Red Winter (GMT) contains the best English-language history of the battle. We had some Finns helping, a Russian living in Finland who wrote about the Winter War, and we got the scans of the Finnish unit diaries from the Finnish digital archives. The maps in those showed movements that were previously unknown.

John Astell's current research for Europa is amazing. He's written a small book on Soviet energy production in WWII that's required reading.

Carl Fung is one of two or three people I would interview on research vs. design.

The biggest problem with failure to use foreign languages in research is not that the TO&E will have minor errors in it, like you won't know that a particular Dutch brigade at Waterloo had detached two companies to guard the baggage train or something like that. It's that you'll make all the British units elite and all the Dutch units terrible because all you read is sources written in English.

I highly recommend "The Men Who Lost America: British Leadership, the American Revolution and the Fate of the Empire" by Andrew J. O’Shaughnessy

Sorry for all the posts. Re Linda Mosca...
This is from Wikipedia: After the publication of Battle of the Wilderness, Mosca designed Thirty Years War: Rocroi (1975), and co-designed two other games: Gondor: The Siege of Minas Tirith (1976) with Richard Berg; and King Arthur (1979) with Richard Mosca

good show but think research and mechanics are separate entities--would be interested in looking deeper into both subjects-for instance how are counter factors determined especially strength ratings also would like to see validation on methodology of mechanics used-- thanx Gary

Ardy , with your knowledge of War Games , do you know of any regarding the ww2 Shetland Bus , came across the story on a recent trip to The Shetland Islands off Scotland.

With more research and holding on too much onto reality, does it not quickly become a simulation instead of a game. I do not mind a game where the odds are stacked against you but there still is an outside chance of a what if outcome. Example is the Fredericksburg scenario from Rebel Fury. The odds are stacked very much against the Union but yet I have managed a win due to good dice rolls for the Union and abysmal rolls for the Confederates.

I detest Gettysburg games that straitjacket the players. That's why I start all my Gettysburg games on June 26, when Early's division enters the map.
