I live in Massachusetts lots of trees I can’t go anywhere as far as you without loss os signal two days ago I crashed into a 100 + pine tree on RTH altitude to low knocking out the gps module, I loved the video exciting nerve racking at the same time good job!
Cold temperatures and wind are not a good mix for drones. I would suggest flying into the wind when you take off, that way you’re flying with the wind when you fly home. Also be careful posting videos when you clearly break the 400ft ceiling. Just sayin.
You may have made the mistake of flying in high winds and and not coming home soon enough but the cold weather also affects the flight time of the battery.
I feel like even at 0% the Mini 2 batteries have a little gas in the tank so to speak. I was out over a river trying to get back and my battery hit 0% with about 2400ft left to go. I was able to keep pushing up and forward to get back. My speed dropped to 12mph but I was able to get it home and land it in my hand. To be fair the wind was only about 5-7mph that day so it was pretty calm and warm(65F) for a December in MO so that could have also helped the situation. The battery was not damaged and I have flown with it several time since then. Glad you got your drone back. That is always a scary situation.
Great experiences and I’m going to learn from it not to push it to the limit and to not fly too far in thin air and snowy weather … I just got this same drone for Christmas from the wife … I’ve been enjoying it already and ordering accessories and a case
The reason your gimbal was not able to go up anymore is not ice as you would have seen it covering the lens if it got close to being that bad. What stopped it is the craft going into wind and it struggling to push through it. So you had your nose down basically, and the gimbal can only rotate so far up.
Just out of curiosity made some calculations based on how fast 10% of the battery is consumed in IDLE\IDLE + record 4k mode, those might not be super precise because i am using only 10% for reference, but it seems like mini 2 needs about 10 mAmp per minute to IDLE and about 14 mAmp to IDLE + record, so recording by itself consumes about 4 mAmps per minute. Considering normally longest flight will be around 27 minutes, 27 min x 4 mAmp per minute = 108 mAmps total spend on recording per 27 min flight. Battery capacity is 2250 mAmp, so it's around 4.5% of the battery per flight. So even in a very cold environment when battery capacity could be lower, recording in 4k will probably not take away more then 6-10% of the battery. Tho it is better to test these numbers using more then 10% of the battery for better accuracy.
I try to remain aware that if I'm flying in temperatures below 32F, all best are off as far as distance, battery and maneuverability are concerned. I fly it fairly close to me in conditions like that. I'm glad you got her back. She could so easily have ended up in a tree somewhere. Thanks for sharing your terrifying moments.

A schoolboy error but it happens. Its a horrible feeling when you fear of losing your investment. Lesson learnt, be careful.
I don't understand why so many people want to test the maximum distance and going above the legal altitude and no spotters. In Canada we have to stay below 400' and not do anything stupid with the small drones under 250 grams. I'm always checking the wind direction and intensity before heading away from me. Hopefully I don't loose one because of going too far with the wind and having to fight coming back.
US is also 400ft if you ever take your drone into the US you need to write the TRUST exam and make sure you follow the REC flight rules also register your drone if over 250 g It is not black and white as it might seem I fly in Canada and the US recreation only period the us fine is 100k the Canadian fine is 5k Putting anything on RUclips will put you out of Rec flying by the FAA so be careful

A few obvious tips for new flyers. Never fly on a windy day, never fly on a cold day (32f is DJI min low temp, battery drains faster when cold), if you get caught in a sudden wind, drop altitude as much as possible.. Try to fly where there are few trees and buildings. Drones are like magnets to trees. Always have a pre-determined emergency landing spot where you have easy access, if you need to pick it up.
Cool looking area to fly, but looks fairly cold out there. Good job on the flying, looks very smooth. Glad you were able to get back the drone and it did not have a hard landing. We enjoyed watching your video, thank you for sharing
Fly out into the wind, fly home with the wind. Reduce altitude until you're just clearing the treetops. Set the RTH altitude to the height of the tallest trees.
FYI, The batteries in the mini 2 are lithium polymer ( known as lipos ). They are one of the most UNSTABLE batteries on the market, if they are not treated properly. It’s dangerous to allow them to discharge to zero percent. Also not good for them to be over charged. They have started many fires and caused property damage.
Thanks you, I enjoyed it the same happens to Me yesterday, on my first flight, by mistake I cancelled the return home, then crashed in to a tree, but am glad it was fine,
Might wanna get a set of landing skids to put on the bottom - at least if the snow isn't too soft it can sit a bit above perhaps protecting the camera and gimbal a bit more since the mini to really sits low on the ground. You can also get some pretty bright strobes to put on it to make it easier to see for situations like what you ran into. Also careful of the height there, way above legal limits for the nature of the area you were flying in :)
Yep he was way above 400ft hope he has a 107 license.... The FAA is watching and the fine is huge your worry about a 500$ drone but not a 100 000$ fine
Well if your climbing in sport mode it draws a lot of power . If you kept doing that for 5 minutes then it would have died because it is always recalculating flight time. Wind and temperature also plays a factor for obvious reasons but I wouldn’t look at that at all and just keep an eye on the %of battery left
You are lucky it didn't go down in the woods man, that was close. Please stop recording yourself breaking VLOS and max height restrictions, it's hard enough for drone pilots now as it is, doing this stuff just makes it more difficult and helps fan the flames of irresponsible flying which again, only leads to more restrictions and oversight.
Well said. Every video I watch on RUclips is people flying their drones illegally. No wonder they keep tightening the rules and making it harder to fly. Everyone is doing distance test and title of video is “crashed my drone”. This is exactly what the FAA etc. are trying to avoid. Way to give the public more reason to push for tighter restrictions. Please fly responsibly and legally. It might make for extra views for but makes things worse for those of us that just want to fly our drones as a hobby.
@@precisionflight2296 actually I haven’t. I have my pilots license, registered my larger drone and always fly in visual line of sight as required in Canada. I want to be able to fly my drone and take photos and videos for my enjoyment. This is what they were designed for. They were not designed to make every flight a test of pushing them to their limits and risking losing connection so that they are no longer under control. Those are the reasons that the public and FAA want to restrict them so much. I guess in the US you don’t have to keep visual line of sight to make sure they don’t hit someone or something like they do here in Canada...
Great video! Next time, lower your altitude and fly in sport mode. Then you would have a better chance of getting the drone back home. Also, based off the estimated flight time, you flew into the wind on the way home. That’s why you lost your battery life quick.
Not sure if this was commented on, but the drone gave you specific warning to lower altitude At 11:25 - advising you that wind would be reduced. The logic in this firmware is precisely why these are $600 and not 150 toy drones. Also, that's the first time I ever heard gimbal used as a verb; "its not gimbaling" LMAO 🤣🤪😂
Bro this was literally my first flight experience too...Like mine headed further and further away like it lost signal or jammed and all I could do was watch from the monitor 😬
I'm reasonably sure your announcement of your new Mavic Air didn't do much for this young man. Hey, I crashed my car!! "Really? Too bad for you! I just bought a new Mercedes!
Some big mistakes! Never fly out of line of sight.( part 107) Fly out against wind, and a tail wind returning. Use Sport mode if retuning in a head wind. Cold Temps can reduce battery life by half! Hope you learned all of these lessons. You are extremely lucky. Good luck in future flight plans.
You're flying way too high, in cold windy conditions, that's why your battery is not lasting and your flight time is reduced! The little Mini 2 and Mavic Mini are very capable drones but they struggle in high wind, remember the higher you fly the windier it gets! When you were outside at ground level I heard how strong the wind was, you were very lucky you didn't have a flyaway! That gimbal freeze you mention was just the delay caused by weak signal sometimes. Also, as many others have said, use the wind to your advantage on the return journey when your battery is more than half discharged! Never fly back into a strong headwind with a low battery!😯 Edit- cold weather flying tip for you, warm your battery up in a pocket prior to putting it in your drone!
I use an app called UAV forecast. Not only does it give all weather conditions at ground level, it also has a wind and temp profile from 33 to 5,000 ft. Between ground level, and 500 ft, the winds could be 20mph+ different, and 20 degrees cooler.
@@orion6251979 Yeah good tip, you can see clearly the stronger wind speed as altitude increases! You wouldn't think there would be much difference from ground level up to say 100ft but there can be a huge difference! 😯⚠️👍😎
So I'm new to the mavick family and I haven't seen anything that says I have to register or contact the FAA I live in the Midwest I guess my question is do I have to register you can help me out and I liked in subbed
I would have made for the clearing to the drone's starboard side around the 16:38 mark. If you hadn't cleared the trees there is a good chance that it would be stuck in a tree and impossible to easily retrieve. Better to have to walk another few hundred yards along the road than lose the drone to a treetop.
I've never flown my mini 2 down below 10% in battery, but one thing I noticed that I don't think I like about the programming, is that it went into a forced landing mode when you were at 10%. It appears that the cancel button was greyed out. At that point, it was trying to force land itself when you were over the trees, and you were fighting with it to maintain altitude and to continue forward. That was eating up a lot of extra battery just fighting with it. There always needs to be an "emergency manual override" in all situations. I get that DJI probably made it this way to prevent the drone from just falling out of the sky, but a good operator is always going to know what's best for the situation.
Well you learnt a lot of lessons that day. Altitude of 487ft is excessive, sports mode may have saved you in the wind, record the last minute so you have some video cache on your phone. Land it before critical battery by a landmark so you have some juice to locate with gps and find my drone feature. Fly into the wind on the way out so the wind brings you back. Also technically i think you broke laws on VLOS and Altitude? Glad you got it back though.
@@MaddieGilson Not intended to be drone police, the height as well as adding danger also adds to the problem of higher winds generally the higher you go up. I have made mistakes myself, too high in wind, lost VLOS and nearly crashed after getting disoriented and basically just not thinking how the drone or myself would cope as a new pilot back in my earlier flying days. We have CAA in UK 🇬🇧

Well if your climbing in sport mode it draws a lot of power . If you kept doing that for 5 minutes then it would have died because it is always recalculating flight time. Wind and temperature also plays a factor for obvious reasons but I wouldn’t look at that at all and just keep an eye on the %of battery left

Never fly out of sight rec flyer also and not above 400ft
Nice shoes for snow :D
Ikr haha 😂
You're flying way too high, in cold windy conditions, that's why your battery is not lasting and your flight time is reduced!
The little Mini 2 and Mavic Mini are very capable drones but they struggle in high wind, remember the higher you fly the windier it gets!
When you were outside at ground level I heard how strong the wind was, you were very lucky you didn't have a flyaway!
That gimbal freeze you mention was just the delay caused by weak signal sometimes.
Also, as many others have said, use the wind to your advantage on the return journey when your battery is more than half discharged!
Never fly back into a strong headwind with a low battery!😯
Edit- cold weather flying tip for you, warm your battery up in a pocket prior to putting it in your drone!
How do you record audio
Post production
Your gimbal is not looking straight forward
So I'm new to the mavick family and I haven't seen anything that says I have to register or contact the FAA I live in the Midwest I guess my question is do I have to register you can help me out and I liked in subbed
Depends on the drone
more range tests
where is this?
Northern wisco
Here’s a tip don’t wear crocs in snow lol
you can turn off the video to save battery and just use the map i believe
You can’t turn off live video feed,. Also it’s very dangerous to fly like that if you can’t see your drone
dont know why you keep turning off rth...just press forward and lower it let it do its thing
Trying to conserve battery
Post more video of mini2 superman :)
I would have made for the clearing to the drone's starboard side around the 16:38 mark. If you hadn't cleared the trees there is a good chance that it would be stuck in a tree and impossible to easily retrieve. Better to have to walk another few hundred yards along the road than lose the drone to a treetop.
Go into Sport mode and lower your Altitude next time. And no. 1 Do not WHERE crocs in the snow..
This ever happens to me I'm landing near a road and pining 'locate my drone'
WOW 4.5 miles total.
Ur mini 2 is way better then mine it wont even go 1km away with a few trees
Pay attention to battery level. 😉
Excessive and illegal.
@@n1rbd Yep it is Lol, I was trying not to sound like drone police Lol
@@woodydroneson No need to be drone police but if we are not the FAA will and that could be worse
I did a range test with the mini 2 , I when to 4110 meters and I got back it time
I try my mini 2 and and max I got was 3.5km and I lost signal in open area
Depends how your controller was pointed it plays a very large factor at long distance .. try to point the end directly at the drone
