Ranma one in half. He is cursed to turn into the redhead girl every time he is splashed with cold water, and back to his male self with hot water. Multiple characters in the show have similar curses, with his dad turning into the Panda you see. Also, since Ranma isn´t used to having to be modest, sometimes he´d flash the redhead´s boobs without thinking about it.
Rumiko Takahashi is one of the legends of Japanese media. Shes written tons of different stories not just Ranma. Most popular was the classic anime and manga Inuyasha!
the way Ranma 1/2 handles fanservice is interesting, because the author is a woman, and this series in particular seems really laissez faire about gender stuff in general. there's a lot of casual nudity, but the tone of it is sort of like... the kind of thing that'd be normal to see in a typical Japanese bath house, with a layer of pinup voyeurism. the series is cute and fun about it's sexy stuff. the very most basic premise: Ranma, our main character, fell into a cursed hot spring while he was martial arts training with his father. the curse he acquired causes him to turn into a girl whenever he's splashed with cold water. hot water turns him back to normal though. when they return from their training, Ranma finds out that his father promised an old friend of his, that one of his daughters could marry Ranma. turns out, Ranma's dad offers Ranma's hand in marriage a lot, as collateral for various debts he's accrued. this is how Ranma comes to meet Akane, the youngest of three sisters, to whom he is betrothed. she already has her sights set on another man though... a man, who only has eyes for one of her older sisters. and thus begins the extremely tangled web of relationships that crops up around these two, while Ranma and Akane themselves have this sort of bickering tsundere "it's not like I _like_ you!" kind of dynamic. and it only gets more complicated when half the guys in the cast fall for Ranma's secret-alter-ego girl form, who is still Ranma, so he's completely not interested in any of them. it's a fun series... though, as you might expect, it's a bit dated by now. a lot of anime's most popular (and eventually overused) tropes were popularized with this series, so it could feel a bit generic... until you realize that it was probably one of the first series to codify some of this stuff. and you can kind of see why it would've caught on, based on the way this series does it.
Rumiko Takahashi knew how to write interesting stories both characters and stories all together as the story flows in many of her works. Just like the author of dragon ball Z and many others from that era who knew what it was best or what the loved to do with their creations. That was real passion just like now days authors trying to revolutionize again anime with greater hights. Long live anime. 💘
The idea as that Ranma still considers himself a man as a girl. Most people should be able to notice that the fanservice is like 85% ranma, so it is performed by a guy.
Ranma one half is a martial arts sitcom about a boy who can literally turn into a girl. It is a curse that he wants to get rid of, but he uses it to his advantage sometimes.
Well, Ranma was broadcast at a time in Japan where there was no strict censorship with nudity in programs for the general audience. At that time, in children's TV shows you could see naked characters, some shows still do it now but it is not as explicit as it was before.
When you look into history, Japanese culture overall had a very different relationship to nudity. It wasn't necessarily sexual at all. What was considered "sexy" was luxurity, that's why oiran wore so many layers of clothes. Nudity was a part of life, women openly breastfeeding their children in public was nothing strange, working class people could move around outside in only loincloth without anyone batting an eye.
The anime title is pronounced "Rah-n-ma One Half". The One-Half in the title is a reference to Ranma himself. He has a curse that changes his gender when he's splashed with water. Cold water turns him into a girl with red hair, and warm water turns him back into a boy. The comedy comes from him transforming at the most awkward of moments. Through various situations, sometimes caused by his idiot father, Ranma is engaged to multiple girls, and most of the show's comedy stems from this or his obsession with finding a cure for his curse. Someone already mentioned the manga was written by Rumiko Takahashi, the Queen of Manga, who also wrote Urusei Yatsura and Inuyasha. The panda is Ranma's father, he has a curse similar to Ranma's, but he turns into a Panda. Oh, Ranma's female half gets naked a lot, this is definitely not a kid's show. Takahashi-san put a lot of fan service into her manga.
Ranma 1/2 was incredibly popular in Mexico and Latin America in the 90s (that's why all the comments were in Spanish) and was shown on national television to the joy of children and teenagers and to the horror of parents (although they toned it down and censored many scenes).
Ah, Explaining old school anime to you youngsters: Anime in the late 80s, early 90s had no issues showing a little T&A for both comedic and fan service purposes. This changed when the anime industry figured out that they could make lots of money licensing anime for the west, and the west's attitude being rather Victorian about the subject (don't you think it's odd that in the west it's more acceptable for children to see shown someone getting decapitated than showing a little T&A? Japan didn't used to be like that 30 years ago). So yes, the show is played for fun, not perviness. The reason the songs sound, for the most part, to be from the same group is because it is. The show, as you eventually realized is about a guy named Ranma who, when slashed with cold water, turns into a girl (and warm water undoes the effect) - Hence "Ranma one half" - the name of the show. Many of the rest of the rest of the cast has other transformations - like Ranma's dad into the panda, another guy into a pet pig, and other characters into cats and geese, etc. Female Ranma (aka Ranma-chan, as opposed to male Ranma-kun) is voiced by the legendary Megumi Hayashibara who voiced pretty much almost every female anime voice at the time (including Rei Ayanami from Eva and Lina Inverse from Slayers). She also sang many opening and ending themes in anime especially for ones she was in including many hits.
Yep, people need to realize that anime like Ranma 1/2 was regularly brodcast on TV in Japan, and it was nothing to show topless females like every other episode on average. But, most of it in Ranma's case was for comedic effect, they neve really overly sexualized the bare breasts. And yes, it was also there for fan service too. Ahhh... Megumi Hayashibara. I'm trying to get a few of these anime reactors to go through some of her best anime opening songs, as she is undoubtedly the Queen of 90's anime openings!! In my opinion, at least!
@@RyoHazuki224 honestly with a catalog of as many great songs as Megumi has, it'd be hard to narrow it down to a list small enough to have reactors agree to it. The absolute ridiculous amount of anime OP/EDs she sung mega hits for is staggering. (Slayers, Lost Universe, Saber Marionette J, Love Hina, Shaman King, Cat Girl Nuku Nuku, and so many more). ruclips.net/p/OLAK5uy_ncL-Aylr4T3LX63v3Q0KIgzn0Jz3JDKM4
This does not apply to the entire west, here in germany Ranma was shown during the afternoon uncensored with T&A fully visible, it's not nearly as much of an issue in europe as it is in america.
See this was an anime made before america enforced the "woman chest is satan" rule around the world, so boobs were a lot less of an issue. So anime could have some bare chests scenes at some point and not be considered deranged or overly perverted
Thank you for reacting to these. Ranma 1/2 is sentimental favorite of mine. It was the first anime I saw uncensored back when I was in elementary school.
Sadly this show can never be on Twitch because it does have nudity, it isn't a lewd series per say but lots of times when Ranma the MC gets wet he doesn't care much to cover up. It's a Martial arts comedy show. The water thing is a hot/cold thing the curse that the characters are under causes cold water to change them into their alternate forms and hot water reverts them back to their original forms. The curse thing is an area in China with a bunch of small springs, in each of these springs an "insert person or animal here" drowned. If a person falls into a spring they get cursed to become that creature who drowned in the spring they fell into. The main character Ranma fell into the "spring of the drowned girl", his father a Panda, his childhood rival a small piglet, one of his fiancee's a cat, dude chasing after her a duck, if memory serves from the manga there was a Chinese dragon, a white tiger and probably a few others. Some weren't canon since they showed up in Anime original OAVs and Movies. Ranma ends up mostly through his fathers nefarious machinations with 3 fiancees (more in the non canon stuff), one was self imposed but 2 others were his fathers fault. A lot of the comedy is that he has to deal with these women, guys going after his female half and also hiding from his mother. He and his father would have to commit ritual seppuku (the person has to stab their belly with a short sword while another beheads) because his father promised to make him a man when they return only to be the one who kicked into the spring that turned him into a girl.
Back in the 80s and early 90s, Japan broadcasting wasn't as strict on nudity (topless) as it is today Even Kid Goku had his wee wee shown on TV on multiple occasions
This might be my most nostalgic anime. Essentially the main character was knocked into a cursed spring of drowned girl(some other characters have fallen into cursed springs of other things such as his father fell into a Panda cursed spring). So cold water turns him into a girl and he many times takes full advantage of the fact he can be a girl. It is a martial arts comedy with all these wacky martial arts styles and abilities. Also lots of silly teenage crushes and multiple fiancèe comedy. Mostly episodic series so it is always a fun watch randomly. Also it has the biggest pervert menace in anime, Happosai. Little old man who essentially acts like a big baby goes around stealing underwear for his collection and groping girls but is also the master of the main character's martial arts style. He is so strong that no one can physically stop him so all the drama he causes for the main characters makes them need to find a clever solution to deal with essentially an old overpowered pervert baby. Such a funny menace, I love him!
Aah to be a kid in the 90s again. Thank you for this. The show is hilarious even today and I'd 100% watch a reaction to this, but given how old it is I reckon most of the people sadly wouldn't care.
In this era Megumi Hayashibara voiced alot of female MC's and alot of times also did the intros for her respective shows. She plays Female Ranma here, and you should 100% check out Slayers and Record of Lodoss War for this generation.
If you want Old School anime with fun OPs, then react to Slayers! There are 5 OPs. In order of Seasons: Slayers = "Get Along" (link: ruclips.net/video/C9oo-ZPB5oI/видео.html ) Slayers Next = "Give A Reason" (link: ruclips.net/video/5R9ZaIGgNnc/видео.html ) Slayers Try = "Breeze" (link: ruclips.net/video/O5rJRlq11pc/видео.html ) Slayers Revolution = "Plenty of Grit" (link: ruclips.net/video/iIJN7X65ETE/видео.html ) Slayers Evolution-R = "Front Breaking" (link: ruclips.net/video/PgT5mgYyaGg/видео.html ) All the openings are performed by Megumi Hayashibara, who also does the voice of the main character in the show. Megumi Hayashibara also does the voice of the female Ranma in Ranma 1/2.
Ranma is such classic, i watch it every Saturday morning, i was 14 at that time. Such feel good show, though there are some "cultured" scenes but it's mostly comedy and slice of life with a bit of drama sometimes. Hearing these openings are Nostalgic ❤
Thanks for reacting to this. Ranma 1/2 is one of the first anime I started watching back in 2001 when I was 21. I'm 44 and I still love the anime so it's very nostalgic for me. The OVAs have some good songs as well. The Ballad of Ranma and Akane is my favorite. I'd also love it if you reacted to Case Closed (Detective Conan) openings, Lupin III part 2, 4-6 OPs and EDs, and SKET Dance OPs and ED's.
The reason for this being rated U is because in the 90's anime was seen just like anyother cartoon. There are a lot of anime shows and movies that air because no one actually cared to check. Loved Ranma 1/2, it's really nostalgic. It's was a well -known show in latin america in the late 90's-early 2000's
Same here me loved the 90’s anime it was a golden era even with its opening from Ranma 1/2 voices Made by Mexican voices who had the talent. I loved so much it was so revolutionary that allow or what we all know for those who understand the history was a small window for talented people and many other areas of society to grow. Anyways it was a blast. I won’t forget that era.
Wow, flash from the past. Takahashi Rumiko's work (also mangaka for Inuyasha and Urusei Yatsura and many more). Thanks for the reaction, Luke. Here are my 5 recommendations for your next OP & ED reactions: 1. Macross Frontier ED & OP (esp the EDs like "Diamond Crevasse" & "Northern Cross" are a MUST! and their longer forms!) 2. Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha OP & ED (with 5 series and 4 movies; OPs sung by that era's anisong queen) 3. Shakugan no Shana OP & ED (since u have watched Toaru OPs, they have some some similar singers) 4. Vandread OP & ED (fire 90s retro songs) 5. Horizon in the middle of Nowhere OP & ED Let's toss in Inuyasha's full collection of OP/EDs too. Luke's only reacted to OP1.
Ah, nostalgia! I used to watch this back in the late 90s when I got into anime. The original TV series is from 1989-92, with multiple movies and shorter direct to video series until the 2000s. But, there's a remake TV series coming to Netflix next month with the same voice cast! This is a fun series. It's a classic comedy romance.
Ranma 1/2 was literally my jumping off point for my lifelong love of anime and Japan. I fell in love with the music, found out the singers were the Seiyuu (voice actors) who made a fake group called DoCo and I ended up buying all the music on CDs for WAY too much money. The art style, the music, and the comedy became the basis for a lot of other tropes of that era. You may not understand how important some of these older shows are to the generation that made anime popular and brought it to our overseas shores. 'Bubblegum Crisis' kicked off the Cyberpunk movement 'Ranma 1/2' implanted harems and romantic comedy tropes like gendgerbending. It also introduced us to Megumi Hayashibara. THANK YOU RANMA. 'Akira' proved adult, mature themes could be addressed in animated form in a theater, and thrive.
Actually it's probably Blade Runner that kicked off cyberpunk and was actually a huge influence on Bubblegum Crisis according to its creator. The Boomers in Bubblegum crisis are directly inspired by the Replicants in Blade Runner for instance.
@@aruak321 I was referring to the anime movement, not the hollywood one.. we all know BGC was obviously inspired by Blade Runner, thank you for your nerdging. you forgot the 'Umm' before your 'actually'
This show was my first anime love. Haven’t seen it in 2 decades. And it’s pretty much an innocent comedy. Some fan service which was common even back then.
I remember seeing a couple episodes of this when I was a kid. Didn't see much of it because back then, the TV reception was poor. It was way back when you had to strangle the antenna to get a decent view of the screen 😅
This is one of the first harem anime. Ranma when he is a boy have a lot of girls who likes him and if Ranma turns into a girl there are still a lot of boys who likes him, He gets both gender 😅 Also Akane if I'm not mistaken is the first known anime Tsundere. This anime is so fun to watch and also have action in it. Its really nostalgic. I remember watching this when internet is not really a thing that time when we only watch anime on our local tv channel with dub cause there is no way you can watch anime on other platforms (Cellphone at that time still have no camera and computers are only for professionals 😅)
You think you've seen the intro before because many animes back then (late 80s/early 90s) had intros with the main characters running somewhere. Never found out what their destinations were, just kept running.
The Ranma One Half anime started in 1989. The TV series ended in 1992. There were movies and direct to video episodes after that. Mostly in the 90s, but there was one in 2008. If you want 60s anime, there is Tetsuwan Atom/Astro Boy, Sally the Witch, Speed Racer/Mach Go Go Go, Tetsujin 28/Gigantor.
Any chance of a reaction to the Ranma 1/2 OVA openings? They show a bit more of the character relations to each other than the TV show openings but they do give the idea that the show is a musical as the characters are singing the song that plays over the opening (both in animation AND as the VA's, fictional sorta in-universe but not really excluding certain specials, music group DoCo).
Ranma 1/2 is created by the same woman who made Urusei Yatsura and Inuyasha (she has a lot of popular series!) and this series is a martial arts anime. I'm surprised you had trouble finding the OPs since I remember seeing a compilation video of all the OPs a while back. The anime has a lot of fanservice and some pervy characters especially an old man martial arts master lol. There are many topless scenes especially of Ranma in his girl mode played for comedy (although I don't remember nipples being drawn in and it was mostly barbie anatomy but maybe it was censored when it was aired in tv). I watched this as a kid and didn't get bothered by the fanservice scenes (although I did get annoyed at the pervy old man). The main character, Ranma and his dad trained somewhere in China where there are cursed springs. Ranma fell in the Spring of the Drowned Girl and turns into a red-haired girl when he gets wet using cold water while his dad fell in the panda spring and turns into a panda. They turn back when wet with hot water and Ranma's goal is to find the spring that could take the curse away forever. There's some romance too as Ranma's dad had him engaged to a girl named Akane and the two didn't get along at first. This is sort of a harem anime as well as Ranma have several other girls who like him (Ranma's girl mode also has some guys interested in her as well lol). I'm still recommending listening to the OPs of Inuyasha since you've seen already seen OPs of other Rumiko Takahashi works like Urusei Yatsura and Ranma 1/2.

One of the first anime I watched. As the original DVD said: "It's the story of a boy that turns into a girl, a dad that turns into a panda, and the weird Chinese curse that did it to them."
Yes, yes! We need more reactions like this...i suggest Kimagure Orange Road, Touch, Maison Ikkoku, City Hunter openings and Bubblegum Crisis soundtrack themes
Noriko Hidaka is in Ranma 1/2 and Touch. Her solo albums are good too. Actress in the Mirror and Natsu no Mirage from KOR, Touch and Ai ga Hitoribocchi from Touch, Kanashimi yo Konnichi wa by Saito Yuki and Hidamari by Kozo Murashita from Maison Ikkoku, Ashita e Touchdown and Victory from Bubblegum Crisis are all fantastic songs.
Ranma was the reason I started listening to Japanese music, I really loved 2nd and 3rd Opening, the groups are Ribbon, CoCo and Azusa Senou who was member of CoCo! Japanese idols groups in the 90s✨️
Dont know if anyone brought it up, but the Openings (AND ENDINGS, which are equally awesome) and some were done by a group called CoCo, which were also covered by DoCo composed of the female VA's for the series. In the 90's this series was one of the biggest hits. God, I love this series so much, it was literally THE first anime I ever watched, and its so wholesome, and action packed, and sometimes totally hits the heartstrings. I marathon the series at least once every 2ish years.
Ranma One Half. The guy in red is Ranma when he touches cold water he is cursed to turn into a girl only able to change back with hot water. As an handsome young man he is constantly running away from Potential Romantic Rivals or Suitors in both Genders. However he only really wants to focus on becoming the best Martial Arts Master and freeing himself of his curse. His father (who like him is cursed to turn into a giant panda in the same way) has had Ranma and his (the fathers) best friends youngest daughter (Akane the dark haired girl we see Ranma with the most) promised to each other since their birth so that Ranma can inherit the bests friends family dojo and carry on the martial arts legacy. One problem. Akane hates men, luckily Ranma has a work around.
Person that wrote Ranma also did Inuyasha and Urusei yatsura amongst others she kinda codified a lot of tropes used in rom coms to this day Speaking of which why not react to the old Urusei Yatsura ops since you've been reacting to the remake ops.
i am so excited about the remake. ranma 1/2 was my fave anime 30 years ago when i was a teenager. these opening songs are making me so nostagic. this anime is def not for kids lol
Martial arts mayhem and ancient Chinese curses mixed with arranged marriages. Soun Tendo and Genma Saotome trained under their master Happosai. When the pair went different ways, Genma took his son Ranma on the road to train as Soun ran his household dojo. Soun had three daughters, and promised to have one of the three marry Ranma to unite their schools. Kasumi, Nabiki, and Akane never knew of the promise until a postcard arrived announcing the Saotomes were coming to visit. It all begins on a rainy day with a pigtailed girl running away from a giant panda. And chaos ensues...
I wasn't expecting this. I love it!! My favorite is op 3. It is so nostalgic for me 💜 Late 80s animes had many sus scenes and nakedness in comedy 😂 and nobody lose their heads back then 😆 Ranma is pure comedy but really lovely and sometimes wholesome😊
this is literally the last thing I expected you to react to and I'm super happy! maybe someone in your community could put together a playlist of nostalgic anime OPs to react to
Ranma ½ is my favourite show to this day. It is a Martial Arts Comedy, a really rare genre. The reason why it sounded that all the songs were made by the same group is because they WERE. The Unit is called DoCo and is comprised of the primary cast of the show. (And includes the LEGENDARY Megumi Hayashibara who also voices the female Ranma). The premise of the show is that Ranma is a boy who has a curse on him that when he is splashed with cold water he turns into a girl (Hence the ½ as he's literally half boy, and half girl). Yes, the show has a lot of boobs primarily because having grown up as a boy, Ranma doesn't have the instinctive feminine modesty to cover up his chest when he is exposed for any reason (How many guys do you know get seen shirtless and immediately try to cover up?) Japan is also a different culture, they do not have the western cultural uptightness regarding nudity that primarily stems from Christianity (Since Japan is primarily Budhist/Shinto faith where sexuality of any form is not a sin). Hell, look up the Japanese "Penis Festival" to understand that in Japan the human body is not an issue, you'll probably be shocked at what you read about that festival. The only thing Japan DOES have an issue with, is actual sexual penetration, which is always censored even in adult material (It's the law). Back to Ranma ½, it's a very wholesome show, but it does have some very cheeky and sus characters. Most of the comedy stems from the fact that when Ranma is a boy, as a skilled martial artist he always seeks a challenge to either defeat someone or protect someone, which makes a whole bunch of girls fall in love with him (it's not just 2). On the other side, when Ranma is a girl she is incredibly cute, which makes several male characters fall for him too. Add in a sprinkling of a bunch of other cursed characters - a girl who turns into a cat, a boy who turns into a pig, boy who turns into a duck, man who turns into a panda (that's actually Ranma's dad - the panda), and a bunch of other and hilarious hijinks ensue. Despite all that, there's still some pretty cool action focused around Martial Arts that are always around in the show. Ever seen Martial Arts Figure Skating? Well, this show has it. How about Martial Arts Rhythmic Gymnastics? Check! Martial Arts Calligraphy? Yup. Good old Days Martial Arts? As in Martial arts using old toys from 60's and before such as cat's cradle, yeah, got that. Martial Arts Cheerleading? Heck yeah! Martial Arts Shogi? As in the Japanese version of chess, yup, got that too! Martial Arts Dining? Yeah, competitive eating taken to 11 and then cranked through an amplifier to boot! Cat-Fu? Yes, a feline focused ancient martial art. Yup, it's truly a terrifying and devastating Martial Art! Martial Arts Tea Ceremony? Yup, even traditional Japanese Tea Ceremony has a Martial Art about it that can devastate an unprepared opponent! I sincerely hope you give this show a chance at some point, even if it's just on your own (but hopefully as a Patreon show, since can't show it on YT or Twitch due to the boobs, and the Western obsession with hiding them). And don't worry about spoilers, since this is a comedy, everything is very much situational (i.e. anime Martial Arts sitcom), so there's not much that can be spoiled. The fun is in what happens in any given episode, not how it concludes. Edit: Fixed CoCo/DoCo (oops)
My God! Ranma 1/2! I grew up with this now almost forgotten anime. Pure madness, never politically correct and unashamed in every way. Maybe not suitable for the 14-year-old kid I was when I watched it but it's done now!
7:25 - "I imagine _so many_ of you are watching this right now and going 'Ah, how nostalgic', right? Right?" [Ranma ½ (1989)] 18:44 - "Only like _three_ of you have seen Bill and Ted." [Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure (1989)]
So many memories. Ranma 1/2 was one of the first anime i watched really love it to this day. Amazing you're showing love for some classic animes :) Here are more classics with pretty good music: Tenku no Escaflowne - Slayers - Rurouni Kenshin 96 - Magic Knight Rayearth
It's very 80's/90's because it is FROM that time period. The first season started airing in 1989. Fans commonly just call it either 'Ranma Half' or 'Ranma one-half'
ova were kind of unoficial season 8 and have another set of openings which were dubed to english so you have 2 versions of each also the va cast of the show formed very popular girls band as for the bub it's the late 80's and since this is a guy's bub it doesn't count :P
This is a late 80s/early 90s anime and the songs won't let you forget it, definitely. You may have been reminded a little of Naruto's first opening, which also has a song that feels very 80s despite being from 2002. EDIT: Also, the comments are in Spanish because it aired in TV in Latin America in the late 90s. Most of the nudity was censored out, of course.
Great reaction to the classic animes, maybe the Rurouni Kenshin anime will attract your interest, just looking at the synopsis it draws you in, if you ever get the chance to watch the ops/eds, you will be surprised, since there is more to the story than what that is seen in them. Speaking of suspicious animes, I haven't seen anyone talk about Sora no Otoshimono, its 2 openings show how direct it is in that sense hahaha. Shakugan no Shana (7 ops and 7 eds) and Kara no Kyoukai (10 eds distributed in 10 highly recommended films of 60 minutes each) cannot be overlooked due to their great soundtrack, if any of these passes through your hands , I assure you will not regret.
Japan, like most other parts of the world, have different ideas about nudity and sensibilities than what American/British Commonwealth find normal. A lot of older anime saw bare breasts as okay, and often a bit of playful comedy. Sometimes there is minor censorship like erasing nipples or something.
In the 80s and early 90s mainstream daytime tv anime such as Gundam, Ranma and Macross would have a few random fan-service casual nude scenes during showers, hot springs, or whatever partly for fan service and partly for emotional or plot reasons - e.g., to make it clear that Ranma turned into a woman when splashed with water while bathing. Ranma is a fairly sweet romantic comedy / school / martial arts show. For a time, Ranma was the big show, about the most popular anime of the period it was running (up there with shows like Bleach or Attack on Titan), as you might guess from how many openings it had. (Also many movies, etc.).
I LOVE this Anime. Loved reading the endless fanfic back in High School. In Japanese culture, you also find a distinct lack of interest in the chest until the modern era. This is because anime was created for Japanese and Americans. You wonder why they have giant boobs there, it's our (North American) fault. Ranma ½ (1989) is an Adventure, Martial arts, Romantic comedy made by the Legendary Rumiko Takahashi Creator of Urusei Yatsura, Maison Ikkoku, Mermaid Saga, Inuyasha, Rin-ne, Mao, and MANY Others. Ranma ½ is the story of Ranma Saotome - a martial artist cursed to change genders with temperature of water. The show features strange martial arts (martial arts tea ceremony, martial arts figure skating, etc), magical artifacts & creatures, multiple women (and men) trying to marry Ranma, and multiple men trying to kill (or marry) Ranma.
Now THIS is a blast from the past. Ranma 1/2 , Slayers and Tenchi Muyo were among the first anime i watched as a kid.😀 Also what fanservice exists in Ranma 1/2 is quite tame compared to the fanservice you see in anime now.
This is still one of my favorite anime series. First time I actually wore out VHS tapes. It is a wholesome martial arts rom-com. Even though it may have a few scenes of nudity, it is not done in a sexual way, but for humorous purposes. Like the first time Ranma changes into a girl, he opens his shirt and you see the boobs and he screams. I do hope you have a chance to watch this anime.
ranma was one of the first anime i had ever watched and it's still one of my favourites to this day. Kuno has the best quotes in the series i swear to god BTW, the basic plot is that Ranma (the boy with black hair and pigtails) was cursed when he fell into the "spring of drowned girl" in China and whenever he's splashed with cold water he turns into a girl and it's only reversed if he's splashed with hot water. Ranma is the ONLY character in the series who you'll see with their breasts exposed in his girl form because he's a boy and doesn't care (which obviously leads to funny situations lots of times). He is also engaged to a lot of different girls even though he doesn't want to be through wacky shennanigans, but the only one that's really recognized by his dad (who is a terrible father btw) is his engagement to Akane, who hates boys (she's not gay, she just hates boys)
Ranma 1/2 is an amazing RomCom made by Rumiko Takahashi, she's also done Urusei Yatsura (Which i remembere you've previously checked out.), as well as Inuyasha, which I'd highly recommend you check out next when you can.
Same here with few anime shows I was able to see on the 90 only on the tv 📺. Thanks to humans and the internet now is widely available from all ranges to all ages very diverse. 🥰 anime is everywhere (not all places)
Ranma 1/2, aka "Gender is bullsh*t" the Anime, is a classic romantic comedy wearing a fantasy martial arts suit. The creator, Rumiko Takahashi, previously wrote Urusei Yatsura and Maison Ikkoku and would go on to create Inuyasha. Although Takahashi claims the title character's gender-swapping was merely a gag meant to get around her apprehension at writing a stereotypical male character, the story's examination of gender and social norms has resonated with people over the years. In Japan, nudity is not seen as tawdry or inherently sexual like many Western societies, so many shows will use nudity for humor. This was especially prevalent in 70s -early 90s manga & anime, eventually falling out of favor when publishers started finding increased success in Western markets, especially with IPs marketed towards children and adolescents ("cartoons are for kids!" and so on).
Ranma 1/2 is a classic among classic. The main character, Ranma, is a 16 years old boy that was curse during a training with his father in China. Cold water turns him into a woman, hot water turns him back into a boy. A lot of character suffered the same fate in the series : panda, cat, duck, little black piggy... Thing is, Ranma is supposed to marry Akane, the younger daughter (16 as well) of a martial art dojo, since Ranma is a martial artist as well. Akane dislike boys and can be very tough, but they eventually fall in love. They're just not the greatest at it and their families try to hard to make them close. Problem is, Ranma's father isn't the best and promised a lot of people his son would marry other girls. That's when Ranma himself doesn't attract creeps, both male and female, on himself. The series is very comical but also tries to coment on subject like identity, gender role and such. For example, Ranma being a boy at heart, doesn't mind using his female body to gain favors. Yet, he was cut off from his mother for training at a young age and it's seen as dishonorable to not be a full man. So, he has to hide from his mother when he's boy but enjoy the attention when he's a girl. He wants to be a full boy but also find people who accept he's not "normal". Rumiko Takashi is the Queen of manga, she has a lot of amazing works upon her sleves, like the Inuyasha for a most recent one. And since the manga is old, like Dragon Ball, yeah, you can see naked people. But while in Dragon Ball, you can see kid Goku half body, it's only the breast in Ranma 1/2. Another time but as a teenage girl, it never shocked me growing up with it. Rumiko Takahashi as a thing for love triangle and such, that's for sure ^^
This show was transmited in open televition whe I was a Child.... yes, I watch it, the serie was a little sencored, but also sell the manga which was not sencored. Was in the time when people think that cartoons where just for kids so we en up watching Saint Seiya (Bt X Neo was also made for the creator of Saint Seiya ), Dragoon Ball, Ranma, Mazinger Z and another bery good series.
Man, this anime is basically my high school years, because it was first aired where I am from as I started it. So nostalgic. We didn't get most of the OP/END videos, because people distributing it were cheap af and didn't give us more than the 1st ones (translated), and on a later release, they didn't even keep them. I'm talking over 30 years ago, though. No one took anime seriously back then.
I really recommend you to watch the anime, for me is like comfort food, a feel good time, the music is timeless and the humour and wackey characters are so endering
back in the early 90s, I used to buy the EGM (electronic games monthly) and they ways had the Ranma 1/2 fight games in the ads. Every month for years. I never did get to play them.
I remember one video game rental place had Ranma 1/2 Hard Battle for the Super Nintendo. It had some characters I didn't know about at the time, like Pantyhose Taro.
Code Geass, Fushigi yuugi, Yamato Nadeshiko, Ranma 1/2 , Inuyasha, Olympus Guardian is my introduction to anime 💀 now realizing why I liked more of female ranma to be with the akane or shampoo, tells so much 😹 it's fruity fr lol

Recommendation for all Slayers OP and ED plz kthnxbye
Many thanks Luke for increasing the number of GOT♥s in the comments section!!
Rumiko Takahashi is one of the legends of Japanese media. Shes written tons of different stories not just Ranma. Most popular was the classic anime and manga Inuyasha!
I've heard she is awesome!! 💯

The old-school anime commenter! I see you everywhere in Yu Yu Hakusho reactions.
True if a top 10 mangaka authors of all time list was made, she’s definitely going to be on that list
You’ll never truly understand her work until you see it/read it
the way Ranma 1/2 handles fanservice is interesting, because the author is a woman, and this series in particular seems really laissez faire about gender stuff in general. there's a lot of casual nudity, but the tone of it is sort of like... the kind of thing that'd be normal to see in a typical Japanese bath house, with a layer of pinup voyeurism. the series is cute and fun about it's sexy stuff.
the very most basic premise: Ranma, our main character, fell into a cursed hot spring while he was martial arts training with his father. the curse he acquired causes him to turn into a girl whenever he's splashed with cold water. hot water turns him back to normal though. when they return from their training, Ranma finds out that his father promised an old friend of his, that one of his daughters could marry Ranma. turns out, Ranma's dad offers Ranma's hand in marriage a lot, as collateral for various debts he's accrued. this is how Ranma comes to meet Akane, the youngest of three sisters, to whom he is betrothed. she already has her sights set on another man though... a man, who only has eyes for one of her older sisters. and thus begins the extremely tangled web of relationships that crops up around these two, while Ranma and Akane themselves have this sort of bickering tsundere "it's not like I _like_ you!" kind of dynamic. and it only gets more complicated when half the guys in the cast fall for Ranma's secret-alter-ego girl form, who is still Ranma, so he's completely not interested in any of them.
it's a fun series... though, as you might expect, it's a bit dated by now. a lot of anime's most popular (and eventually overused) tropes were popularized with this series, so it could feel a bit generic... until you realize that it was probably one of the first series to codify some of this stuff. and you can kind of see why it would've caught on, based on the way this series does it.
Most people should be able to notice that the fanservice is like 85% ranma, so it is performed by a guy.
generic? I think no, Idk
i still love it xd
Remake is coming! octuber 5, Ranma 1/2
Ranma one half is a martial arts sitcom about a boy who can literally turn into a girl. It is a curse that he wants to get rid of, but he uses it to his advantage sometimes.
Simple but profound typo: “martial arts”, not “marital arts”.
I think you mean martial arts but in this sense marital is not exactly wrong
@@captainkatsura26 marital arts was a small arc in the series. this series could have martial arts stamp collecting and it wouldn't be out of place.
Well, Ranma was broadcast at a time in Japan where there was no strict censorship with nudity in programs for the general audience. At that time, in children's TV shows you could see naked characters, some shows still do it now but it is not as explicit as it was before.
Ironically, this has happened because of American audience, as creators now want their works to be easier to distribute over in the US
When you look into history, Japanese culture overall had a very different relationship to nudity.
Pretty much every single 80s Anime had a shower scene.
Incorrect. It's pronounced "Ran-ma One Half".
definitely an icon of anime, i believe it was Ranma that kick-started the whole Harem trope in anime
No! Run ma ni boon no ei chi
Roman alphabet
Ranma ni bun no ichi
I am a Japanes
It would have to be pronounced phonetically "rah-und(shortened)-mah" not the way you pronounced it.
I wouldn't say that it wasn't for kids. It was for _Japanese_ kids, and Japan has different standards about what is acceptable to show children.
Slayers is another great anime from the 90s that you should check out the openings for.
my other favorite childhood anime! Megumi Hayashibara forever
@@coulrophagia YESSS!!!
I did NOT expect a Ranma 1/2 reaction...
Ranma 1/2 was incredibly popular in Mexico and Latin America in the 90s (that's why all the comments were in Spanish) and was shown on national television to the joy of children and teenagers and to the horror of parents (although they toned it down and censored many scenes).
Ah, Explaining old school anime to you youngsters:
Anime in the late 80s, early 90s had no issues showing a little T&A for both comedic and fan service purposes.
@@philippschmidt80 yes true. By west I meant North America, my bad. I know you're less puritanical in Europe.
@@philippschmidt80 yep, in Italy too
See this was an anime made before america enforced the "woman chest is satan" rule around the world, so boobs were a lot less of an issue.
Back in the 80s and early 90s, Japan broadcasting wasn't as strict on nudity (topless) as it is today
Even Kid Goku had his wee wee shown on TV on multiple occasions
Yeah we got the wee wee cut here in Latin America
This show and these openings are just amazing, a true classic
I grew up watching Ranma and their daily shenanigans back in primary school (1990s) 😂

Megumi Hayashibara also does the voice of the female Ranma in Ranma 1/2.
Slayer while i only watched it a few years ago i had soo much fun during it
120% second this! Megumi Hayashibara is a LEGEND of the anime industry! An amazing VA and an amazing singer who sang OP/EDs for over 100 anime!
btw im curious which of the slayers openings is your favorite?
I suggested this too. I'm not sure if he checked them out.
Get Along and Plenty of Grit are good. Also Going History from the radio show Slayers EX and Shining Girl from the Slayers movie.
Ranma is such classic, i watch it every Saturday morning, i was 14 at that time. Such feel good show, though there are some "cultured" scenes but it's mostly comedy and slice of life with a bit of drama sometimes. Hearing these openings are Nostalgic ❤
Urusei yatsura, Ranma 1/2, and Inuyasha are all done by Rumiko Takahashi..
I’d love to see your reaction to inuyasha’s openings!
Thanks for reacting to this. Ranma 1/2 is one of the first anime I started watching
back in 2001 when I was 21. I'm 44 and I still love the anime so it's very nostalgic for me.
The OVAs have some good songs as well. The Ballad of Ranma and Akane is my favorite.
I'd also love it if you reacted to Case Closed (Detective Conan) openings, Lupin III part 2, 4-6 OPs and EDs,
and SKET Dance OPs and ED's.
Here are my 5 recommendations for your next OP & ED reactions:
1. Macross Frontier ED & OP (esp the EDs like "Diamond Crevasse" & "Northern Cross" are a MUST! and their longer forms!)
2. Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha OP & ED (with 5 series and 4 movies; OPs sung by that era's anisong queen)
3. Shakugan no Shana OP & ED (since u have watched Toaru OPs, they have some some similar singers)
4. Vandread OP & ED (fire 90s retro songs)
5. Horizon in the middle of Nowhere OP & ED
Let's toss in Inuyasha's full collection of OP/EDs too. Luke's only reacted to OP1.
For me, the most nostalgic is the first one. But the last one is a banger and my favourite.
'Bubblegum Crisis' kicked off the Cyberpunk movement
'Ranma 1/2' implanted harems and romantic comedy tropes like gendgerbending.
@@kiryukaimemorial127 haha the way you wrote that didn't imply that so forgive me for not understanding something that was unclear 😆
Ranma 1/2 is one of the best anime I ever watched as a kid.
The Ranma One Half anime started in 1989. The TV series ended in 1992. There were movies and direct to video episodes after that. Mostly in the 90s, but there was one in 2008. If you want 60s anime, there is Tetsuwan Atom/Astro Boy, Sally the Witch, Speed Racer/Mach Go Go Go, Tetsujin 28/Gigantor.
holy fuck i did not know the anime was only started 2 years after the manga started
Latin America got a lot of classic anime before Canada or the USA did. I actually the second opening theme the most because of the song.
Ranma 1/2 will always be my favorite, 1st watched it when I was 13
Ranma 1/2 is created by the same woman who made Urusei Yatsura and Inuyasha (she has a lot of popular series!) and this series is a martial arts anime.
I love when you react to classic anime.

@arkphonenix Bubblegum Crisis had an awesome soundtrack!
I will recommend Chihayafuru op's/ed's. Also Girls Last Tour, A Place Further than the Universe, and Asobi Asobase.
Person that wrote Ranma also did Inuyasha and Urusei yatsura amongst others she kinda codified a lot of tropes used in rom coms to this day
Speaking of which why not react to the old Urusei Yatsura ops since you've been reacting to the remake ops.
i am so excited about the remake. ranma 1/2 was my fave anime 30 years ago when i was a teenager. these opening songs are making me so nostagic. this anime is def not for kids lol
A classic and my favorite work by sensei Rumiko Takahashi. It was because of this anime that I truly discovered the anime universe and otaku culture.
It is so nostalgic for me 💜
Late 80s animes had many sus scenes and nakedness in comedy 😂 and nobody lose their heads back then 😆
Ranma is pure comedy but really lovely and sometimes wholesome😊
this is literally the last thing I expected you to react to and I'm super happy! maybe someone in your community could put together a playlist of nostalgic anime OPs to react to
Wow, I did not expect Ranma 1/2. A welcomed surprise for sure!
Hell yeah, one of my favorite Anime ever.
Anime in the 80's and early 90's weren't afraid to show tasteful nudity.
I *love* Ranma
Ranma ½ is my favourite show to this day. It is a Martial Arts Comedy, a really rare genre. The reason why it sounded that all the songs were made by the same group is because they WERE. The Unit is called DoCo and is comprised of the primary cast of the show. (And includes the LEGENDARY Megumi Hayashibara who also voices the female Ranma).
The premise of the show is that Ranma is a boy who has a curse on him that when he is splashed with cold water he turns into a girl (Hence the ½ as he's literally half boy, and half girl). Yes, the show has a lot of boobs primarily because having grown up as a boy, Ranma doesn't have the instinctive feminine modesty to cover up his chest when he is exposed for any reason (How many guys do you know get seen shirtless and immediately try to cover up?)
Japan is also a different culture, they do not have the western cultural uptightness regarding nudity that primarily stems from Christianity (Since Japan is primarily Budhist/Shinto faith where sexuality of any form is not a sin).
CoCo was a jpop group. They sang the opening theme Omoide ga Ippai and the ending theme Equal Romance. The voice cast group was DoCo.
@@TheErsuThank you, corrected it.
My God!
Right?" [Ranma ½ (1989)]
18:44 - "Only like _three_ of you have seen Bill and Ted." [Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure (1989)]
MY CHILDHOOD ❤❤❤❤
I can't believe I missed this when it came out 😢
So many memories.
What's even better is that it is coming back
ova were kind of unoficial season 8 and have another set of openings which were dubed to english so you have 2 versions of each
also the va cast of the show formed very popular girls band
as for the bub it's the late 80's and since this is a guy's bub it doesn't count :P
This was my first anime, loved it, looking forward to the remake that is just about to ralease.
You are a rare person to respond to a 30 year old anime OP.
Are you prepping for the new series of RANMA1/2 to start on October 5 this year?😂
I watched Ranma when I was 5 uncensored they passed it in a kids channel in the 90s. There’s many topless scenes
Ranma 1/2 , Slayers and Tenchi Muyo were among the first anime i watched as a kid.😀
Also what fanservice exists in Ranma 1/2 is quite tame compared to the fanservice you see in anime now.
Ranma has many fiances because his father sold his hand in marriage several times for food.
Ranma 1/2 is a claasic
And hold my longest binge record 38 episodes with no breaks
Might be a golden reaction opportunity now that they are releasing a remake of it. It's currently coming out on Netflix.
Kuno has the best quotes in the series i swear to god
BTW, the basic plot is that Ranma (the boy with black hair and pigtails) was cursed when he fell into the "spring of drowned girl" in China and whenever he's splashed with cold water he turns into a girl and it's only reversed if he's splashed with hot water.
Ranma!!! my childhood anime, it is fun. The creator mangaka is Rumiko Takahashi, who also made Urusei Yatsura and Inu-Yasha
next do all the openings and endings of INU-YASHA PLEASE
Ranma 1/2 is an amazing RomCom made by Rumiko Takahashi, she's also done Urusei Yatsura (Which i remembere you've previously checked out.), as well as Inuyasha, which I'd highly recommend you check out next when you can.
ranma is such a classic, one series ill always love
Same here with few anime shows I was able to see on the 90 only on the tv 📺. Thanks to humans and the internet now is widely available from all ranges to all ages very diverse. 🥰 anime is everywhere (not all places)
Ranma is one of those classics.
And, they did an OVA where the show is just literally them doing live concert, and they sing,
Holy shite! Ranma!?
Well now I feel the need to go back and watch Ranma again XD
Many thanks Luke for increasing the number of GOT♥s in the comments section!!
this brings back memories this is one of my favorite anime I also finished reading this on the manga long time ago
Ranma 1/2 is getting a remake IT starts this year im exited
1st episode premiered on April 15, 1989.
If possible, please react to Slayers OP and ED
back in the early 90s, I used to buy the EGM (electronic games monthly) and they ways had the Ranma 1/2 fight games in the ads. Every month for years. I never did get to play them.
I remember one video game rental place had Ranma 1/2 Hard Battle for the Super Nintendo. It had some characters I didn't know about at the time, like Pantyhose Taro.
I would LOVE to see a reaction to Ranma 1/2, it’s one of my favorite anime of all time. It’s such a fun watch.
XD That comedic timing with talking about how manly and chad Ranma is was SO GOOD. lol
らんま1/2の曲は中毒性があって、脳内を駆け回る♪
