I'm glad that you made it back but I picked 3 mistakes at the start of your video and then another when you were receiving low and critical battery warnings. 1. Doing a range test with a drone you knew nothing about. You certainly weren't familiar with its flight characteristics 2. Flying over water with a drone you knew nothing about. 3. Flying with a tail wind that was pushing you beyond the maximum rated speed of the drone. Yet again flying a drone where you didn't know the characteristics of that drone 4. When you received your first low battery warning on your way home, you should have turned left and headed to a point on the land that you could have got to. Infact you had many opportunities where you could've turned left and headed to the main land, landed safely and then gone around and collected your drone. Even landing on that breakwater you were flying over wouldve been preferable to loosing your drone in the water Sorry, if this sounds harsh, but really it's droning 101. Know your drone, know your limitations.
If anyone has this issue its simple. Switch it to N mode and fly back slower also don't record. With N mode this person would have more battery life and the drone would have been okay. I have done it before. Also if you you know that the place your flying to is far again don't recorded anything until you get to the place.
Well when it says return to home the first time, you should do what it says, then you wouldn't have to stress about it...The Drone knows it needs to return to home with the conditions but if you fail to heed the warnings, don't blame the drone.
if you let it return to home by itself and not interfere, it could have reached the home destination because it was on Sport Mode, a lot of time was wasted while you were thinking twice, and you only let it fly again at a few seconds so, a wrong decision I guess. But it's Ok. I had the same experience, but in my case, it landed in our neighbor's backyard 50 meters away lol, I'm glad my neighbor told me about it since my drone got my phone number on it.
I don't understand why people want to rely on the RTH function when you can just as easily fly back home yourself. Doing a range test on your first or second flight doesn't seem to smart to begin with. If you do a range test, always head out against the wind so you'll have tailwind on the way back. Use normal mode which is more energy economical compared to sports mode. At 0% the battery isn't empty at all, it's at about 3,6 volts per cell and you can continue until about 3,4 tot 3,3 volts per cell. It's not advisable to keep flying at that battery level but in these situations it's good to know what the real limit is. Other than all that, I'm glad you did make it back.
Sport mode sucks juice mate! Although in high wind, you may have no choice. Most economical speed is around 8-10m/s (28-36kph) (in high wind, just give it full stick Normal mode). I can understand the trepidation, but that hesitation on the breakwater cost you 5% battery!
Absolutely disastrous hesitation over the island. Why the F did you spend 30 seconds of hover and battery drain out there? I hope people watching this will learn what NOT to do.
Lol would have made it just fine if you didn't hesitate for so long. Make a decision and go. You made this stressful. Glad your mini 2 didn't take a dip.
You wasted hover time.. Then you not stop record.. That consume battery.. If that happen again slowly find land first then come back home close as can..
You literally wasted your battery resources staying for some time till it reached 4 percent no one does that because clearly you can see the other side that would make it at 6 percent completely
Thanks for sharing. Haven’t had my Mini 2 for long and have plenty of learning experiences. I recently watched a video of a Mini flying over water with zero battery for 800metres. Similar to your experience.
Wow, what not to do. Good that you are posting this, I am planning on getting a drone, and need to watch all the "don't do this" or "red flag" moments. If you are able to achieve high speeds, going down wind, know that you may not make it back if over water. Excellent that you posted this video.
You are right my brother, i learned it hard way last year i flew my drone and it wanted to return home automatically but i decided to cancel it because the battery was 50% and it was far away from me ,so the time i return it home the battery was 10% and it was forced to land , and i had to walk for 5km to fetch it and i was stressing because i did not knew whether it landed in the river or on the road because vehicle could crash it , i shall never ever cancel when it want to return home
Perhaps its not such a good idea to fly long distances over water. If you do don't go too far and if possible go against the wind on the way out and come back with the wind pushing the drone home.
That was an insane close call! I think trying to fly back while keeping it as low as possible (5 to 10 meters above the water) would have helped. Winds get a lot stronger as you get higher up.
Really no fault of drone. You should not fly out over water with wind behind and then go so far. Then when you saw battery decreasing, why did you not turn to the nearest land and drive to pick up drone. However pleased the Mini 2 made it against the odds. That was tense!
Mate, get her out of sports mode for a start, it uses heaps more battery power. Use normal mode. Sports mode is like having your foot flat to the floor in your car burning up extra fuel. Second, you hovered around on the other side for so bloody long you could have gone back and forth three times, lol. Beaut video though mate showing us what not to do.
Been there..... I had to jump over a barb wire fence in a very dangerous place to retrieve it, but I succeded. I waited until dark and I borrowed my moms rug and placed it over the the barb wire. I climbed the 10 foot fence found my mini 2 using the find my drone feature and got my moms rug down and ran home. She didn't even notice I borrowed her rug. I was all sweaty thought I was get busted. I am much more careful now
Consider yourself lucky, i am happy for you that the drone made it back. I really think that in the state of your panic, you lost a lot and i mean a lot of time to decide hovering at the end of the first island. Lesson learned and thanks for sharing this to public.
Hey buddy. That was very nice of u to share the experiences with the DJI Mini 2. Really glad that u manage to landed the drones safely. Maybe i can share a little tips, if u want to fly far and get much distance, always use the normal mode and begin with flying against the wind. U can use the UAV Forecast app to predict wind condition etc. BTW, very nice videos and experience there buddy. Have a nice day and cheers from Malaysia. 🙂👍
All the videos I have watched it seems to have an effective one way range of 4km under ideal conditions. Patiently waiting for the mini 2 I've ordered. I think I will limit myself to 3km away when I have got comfortable flying it.
never panic. that is all you need to know.. also make sure the weather is good and always fly on full battery ..if you ever get stuck lower the aircraft and fly it back to you. also never panic.
Having balls to do a range test on first flight, above water (not to mention the ocean) is total SiCK. Nice flight!!. Until you have flown over extended water some have no idea. I kiss my drone every time it comes back. 😆
Oh wow that was intense!! That hesitation at the island waiting to decide to cross that last stretch of water used up a lot of your battery! I guess you learned a lot from this flight, like always fly out into the wind so you have the wind helping you back when the battery is over half discharged etc Good job getting it back.😎👍 I've added your channel, hopefully you'll check out my Mavic Mini related channel and connect? 😎👍
Wow cool video, but very stressful on almost losing the drone. Glad you were able to land it on the ground and it did not end up in the water. Thank you for sharing
Jesus just watched your video my blood pressure. Lol is sky high thank good u got it back.lesson learnt for us new to this hobby.great video by the way .thank you

Why did you try to get the drone higher up in the air when you are already having battery problems? You are dead wrong there. Its not an whinged airplane where you can trade hight for distance! With a drone you just did make your problem worse.
Hi mister... I had this same problem just once on my mini 2. I think this happend also on my second flight with mini 2. I Did not get any rth message. I am glad you got your mini back! I always say. Fly always against the wind. Bedankt!
Thanks for sharing your video. As stressful as it was for you, it makes you realise how close you can be to losing your drone. My mini 2 crashed because I tried to avoid breaking the CAA rules going over a bridge with vehicles (not sure really if I had to based on the 250g rule, but I was not completely sure). I had put the drone in RTH. But realised I was going over traffic so started lowering the drone whilst it was in RTH mode (I couldn't turn off RTH because the large structure was blocking the signal) to try and get under the bridge instead. The drone smashed into the side of the bridge, about 4 ft above the void (it was a big bridge). I did find the drone minus the camera and top cover, but it was a complete right off. If I'd let the drone complete the RTH, I'd still be with the drone, but would have possibly broken the CAA rules!!! Instead I reacted and stopped it doing that, but lost my drone (did I do the right thing, perhaps not). I'd had it for 2 months!!! £420 down the swanny|..... Wont be relying so much on RTH in the future. I am glad you got yours back safely, just...
Glad you got it back, it just confirms what I have learnt already in the last 12 months, always fly into the wind on the outbound wind and return with the wind so you get a push back home. You could have also filmed the flight in various sections and edited it together with crossfades, launching each time closer from the shore on points A to B. I have had a few close calls with mine either trees or water, but they made for a few good videos on my own channel! I believe RTH is only in Normal Speed, so it will not fight the wind as well. You made the right choice with Sports Mode, but I would have landed on that stretch of land running towards the island missing of the map and made a run to collect it Lol
In cine mode it won’t have the speed to push against the wind. If the wind is higher than the top speed on cine it won’t go anywhere . Only option in high wind is to lower and go into sport mode and push against the wind. Better still return to home sooner

One of the main reasons why I let RUclipsrs do range tests. You got really lucky there.
DJI have done their best to make the Mini 2 drone "idiot-proof" They very nearly failed in your case 😂

So many people fly drones over water with low battery. Why? If I had a low battery I wouldn’t be over water.
You did do good controlling the DJI mini 2 especially in those strong winds, but the only thing I would have done is, I would get a better attitude.
Lower altitude = softer winds. He did good flying it low.

Best lesson is not to fly it over wide waters. If it lands on land you might recover it but if it lands in water, it is good bye Black bird.
Woww... amazing job.... maybe on the way back you could of saved battery on "Normal Mode" ! Happy for you :)
