history/progression of female anime characters (though the video is 13 years old, so that means that it only covers up to ~ 2011), really really well done amv video of female anime characters (there's so many of them, every-time catch a new frame of them, laughs): ruclips.net/video/WsXay2GMF-g/видео.html (anime girl empire) younger/newer generations of anime fans probably won't know most of them (character and anime), sadly... this really tests your fandom, in how many you know (and can spot/see/notice, lol, as its rapid fire frames, unless you "cheat" and constantly pause and/or slow down the video play rate, lol), grins
The reason the anime gets darker is because of Neon Genesis Evangelion. Why not react to "how Neon Genesis Evangelion altered the anime forever" if you are not planning to watch the series.
Doraemon is basically Japanese Mickey Mouse. Very well known. Also Dr. Slump, the one you said is Dragonball animation vibes is because they are created by the same person. Dr. Slump was made before Dragonball and the creator even put the doctor slump characters in a crossover in dragon ball.
Fun fact! Sazae-san is *STILL* running! Not re-runs either, they're still making new episodes! In fact, it holds the Guinness World Record for the longest-running animated television series at over 2,640 episodes! It was also one of the last anime to switch from cel animation to digital!
I think it must be longest runing tv thing and second longest running peace of any media because there is a music which older and writing to this day. If I remember correctly
@@PAINNN666 iirc the record for all tv is held by a number of different game shows, variety shows, and news related shows. There's even a couple scripted shows that are up there too. I know Sazae-san is up there, but there's some that dwarf even it in either how long it has been running or how many episodes there are. It being the longest running animated show is accurate though
Fun fact sazae san (1969) is still airing to this day. I'm pretty sure it's the longest anime to ever exist. It's getting close to reaching 8000 episodes so roughly 7-8x the length of one piece.
Yes and no. Yes it still has more episodes than One Piece but its not really "8,000" episodes worth of run time. That number comes from the distinct "segments" it has which each run about 10 minutes, usually 2 per episode. In terms of comparative run time for a 20 or so minute episode like other anime it more like 2,640 episodes. Still over 2x more than One Piece, but not 7-8x by runtime. Very impressive still.
Captain Tsubasa is a globally popular soccer manga. Zidane, Thierry Henry , Del Piero...many legendary football players said they were fans of that comic. Tsubasa transferred to FC Barcelona in the manga. Then, a press conference to join FC Barcelona was held in real.
"Kimba the white Lion" -- "Is that the Japanese Lion King?" :) -- Disney ripped it off from Japan. Oh wait. "adapted it and didn't give credit" :) Edit: -- you've probably heard the theme from Gatchaman because about 5-10 years later, it was dubbed and adapted and shown in America. I watched it as a kid. It was known as "Battle of the Planets". Also "Space Battleship Yamato" was dubbed and shown in America as "Star Blazers". Watched that one too. :)
Disney not only stole the idea of Kimba the white Lion, they stole the story boards in the begining of the movie from the manga. And Disney stole the african music in the movie too. But fot rich corporations isn't steal, is "inspiration" or "tribute".
@@danielgwynne7266 jas before I’m see the yms I thought the lion king just to inspiration of kimba not rip off of it but after I’m see the yms I’m under understanding it mor
You're way too young Luke, but Gatchaman was screened in the UK as a heavily edited US version called "Battle of the Planets"! (Essential viewing when I was growing up, though a 'Monster/Battle of the week' show.) A few other points - Future Boy Conan was an early project involving the great Hayao Miyazaki; and the original Macross is actually a pretty good show that actually delves into some dark corners (but especially if you can find the full original version, not the 'Robotech' dubbed version - with respectful apologies to those who preferred the latter!) Oh, and these days it looks heavily dated, but Princess Knight really kicked off the trend for strong female leads. But when it comes to anime openings you can't beat the SAO music...
2:19 kimba the white Lion is actually over 25 years older than the lion king, and the story is really similar too. Just one of the many examples where western media blatantly plagiarized anime. The movie Inception for example is heavily "inspired" by the anime movie Paprica, there are multiple scenes that are legit 1 to 1 copies.
@@dadandadandanstory of a lion cub named kimba (in english) that saw his father get murdered and then grow up to be the king of the jungle/forest/savanna. kimba ends up lost in a faraway land, after that he sees his parent's face in the sky, (just like in disney) really no similarities ? finds friends/ people that take care of him. to later go back to his land and rule it as the king. i mean yeah they didn't copy the entire plot there's no humans in the disney. but it's pretty clear that they took heavy inspiration.
interesting to see the old osomatsu-kun opening (so there was a series in 1966, then an alternative version in 1988, and the alternative version called osomatsu-san in 2015...) gegege kitaro is also an old one. had a run in 1969, 1971, 1985, 1996, and 2018. newest addition to this franchise is the Birth of Kitaro movie from 2023.
Love Doraemon!! Its such a fun show! The main premise is that Doraemon(who is a cat robot)comes from the future to help his owner's grandfather as kid make better choices for his life so it wont be miserable later lol. Doraemon uses gadgets from the future to help him out(he keeps all his gadgets in a pocket on his tummy). Its episodic and doesnt really follow a set story, but its super fun and hilarious. The orginal series ran from 1979 to 2005 and the new series has been running since 2005. There is also an English dub that ran on Disney XD from 2014 to 2017. Fun fact, there's been a Doraemon movie every year(except 2005) since 1980!
Saint Seiya is one of the animes that were pioneers in bringing anime from Japan to the world at a time when it was very difficult to see anime on TV and became popular, which encouraged Japan to release more anime to the rest of the world, just like Dragon Ball and Sailor Moon, if you watch anime today, be grateful to these animes that were part of the golden age of anime Yu Yu Hakusho, Ruroni Kenshin, Inuyasha are other animes that show their difference when released, which to this day few animes have managed to replicate
Space Battleship Yamato was huge. It was Star Blazers in the US. I think it varied because it was on local television so some cities didn't even have it. But it was huge with all the kids I knew. When I went to University one of the RA's got the first season on VHS and about 300 people showed up to watch it. Everyone sang the intro.
26:50 May look like that because of the openings, Luke, but actually some were MUCH darker and violent even though they were tagged as being for a younger audience. *Fist of the North Star* (9:42) was pure brutality with people literally exploding, getting sliced into mincemeat, just a lot of death. *Saint Seiya* (10:13) has fights to the death one after another non-stop. *Dragon Ball Z* (10:57) has a lot of geno&%de and a villain that should be in a horror movie. *Yu Yu Hakusho* (12:29), same author of HunterXHunter, is one of the most brutal anime of the 90s, with plenty of body horror on top of it. *Basically what I'm trying to say is, action anime in the 80s and 90s had an amount of violence that was chill for us at the time, but would likely shock people nowadays.* *In fact, I would say JJK is the closest thing to Yu Yu Hakusho's level and style of violence I've seen in recent years. But that's just my opinion.*
No way you don’t know Heidi 😭 Don’t get banished now Luke 6:50 Fun fact you might recognize this as Subarus ring tone in Re:Zero. Another fun fact the dog in a dog of Flanders is called Patrasche as well this is where Re:Zero’s writer got the inspiration from and the staff at white fox went looking for old flip phones to turn it into a ringtone to make that connection About the development of animation in general, like with everything in the world it hugely benefited from digitalization, though studios still do a mix of digital and hand drawn animation especially veterans sticking to the roots. Stuff like 3D / CGI also caused a huge leap (when used properly). For example Mappa has a whole CGI branch and Ufotable who did Fate Stay Night ULBW and Demon Slayer perfected their Blending of 2D characters with 3D backgrounds and elements. In general the anime industry is spread much more thin now though, due to low pay (they get cuts for frames of animation not a set amount of money for working hours) and the popularity of it with, more and more companies trying to just pump out as many anime as they can, completely disregarding the human aspect of the staff at the studios they contract to do the actual work That’s why even when you’re joking about wanting a series sooner than it’s supposed to air, I’m always saying just let them cook bc even with the time they have animation is actual hard work. Just one frame gets drawn 3 times till the final result we see comes about, so every anime you watched probably had a rough draft of the animation, then a draft outlining the shadows and colors and then yet another time they draw over it for the finished key frame that ends up in the Anime
Yes to all of this and I didn't even know there's people out there who don't at least know of the existence of Heidi, it was a very important part of my childhood! I also used to watch Mazinger Z a long time after it aired because for some reason one of the TV broadcasting stations in my country decided it was a good idea to release it dubbed, idk what the decision process was but I'm thankful 😅
@@KegOfMeat I really disagree, but what I do think it's way better at is personality and tone in the animation. And fight animation in general. Granted, it's been a while since I've seen the 90s HxH adaptation so that might not be fair on my part. But we can all agree YYH is really worth a shot.
i started sailor moon recently and understood why it was popular, i just enjoy very much seeing their daily life while being magical girl to save the city
For this one, it is recommended to watch it and other Clamp's work like Tsubasa, Tokyo Babylon, XXXHOLIC etc. They are all associated, it's a Clamp's multi universe and all of them are awesome.
Tomorrow's Joe/Ashita no Joe was such a HUGE manga and anime for it's time it has inspired so many fighting and sport's anime. Many of the cliches and things other anime took inspiration from this great boxing series. The anime is dated a little bit but it's such a inspirational story that is worth a watch or read.
Slayers is probably the BEST mixture of comedy and drama in any anime. More than any anime I've ever seen, they mix the absurdly funny and the dead serious more than anything else. Well maybe One Piece also is really good at that, too.
Luke, just to let you know, No Game No Life was a very popular anime when it came out in 2014.The opening was everywhere. It's just that the hype has died down because the 2nd season still hasn't come out 10 years later.
Ikr everyone I know who watches anime had watched it when it came out and were biggest fans of it. It so big when it came out that literally every discord pfp was from it. I believe if season 2 ever comes out it will reach those heights again.
Because how good it is , they dont want to create it bcs the expetation is too high. 😂 Im still remember shield hero from very good at s1 to thrash s2. 😅
Urusei Yatsura: Rumiko Takahashi's first big work before Ranma 1/2 and InuYasha. It's also an example of on the fly adjustment since the alien girl introduced in episode 1 as a one off antagoinst was so well received that she had to be brought back immediately, after which it took a bit of back and forth to settle onto how her role worked. As far as you watching it, if you have hi-dive check out the remake, it compresses a few things, and smoothes over some 80's stuff, but it's got a lot of the dynamic. Also regarding Cutie Honey, at the very least you should look into the various openings. Lots of variety from the origional 70's opening, the 80's RE: Cutey Honey, the 90's Cutey Honey Flash, the 2000's Shin Cutey Honey and the live action verions Cutey Honey: The Live. Oh plus there's the Cutey honey Universe, don't feel compelled look to hard at that one.
kinda like hiei in yu yu hakusho, lol. he was originally supposed to be generic bad demon that was only there to help kurama steal the mirror in the beginning of the series, but fans liked him so much togashi brought him back.
Hey Luke, at 6:43 (1975) 'A Dog of Flanders', did you notice the tune of the song is the same tune Subaru from Rezero used as his cellphone ring tone? Also the dog in the show is named Patrasche, the same name Subaru gave to his black ground dragon. I recommend you to check out the following regarding anime production to get to know some behind the scenes work: Making of Violet Evergarden (playlist)(KyoAni videos): ruclips.net/p/PLszA82YMumfpyWiorJg1ymBg1j17tNL4q Making Of Violet Evergarden | A Production History: ruclips.net/video/a1Fi5Njzgz4/видео.html Also, you can check out these 2 animes to know more about anime and game production: Shirobako New Game!
Yay! I remember recommending this one way back when I first watched your opening reactions. lol at the Kimba the Whote Lion comment about it being the "Japanese Lion King" cause they say The Lion King is based off on Kimba or even a Kimba rip-off. I don't think there's a proper answer online about it though if it's true. Gegege no Kitaro is a story that revolves around spirits and creatures of Japanese folklore. It's had several remakes and all uses the same theme song only sung by different groups/people. Sazae-san from 1969 is still onging today by the way. One of the, and probably is, the longest running anime ever. Like the Kitaro anime, Cutie Honey had also been remade many times and most have the same OP just sung differently a bit (and yeah, they're all fanservice-y lol). Heidi is based off a foreign book (a lot of anime from back then were based on western novels) and I actually got to watch this one as a kid when it aired here in the Philippines! The only show that made me wish I could live in the mountains lol. Doraemon is a pretty popular series and the movie "Stand by Me" actually made me cry lol. Captain Tsubasa is a popular sport anime and apparently it was the inspiration for a lot of famous athletes irl to get into the sport in the first place. No Game No Life is fairly popular actually and many of us are still waiting for season 2 (Hey, never lose hope! We'll never know...). Shounen anime had gotten more popular over the years so it might be why there's more anime produced of that genre (recently, more and more are reincarnation isekai stories cause it's what sells). There have been a lot of dark series in the past as well btu they're not something everyone watched especially at the time where anime isn't mainstream so there's a lot that people would miss. Inuyasha OPs and EDs are all really good! I hope you get to see all of them someday.
there is some anime like No game no life, suzumiya, madoka magicka that are not really in the public eye anymore so people think they are not that popular when in reality they were the most popular anime of their era. just like attack on titan or death note , they too manage to get a fairly mainstream audience outside of your typical anime fan. suzumiya especialy was basically the Otaku anime of the 2010s. every manga fan was aware of it and people would recreate the dance in it.
2000's, not 2010's. 2010's was dominated by Monogatari, PMMM, and Steins;Gate. 2000's was Lucky Star, Haruhi, Clannad. K-On! was of course the bridge between the decades. You have to remember though, when you say "public eye" you're really just talking about places like Reddit and Twitter. These places mostly foster zoomer and tourist opinion, so unless it's a "happening right this very moment" thing, they have no clue what you're talking about.
Lol watching this, I realize there are some hidden gems people aren't telling you to watch that you ABSOLUTELY need to watch at one point. I think you may need to figure out how to get around to watching some of these because they are absolutely phenomenal animes that have been lost to time. I imagine much of your audience could either be new to anime also or a bit on the younger side (I'm 29 myself) so they likely just don't know what absolute gems some of these other animes are and probably wouldn't vote for them. The most notable ones I could pick out were: YuYu Hakusho - First off, one of the best anime openings of all time even today. Second, it's a CLASSIC among even the classics. For some people it does fall off a bit in the 2nd half but I still think it's absolutely worth the watch and it has some of the best anime moments of all time. Ruroni Kenshin - Once again a CLASSIC however I will fully admit the anime probably hasn't aged well on this one. Still though, it has some of the best, most grounded sword choreography and the story itself is still great. Naruto - you will LOVE Naruto once you get around to it. dont know how it hasn't won yet tbh. This isn't a hidden gem at all but I'm still calling it out lmao The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya - This one is what inspired me to start writing this comment. I'm not fully sure how you are about slice of life anime but this anime was at one point a forerunner for that genre and I'm going to say it even influenced many other animes that came after it in terms of how animes typically deal with character dynamics and development. I'm not even sure it's possible to fully appreciate this one since so anime now do what it was doing back then (absolutely still worth the watch though) but it's an absolutely special anime. At one point it was so popular that it created an entire otaku "religion" called Haruhism LOL another reason it's special is because of how experimental it was despite coming across as a very standard anime. Some parts of the experiment were great while others not so great (Endless Eight whew) but regardless this is absolute hidden gem of an anime (feels strange saying that considering it used to be so popular) and will always remain one of my personal favorites. Gurren Lagann - if you enjoy the opening then you'll probably enjoy the anime. Again, for some people it falls off in the 2nd half but it's absolutely still worth the watch. Clannad/Clannad AS - IT HURTS BUT IT'S SO WORTH IT. Just a bit of a warning though, the 1st season which is just Clannad is a lot more slice of lifey so for some people there are times it drags on but it's still plenty emotional in it's own right. The 2nd season which is Clannad After Story is where the story really shines and it has some of the most emotional anime moments of all time. This anime actually changed my life. Toradora - another hidden gem of an anime. The opening I'll admit isn't anything to really write home about but the actual anime has some of the best DRAMA I've seen in an anime. Angel Beats - lol angel beats is an interesting one because it can be a bit divisive. A lot of people can't get used to it's whacky humor but if you can, then what you get is once again one of the most emotional stories ever told in an anime. I happened to watch this one around the time I was graduating high school and ... well let's just say I was an emotional wreck during that entire time in my life.
Gurren laggan definitely doesn't fall of in the second half. The second half is basically the answer to all the events happening in the first half and the ending is in my opinion the most hype ending of all time
About Doreamon opening it felt way older then it is because the footage for it’s original earlier episodes were lost during the economic crisis in Japan, ever since we don’t know how the original episode looked like since only the opening and few scenes of the original series survived. They did remake them but it was released as a separate series as a remake.
I actually watched and really enjoyed the 1960s Gegege no Kitaro, as well as its more modern remakes, there's been a new version each decade And yeah, I think you should react to the openings of Cutie Honey. There was also basically a new version almost every decade. Not joking, but the manga and its creator, Go Nagai (who also created Mazinger Z and Devilman) started a minor sexual revolution in Japan. And Urusei Yatsura basically finished what Cutie Honey started, pretty much making anime what it is today Also same creator who did Urusei Yatsura also did Ranma 1/2 and Inuyasha If you want to watch Urusei Yatsura, there is a modern remake currently ongoing (I think you already reacted to that version's openings) Speaking of which, I'd like to see you react to the openings of the original version. There are technically 8 openings, 6 for the TV show, and 2 for the OVA (episodes that were released straight to home video) Dr. Slump was by the same creator as Dragon Ball. May he rest in peace. YuYu Hakusho is actually by the same creator as Hunter X Hunter also, the creator of Hunter X Hunter and YuYu Hakusho is married to the creator of Sailor Moon The Pokemon opening you are referring to is the US opening Before the 2010s, it was a common practice for the USA to make their own openings when importing anime. Same with other countries like Germany or Mexico, Brazil. There is a whole rabbit hole of international anime openings. And yes, you should totally react to the 90s Hunter X Hunter openings. Unlike the remake, they are actually different songs.
I was very lucky when I was a kid because the TV in my country back then was bringing anime series both from the USA and directly from Japan. My childhood and early teens were full of anime ❤️ From all these, I have watched the full series of Princess Knight, Heidi, Space Battleship Yamato, Space Pirate Captain Harlock, DragonBall and DragonBall Z (as well as Super), Ranma 1/2, Sailor Moon (all seasons), Detective Conan (still watching and reading it since it's ongoing 😅), Rurōni Kenshin, CardCaptor Sakura, Digimon Adventure (all three seasons plus Digimon Tamers), OnePiece (still watching and reading ❤), InuYasha, The melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, Death Note, Clannad, Toradora. To be honest, I binge watched Naruto (and Shippuden) and FullMetal Alchemist (and Brotherhood) around a decade ago. I wasn't able to catch them when they had first started airing 😕 From these I have only watched some episodes of: Astro Boy, Kimba the white lion, Gatchaman, Mazinger Z, Candy Candy, Dr Slump, Fist of the North Star, Yū Yū Hakusho, Slam Dunk, Pokémon, Berserk, Yu Gi Oh, Bleach (currently watching 😅), Soul Eater, Attack on Titan. Thanks for this small walk down memory lane 🙏
The English version has its version in each language it must be believed that the original version has less than 😂 In France there is a version of heidi, saint seiya, captain tsubasa and others thanks to a show named "the club Dorothée" which made France discover the anime , manga and Japan
Urusei Yatsura is a classic romcom made by the same mangaka who created Ranma 1/2 and Inu Yasha. For me it's good and worth a watch but it's not to everyone's taste. And you probably already know this Luke but Pokemon was created in Japan so it stands to reason that the anime has Japanese openings. The English themes are only for the English dub by 4KIDs along with the ridiculous levels of censorship and Americanization of this and every anime they licensed
I do absolutely enjoy these. A few words on a bunch of these: Kimba the White Lion is actually what Lion King was hugely inspired by. It's basically the same story, really. Ge Ge Ge no Kitaro is a show featuring Yokai, basically spirits and monsters from Japanese folklore. It also had a recent revival. Attack No 1 I actually haver seen. One of only two sports anime I ever watched, cause the German dub was on TV back when I was a kid. Heidi also was on TV here in German dub back in a day. It's a classic story about a Girl called Heidi living in the Swiss alps with her Grandpa. Dr. Slump giving you Dragon Ball vibes is correct, it's by the same author. The late great Akira Toriyama. Nadia: The Secret off Blue Water, and Sailor Moon as well also were on TV in German dub here in the 90s. Oh man, Shin-chan. I also watched that in dub back then on TV. Such an absolutely weird show. YES CONAN! I love that show so much! This has been on the Anime opening vote for the last 5 times for sure. Just always gets second place. The Pokemon Opening you heard was the Japanese first opening. The English one you quoted got used in almost every international dub. YuGiOh is probably the only Anime where I absolutely prefer the international dub opening to the JP openings. Oh man, Love Hina! That show is hilarious. One of the first binge watches I did on a recommendation from a friend INUYASHA! Another one I love. I so wish you could watch that show. Same for Ranma 1/2 that was in this earlier on. Both by the same author as Urusei Yatsura. Rumiko Takahashi. I love her stuff. Clannad definitely needs to be a stream series at some point. We want to see you cry. :) man, that was a trip down nostalgia road.
Saint Seiya all openings and endings, Inuyasha all openings and endings, Hunter x Hunter (1999) all openings and endings - and the first episode - (after you finish the next arc in 2011 version), these would be a good content for you and I guess the community would enjoy as well.
I wish Revolutionary Girl Utena was here... Luke, you should watch that one because all the episodes are available to watch for free right here on youtube. I at least want to recommend a reaction to the full opening song, and the endings.
@@悠々彼方S Revolutionary Girl Utena definitely runs on fictional logic... it only makes sense within the fantasy world of Ohtori Academy. I always just accepted that the duels were more about the symbolism than the reality.
there was actually a ton of influence back and forth between western animation and Japanese animation back in the day. in particular, a lot of the really really early anime stuff bears a huge resemblance to early disney, as well as early cartoons in general, in like the early mickey mouse/tom and jerry/betty boop/loony toons type era. Japanese animation has always had its own distinct stylistic leanings, which led to such a heavy branch off into the type of styles we see in anime today, which aren't common in the west unless western animators are trying to evoke that style in particular. but back in the day, everything flowed a lot more freely in terms of style and influence. also, others have already pointed out that Dr. Slump is done by Akira Toriyama aka the guy who did Dragon Ball, but also... Yu Yu Hakusho is done by Yoshihiro Togashi, aka the guy who did Hunter x Hunter! oh, and about Cardcaptor Sakura... that one is by CLAMP, which is a group of women who all create manga together under that pen name. they're responsible for a ton of really iconic titles... Cardcaptor Sakura is one of theirs, but it's on the more child friendly end. it's very episodic, very slice-of-life, and I think probably the best thing about it is how calm and atmospheric it is. like, it almost kind of makes you feel nostalgic for a place you've never been. it's a good one to wind down with, but you have to kind of want to do that, otherwise it's probably not going to appeal that much. but not all of CLAMP's work is like this. they have a huge range... Magic Knight Rayearth, Chobits, Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicles, xxxHolic, Angelic Layer... they're even (in part) responsible for Code Geass! they're kind of known for doing stylistically distinct and gorgeously designed manga that are, in my opinion, finicky to adapt to animation because of the hyper detailed aesthetic. (seriously, just look up "CLAMP manga pages" if you want a visual treat... I think Cardcaptor Sakura is more worth it as a manga for that alone.) and they're also known for doing stories that delve into heavy drama, and range from sweet but melancholic, to downright tragic in some of their darker works. also, I'm mildly grumpy that this video skipped Revolutionary Girl Utena again! that opening is so iconic, and the series is so well done... it still has so much relevance, like, you'll see whole channels devoted to making hours-long youtube essays about this show, even currently right now, because the subject matter it tackled was so ahead of its time. I just really can't praise it enough. idk if Utena technically qualifies as a magical girl or not (the show is a very unconventional representative of the genre if it does count) but if she counts, this could be the magical girl show for you. it's definitely steeped in enough metaphor and symbolism to be infinitely interesting. (mentioning those last two Golden Kamuy endings that we haven't done yet, just to keep that request current)
I'd love to see you watch Yu Yu Hakusho! It's by the same mangaka as Hunter x Hunter, Yoshihiro Togashi, and it's also incredible, very fun, full of action, great characters and character moments/developments edit: Oh, also the english dub for it is iconic and very well done! So it's one of those series where sub or dub both have their merits
Anime of the mid 1980s, 1990s, and early 2000s had so much style. I might be biased as an older anime fan, but I really miss the charm of anime from that era.
history/progression of female anime characters (though the video is 13 years old, so that means that it only covers up to ~ 2011), really really well done amv video of female anime characters (there's so many of them, every-time catch a new frame of them, laughs): ruclips.net/video/WsXay2GMF-g/видео.html (anime girl empire) younger/newer generations of anime fans probably won't know most of them (character and anime), sadly... this really tests your fandom, in how many you know (and can spot/see/notice, lol, as its rapid fire frames, unless you "cheat" and constantly pause and/or slow down the video play rate, lol), grins
@@Jordan-Ramses Never said current anime isn't awesome. Just doesn't have this certain charm from those eras. There is a certain feel anime from that era had that feels missing, maybe the lack of of using Cel animation or just the popular styles/humor of the time. For example there is a remake of Rurouni Kenshin recently... But it lacks all the charm and feels like a pretty disappointing adaptation even though on paper it is adapting a 90s manga properly and looks cleaner.
One of these you've actually heard before! The 1975 opening to "A Dog of Flanders" is Subaru's ringtone in Re:Zero. You can hear it ringing out when the alarm announces the arrival of the white whale.
Born in 94 and started to watch Anime with Dragon Ball in 2001. I only got to see bits and pieces of the story over the years until 2005 when Naruto releashed in english and that totally kick started this all for me. Since then I haven't stopped watching Anime. Crazy to think how young I was but it tracks because I remember seeing the first arc of dragon ball on TV and obviously was old enough to remember Naruto.
Of cause we want you to watch Clannad. Its one of the best Drama anime of all time. Even if it will crush your soul watching it you will somehow also feel that you have learned something in the course. Also there will be ppl watching it together with you and even going through this again :)
I'm actually rewatching Sailor Moon and it's crazy how even 30+ years after the anime release it's so modern in some way I can't explain how, it feels like a transcending generations masterpiece.
After you mentioned an evolution of anime video at the end of the most popular anime openings video, I actually went and saw this one and thought about going back and mentioning it, but didn't. The 60s/70s stuff I didn't really watch, but there are a lot of the older shows that I had at least heard of. (Including Astro Boy.) I think there was a lot of mech anime in the 70s/80s because it was the era of making TV shows in order to sell toys, or in the case of Macross and probably Gundam, collectable figures/model kits. Overall, this video features more of the anime that I've heard about in the US, so a lot of stuff I've heard of or may know things about them even if I haven't watched them. Mazinger Z however I saw on TV as Tranzor Z as a kid, and they had an entirely different opening for it in the US. Same with Goshogun/Macron 1. Also, I just recently found out there is an anime called: Attack on Titan: Junior High. Lastly a little note: You reacted to the opening song for Cowboy Bebop, you didn't actually watch the opening video, so you've only seen little bits of it in videos like these as far as I know. :)
here in Italy shows like Lupin III, Urusei Yatsura, Mazinger Z, Heidi, etc. are really beloved to this day because these are what my parents' generation grew up watching
That was the classic japanese sports uniform for girls for several decades in japan. Some say it has its advantages regarding movement. I am not much into sport myself, so I could not confirm if that has any kind of advantage. The only other thing I know is that the classic japanese school swimsuit for girls which also became its own meme is basically japans old design for their olympia swimsuits. It was japans high performance design back in the day until olympia committee decided to create unifying rules for this kinda stuff.
Truly shows how much things have changed over the years and decades. Each period has its gems and it is cuite clear how much music has evolved and become a more important part too. And even though there are absolutely great shows in past years. I do have to say that the late 80s to 2010 era was very special. There are so many great anime shows from that period. Really miss those ones. I highly recommend trying to watch more from that period of time if given the chance. The animation can feel old at times for some of them but that is not an issue at all. The pacing, visuals and stories / themes have their own charm. Oh and the focus on more action is definitely due to improved animation possibilities. But I also think that another reason is simply the shorter attention span of modern viewership. These days there needs to be that hook to keep people watching. So it's either action, shocking story moments, drama, intrigue etc. Older series were able to survive with a more slow and relaxed pace hence why talking, moments just showing the environment and slice of life themes were very common to be the focus or at least fill out a series at times from the key moments. PS: At 14:00, the "Ruroni Kenshin" is a good old samurai themed anime from the 90s originally. It has the normal anime season content but also movies and OVA's (mini series / movie length) releases. Alternative name for the series / some of the releases is "Samurai X". OVA "Trust & Betrayal" ** A really good experience that I highly recommend. ** Tells the origin of the main character. ** Brutal and has blood so be warned but has one of the most memorable anime stories (for me at least) ever since I saw them in the early 2000s on vhs. The anime series ** More tame and focuses on not killing (interesting concept for a samurai series) ** Happens after the "The Motion Picture" and "Trust & Betrayal" stories even though the series was released earlier. "The Motion Picture" ** Extra movie with characters from the series. The OVA "Reflection" ** Ending for the story after the anime series. Recent 2023 anime series ** A retelling of the anime series story. ** What I understand is that this is more accurate to the original manga. But I was not able to watch it after a few episodes as the original anime is my canon version for the series.
I not sure if you read this but you should do a video or videos to Eureka 7(4seasons), Eureka 7 AO(2 seasons), the OP and Eds are good including long versions. This show has so many movies and canons to it. Its more popular than underrated, everyone knows this show but forget to mention it. Lisa did a concert with Flow using one of these songs also.
This is a great video with a great selection of shows. Only downside is some of the years they skipped. I’m not sure its correct to say that older anime are less “dark.” Japanese animation has always had a tendency to address a wider range of themes and darker subject matter than western animation. Some of those old mech and general sci-fi shows were ridiculously violent. However, it is definitely true that “battle shonen” fighting shows starting with Dragonball became the most popular genre and people may have become more comfortable over time with more violence and fights in the openings themselves. I definitely want you to react to the English openings of stuff like Dragonball Z and Pokemon. 4:40 you are correct in the 60s and 70s Japanese animation was inspired heavily by American shows especially Disney's. Astro Boy is generally credited with being the first show to have the distinctive "anime" style but it took time for that style to become more standard at home let alone to take a big global market share of entertainment. However, the copying went both ways, as Disney took a lot from Kimba the White Lion when they made Lion King. In Japan though anime just means "animation" so foreign shows like the Simpsons or Disney moves would also be called "anime" in Japan even though us foreigners find that strange. 8:35 “Dragonball animation” well good recognition Dr. Slump was the first successful series by Akira Toriyama the creator of Dragonball. The oldest of these I have personally watched a full episode of was “Space Battleship Yamato” (1974). The oldest I have watched a full season of is the original Gundam(1979). The first I recognize watching as a child in 90’s was Dragonball Z(1989) because the original Dragonball was as far as I know never broadcast on the channels I had access to. On music its interesting the 80's and before music feels old/classical to me, its fine but there are few I'd put on a playlist. The 90's music is a bit hit or miss but I definately appreciate many of them. Starting in 2000 though I'm putting almost every single song in the video on a playlist regardless of whether I like the show or not. Its hard to tell how much of that is anything objective and how much is just the age I grew up influencing me.
You comment is great except for the kimba the white lion juss see the yms video of kimba I’m have better samples of Americans cartoon som tuck inspiration of anime so example, frankenstein jr it was inspired bye gigantor and Batman the animated series is this watch super inspired by anime so Akira (1988) and the teen Titan cartoon and may more
I watched a ton of Space Battleship Yamato. Or actually the American version which was called Star Blazers. It was on local TV from about when I was 5 to 10 years old. It was huge with all the kids my age I knew. There were two seasons dubbed into English.
If you want I would recommend checking out the Precure openings the series is a magical girl show, yes it's more for a younger audience but it's really good I enjoy all of the openings upto the recent on that is airing at the moment
Cutie Honey is very cultured, lots of amazing costumes as well, and when "Honey Flash" is used both in the chorus of the opening and as the vocal cue for the magical costume changes, you know it's gotta be good.
! WARNING: BIG ASS COMMENT EXPLAINING ALL OF ANIME ! Anime started as a byproduct of World War 2 with Tezuka making Astro Boy as coping mechanism for the suffering children after the war, it was supposed to be a japanese version of Disney cartoons, basically, anime was directed to children. Since it was made for children, the toys industry used it to push their products, more specificallly, the toy robot factories, and that's how the mecha genre was born. I'm not sure what caused the first change, i believe it was Gundam going for a more political approach to the mecha formula at the time. Some producers realized they could do more than toys propaganda, and decided to start experimenting with animating a variety of different stuff, interestingly, in the late 80s anime went from a kids toy medium to a hyper violent medium full of blood and sex, they also experimented with other stuff, but the violence is what sticked the most from that time, they were probably having fun with the dicotomy. In the early 90s things got a lot more varied, there were anime about everything, the producers experimented with a lot of extremes, some of it sticked, some of it was forgotten. Dragon Ball came out and it started the shonen genre, but there was still some uncertainty as to what anime should be. And then, it happened, some mad lad named Hideaki Anno made a little show called Evangelion. It's difficult to explain just how big Eva was, it pretty much separated anime into the pre-Eva era and the post-Eva era, There is too much complexity and meta shit to understanding how and why Eva did what it did, but basically, it took everything the anime industry was experimenting with and made it into a more consise form. This marks the sad end of experimentation, however, it's the start of the golden age of anime. All of the best and more popular anime of all time came from the post-Eva era, the big 3, Pokemon and all the good stuff came out here, i think it lasted from 1995 to 2012, but some might disagree. (This is where some of the weird hate for SAO comes from, people say that SAO marked the end of the golden age, but i dont think so. Here's what i believe: anime started as a medium for selling toys based on fre*king Disney of all things, it's basically capitalism incarnate, it's just natural that it would go back to being about selling products eventually, you cant just live of art alone, and oh boy, Japan would know.) Honestly, i think anime has started getting a lot better lately, we still have remnants from that time, like the endless influx of bad isekais that seems to just get bigger every season, and the industry now behaving very safely and not really trying to experiment with new things, which is understandable, anime has gone mainstream and there is A LOT of money invested in it, cant really be reckless anymore. I'm personally enjoying anime currently, but i admit it feels a bit stagnant, there are passionate people working, but the industry dont really give them the opportunity to do what they want, and the ones that kinda do, do it with the prospect of making more money and not really caring for their work ethics (cough, cough Mappa...) It would be nice if someone could shake the industry and start a new period of things being made for the sake of art, we need a new Evangelion. Sorry, i sperged out a little... I know i glanced over a lot of things, but there is too much. Tell me if you disagree with something.
This was a cool look back at some classic anime openings. There were definitely a few I expected to see like GTO that weren't there, but there isn't really a way to include everything that deserves it. I would love to see you do more endings reactions. I know you have said that endings don't get as many views as openings, but you have quite a few endings reactions that have done quite well. For instance, chainsaw man has 168k views, Overlord 221k, Re:Zero 74k, Hunter X Hunter 80k to name just a few. Fairy tail even has 30k views, which isn't a ton, but compared to a lot of openings reactions its not that bad.
10:37 This song might sound familiar if you've seen that "when you're overqualified" video of Nyango Star absolutely destroying a drum set! The song being played at this event is the Anpanman theme song!
Luke, the most attractive thing why I subscribed to your YT and Patreon is because you really care about what you see on the screen, starting from AOT I was impressed by how you highlighted some things that I noticed only on the 2nd try. So no need to explain that you are not about hype views :)
I love how animation and music changed over the years. Out of the animes in this video you should definitely react to Inuyasha openings and rurouni kenshin openings. Two classics you're missing out. Hope people recommend them more 💜
12:42 Ah Yu Yu Hakusho and Slam Dunk back to back! Both are awesome shows, I can confidently recommend watching Yu Yu Hakusho in English. The casting is AMAZING.
There was a version of Dog of Flanders (The Dog of Flanders??) that was an ad on the VHS i had of the first Sailor Moon movie, still have never watched Dog of Flanders considering i replayed that VHS so often
The biggest problem with the 90's Berserk adaptation is that it's basically just the backstory for the manga, it sets up the core storyline of the manga, and then stops at a massive cliffhanger and never continued. The CG followup attempts are all best left forgotten... I would say, check out the 90s Show, and it seems like it's up your alley, try the manga as well.
15:58 - YES!! And TBH I recommend watching it. It does drag a little but it covers more of the early story in detail where the 2011 remake glossed over certain things and tried to tone down the dark elements. And there's some super kickass openings. The one for the Spiders arc is my absolute favourite!
I love how they included Love Hina because that was one of the original Harem anime/manga and was what popularized it as well as what helped make Ken Akamatsu such a popular and famous manga artist. Plus it lead to him making Negima which was amazing (the manga not the anime adaptation…sadly) which was the battle Shonen Ken Akamatsu wanted to make while also being a harem series.
I started with Mazinger Z with the infamous boob rockets and Gacchaman (AKA Battle of the Planets) which where both on UK TV when I was young. A lot of the 70s-90s stuff could only be imported so I only started watching a lot of Anime once I had a job and DVDs existed for cheaper imports. Watching anime is so much easier and cheaper nowadays, One Piece / Naruto / etc where so expensive over time.
Here are my 5 + 2 classic recommendations for your next OP & ED reactions: 1. (2004) Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha OP & ED (with 5 series, 4 movies and 2 games; OPs & some movie EDs sung by that era's anisong queen: Mizuki Nana) 2. (2005) Shakugan no Shana OP & ED (since u have watched Toaru OPs, they have some some similar singers) 3. (2000) Vandread OP & ED (fire retro 90s/00s songs)(check out the EDs for cheekiness) 4. (2011) Horizon in the middle of Nowhere OP & ED 5. (2018) Yuru Camp OP & ED 6. (2003) Chrono Crusade OP & ED Special mention: (2008) Macross Frontier ED & insert (esp the EDs like "Diamond Crevasse" & "Northern Cross" are a MUST! and their longer forms!, Ao no Ether, Yousei) classic 1. (2000) Inuyasha OP & ED 2. (1996) Rurouni Kenshin (the 1996 series) OP & ED
I'm surprised you didn't know Yuu Yuu Hakusho as someone who is a big fan of Hunter X Hunter, they are written by the same author. You should check it out. Another in there, Rurouni Kenshin, is one that must have been overlooked so far, this anime was everywhere at the time.
Generally, anime got much darker on TV when they started airing late nights (Evangelion sorta was the breaking point - it was so controversial in its mainstream timeslot that many anime switched to late nights) 🤔 Direct-to-video OVAs/OAVs are a different matter since they don't have to follow broadcast standards 🤣
Seriously, still on the endings? I checked, and the Fairy Tail endings video you did (that you reference here) got 30k views. Then I checked your video list. Of your last 100 videos (not counting the ones released today), 10 of them got more than 30k views. So it's still in your top 10% videos. How is this "nobody watches this"? And there's the usual addendum that most people that complain about a lack of endings generally expect you do to endings together with the openings (assuming you're not doing a series with dozens of openings/endings), not require an entirely separate vote to get them shown. It's hard enough to get _anything_ through a popularity vote. To get it through _twice?_
Honestly I didn't even know it had that many views, I go by what the community says most of the time and don't usually check back. But both Yu-Gi-Oh and Fairy Tail will have part 2s

When I watch the 'Astro Boy Atom' TV series and movies, it feels like Walt Disney Studios. So, if a new remake "Astro Boy Atom" movies and TV series are released in the long-term future, we hope "Astro Boy Atom" movies and TV series should/will be produced by Walt Disney Animation Studio. I would even like a lot of cameo characters (+ humans&robots) (in the new (different) ancestor universe) from other Walt Disney studio movies to be featured in this TV series and movies. For example, there are ...... - Walt Disney Animation Studios - Rapunzel, Eugene Fitzherbert, Cassandra, Varian, etc. (from Tangled Series), Ralph (as a tall-grown ordinary human), Vanellope (as a tall-grown human), etc. (from Wreck-It-Ralph Series), Elsa, Anna, Kristoff, Sven, Olaf( as a snow robot)(, Hans, Oaken, Kai, Mattias, Northuldra), etc. (from Frozen Series), Hiro Hamada, Tadashi Hamada, Baymax, Honey Lemon, Go Go Tomago, Wasabi, Fred, Aunt Cass, Alistair Krei, Yokai, Mr. Yama, etc. (from Big Hero 6 Series), Moana, Maui(, Tala, Tui, Sina), etc. (from Moana Series), Asha, etc. (from Wish Series), Mirabel Madrigal, "Abuela" Alma Madrigal, Bruno Madrigal, Félix Madrigal, Luisa Madrigal, Julieta Madrigal, Pepa Madrigal, Isabela Madrigal, Agustín Madrigal, etc. (from Ecanto Series), Raya, etc. (From Raya and the Last Dragon Series), Ethan Clade, Searcher Clade, Jaeger Clade, Diazo, Penelope Clade, (from Strange World Series), Lewis Robinson, Franny Robinson, Wilbur Robinson, Lewis' Mother, Bud Robinson, Tallulah Robinson, DOR-15, etc. (from Meet the Robinsons Series), Bolt as a pet dog, Mittens as a pet cat, Penny, Rhino as a pet hamster, Penny's Mother, (from Bolt Series), etc. - Pixar Animation Studios - Merida, etc. (from Brave Series), Buzz Lightyear as a human, Woody as a human, Jessie as a human, Bo Peep as a human, Andy Davis, Bonnie Anderson, Izzy Hawthorne, etc. (from Toy Story+Lightyear Series), Bob Parr (Mr. Incredible), Helen Parr (Elastigirl), Violet Parr, Dash Parr, Jack-Jack Parr, Frozone, Edna Mode, Rick Dicker, Snug, Winston Deavor, etc. (from Incredibles Series), Miguel(, Héctor, Ernesto de la Cruz, Mamá Imelda, Abuelita, Mamá Coco, Chicharrón, Papá Julio, Tía Rosita, Tía Victoria, Tíos Oscar and Felipe, Papá), etc. (from Coco Series), Luca Paguro, Alberto Scorfano, Giulia Marcovaldo, Ercole Visconti, Massimo Marcovaldo, Mrs. Marsigliese, etc. (from Luca Series), Meilin "Mei" Lee, Ming Lee, Miriam Mendelsohn, Priya Mangal, Abby Park, Jin Lee, Tyler Nguyen-Baker, Mr. Gao, Devon, Mr. Kieslowski, Stacy Frick, Lauren, etc. (from Turning Red Series) etc. ...... Of course, the background of this TV series and movies is mainly Metro City.
Hi bro I love your channel and videos I binged watch a ton of your videos all the time. I was born in 1990 This is my top anime. 1.- ( 1983 Captain Tsubasa ) 2.- ( 1986 Saint Seiya ) 3.- ( 1986 - 1989 Dragon Ball DBZ) 4.- ( 1997 Pokemon ) 4.- ( 1998 Cardcaptor Sakura ) 5.- ( 2000 Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters) 6.- ( 2000 Love Hina ) 7.- ( 2002 2007 Naruto Naruto Shippuden) 8.- ( 2004 Bleach ) 9.- ( 2006 Death Note ) 10.- ( 2019 Kimetsu No Yaiba) 11.- ( 2016 My Hero Academia ) 12.- ( 1999 One Piece) 13.- ( 2020 Jujutsu Káisen ) 14.- ( 2013 Attack on Titan ) 15.- ( 2014 Tokyo Ghoul ) 16.- ( 2015 One Punch Man ) And so much more man this is peak anime in my taste best of wishes
I know I'm getting old when I realize I started watching animes with Kimba and Princess Knight (not the years they were originally released, but when they were broadcasted in France, roughly 1977-78 when I was 5 or 6)... I'm turning 52 and still enjoy anime like the first day 🙂
I'm 57 years old this year and I've watched a lot of anime since I was a little kid. Gundam was first aired when I was in the first grade of junior high school. There used to be a lot of sad endings, and sometimes they started with a tragedy. The most shocking one was Ideon. I didn't think they would all die 😅 My father, who would be 90 years old if he were still alive, loved Galaxy Express 999 and I remember watching it with him in elementary school. I also saw some of his works like Heidi and Anne of Green Gables. I think some of them were set in England. Let's see, "Little Prince Sadie". And I think we also saw Lassie. There were quite a few stories set in foreign countries in the 80s. The Tale of Cuore (Italy), The Little Princess (France), Rascal (Australia), Nils (Sweden), Marco (Argentina), Tom Sawyer (USA), Anne of Green Gables (Canada), Remi the Lonely Child (France), A Dog of Flanders (Belgium), and many more.
The big difference between old anime openings and today's is that the songs back then, mostly made for the show, unlike today, songs were chosen from someone spotify playlists,
Urusei Yatsura is an interesting anime because one of the dubs it received was actually a Gag dub which was broadcast through the BBC in the year 2000 and was renamed to "Lum the Invader Girl" it's also most notable for being recorded in the UK and featuring Matt Lucas as the main character, Ataru.
You really need to check out the openings for more Gundam shows and Detective Conan. There were always the dark anime and Gundam is one of the show that revolutionized mecha, inspiring very directly Code Geass, 86 and a lot of other mecha shows. You will be seriously surprised how dark they are and I feel you might like them a lot. And Detective Conan has an episodic formula so it wouldn't be for anyone, but if you like short criminal mystery stories, you will love it. Otherwise the series itself might not be for you, but a lot of the openings slap so I highly recommend checking them out!
There's is also a lot of anime whose openings gets changed in the dub for a 30 seconds theme instead of using the actual Japanese ones. That is for the sole reason of commercial breaks. There has been a few times where these dub openings cuts a lot from the original, and then add something else into it. One example is the Pokemon franchise.
OMG !!!! I remember watching the show with the baby white lion, but I forgot the name. I didn’t even know it was an anime… I guess this is the first anime I watched then lmao.
I started to watch anime and read manga in 91. Thnx to living close to japan. 90-2010 was truly golden era of anime, not bc of graphics, but bc of experementation. Evangelion showed everyone, that anime can be serious and dark. That anime can be for every age group. So 90-2010 was era of experiments. 2010 - present - money machine.
1972 - MAZINGER Z - The oldest anime I had watched 1974 - HEIDI - The oldest I kind of remember 1976 - Candy Candy - I remember this even less than Heidi 1979 - Mobile Suit Gundam - Not sure about this, maybe I'm mixing my memories with another gundam 1983 - Captain Tsubasa - The one I truly remember. Supercampeones in México 1986 - Dragon Ball/Saint Seiya - now, this is it 1989 - Ranma/Dragon Ball Z - With this anime I started to understand that the whole thing was different from western animation I started watching anime in the 90's before even knowing other countries existed. I truly started watching in the 2000's, and ever since I have watched some of the oldest one while trying to keep up with interesting ones. Now I only watch like 3 or 4 every season.
cutey honey was wayy before its time. Very cultured. :3 Heidi of the alps was the first anime song that I remember by heart and tune. But I watch it on it's second or third re-run when I was a kid. Oh, go watch Clannad. :3

history/progression of female anime characters (though the video is 13 years old, so that means that it only covers up to ~ 2011), really really well done amv video of female anime characters (there's so many of them, every-time catch a new frame of them, laughs):
ruclips.net/video/WsXay2GMF-g/видео.html (anime girl empire)
younger/newer generations of anime fans probably won't know most of them (character and anime), sadly... this really tests your fandom, in how many you know (and can spot/see/notice, lol, as its rapid fire frames, unless you "cheat" and constantly pause and/or slow down the video play rate, lol), grins
Luke, that's not a random ringtone, its the NOKIA ringtone!~
you could try Magical Girl Raising Project , its basically magical girls meets a battle royal
If you're gonna watch Full Metal Alchemist brotherhood OP. Please watch the live concert.
I think Doraemon is more like Felix the cat. Felix had a magic bag and Doraemon had a magic pokect.
doraemon is more like rick and morty but pg
To the other replies: I think they meant cultural impact in japan
The thing i love about Doraemon is that it actually has an ending and the ending is actually good just like the show and the movies are fire
Oh that makes sense! 💯
Fun fact! Sazae-san is *STILL* running! Not re-runs either, they're still making new episodes! In fact, it holds the Guinness World Record for the longest-running animated television series at over 2,640 episodes! It was also one of the last anime to switch from cel animation to digital!
Oh damn 🤯
I think it must be longest runing tv thing and second longest running peace of any media because there is a music which older and writing to this day. If I remember correctly
gege kitarou and detective conan too
Also other anime like One Piece and Pokemon.
Jeez really? 🤯

It's nit the only anime who has this many episodes. One Piece and Pokemon are also long running series.
Yu yu hakusho was created by the same author that created hunter x hunter
Disney was looking at Japanese animation and thought: "Wooow. That's good. I will take that."
Disney didn’t rip it off watch the video on it by yms
@@danielgwynne7266😂😂😂😂
Yeah, Disney fans never learn.
Disney not only stole the idea of Kimba the white Lion, they stole the story boards in the begining of the movie from the manga. And Disney stole the african music in the movie too.
But fot rich corporations isn't steal, is "inspiration" or "tribute".

Oh might have to check more of it out 👀
@@GOTGames It has a lot of silly jokes and I'm sure you'll have fun watching it! not sure where you can watch it though..
You're way too young Luke, but Gatchaman was screened in the UK as a heavily edited US version called "Battle of the Planets"! (Essential viewing when I was growing up, though a 'Monster/Battle of the week' show.)
A few other points - Future Boy Conan was an early project involving the great Hayao Miyazaki; and the original Macross is actually a pretty good show that actually delves into some dark corners (but especially if you can find the full original version, not the 'Robotech' dubbed version - with respectful apologies to those who preferred the latter!)
Oh, and these days it looks heavily dated, but Princess Knight really kicked off the trend for strong female leads.
But when it comes to anime openings you can't beat the SAO music...
Here in Brazil we got Astro Boy, Princess Knight, Speed Racer, Kimba the White Lion and some other classic stuff in the 80s.
How its Lion King is similar to Kimba? Have you even watched it. Besides the name there are almost no similarities.
Haw no one see the yms video of kimba the white Leon is not simuler att all
@@dadandadandanstory of a lion cub named kimba (in english) that saw his father get murdered and then grow up to be the king of the jungle/forest/savanna. kimba ends up lost in a faraway land, after that he sees his parent's face in the sky, (just like in disney) really no similarities ? finds friends/ people that take care of him. to later go back to his land and rule it as the king. i mean yeah they didn't copy the entire plot there's no humans in the disney. but it's pretty clear that they took heavy inspiration.

interesting to see the old osomatsu-kun opening (so there was a series in 1966, then an alternative version in 1988, and the alternative version called osomatsu-san in 2015...)
gegege kitaro is also an old one. had a run in 1969, 1971, 1985, 1996, and 2018. newest addition to this franchise is the Birth of Kitaro movie from 2023.
You forgot the 2007 and kitaro haw mus mor den one movie it haw 15 movie but most of dem is short movies
I’ve been recommended Luke the 2018 anime endings for a while. Absolutely love Gegege no Kitaro and it’s youkai lore

Kamen Rider (1971) is really awesome
Saint Seiya is one of the animes that were pioneers in bringing anime from Japan to the world at a time when it was very difficult to see anime on TV and became popular, which encouraged Japan to release more anime to the rest of the world, just like Dragon Ball and Sailor Moon, if you watch anime today, be grateful to these animes that were part of the golden age of anime Yu Yu Hakusho, Ruroni Kenshin, Inuyasha are other animes that show their difference when released, which to this day few animes have managed to replicate
Man so glad I grew up when I did. I got Yu Yu Hakusho, Rurouni Kenshin, Inuyasha, the original FullMetal, Wolf's Rain, Cowboy Bebop, it was great.
It gets recommended a lot! One I'll have to check out more from 💯
26:50 May look like that because of the openings, Luke, but actually some were MUCH darker and violent even though they were tagged as being for a younger audience. *Basically what I'm trying to say is, action anime in the 80s and 90s had an amount of violence that was chill for us at the time, but would likely shock people nowadays.*
*In fact, I would say JJK is the closest thing to Yu Yu Hakusho's level and style of violence I've seen in recent years. But that's just my opinion.*
No way you don’t know Heidi 😭 Don’t get banished now Luke
6:50 Fun fact you might recognize this as Subarus ring tone in Re:Zero. Another fun fact the dog in a dog of Flanders is called Patrasche as well this is where Re:Zero’s writer got the inspiration from and the staff at white fox went looking for old flip phones to turn it into a ringtone to make that connection
About the development of animation in general, like with everything in the world it hugely benefited from digitalization, though studios still do a mix of digital and hand drawn animation especially veterans sticking to the roots. Stuff like 3D / CGI also caused a huge leap (when used properly). For example Mappa has a whole CGI branch and Ufotable who did Fate Stay Night ULBW and Demon Slayer perfected their Blending of 2D characters with 3D backgrounds and elements. In general the anime industry is spread much more thin now though, due to low pay (they get cuts for frames of animation not a set amount of money for working hours) and the popularity of it with, more and more companies trying to just pump out as many anime as they can, completely disregarding the human aspect of the staff at the studios they contract to do the actual work
That’s why even when you’re joking about wanting a series sooner than it’s supposed to air, I’m always saying just let them cook bc even with the time they have animation is actual hard work.
At least hes british so he slightly gets away with not knowing Heidi
Now if he was german? Throw him off the alps.

Agree. YYH is fucking awesome and IMO, way better than Hunter X Hunter.
@@KegOfMeat Agreed. Though, won't deny it has a bit of a slow start to get going. But, other than that...
Cardaptor Sakura is a slow-paced episodic show with 70 episodes, you aren't supposed to get hooked immediately but enjoy the experience as you watch
As with all anime I check out, I would happily watch the entire thing and make my mind up at the end 💯💯

Slayers is a pioneer of Japanese fantasy anime.
Until then, it was said that fantasy anime was not popular, but that jinx has been dispelled.
It's just that the hype has died down because the 2nd season still hasn't come out 10 years later.
it is very true!. i like to add more of that i think most of us ( old anime fan) is not watching anime regularly anymore.
Im still remember shield hero from very good at s1 to thrash s2. 😅
if you ask anyone who watched anime back 10 yrs ago if they know about NGNL they would answer yes, idk about this days anime watchers tho
Oh I didn't know, I'm surprised they didn't make another season then? Maybe one day? ✊
New cutie houey is not rom the 80s it is 1994
kinda like hiei in yu yu hakusho, lol. he was originally supposed to be generic bad demon that was only there to help kurama steal the mirror in the beginning of the series, but fans liked him so much togashi brought him back.
Hey Luke, at 6:43 (1975) 'A Dog of Flanders', did you notice the tune of the song is the same tune Subaru from Rezero used as his cellphone ring tone?

“Magical girl anime haven’t sat right with me recently “
Looks at culture, remembers a magical anime
Yeah I gave the video a dislike for that line, alone.
The most notable ones I could pick out were:
YuYu Hakusho - First off, one of the best anime openings of all time even today.
This isn't a hidden gem at all but I'm still calling it out lmao
The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya - This one is what inspired me to start writing this comment.
I actually watched and really enjoyed the 1960s Gegege no Kitaro, as well as its more modern remakes, there's been a new version each decade
And yeah, I think you should react to the openings of Cutie Honey.
There was also basically a new version almost every decade.
Not joking, but the manga and its creator, Go Nagai (who also created Mazinger Z and Devilman) started a minor sexual revolution in Japan.
And Urusei Yatsura basically finished what Cutie Honey started, pretty much making anime what it is today
Also same creator who did Urusei Yatsura also did Ranma 1/2 and Inuyasha
If you want to watch Urusei Yatsura, there is a modern remake currently ongoing (I think you already reacted to that version's openings)
Speaking of which, I'd like to see you react to the openings of the original version.
There are technically 8 openings, 6 for the TV show, and 2 for the OVA (episodes that were released straight to home video)
Dr. Slump was by the same creator as Dragon Ball. May he rest in peace.
YuYu Hakusho is actually by the same creator as Hunter X Hunter
also, the creator of Hunter X Hunter and YuYu Hakusho is married to the creator of Sailor Moon
The Pokemon opening you are referring to is the US opening
Before the 2010s, it was a common practice for the USA to make their own openings when importing anime.
My childhood and early teens were full of anime ❤️
From all these, I have watched the full series of Princess Knight, Heidi, Space Battleship Yamato, Space Pirate Captain Harlock, DragonBall and DragonBall Z (as well as Super), Ranma 1/2, Sailor Moon (all seasons), Detective Conan (still watching and reading it since it's ongoing 😅), Rurōni Kenshin, CardCaptor Sakura, Digimon Adventure (all three seasons plus Digimon Tamers), OnePiece (still watching and reading ❤), InuYasha, The melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, Death Note, Clannad, Toradora.
To be honest, I binge watched Naruto (and Shippuden) and FullMetal Alchemist (and Brotherhood) around a decade ago. I wasn't able to catch them when they had first started airing 😕
From these I have only watched some episodes of: Astro Boy, Kimba the white lion, Gatchaman, Mazinger Z, Candy Candy, Dr Slump, Fist of the North Star, Yū Yū Hakusho, Slam Dunk, Pokémon, Berserk, Yu Gi Oh, Bleach (currently watching 😅), Soul Eater, Attack on Titan.
Thanks for this small walk down memory lane 🙏
Anime songs used to be completely changed in English.
Usually the results were terrible, but Pokemon’s English theme was iconic.
The English version has its version in each language it must be believed that the original version has less than 😂
In France there is a version of heidi, saint seiya, captain tsubasa and others thanks to a show named "the club Dorothée" which made France discover the anime , manga and Japan
A few words on a bunch of these:
Kimba the White Lion is actually what Lion King was hugely inspired by.
One of the first binge watches I did on a recommendation from a friend
INUYASHA!
man, that was a trip down nostalgia road.
Yms kimba the white lion see it and see how different kimba and lion king is to it orders
I am Japanese, but as a story, that one made little sense to me. Why would they start dueling so abruptly? 😅 but I watched it frequently.
And also, Osamu Tezuka was nicknamed the Walt Disney of Japan.
@@KegOfMeat this is true!
I always love these types of videos with the evolution of anime
I'd love to see you watch Yu Yu Hakusho! It's by the same mangaka as Hunter x Hunter, Yoshihiro Togashi, and it's also incredible, very fun, full of action, great characters and character moments/developments
edit: Oh, also the english dub for it is iconic and very well done! So it's one of those series where sub or dub both have their merits
Anime of the mid 1980s, 1990s, and early 2000s had so much style. I might be biased as an older anime fan, but I really miss the charm of anime from that era.
history/progression of female anime characters (though the video is 13 years old, so that means that it only covers up to ~ 2011), really really well done amv video of female anime characters (there's so many of them, every-time catch a new frame of them, laughs):
ruclips.net/video/WsXay2GMF-g/видео.html (anime girl empire)
younger/newer generations of anime fans probably won't know most of them (character and anime), sadly... this really tests your fandom, in how many you know (and can spot/see/notice, lol, as its rapid fire frames, unless you "cheat" and constantly pause and/or slow down the video play rate, lol), grins
i found out a out after watching Gundam, initial d and sailor moon
its totaly different
Very biased. The current anime is awesome. But you can like old anime too.
But it lacks all the charm and feels like a pretty disappointing adaptation even though on paper it is adapting a 90s manga properly and looks cleaner.
i watched hxh 1999 man it so amazing , i like it more than the newer version
Anpanman is where saitama's one punch man design come from
Oh damn 🤯👀
After you mentioned an evolution of anime video at the end of the most popular anime openings video, I actually went and saw this one and thought about going back and mentioning it, but didn't. The 60s/70s stuff I didn't really watch, but there are a lot of the older shows that I had at least heard of. (Including Astro Boy.)
I think there was a lot of mech anime in the 70s/80s because it was the era of making TV shows in order to sell toys, or in the case of Macross and probably Gundam, collectable figures/model kits.
Same in France
I was shocked he didn't recognize it
The Promised Neverlands is a great anime. sadly only 1 season.
PS:
At 14:00, the "Ruroni Kenshin" is a good old samurai themed anime from the 90s originally. It has the normal anime season content but also movies and OVA's (mini series / movie length) releases. Alternative name for the series / some of the releases is "Samurai X".
OVA "Trust & Betrayal"
** A really good experience that I highly recommend.
** Tells the origin of the main character.
** Brutal and has blood so be warned but has one of the most memorable anime stories (for me at least) ever since I saw them in the early 2000s on vhs.
The anime series
** More tame and focuses on not killing (interesting concept for a samurai series)
** Happens after the "The Motion Picture" and "Trust & Betrayal" stories even though the series was released earlier.
"The Motion Picture"
** Extra movie with characters from the series.
The OVA "Reflection"
** Ending for the story after the anime series.
Recent 2023 anime series
** A retelling of the anime series story.
** What I understand is that this is more accurate to the original manga. But I was not able to watch it after a few episodes as the original anime is my canon version for the series.
I believe it was every Monday when Naruto, Bleach, and One piece were released with new chapters in Jump. I'm glad I was there at that time.
Anime started as a byproduct of World War 2 with Tezuka making Astro Boy as coping mechanism for the suffering children after the war,
it was supposed to be a japanese version of Disney cartoons, basically, anime was directed to children.
Since it was made for children, the toys industry used it to push their products, more specificallly, the toy robot factories,
and that's how the mecha genre was born.
I'm not sure what caused the first change, i believe it was Gundam going for a more political approach to the mecha formula at the time.
Some producers realized they could do more than toys propaganda, and decided to start experimenting with animating a variety of different stuff,
interestingly, in the late 80s anime went from a kids toy medium to a hyper violent medium full of blood and sex, they also experimented with other stuff,
but the violence is what sticked the most from that time, they were probably having fun with the dicotomy.
In the early 90s things got a lot more varied, there were anime about everything, the producers experimented with a lot of extremes,
some of it sticked, some of it was forgotten.
Dragon Ball came out and it started the shonen genre, but there was still some uncertainty as to what anime should be.
And then, it happened, some mad lad named Hideaki Anno made a little show called Evangelion.
It's difficult to explain just how big Eva was, it pretty much separated anime into the pre-Eva era and the post-Eva era,
There is too much complexity and meta shit to understanding how and why Eva did what it did, but basically,
it took everything the anime industry was experimenting with and made it into a more consise form.
This marks the sad end of experimentation, however, it's the start of the golden age of anime.
All of the best and more popular anime of all time came from the post-Eva era, the big 3, Pokemon and all the good stuff
came out here, i think it lasted from 1995 to 2012, but some might disagree.
(This is where some of the weird hate for SAO comes from, people say that SAO marked the end of the golden age,
but i dont think so. Here's what i believe: anime started as a medium for selling toys based on fre*king Disney of all things,
it's basically capitalism incarnate, it's just natural that it would go back to being about selling products eventually,
you cant just live of art alone, and oh boy, Japan would know.)
Honestly, i think anime has started getting a lot better lately, we still have remnants from that time,
like the endless influx of bad isekais that seems to just get bigger every season,
and the industry now behaving very safely and not really trying to experiment with new things, which is understandable,
anime has gone mainstream and there is A LOT of money invested in it, cant really be reckless anymore.
I'm personally enjoying anime currently, but i admit it feels a bit stagnant, there are passionate people working,
but the industry dont really give them the opportunity to do what they want, and the ones that kinda do,
do it with the prospect of making more money and not really caring for their work ethics (cough, cough Mappa...)
It would be nice if someone could shake the industry and start a new period of things being made for the sake of art,
we need a new Evangelion.
No, Luke probably reacted to BTS Anpanman which is why he mentions Korea because BTS made the Korean OP for it a few years back.
Luke, the most attractive thing why I subscribed to your YT and Patreon is because you really care about what you see on the screen, starting from AOT I was impressed by how you highlighted some things that I noticed only on the 2nd try.
So no need to explain that you are not about hype views :)
❤️
Yes, and it will truly crush your soul 😭😭😭
The biggest problem with the 90's Berserk adaptation is that it's basically just the backstory for the manga, it sets up the core storyline of the manga, and then stops at a massive cliffhanger and never continued. The CG followup attempts are all best left forgotten... I would say, check out the 90s Show, and it seems like it's up your alley, try the manga as well.
fun fact- lion king was a western remake for japanese Kimba the lion king. So this one is the original.
Yms kimba the white lion see it and under understand the different between kimba and lion king
Here are my 5 + 2 classic recommendations for your next OP & ED reactions:
1. (2004) Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha OP & ED (with 5 series, 4 movies and 2 games; OPs & some movie EDs sung by that era's anisong queen: Mizuki Nana)
2. (2005) Shakugan no Shana OP & ED (since u have watched Toaru OPs, they have some some similar singers)
3. (2000) Vandread OP & ED (fire retro 90s/00s songs)(check out the EDs for cheekiness)
4. (2011) Horizon in the middle of Nowhere OP & ED
5. (2018) Yuru Camp OP & ED
6. (2003) Chrono Crusade OP & ED
Special mention: (2008) Macross Frontier ED & insert (esp the EDs like "Diamond Crevasse" & "Northern Cross" are a MUST! and their longer forms!, Ao no Ether, Yousei)
classic
1. (2000) Inuyasha OP & ED
2. (1996) Rurouni Kenshin (the 1996 series) OP & ED
Fun Fact: The design of One Punch Man (Saitama) is homage/parody to the 1988 Anpanman 😆
Vaccine Man seems to be a parody of Baikinman. They are both voiced by Ryusei Nakao.
I'm surprised you didn't know Yuu Yuu Hakusho as someone who is a big fan of Hunter X Hunter, they are written by the same author. You should check it out. Another in there, Rurouni Kenshin, is one that must have been overlooked so far, this anime was everywhere at the time.
12:30 Yu Yu Hakusho is legendary!! Just had a Netflix adaptation out too and is by the same guy who made Hunter x Hunter. Definitely recommend it
Generally, anime got much darker on TV when they started airing late nights (Evangelion sorta was the breaking point - it was so controversial in its mainstream timeslot that many anime switched to late nights) 🤔
Direct-to-video OVAs/OAVs are a different matter since they don't have to follow broadcast standards 🤣
Get better Luke! Take good care of yourself, I miss you noisy introduction so much XD! Love your reactions by the way! Greetings from Costa Rica!
❤️

- Walt Disney Animation Studios -
Rapunzel, Eugene Fitzherbert, Cassandra, Varian, etc. (from Tangled Series),
Ralph (as a tall-grown ordinary human), Vanellope (as a tall-grown human), etc. (from Wreck-It-Ralph Series),
Elsa, Anna, Kristoff, Sven, Olaf( as a snow robot)(, Hans, Oaken, Kai, Mattias, Northuldra), etc. (from Frozen Series),
Hiro Hamada, Tadashi Hamada, Baymax, Honey Lemon, Go Go Tomago, Wasabi, Fred, Aunt Cass, Alistair Krei, Yokai, Mr. Yama, etc. (from Big Hero 6 Series),
Moana, Maui(, Tala, Tui, Sina), etc. (from Moana Series),
Asha, etc. (from Wish Series),
Mirabel Madrigal, "Abuela" Alma Madrigal, Bruno Madrigal, Félix Madrigal, Luisa Madrigal, Julieta Madrigal, Pepa Madrigal, Isabela Madrigal, Agustín Madrigal, etc. (from Ecanto Series),
Raya, etc. (From Raya and the Last Dragon Series),
Ethan Clade, Searcher Clade, Jaeger Clade, Diazo, Penelope Clade, (from Strange World Series),
Lewis Robinson, Franny Robinson, Wilbur Robinson, Lewis' Mother, Bud Robinson, Tallulah Robinson, DOR-15, etc. (from Meet the Robinsons Series),
Bolt as a pet dog, Mittens as a pet cat, Penny, Rhino as a pet hamster, Penny's Mother, (from Bolt Series),
etc.
- Pixar Animation Studios -
Merida, etc. (from Brave Series),
Buzz Lightyear as a human, Woody as a human, Jessie as a human, Bo Peep as a human, Andy Davis, Bonnie Anderson, Izzy Hawthorne, etc. (from Toy Story+Lightyear Series),

Of course, the background of this TV series and movies is mainly Metro City.

When the video is about songs ranges for over 50 years and every year only get 1 minute for just 1 song, a lot of good stuff just gets missed.
Again big surprise and very interesting choice! I need more videos like this 😂
OMFG THE NOSTALGIA OF EARLY 2000'S ANIME
MY CHILDHOOD! GIVE IT BACK T-T
OMG I love Love Hina... I think it was my first complete manga that I buyed
I know I'm getting old when I realize I started watching animes with Kimba and Princess Knight (not the years they were originally released, but when they were broadcasted in France, roughly 1977-78 when I was 5 or 6)... I'm turning 52 and still enjoy anime like the first day 🙂
6:44: in RE:Zero, this is a Subaru's Phone Ringtone (/Alarm?) from the episode when they fought the White Whale...
How is it that every single time I hear the Evangelion OP I get shivers and all emotional?!
Watch Urusei Yastura. It's great. It recently had a 2022 remake so pick whiever one you're more comfortable with but I'll always be an oldtaku.
Kimba the white lion is the original lion king and yes i watched kimba.
1975 a dog of flanders if you don’t recognize it’s subaru phone ring.
The Animegraphy 2012, 2013 etc Videos are pretty fun!
6:51 Dog of Flanders is originally a novel Written by an English lady in the 19th century about life in Belgium. It's a pretty sad story.
1972 - MAZINGER Z - The oldest anime I had watched
1974 - HEIDI - The oldest I kind of remember
1976 - Candy Candy - I remember this even less than Heidi
1979 - Mobile Suit Gundam - Not sure about this, maybe I'm mixing my memories with another gundam
1983 - Captain Tsubasa - The one I truly remember. Supercampeones in México
1986 - Dragon Ball/Saint Seiya - now, this is it
1989 - Ranma/Dragon Ball Z - With this anime I started to understand that the whole thing was different from western animation
I started watching anime in the 90's before even knowing other countries existed. I truly started watching in the 2000's, and ever since I have watched some of the oldest one while trying to keep up with interesting ones. Now I only watch like 3 or 4 every season.
cutey honey was wayy before its time. Very cultured. :3
Heidi of the alps was the first anime song that I remember by heart and tune. But I watch it on it's second or third re-run when I was a kid.
Oh, go watch Clannad. :3
Watch "A Dog of Flanders" if you love to cry! lol It's a great anime despite being so old. Very iconic.
