One of the hidden gems on youtube. . Awesome content. Commenting for the algorithm. I subscribed. Thank you!
Buddy you have the most informative videos on the Internet. A lot of these people don't explain things properly like you do so for that I congratulate you!
I appreciate that! Glad I could help
@@AllThingsFunHydrographics Hi ,thanks for video. Will this work for cast acrylic material as I need a clear see through sections that is not spray painted so scuffing will not work.
After seeing this in car factory videos, I tried it at home with a propane torch and my garbage bin. The paint was easy to pick off the untreated areas, but it stuck securely to the treated area. No post cleaning. Amazing.
Been waiting for this one BIG Thanks!!!!
Made that video just for you.... and all the others that have asked about it.
Thank you. Just informative and useful.. 👍
Great video! Never really understood this process. Guess I’ll look at plastic in a different light!
It's not too bad, so many people get way too involved in flame treating and all the science behind it. All it does is change the molecluar structure of the exterior on the plastic, and makes it rougher so that paint will stick to it.
🤣🤣🤣🤣. Booger hooks 🪝. Funny as. Good video 👍🏼😎
Thank you
Great Videos! Im looking to do some hydrodipping of PVC. What kind of prep should I use prior to paining
Hello from Brazil. Thanks for sharing this great tip. Would be possible to use also hand sand to improve the adhesion or it is not necessary? If the sand papper helps, what type will be better to ensure a good quality?
Listen to REM in your closet LOL That's Gold
If it sank; get da' paint! If it float; burn da' coat!
I’ve seen people use large propane burners to re-condition like stadium seats in the such. Can you do a video on that sort of restoreration? Or can you provide information as to what the actual outcome would be? We are hobby kayakers, and have some of our boats that are sun faded etc. I’ve been considering re-conditioning mine with a large barreled, propane torch. Can you touch on whether this is a good idea or not or the long terms affect of restoration of this kind?
I just bought a body kit for my car and saw its made of polyproplyene, was thinking of painting it myself and wanted to make sure I do it right the first time. After the scuff and heat treat, I wanted to use plastic prep cleaner, and then SEM plastic adhesion promoter.
Go for it!
I'm a fan of the K.I.S.S. method.
me too! Mostly because I am the last S. LOL
How long after you heat it do you have to be able to paint it or is it like once it’s heated you can just paint it whenever you want?
Great video! Got a sinker. Scuff plastic with what grit sandpaper plz?
220, 300, or 400 will work fine.
Just the tip, just for a second, just to see how it feels.
Couple questions:
You specifically called out propane - why, what's special about propane vs butane or other sources?
Will a heat gun work? It seems like the plastic just needs to get hot
Also, when you say after it's flame treated and degreased again it's ready to paint, does that mean ready to dip, or ready for a base coat?
Does a heat gun do the same thing?
Do p80 lowers need flame treating?
I'd be so down to move next to A.T.F to learn and work for these guys, I've learned so much from watching these videos and I really do would like to learn more, this is definitely something I want to do, PULL ME OVER THERE A.T.F!!!! ILL WORK FULL TIME!😂❤
I'm joking and being serious I so see myself doing this down the road
You should check out the online training we do, it's awesome and I get to teach all the stuff that youtube wont let me talk about.
Is there any advantage to flame treating HDPE joints prior to welding ? ( To improve sealing for tank fabrication for example)
Good stuff here. Note that you need an 'oxidizing flame' that looks blue because you are not just heating the surface, you are oxidizing the surface. This will be different than a 'reducing flame' that is more yellow. A reducing flame is designed to heat more slowly, as with the settings on a bunsen burner, and the yellow flame has more unburned contents that show up as sooty smoke above the yellow flame. The source of the fuel just helps with control, so not just propane. Even using a kerosene campstove can get this effect, as long as the flame is hot blue.
Can butane or map gas be used?
@@strawberrysuperglue Yes, either of them CAN be adjusted to get an oxidizing flame, the trick is the knowledge and skill to get YOUR SETUP to produce that oxidizing flame with the fuel that you are using. Each setup has many variables, so I cannot describe all the combinations and limitations.
brother, do you think this will work on epoxy resins?
Question!!! Can you dip powder-coated items? Just curious, I powder coat parts for myself and Wondering if the film would stick to Powdercoat.
are you sure the cleaning and wiping dont degrade the flame surface energy improvement? I dont know. just wondering.
QUESTION! (please please answer lol) Will this work on HDPE? I have a kayak I want to paint but am worried from what I've read so far that nothing will stick to it. But flame treating seems to be the only thing that is a viable option and obviously I'm not wanting to waste time energy and effort if I don't need to - What do you think????
Will heat treating work on NYLON plastic parts?
Can’t find pure propane in my area? Could it be replaced with butane?
OK... dumb question. I watched this video, and I watched the paint prep video, but *when* in the process do you flame treat? Before you a scuff, or after?
clean the parts first, scuff, then flame treat.
If I’m going to try and hydro dip, a car radiator Reservoir,(plastic). After I heat treat it, then scuff with scotch brite. Should I paint it too,b4 I dip it? Or leave the paint out.
Yes. paint before you dip or else the dip wont have anything to stick to
When you are talking about activates?? Can I buy it where I buy my automotive paint at? If so what are we talking about? When I hear activator I'm thinking about the activator I use in automotive type activator?? Thanks you, Please clear me up on this.
You ok?? Didn’t have any flash backs ? Lol and I mean FLASH!! Lol
LOL... actually I only screamed like a girl the first time I lit the torch up. After that I was fine.
After you have or have not flamed a part do you use adhesion promoter before your 2k primer ?
If your using primer and base paint then yes spray adhesion promoter. If using One Hit Wonder paint then no. It has spray adhesion promoter built in
@@AllThingsFunHydrographics thanks for that we don’t have that in the uk I don’t think, is it only bare plastic to use adhesion promoter for ? I’ve been using it just recently on some jobs seems to work well
My bloopers would be like "BEEP! sucker! Mother BEEP! BEEP! BEEP! BEEP!
Do you know if you can hydrodip 3D printed PLA plastic parts without flame treatment please?
I flame treat everything
@@AllThingsFunHydrographics Hey thanks for the reply! Did you ever actually dip PLA before though? I wasn't sure if it needed an undercoat as I have different colour PLA so can just use a clear primer + dip. I just wasn't sure if the flame treatment can just be avoided if I'm just spraying plastic primer first.
I have dipped lots of 3d printed parts, and I flame treat all of them very carefully. Plastic primer is garbage and never works the way it is advertised. Use 2k epoxy primer only.
Hi is this a must, to flane treat before hydro dipping a plastic material
If it needs to be flame treated yes.
@@AllThingsFunHydrographics and to know if it needs to be flame treated, we have to cut a piece of it and check?
@@cesello4777 Evidently
Do you still need to use a plastic adhesion promoter?
I dont, but many people do.
Cheers mate 👍
Do you have any videos of scratching ya material without sand blasting?
Yes I do, It is called Paint Prep for Hydro Dipping, covers everything you need to know about paint prep.
@@AllThingsFunHydrographics appreciate it
Why do so many people use sanding / primer when this method seems so much easier and faster?
Is there a way to test the plastic without cutting a small piece off?
Not that I know of. Do some research online, I am sure someone knows a way to do it, just not me.
dunk the whole thing in?? or flame treat it anyway.. dont overthunk it
So basically burning off a layer somewhat. Does this applies to rubber like on the sb3 brace arm part?
NEver NEver never try to dip rubber. It will not work and the flame will melt it.
Is this better than using Bulldog??
Even when using Bulldog the plastic needs to be flame treated first. I know they say it doesn't but I have seen multiple people have delamination issues from not flame treating first and only using adhesion promoter.
Can I use a heat gun?
This guy said no. Another video said a heat gun is not as effective
Bout time. Lol
I know right.
"You dont want whatever is on your nast booger hooks on the thing you're cleaning"
Removes booger hook from nose
LMAO
Overthunk dont hear many ppl say that anymore😅
I say lot's of random stuff sometimes.
As someone who has used plastic gloves alot.. blow into them first
Thanks for the tip
Or baby powder.
Just don’t over thunk it!!!
Don't hurt your thunker, by thunking too much. 😂
flame the float scuff the sink
Someone needs to make that into a song so I can sing it! LOL
@@AllThingsFunHydrographics sounds like something the dwarves would sing in the hobbit
@@AllThingsFunHydrographics I bet you won’t 😂
Really? You DON'T have to use unicorn tears? I've been doing it wrong then. I need to re-thunk my life choices...
Don't waste your unicorn tears on testing plastic.... they are much better to dip a twinkie in! LOL Who would have thunk unicorn tears and twinkies went together so well.
😂😂😂
Hey now... this is a very serious channel. We don't allow joking around or laughing here! 😉😂
