Watching Kevin Schwantz ride, even as a young guy, there really are no words, holy crap he was just fearless.

I was in hospital recovering from having half my right leg removed when these guys were plying their trade. I was shown live on TV, but the nurses wouldn't let me watch it in case I had a relapse.

Quite an endorsement for the VFR Honda, not promoted by Honda as an out an out racebike in the way the Fireblade was when that came out. It was classed as an allrounder, but it did pretty well here. Does help that Mr Haslam was on board, but respect to the VFR for being a remarkable design.

mind you, HRC tricked the hell out of those bikes, and they were miles from the production machines, even more so that the other big three.. they could also pilfer idea's from other race winning machines done up by the factory..
Racing was part of Honda's corporate mantra, and dedicated a larger portion of it's budget to the track.. I found not so much in outright speed an hp, but a total package, reliability and tire management , they would be quick up tot he final laps, when the other guys would be worn out..
That engine had a nice wide power band, not like the peaky gixxer, and they managed to get it on par in the i4's in power, made a difference for sure..

@@planegaper I was refering to the vfr 750 F that Ron Haslam was on, which was a road going bike with slicks on.

@@alexveldhuis6004 totally, didn't sink in till I watched a bit more of the races, he looked smoother than the front runners on that thing. I figured the rain would help him, but he said it made the bike harder to ride as it tended to slide poorly.. makes it even more impressive.. Made a fan of me for sure.. even better the thing lasted the weekend, imagine the dealer at the post break in checkup " what the fuck were you doing with this thing?"
personally I'd have given him a new bike, and kept that thing on my showroom floor..
bit of history , looked great in black too..

@@planegaper It made me check them out on ebay, gear driven cams in those days too. But I have 2 bikes already with garage space for only 1, so I shall dream on.

@@alexveldhuis6004 Indeed years ahead of it's time, makes me wonder how Halsam would have fared on an Rc30. I know how you feel, 2 ducs..
