I can definitely relate with the player character having to deal with an irritating job market. I guess we all have met Paul sometime in our lives, right?
You go to the employment office and apply for a job. Paul says: "Sorry. You gotta get educated first."
At this point it's like: "Fair enough." I mean, it's only fair that the company demands that their employees are educated. So, you get educated and get a degree. You go to the employment office again and apply for a job. Paul says: "Sorry. Your work history is not sufficient enough."
Then you're like: "How am I supposed to get a work history if I am not allowed to work?!"
Then you start to panic and get desperate, which essentially means you apply for every job available, but you're not getting hired because you're either not educated in the right field, or you don't have enough job experience. Then you hear Paul say: "McDonalds always hires new people..."
Yeah... cool; low pay and poor working conditions. That's what I went to college for...

I like to think Jones is "that guy."
You know who.
He looks normal, but deep down hes rotten. He'll take a job or do something that gets you slightly more money than you because he wants to show you up. I think its basically confirmed when he wins how he seems to dance around the screen behind himself. That is not the dance of a humble winner.
Try to find a copy (even online) of the manual for this game. The first page is literally Jones and his family begging the player not to make illegal copies of the game, as they sacrificed everything they had and saved money in order to make the game.

My grumpiest cat climbed on top of me while I was watching this video and started rubbing her face on my phone, right where the speaker is. Then the music came on ("we need to take a minute to appreciate these toons") and she glared at it in a way I can only describe as infuriated.
I don't understand why so many old games combine all these incongruous art styles. What's the point of having digitized actors if Jones is a weird cartoon man?
The point is, Jones is an NPC / synthetic AI-controlled caricature character. Nothing incongruous about the art style here.

Jones was just the cartoony mascot of the game he was not a playable option. The 4 people you play are also digital people. This game was alot of fun when I played it with friends in middle school as we imagined what it would be like when we graduated school

The best strategies I have found playing this game:
1) Save up for a refrigerator and buy food at the market for a month at a time; you will save money (and, more importantly, travel time) feeding yourself this way. Just be sure not to buy food from the market without a refrigerator, or you will lose time and money from visiting the doctor.
2) Trade school is usually good for getting a job as a butcher, which is a decent-paying intermediate job.
3) Prices will usually decline at the beginning of the game, so switching apartments is a good idea to lock in a better rent.
4) A degree in Business Administration usually qualifies you to work as an executive secretary at the factory, from which you can work your way up to a general manager. You can also go the route of getting a degree in engineering, which also pays well.
5) Keep an eye on investment prices as you play the game to get an idea of where they bottom out and where they peak; this will allow you to maximize earnings and minimize losses. Also, don't waste time on lottery tickets; like in real life, they are basically a waste of money.
6) Keep an eye on the prices of goods; if you notice prices going up, stop by the employment office to try to get a raise.
Yes. Yes, there is a cheap and easy way to victory. How do I know? Because one of our teachers considered playing this game a viable classroom project worthy of actually getting a grade. How? The person who got the most money got an A. The person who got the least money failed.

I was dumb, I actually tried to play the game properly. My friend, however, cheated. He didn't buy food or education the whole time, just worked and got his money up as far as possible, and then he edited the goddamn save file to make everything look like he played fairly. The teacher was so stupid she was like, "well, you printed the save file so there's no way you could have cheated."
If you're that stupid you deserve to have your students cheat.
If you make your students play this game for something related to the class you crearly can't catch somebody cheating even if it is obvious af

I know I'm very late to the party, but if someone like me keeps watching Ian's old videos and want to play something similar, "No Time To Relax" on steam is almost identical to this game and allows online play. Not trying to advertise for the game I don't even own myself, but seeing youtubers play that game and seeing this video for the first time only now made me realize that they're pretty much the same game.

MrWolfSnack Well, firstly a borad game can never offer you the same diversity of actions to take and secondly it's not a game where you try to be a police officer, but a normal person, so it's not that accurate to say a player were restricted in what he does ;-)
I deeply pity the German (and Austrian and actually most of the Middle European) police officers since they aren't allowed to do anything to stop criminals from being criminal without risking being sued.
I think it was yesterday when a female police officer was savagely attacked by an detained "rape-fugee" inside the police station, but she fought him off. He now has a few small bruises and she has to defend herself before court because of that.
_Oh, how much I wish _*_our_*_ police officers were allowed to use clubs and tasers and any sort of brute force to put a criminal out of commission..._

Funny story about the board game Game of Life, lol. Once, when my friends and I were playing it, my one friend wound up with so many kids she had to get a SECOND CAR just for the kids! XD
There was a "game of life" Video game version on PC. It was the board game, you could have CPU players, there were animated cutscenes for the squares, it was fucking amazing! I loved it... I can't play it anymore though, its too old and I cant find the disk or game anymore.
