- Late Spring Grafting can be as successful as early spring grafting if you protect your grafts well against sun and dehydration. In this video, I use dormant scions stored for 4 months and graft them to young and old branches using Whip and Tongue and Modified Cleft Techniques.

Is it late summer or late spring? In any case, is it possible to do this cleft graft or bud graft on figs during the summer?
Late spring. The summer is not the best period, if the temperatures are too hot, but you can get away with it if you protect the grafts well.

Every time I witness you pruning a tree I cringe 😬 in fear that you’re hurting it, until I see how fantastic it turns out in the future growth. Grafting is exceptional, thank you for teaching us.
Not all trees can be pruned in such an aggressive way and bounce back without problems. But fig trees are resilient. If not, they will produce suckers from the roots and these are easier to graft. Since this tree was unproductive, this is the only way to solve the problem without replacing the tree. This way I benefit from the well developed root system.

Love the videos! You have inspired me to give it a try and it looks like I might have some success. Also people definitely need to watch your safety videos, I had a slip with the knife and cut my finger pretty bad 🤦♂️3 weeks ago. It is healing nicely with still some numbness that might not go away. My stupid mistake 😕
I am sorry about that. I should speak more often about safety when doing the cuts. I have learned muscle control and my knife never goes beyond the point I want. Uncontrolled, some cuts needed for some grafting techniques can be dangerous. Thanks for the comment.

I'm considering bark grafting onto a rather large rootstock plum sucker soon. Its been so far a very cool, wet, late spring/summer here in the Pacific Northwest, but things are definitely budding out. The best way to describe it would be a perpetually postponed summer. With sap flowing and the general cool wet weather it feels like things should behave like early spring and I can graft, but the amount of growth and the heavy rainfall is giving me doubts. Would it be possible to bark graft so late in the year? The tree has already flowered and somehow even set fruit (although it never really turns out as it is definitely just a rootstock variety).
Also wondering if non-dormant scions are even an option for this as I doubt I will be able to get a hold of dormant ones at this point. Considering grafting peach onto it. I believe I have deduced the rootstock variety to be St Julian A, and it has a substantial trunk at this point.

I just used today yours whip and tongue technique in a non dormant quince tree with a dormant pear variety. I hadn't have in hand a paperback and used a plastic one instead would be problem?

Here, olive trees are grafted in the spring (April, May or even later with some techniques). They react better to grafting when the sap is in full flow.
If we take an actively growing scion from a fig tree and cut its leaves and then graft like this do you think it will succeed?

Also hope your climate supports the fruit type, you are protecting properly and removing the protection around 4 weeks as this video mentioned

How long do you leave the bag on? I used aluminum foil last summer on bud grafts and think I left it on too long.
Thank you for your videos. I bridge grafted a 15 yr old Apple tree in March and the wax is still on. Does it take quick as it is June and the main trunk blossomed and looks like the rest of the tree. We know it was 80% strangled by an old rope someone used. When do you think we should take the wax off ? It's like wanting to see a present but having to wait until Christmas day...lol.....Do we wait until next spring to look to keep the grafts protected....?
Usually, you don't need to take most waxes off. They simply peel when the trunk grows, like in bark grafting. Nevertheless, in some graft areas I tend to remove them after 4-5 months to check the area and avoid moist accumulation underneath the wax.

Can you do these type of grafts when you have 105 degrees. and above during summer.
It really depends on the type of tree you are grafting and how well it can bounce back. But, as a rule of thumb, I wouldn't do it, if very high temperatures were expected in the following couple of weeks.
In that case, its safer to use budding techniques, as these are less intrusive and you can keep most of the grafted branches, so the stress for the trees is minimal.
Great videos! I’m interested in grafting a few wisteria branches onto something in our yard. My options are a white or purple lilac bush, and a crab apple tree. Would any of those be compatible, or would I be better off attempting to clone the wisteria bush?
It’s a gift for my wife. The wisteria bush was planted by her mother, who has passed, and she has a very sentimental attachment to it.

A colocação das legendas é feita automaticamente pelo RUclips. Não consigo alterar isso. Não se esqueça de fechar os pequenos ecrãs publicitários que, quando aparecem, fazem as legendas "subir" um pouco mais. No ecrã do computador as legendas não se sobrepõem de forma significativa. Quanto às amendoeiras tenho alguns vídeos, já um pouco antigos, em que mostro algumas das técnicas que utilizo para as enxertar. Yes, you can. Just be sure to protect them extra carefully so they don't dehydrate (fresh scions are much more sensible).

If the grafting area is tighten with extra pressure will the scion die?

I haven't been able to find it in Portugal. Only Buddy Tape which is similar (in Agriloja) but at very high prices. I usually order it from Amazon. Search for "Parafilm Nursery Grafting Tape" by Bemis.

Thank you so much for sharing another excellent video JSacadura! Very interesting for climates like ours in Cyprus where in June-July we experience high temperatures. I have a question concerning the cover of the graft. The idea of padding envelope looks fine for the reasons you very clearly explain. You also say that in case you don’t have padded envelopes, you use paper bags and you cover them with aluminium foil; this sounds good too. Can I use a thin nylon bag and cover it with a paper bag? How do you compare this method with the one using paper bag and aluminium? Best regards, Ioannis
It will probably work, although I prefer the more opaque material on the outside (aluminium foil), so I can remove it after a couple of weeks, while maintaining the paper bag (which is translucid - so, some light starts eating the graft buds while there are still protected from direct sunlight for another week).

Yes, absolutely. Check my last video where I graft pears, kiwis and grapes with the same techniques.
Not clear about modified cleft grafts. Should one attempt to appose the cambium layers , at least on one side? Thanks
You can skew the scion, so the cambium layers cross at some point but, usually, there is no need to do that. The small back cut, intersect the rootstock cambium layer, at the base of the scion and, even when the scion is centered in the middle of the cut on the rootstock, this graft rarely fails. De um modo geral, todas as fruteiras que pertencem ao Género Prunus (pessegueiros, ameixoeiras, amendoeiras, nectarinas, etc). Tenho pessegueiros paraguaios enxertados em amendoeiras, por exemplo. No entanto, existem algumas incompatibilidades pontuais (na maioria dos casos, menores, mas que podem provocar problemas, a longo prazo), no caso de algumas variedades. Essa é a principal razão para se escolherem porta-enxertos dedicados, na maioria das enxertias. De qualquer forma, para aproveitar o sistema radicular de uma árvore já instalada e pouco produtiva, não se perde nada em enxertar. Por isso, só mesmo experimentando é que se consegue verificar se determinada variedade é totalmente compatível com cada porta-enxerto.

Use the same techniques I am using in this video (whip and tongue and modified cleft graft with dormant scions). They also work very well for kiwis.

You can also try chip-budding using buds from fresh scions. If you protect the chips well, this technique also works very well for kiwis. Here a few kiwis that I grafted using the chip-budding technique shown in this video - ruclips.net/video/3lssseaG_Tg/видео.html (at min. 13.51)

It would seem better to apply parafilm before raffia That way less parafilm used and a more intimate contact with the gradft
You have a point. The contact would be better. But, when tightening, the raffia would destroy/cut through the parafilm. Its a wax based tape and quite fragile. So, the only viable option is to cover the graft after the placement of the raffia.
Is it ok if I graft my trees in the late autumn?
You can definitively graft most fruit trees in the fall. Use T-budding, for instance (I have a recent video on the subject).
Can I use rubber band for tying?
Yes, you can. Check this video - ruclips.net/video/tFWvZzMv2Io/видео.html - min 7.06 where I am tying with a rubber band.
Why do you cut only one side of the scion into a long wedge but the other side is only short. Wouldn't it be better to cut a long wedge on both sides?
It has to do with the technique I am using - The Modified Cleft Graft. That small cut is essential in this technique as it makes a good cambium contact at the base of the graft. Mr Sacadura, I enjoy the info in your videos. Where do you get your parafilm? I bought something similar, made in China stuff, that will not stick to itself. Wind blows it right off. Found it on the web, go figure! Any help would be appreciated, thanks.
When to remove the almuniom and paper bags?
Usually I take a peak after 2-3 weeks. If I see new growth I start to open the bags (or the aluminium) so the new leaves can start growing with the indirect light. Failure to do so, will prevent them from growing for lack of sunlight.

You removed any chance of mother stock to grow by eliminatinglive branches and buds forcing the stock to use the grafts.
BTW I don't have any dormant scions to use just live apple trees that I have access to.

Yes, I have. I tried lychees and they all died during a harsh winter. In some rare years I get -6ºC or lower temperatures. Usually -1ºC is the norm for my winters. Most tropical and subtropical fruits don't resist temperatures lower than -4ºC, particularly when they are young. Mangoes would also die, for sure. If I manage to build a large greenhouse, some day, I might try them again.
@@JSacadura Oh, that's sad. I hope you manage to get that greenhouse done. You could try on a small scale though.
Some dwarf varieties can be quite vigorous and good too. And you can always keep them pruned and manageable.

Mangoes and other tropical fruits are usually grafted in june-aug period during monsoon. Temps are no too low even during that period. The trick is to keep the grafts in shed, or to protect them using aluminium foil.
I have 6 apple trees and no space for more, well I’m not willing to give any more space.
Would there be any danger with taking each tree and grafting the other 5 varieties to that tree for variety protection.
I only ask because I had an apple tree die few years ago and I can’t be sure if it was due to the heavy clay or the work we did near it, maybe we damaged one or more main roots.
EDIT: forgot to list the varieties.
Bramley, Red Devil, Granny Smith, Grenadier, James Grieve and an unknown variety sold as Solo Coronet Mini which I suspect has Cox apples.
Most dwarf rootstocks don't like heavy clay and don't grow much (they rarely die though). I have to use MM106 in my clay soil to get any growth from my apple trees and they still stay quite small.
Regarding your question... You can perfectly graft different varieties in branches of a single tree to secure them. The problem is always maintaining balance (by adequate pruning) between different varieties, as the vigor of each one is rarely the same.
@@JSacadura thanks for the advice, I did forget to take into account the differing flowering periods and the growth rates.
I feel the trees are old enough now to support changes like grafting, most are around 4-5years old.
The Solo Coronet Mini is from 2013 and is very dwarfing it’s would seem...the branches are getting long but not tall...it’s probably a good candidate for espalier as it is almost like Loganberries on long spindle like branches.
It bears minimal fruit, maybe 40 small apples maximum.
I’ll probably consider grafting onto the Grenadier tree since it always flowers late and the fruit is ready the earliest and it has a picking period of less than 3weeks from the first sight of a rotten apple still attached to the tree.
@@JSacadura I decided not to do this due to the seasonal coverage from the varieties I have and one of your videos (or maybe someone else’s) that mentions the dormancy period being important for health and production.

So no nurse branch is needed for figs?
When you cut a branch on a fig tree and you remove all its leaves, the fig tree has a tendency to remove the sap from that branch, drying it out, if there are other branches with leaves, or any new growth from dormant buds. So, I usually don't leave nurse branches in this type of grafting situation. In the next few weeks I will also have to watch carefully, to see if any buds below the graft point start to grow and remove that growth, or the top part of the branch, with the graft, might dry out.

Can you graft non-dormant scions?
Yes, you can. usually, the best options are bud grafts or patch grafts (check the channel for videos on these techniques).
@@JSacadura Well, based on one lone badass on the Internet that he did, I grafted 20 apple cuttings on my crappy root stock on root stock pear the other day (thanks Lowe's, without a doubt the worst and most inedible pears I have ever witnessed). We are now in late spring here in the High Desert of Southern California. So I clipped off the leaves, leaving bud bases and cut end splices of branches with the scions. We shall see. My earlier spring scion buds that survived (about a third) are full on growing up now. About six remain in indeterminate status. They may bud slow, the buds are not dried out or the shafts shriveled, but just not leafing out yet. They are in stasis, just not doing anything. Of the pear host, about one cutting at a time each week comes to life.
@@donaldkasper8346 I don't graft apple cuttings on pear rootstocks. They are, usually, not compatible or they tend to show delayed incompatibility. They might even take, but they grow very slowly, the connection tends to be weak and the resulting branches are not very productive. Anyway, you will soon find out. Good luck!

How about plum tree's
Plums trees don't like such and aggressive approach. Its best to use budding techniques, like I showed in previous videos. I might also have another one on this subject in a few weeks.

I was wondering how you get such precise closeups Right before the 12 minute mark I saw the zooming of the lens indicating another person is controlling the camera. That person actually know the process themselves because she or he knows where to position the viewfinder for good lighting and no obstructions from your hand or arm

I'm talking about university extensions video usually on high tension orchard work those camera people are fixated on the instructor resulting in few close ups to capture the jnstructor face and bypass loppers p
It would be nice to have someone to film while I am doing my grafts. For sure it will be much quicker and easy. Unfortunately, I have to do it all by myself. Position the camera, see if the lighting is okay, try to correctly focus the general grafting area and then execute the grafts while trying to avoid that my hands cover what I am doing, etc.
Most of the zoom effects you see, are done in post production. By filming in 4k and posting in HD, I am able to "zoom in" digitally on a smaller image, while editing. That way I can focus the viewers attention on what's important with a good level of detail.
But I see your point. In most university videos the instructor is a senior professor and the student/assistant/filmmaker tends to focus is attention on him, rarely being able to ilustraste correctly what he is doing.

@@JSacadura ok so you must zoom in using your editing software . I didn't realize uh ou could do that . But a good example is at the 1:56 share apparently you achieved a closeup by croping and enlarging scene . We nevertheless less you have excellent instructions
