Today, join us for the very first installment of our short story series! Keeping with the illithid theme to acknowledge the newest 5e adventure's BBEG, today we peek into a vignette set in Athkatla, beginning with a man tasked with a grisly deed in service to a mind flayer, and ending with a surprise appearance from one of the prime movers in the Realms!
This story is for the truly dedicated Realms fans out there. Don't worry if you have difficulty recollecting some of the references or names of things contained in this story. Our goal was to keep it as authentic and atmospheric as possible, but we encourage folks to look up what an "Alhoon" or an "iyael" is, if it is your first introduction to such things (and we acknowledge that the FR Wiki is a wonderful resource for such things).

Anyone else love the reference to “The Sadness of the Executioner” by Fritz Leiber?
Fritz was (briefly, ere he died) a friend, and I always admired him as a storyteller and a person.
My story isn't a great one, but I've always wanted to tell Ed this. In 81, when I was 16, we moved to Johnson City, TN, where a guy I knew at church introduced me to D&D. I didn't get to play because of the Panic until the mid 80's, but by then I was reading Dragon magazine, and seeing Ed's name in the letters columns frequently, then in articles he wrote, then all over the place with the Realms. But in those early days, his name came with his location, Johnson City, TN. And I always wondered at how close I had been to this brilliance in the making and never even knew it. Oh, the vicissitudes of fate. I like this new series btw. See you again.
I've been to Tennessee many times, and drove through Johnson City once, but I'm Canadian, and have never lived in the USA. Perhaps you're thinking of my stunt double.

This gives me happy flashbacks to my dad telling me stories he invented. I blame his education in storytelling (often he would stop in the middle of the action and told me that it was my turn) for me being an avid RPG fan.

VERY cool! I just ran a dungeon where the mindflayers in charge were ceromorphed from changelings and retained their ability to change shapes. I wish I had seen this video before I came up with that. Could have added some interesting lore.

I love this! Ed's in his natural story-telling mode. The way he writes and how he voices characters is so immersive. If only we could get a crackling fireplace in the background, that would be the cherry on top!

I have a question about Mindflayer lore. I'm certain some sources say that they come from the future, yet most don't mention it at all. Is that a thing in the mainline Forgotten Realms?
There are conflicting back-stories for the Illithids. One of them does indeed say they have come from the end of the D&D Multiverse to alter the past.
Another back-story is found in the Spelljammer product, The Astromundii Cluster. That has humans, at danger of extinction, calling out prayers to random gods and having their prayers answered by an illithiid god.
It's a tale, yes. Elminster tells me it's not true. It was rooted in old aunt/grandmother scare tactics: "Go on like that, and you'll grow tentacles!" leading to a bard tall-tale-telling that humans became illithids in the future, and now have come back to "reap the cattle" humans of today for their memories, thoughts (knowledge).

For years I read stories I wrote for the libraries I worked at, and I have narrated a few Realms tales over the years.
