A live, semi-improvised performance, all on hardware, and inspired by winter looming. I've long wanted to make a couple of videos about how the sequencer really determines where the music goes, and I thought there was no better example of this than the NDLR, which is such a beautiful little inspiration device. In my opinion, I think the NDLR thrives at making interesting ambient explorations, and I hope I've demonstrated that here.
I've also wanted to make a "poly synth jam" and show each of the poly synths I currrently have next to each other. Some really interesting things revealed themselves here: 1) the Peak is the clear winner for bass; 2) I like the OB-6 a lot better for plucks or shorter decays than I do for pads; 3) the Abyss holds its own among these bigger names and is a real gem with lots of personality; 4) the Deckard's Dream isn't particularly rich or versatile, but adds the most beauty to the track, and it's a joy to make a patch from scratch.
Conductive Labs NDLR - Sequencing
Black Corporation Deckard's Dream + Meris Polymoon - Pad
Sequential/Oberheim OB-6 - Motif 1 (brighter arp)
Dreadbox Abyss + Strymon Big Sky - Motif 2 (mellower arp)
Novation Peak - Drone (bass monster)
Written and performed within a 24-hour period, and uploaded as is, with only a little compression/limiting on the master.

I just wanted to come back here nearly 2 years later to say: this is the video that started it all. Before this video, I'd only admired synthesizer music, and had only just begun exploring VSTs. This video opened me up to the weird and mysterious (and expensive 🤯) world of hardware synths, sequencing, dawless (and dawful) jamming etc.
Many thanks, and abundant gratitude to Mr Jay Hosking for all of his videos that help to demystify these devices. I am on a new life path, thanks in part to this video.
I shall now go support his patreon. I hope you will do the same.
Thanks for indulging me.
Thank you, Brett. This is amazing to read.
Did you get an NDLR and use it to drive compositions?
@@EshockT no. My setup is smaller and slower. Inspired, nevertheless.
@@TheBrettEnglish Your comment prompted me to get on Patreon and support Jay and LoopOp for good measure. The two of them combine to bring such a deeper understanding to electronic music to those of us who have been tangentially around synths but not active creators. I’m finding the NDLR an interesting music theory teaching tool because it really encourages experimentation in so many different modes and chord progressions. The motifs also promote voice leading which is one of those golden rules of music composition. There are few of those, but when changing chords it’s always better to repeat their common tones whenever possible is like one less variable to deal with. I ramble, but wanted to let you know the impact of thoughtful comments.
@@EshockT I too support the two of them ✊. A great team of deep information.
Imagine having this setup deep in a forest at a cabin, no civilization sound or any distraction, just music... life goals :) this is really lovely and calming.
Bon Iver but with synths
Just need electricity :-)
I definitely am trying to arrange something like that this winter...
I would probably die, as I would forget to get food and eat.
Wanna get high?
my god, everything about this is beautiful.
This piece is the piece i play for my friends , to impress them with what MY synthesizers CAN sound like - (if i had youre brain - which i dont, but like a seasoned stagemagician, i keep that info to myself) No matter how many times i hear this piece - it have a DEEP ,filmic mental impact ,-
This is the best desktop syth jam I've ever seen! Criminally low subscribers, only a matter of time before that number explodes! Keep doing what you're doing, much love, respect and support for Australia 🦘❤
This is a really nice jam. The text explaining what’s going in is nice too as it makes it easier to follow along and understand what everything is doing.
Jay Hosking, you have a remarkable gift my internet friend. I stumbled upon your video today because I'm excited about buying my first synthesizer the MOoG grandmother in about two month, and I just want to say my friend, that you exemplify the meaning of what it means to be a true synth artist. I hope to one day have as much gear as you and translate my soul into the electric as you do. Something great will come out of this for you if it already hasn't. I'll continue to enjoy your music man. Peace Brother.
Those progressions are just beautiful.
The layering of the different voices too.
I'll be listening to this again.
Thankyou.
Keep coming back to this. It is a perfect example of how expressive synthesizers can be even when sequenced. Absolutely stunning performance
Incidentally, I also just ordered a Polymoon and a DDRM MK2, a pair inspired by this video lol. Also ordered a K-Board Pro 4 for MPE goodness
this is raising sooo many goosebumps I don't know if i can keep listening
This song put me down for a 5 hour nap at the start of vacation. Fantastic.
This is the video that made me put in my order for a NDLR ! :)
Man, when the Novation Peak enters song 💜 Overall a lovely song and a delightful symbiosis of created patches and FX.
NDLR rocks. Has some intriguing rhythmic possibilities too when paired with Model Samples.
almost speechless, deeply moved
You are an inspiration Jay.
I keep your music close to my heart.
Thanks.
I really like how your head is in focus. Makes it look cinematic.
This made me laugh out loud! 🤣 Thank you 😊
Man, when the Peak comes in! What a sound!
I found out about the NDLR last night. Thanks to you I'm ordering today. Great device, stunning performance Jay! Your text descriptions help make the video superb.
Beautiful stuff! Heavy old school Tangerine Dream vibes
Very good. The music and the noodler.
Really a masterpiece. Your choice for your synths is incredible too
Baroque organ composers would totally find themselves at home in this compositional concept
I'm pretty sure Baroque organ composers would probably freak out and think they'd been adbucted by aliens if they were exposed to this setup
They ARE!
@@urmumsbaps This track is EPIC Sci fi film music!
Well the church organ was the first synthesizer if you think about it🤔
How beautiful!
my equal favourite music channels appreciating each other.
Two genuis together !!!
Looper, this man will be talked of, and his music played, in a time and space far far from here ❤️😭
Lovely collection of synths! And gorgeous sound - a continually shifting palette of analogue tones!
Beautiful sounds, beautifully put together ! The great descriptions were an added bonus to a stunning piece of music, love it !
Really, really nice, Jay - love that Deckard's dream
keep on doing just exactly what your doing here, could honestly listen all day and night. Thank you.
Dream setup 😎 beautiful piece of music 😍
I literally just went and ordered a NDLR after just 3 minutes of this video. I have never been so insta sold on a piece of gear in my life.
Back here listening to this again and loving the lush sounds, how the music builds and releases. A wonderful collection skilfully played.
Another great track Jay, thank you! My NDLR has arrived and I’ve been steadily introducing it to some friends to play with, it is incredible. You end up in some totally awesome places just following your ear and not thinking too hard on the technicalities of what you’re doing. Please keep the annotation in your vids, and the key, as getting a nice chord progression is such an amazing thing. Cheers!
This is the most beautiful synth music I've ever heard, magnificent!
Je-sus.....listened to this before, but the moment the Peak really puts it's back into it with the drone at 2:06...delicious!
Deckard's Dream... what a synth. Great arrangement and tones =)
Beautiful
This is beautiful. Seeing you make it is a bonus, but I would listen to this all day as a track
This sounds heavenly... Words don't do it justice
Hey Jay, i heared over and over again... Great Song, thx.
Beautiful NDLR jam! And an epic set of voices, tuned to perfection. Nice work.
That's intense. I can only imagine the experience of being the one pressing the buttons! I would love to hear this performed in the church of St Sulpice in Paris which has amazing acoustics with ability to handle massive low end hence Widor's Toccata composed on the monster organ there.
Jesus a Deckards and OB6. It's like a Grandfather speaking beautiful truths to his Grandson.
Words fall short to describe how much space this creates in my head ... So elegantly put together! Would make a wonderfull intro to a full album/story!
Found this yesterday - loved it. Had to come back today for more - this is seriously good stuff, well done!
Lovely sounds. Thanks for the music, upload and captions!
Reminds me a little of tangerine dream in the 1980s, very nice underwater sunlight was my favorite
That was epic! Bravo!!
Beautifully done Jay! Also, jealous of your Deckard's Dream and OB-6.
So good! Haunting and lovely.
Gorgeous, really nice combination of sonic textures and patterns. The fx also really add to it...
Majestic Melancholy : Magnificent , Mate ! Mmmm . . . Floating between Plankton and Nebulae , between Quarks and Galactic Clusters . . . Total Zen . . . YESssss
I want that Noodler thing : never been any good at chords and now i know why that never bothered me
Amazing performance!! Love it!
Thank you for this inspirational performance and detailing your work flow as well!
Yes I had to come back to this and play it through a couple of times. It's good
Great video, great sound, and particularly great that you took the time to add notes! Thanks for the hard work you put into this.
Very cool! The explanations were much appreciated too!
Stunning! Well used gear in your hands ,love it Jay!
This is my favorite of your jams... love it.
Unbelievable. Good explanation as well, sounded beautiful!
My NDLR just arrived! Already a natural friend with my Blofelds, will pair with my Prophet 12 too... And with my Specular Tempus and Avalanche Run and Ventris... NDLR is such a fantastic tool! I am already rocking and jamming away... Thanks for this inspiration! :)
This is an awesome performance. Thank you for sharing.
This is incredible. If there's ever a sequencer that's tailor made for ambient, the NDLR is it. And you used it exactly how it was made to be used. Simply inspiring!
My new favorite song. This is absolutely beautiful.
Ooh....my sweet God in Heaven, you did it again.....Flabbergasted by sheer beauty....Torn and Ripped by the elegance and class......this oceanic feeling is so awsome and evotive.....you are Great !
What a sound generation spaceship console. Inspiring, sequencer with real time tweaks.... lovely.
Thank you for indulging my ears. That was magnificent!
very beautiful sound , incredible sequencer but you use it greatly and the result is awesome !!! thanks for this great performance
speechless how beautiful this is...
Man, this is my first time hearing your stuff and seeing one of your videos. You're fantastic! I love the commentary while it plays, so enjoyable to read while we listen.
Thanks for this presentation, excellent through and through.
Wonderful, inspiring and gorgeous!
Happy that they had created such an amazing sequencer and for the affordable price, its not bad. This is exactly what I had imagine to create my music through just one small device being able to produce amazing melodic, and ambient sequence with all the modules/synths around it. Because it really all matters in the feel of the music, I just can't wait.
I got a wake up call from my electric company. Heart racing. Could've slept some more.
Listening to this helped me calm down. Thanks for the music!
Damn, you are so good at this...
You should get this chap on Jamie.
@@davecjd Yes, I'd like to, going to be playing this on Sunday, it will be the 3rd of his I've palyed...Love what he does.
@@GEOSynths I agree, very impressive. That Deckards Dream is wonderful.

This took me places and calmed me down, completely brilliant. Thank you!
This performance is what made me order the NDLR, shows everything what the NDLR is made for and is capable to do in my opinion. Very well choosen sounds!!
Really nice Jay. I think your annotations really add to the production. Looking forward to your next outing...
Really nice work. I love the explanations of what you are doing throughout the video

Excellent track Jay - love your setup and the NDLR is fantastic, I will certainly look into one of these; it could well be a "new best friend" for my synths and modular racks!! :)
