook so usually identifying is pretty easy. Flower colour and overall plant size are the two factors that differ the most when IDing 😄The banana chocolate also has really unique purple striping patterns down the canes.
