- I can't think of a better way to spend time with those close to me by spending a day floating and fishing a river. As more people are finding there way on the water the question of how to plan a float logistically can arise. I hope this video answers many of those questions. As with most things are are many variables and I tried my best with this video to hit all the major points.
1) Understand basic river terms like "river right" "river left"
2) Understanding CFS, river flow, and how the river responds to high/low flows and flows impact on obstructions and obstacles.
3) Put Ins/Take Outs
4) Triple checking the float for potential hazards outside of your rowing capabilities.
5) Shuttles
If you float the San Juan use Dave Jaquez!

Dave also guides the Juan and is an all around great guy.
If you made it to the end I hope you enjoyed the easter egg.
Final note that isn't in the video, etiquette. It very river to river and I hope you try to learn some of the local float etiquette, that could be a whole other video.

Can we get a “What’s in my boat” episode complete with lots of puns?
How about a dump out your boat video like everyone did with their backpacks. What is in your boat? What extras to you carry in your rig for trailer (jack, hub, etc)?
Definitely , would be a good video to make.
Great video for guys like me with their first “stimulus raft”
Just picked up my "stimulus Echo Shadow II.." hahahah
You folks will regret not having that when out wonderful government jacks up our taxes to pay all that back the number of people spending that money on stuff they normally can't afford is frightening good on you but that is a decision you will regret im willing to bet
Great topic and video. Some super nuggets of wisdom and I appreciate the emphasis on double checking things . Nice work as always.
On X is a big help especially when I'm floating a river for the first time, I'm always paranoid about missing the take out!!!
Great video and information on drift boats. Thanks!
Thanks man I found that informative. You painted a most stupendous picture.
Thanks for another stellar video!
Great info and video . You know the river right side of the river is the best. Sick hoodie btw..
Great video! Now I am ready for our upcoming trip!!
Excellent video! The suggestions you mention to avoid problems sound like they come from authentic experiences. Thank you very much!
Really good video. I have never had much experience of small boats on rivers. But all the dangers are there to see. I do own a boat, a small boat 16' but this is for the sea. And I am amazed as how many people get into difficult situations. A lot to take in, but lets hope they get it. Take care. Shaun.
Super informative video! Keep it up brother
Dude, your killing it! I like the collaborations with Ben. How about some guide story videos? Like a day in the life from start to finish.
Definitely want to do a video covering a guide day.
@@AboutTrout Do it!
Man, you've got such good timing bro. I was just thinking to myself, "What do I need to do to plan a float trip?"
Awesome !stay safe , learn flows , and triple check for hazards !
Yeah a what’s in my boat video would be a huge help
Thanks you some much for the information. That really help. Also do you do solo floats? Or you always go with another person. CYA!!
I really dig that table.
It was a solid find !
@@AboutTrout lololol
Dammit! Huge has escaped his pen again. Roy, get me the dart gun.
I want to fish a float boat sometime next spring. They look so fun
i've been doing floats all of 2019 in NorCal and it's been a blast. did steelhead all spring, did a striper trip in the summer, more steelhead and a salmon in the fall, and tons of regular ol' trout trips in between.
@@patches152 Hell yea, I just picked up a used Flycraft and been hitting up the Steelhead, can't wait for Salmon!
Hoping to schedule a float trip with you soon! #jahfeels
Great video. How about booking a guide trip with you in the future?
www.abouttrout.com looking forward to it !
What if I had my right hand surgically flipped so I had two L's...how would I know which is left?
You literally used my home creek (Schoharie) as the example for CFS! hahah
😂 small world . Honestly it was the first image when I googled “CFS”
@@AboutTrout I'm in Glenwood, CO now but that made me feel all fuzzy inside seeing the little ole Schoharie Creek on your vid! Keep up the awesome work, James!
Glenwood would have to be my favorite place to base out of and fish ! Also you have sweet colors dough. Best donuts ever
@@AboutTrout Only the best donuts! Let me know if your in the area and want to hit the water. You always have a spot on my boat
You!
Pipe hits
If you can’t see around a bend don’t be afraid to hop out and take a peek on foot.
Excellent advice!
So I’m just getting into euro nymphing and subsequently fly tying. Does anyone have any recommendations for basic euro patters to learn to help me build my box? All I’ve got down right now is a euro style hares ear and rainbow warrior just because I fish them a lot on indicator rigs and I have a lot of confidence in them in the waters I fish (central NY). Thanks guys

@@AboutTrout thanks James! Appreciate it
I can't imagine fishing in a state where the land owners own the land under the water. That's just nuts
In the West whiskey is for drinking and water is for fighting .
Same in Colorado
Shoutout Prattsville. Only the real ones know. #jahfeel
On the south fork of the snake you can do 26 miles in a day it’s a massive river
Honest question, who shuttles the shuttle guy?
The shuttle guy rides with someone else . They drive the car/trailer and the other shuttle person follows them in another vehicle .
I figured so.. So how come only the one guy gets all the credit?

Why would you use a drift boat if they can be broken and they cost more?
Great question . Drift boats are more comfortable , usually have more storage options and the big thing is that they are physically easier to row and are way better at holding a line . They are also way better in the wind because they sit in the water vs a raft that sits on top of it .
You really need both. Start setting expectations early with your significant other. Or better use the Ben/James model, pair up with a buddy to cover both.
@@krissyverstad6204 it might be thinking like that got me an ex-wife.
@@braxtonrussell998 Well that sucks.
100% this is elite level knowledge . I’m slowly winning the “I need a raft “ battle with my wife .
I fish the gunny too whats your name and what is your guide company?
Thanks for watching. My name is James and the guide service is About Trout. We operate on the San Juan River in New Mexico. www.abouttrout.com
@@AboutTrout a lot of your video was Pleasure Park down is that from personal trips?
@@AboutTrout some of your video was Pleasure Park is that personal floats?
What are you trying to ask?
what kind of Smith shades are those?
Smith High Water . I love that they have a built in retainer like the guides choice . I hate wearing chums and this has kept me from loosing them on the water .
@@AboutTrout word
I thought CFS meant "Can't Fish (for) Shit"
True
where the hell was this video in 1992?
I was 2 😂
LOL! I hear you Brother. I rented a raft to float the Green River below Flaming Gorge around '92 and it was approximately 5 miles from the put in to the take out. I thought 5 miles was pretty short until I ended up rowing my ass off in the dark to get to the take out.
😂😂😂 been in that situation in a different section of the Green .
If you don't already know this basic stuff then you probably have no business being on a river.
Oh, you’d be surprised
