Hello, I do not have a written step-by-step as this was my first time attempting this technique. I still have much to learn. I can tell you the basics of what I know. I will be revisiting this technique and testing everything I didn't try in this video to try and answer all of the questions I wasn't able to in this one. I hope this helps. 1.) Fill a large container with water. a.) Use anything big enough to dip your item of choice, width, and length-wise. Also, remember that the paint will ruin the container, so choose something you don't mind ruining. I kept mine as the designated hydro-dipping container. b.) I used water straight out of the backyard hose on a summer day. I don't know if warmer water would make a difference. I have heard that it does, so consider that. 2.) Prep your item before dipping. I like to prime my bottles; so the colors look brighter, and it also serves as a base coat to cover any spots that might not get some paint. I used white, gold, black, and silver spray paints as a primer. You can also leave the bottles clear and later add lights to them. It would probably look pretty cool. I didn't think to look at the kind of spray paint I was using. I used what I had in my art supplies. I don't think it matters for the primer/basecoat. Make sure to let them completely dry before dipping. 3.) Before dipping, I filled the bottles with water to avoid it from wanting to come back up as I dipped it. a.) This method was something I decided to try. It worked for me, but it's not necessary. If you fill the primed bottles, remember to wipe the outside dry before dipping unless you want that spotted look. 4.) Put some gloves on and create your colorful pattern on top of the water using spray paints. a.) I didn't check the spray paint I used. All I can tell you; is that the metallics for the dipping process did not work for me. I believe the glossier paints worked best. b.) Choose two to three colors and create your pattern by alternating them as you spray. c.) You can create the pattern in two different ways. There's the bullseye, as I did on most of them. You want to spray directly in the center alternating with the colors until you've built a nice set of rings. And there's the random spraying. Spray in random spots, but make sure to alternate the colors. There's no right or wrong way. It's all preference. 5.) Dip the bottle. a.) You can dip it straight down slowly or add a twist as you do. Do not lift it back up while dipping. It will ruin the design. b.) Once it's completely submerged, clear the top of the water using your glove or anything you wish to use before taking it out. Once the top is clear, take it out of the water. c.) Do not reuse any/if leftover paint. 6.) I set mine on a cinderblock outside overnight to dry. 7.) I didn't seal mine, but you should. Use any clear acrylic sealer of your choice. 8.) No, you don't have to refill the container with new water for the next dip. I used the same water for all of my dips. Make sure the top of the water has no paint and only add water if you see the level gets low. 9.) Dispose of water in two ways. Call your city townhall and ask or take a bucket with holes and fill it with sand/charcoal. Pour the water in that and let it filter. (Thank you to the person who suggested this.)
I love to see the alleged "fails" because it shows the human side of artist. We often see end results or videos with a bunch of edits but you keep it real. Love it. Also I wonder how the ones that were not primed would look with lights inside.
All extremely beautiful to me. Sometimes the faults in our work turns out to be the best fashion. Love them. Will be definitely getting to work on some.
WOW I LOVE THEM!!!!! ,, THANK YOU ,,YOU DID ALL THE HARD WORK FOR US... I CAN'T WAIT TO TRY...... MY MIND IS BUZZING WITH IDEAS THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THE KNOWLEDGE AND INFORMATION.. GOD BLESS...
Those are absolutely beautiful !!! Im researching hydro dipping because I am doing a masquerade mask. But now I want to do bottles, too !!! Your sunny personality added a lot to this video, too.
I know this video was put out a little while ago and I bumped into this by accident... I think this is just what I needed to compliment my other art.. and then I say to myself great that's all I need one more project.. thank you for sharing and all of the inspiration
I have learned that if you use spray cans, your water needs to be warm. The reason you get stringy paint is because the paint is cold. You can reclame your bottles with a brush and mineral spirits, and use them again. I like how you didn't give up, and kept on trying inspite of all the fails, and did it all with a smile. Good job.
I know I'm no art expert or anything. But the bottles you think you failed at. Are the ones I like most. Because they are unique and created by you and are fantastic. If it were me I'd be proud to display them on my shelf. 🙂
This is the best video I've seen that talks about the technique and the "do's" and "don'ts" of dipping!!! Thank you so so much for sharing your experience!!!
Greetings from Puerto Rico! You brought back memories from my childhood; I saw this technique in a car model magazine (we did not have internet/youtube for reference fifty years ago...). I would like to add just two suggestions we (my friends and I) used with quite good results: first, use warm water to warm the paint before spraying; it makes the paint flow better, and the second, try swirling the water BEFORE you apply the paint, that way you lessen the "blank spots". The step about drying the droplets is new and useful to me, but remember we did not have to fill our models with water, we used a bent (metal) coat hanger taped to the underside of the model so we could dip it upside down. Keep up the good work!
This is a stunning example of how to make a video that imparts useful information for novices. The learning experience really came alive for me watching your "mistakes". Many of the results I thought were great. The "stars" on your patriotic red white and blue bottle was a very happy "mistake". I plan to include this in my school holiday art programme for older children. .
I really like your approach to creativity and art. Because you seem to be enjoying the process. Even if the result doesn't always turn out how you expected it would. You're still having fun. And that of course is the most important thing. It is my belief that being creative should bring you joy. In my experience, if it doesn't bring you joy, it is very likely you won't enjoy the result. I've tried this technique with nail polish on nail tips. And had very little success. But after watching your video I just may have to try it out again. But, not with nails and nail polish. LoL Have you tried using any other kind of paint? Acrylic, craft paint, nail polish, etc? Thanks for a great video and inspiring me to give hydro dipping another try.
Wow! Thank you for showing us how you worked through the process. The fails and added tips were brilliant to see, and the end results are magnificent. Excellent work and fabulous editing and narration. This is my first time seeing you, momma and I'm smitten!! Totally love your style. Thank you for the content!
That Lava one would be awesome with a decoupage 🐉 dragon on it and the cork could be a gold nuget or a precious stone the dragon is holding on to! 😍 I can see It now! So pretty!
Thank you so much for showing your whole learning process here. Most "How to" videos are shown by people who are already experts. They naturally make things look easy, which can be intimidating to the novice audience for whom a "how to" video is intended. We need more people to show their mistakes and learning process along the way. Not only does it help new people learn from those mistakes to hopefully shorten the learning curve, but it helps us feel better about the inevitable mistakes we make in our own processes.
I just came across your video and I’m so glad I did!! Thank you so much for sharing your successes and your “failures”, (they turned out beautifully as well)! You have such an engaging voice and I definitely enjoyed this video! You have inspired me, thank you again☺️
Many years ago in the 70's I did the same technique with a "Mustang" motor cycle tank. I use lacquer car paint with retarder added so it wouldn't dry quick. I used a black, sanded base and then add the three primary colours of Red, Blue and Yellow.... I made my marble pattern in a cut in half 30 gallon oil tank (used for check air leaks in tires in the old days) I masked off both side ovals, added custom candy apply colours and used it as my back ground for an airbrush mural. re-sprayed the black after masking and then added 6 coats of clear lacquer... it's an old trick and sure beats spray cans...
Love your honesty no project can be perfect on the first try you didn't just showed a video like you waved a wand and it was perfect ,you walked us through all your fails thanks need more videos like this
I was watching etching videos before finding your hydrodipping one. Made me wonder if, like when etching, you could use a decal so part of the bottle shows through after dipping and peeling it off. Could be an interesting experiment 🙂
Honestly, your Horizontal Dipping Style is still pretty good actually, if you're looking for that specific look. I personally think it adds a uniqueness to the piece that no one does. Then again that's just me. I like things most people usually don't. As for the water droplets from filling the bottles your sister was right about the Red White and blue bottle. They Doo look like stars and what's more it works for the piece. So Instead of calling water droplets a "Don't" Why don't you call it a "Happy Accident" or "Artist's Flair"
I love The Blue/Black bottle,, and the Orange/White one with the spots. That's the great part about art 🎨 You take joy in effing up, creating beautiful mistakes.
I just stumbled upon your video. #1 great idea and easy to come up with the notions. #2 great tips #3 nice video edits. I absolutely love the double handed spray technique at high speed. #4 excellent music choice. Last but not least. #5 you have the best attitude. And your laugh makes me smile. Have a blessed crafty day.
Wow those are so cool. Loved watching the first ones. Sorry but that was fun to watch. I guess I should not laugh but you were so cute at fails..I thought the bad ones were not bad.. Actually it makes us learn better what not to do. Very smart girlfriend. Thanks for your time and talent. Great job and Gorgeous inspiration pieces....hugs Sheryl 💙🎨💙
When I first encountered this video, I initially thought it was too long, but your engaging personality kept my eyes pealed to it. I love that you were secure enough to tell us/show your flaws, but I couldn't see anything wrong with those pieces that you said were mistakes. Thank you ever so much for taking the time to show us how to do this.
I haven't sealed them yet because I was mostly focused on getting the technique down, but I was planning to use a spray sealer once I do. 🤔 However, sealing them with apoxy would take my pieces to a whole new level. I've been wanting to try that, but I don't have the proper tools. Maybe it's time I DIY a rig. Thanks for the great question! It got my gears going! 🙌🙏💗
We used nail polish when I was in Girl Scouts in the 70’s. It has a longer open time than the spray paint seems to. We made trinket boxes out of plastic Leggs pantyhose eggs, first dipping them, then standing them up and using glued- on drapery rings as the base.
I thought it was really refreshing to see your fails even though a lot of them looked just as good as some of my best work and I definitely am not gotten to your level of any sort of like paint porters or anything like that so you are doing good things and you seem like you are just sending out positivity and I appreciate that keep crafting
Thank you for taking us through your learning experience. Knowing what didn't work out for you helps the rest of us achieve the desired result without the extra frustration. So thank you again for the do's and don't! I will be looking forward to more videos from you in the future. Keep up the great work and wonderful teaching techniques you incorporate into your videos!!!!
