Another good use for silicon spray is for the door seals. Here in Missouri during winter, moisture will freeze the door shut. Keeping the rubber sprayed will keep that from happening.

I've been maintaining and repairing my cars etc for 57 years. One of my older cars (one of many I have) is a 1990 TWR Jaguar XJS 3.6 manual in mint condition with only 41k miles on the clock. I've owned this one for 8 years and the passenger side window has always been stuck closed. I could tell it was getting power as there was a small dip in the brightness of lights when the switch was pressed but it would never move. Then I watched this and went straight out to try the door-slam trick. I opened the door. pressed the switch and firmly closed the door. Nothing. I did it again. Nothing. I did it again and down came the window!! Thanks a whole lot, Scotty. Just shows your're never to old to learn!! If I ever meet you I will buy you a beer or ten!!

*My 2013 Ford Edge Limited AWD only had an automatic window for the driver's side. The other windows were regular power windows. So I removed the master switch assembly on the driver's door and replaced it with one from a 2013 Lincoln MKX, replaced the regular switch on the passenger side with an automatic switch, changed out the passenger window motor, purchased the proper wiring harnesses, ran a single additional wire from the driver's door to the passenger door for master control of the automatic passenger window, and connected all the proper wiring in both doors. Now I have automatic windows on the driver's side and the passenger side. It was fun.*

The usual mixture of good advice, sprinkled in with some myths. Unless it's a really old vehicle, there are several protections against burning up the motor by holding down the switch, Usually one or both are used. When the window hits the stops at the bottom, or seats into the frame (or stops at the top for a frameless window), the added current trips a self resetting fuse. Some systems will monitor the motor RPM and if it drops to zero, will break the circuit. The obvious tell that this is how many work is when you have a binding window and it goes up a little way and stops and the switch has to be repeatedly pressed and released to fully close the window. (I'm sure you've seen this) I can't imagine how many motors would be damaged if these protections weren't commonplace. With all that said, fuses can fail too and sh*t happens, so I'll grant you that it makes no sense to hold these buttons down once their task is complete.

love the videos Scotty. I fixed my power windows with LPS 1 spray. I think my better half spilled a coffee in the master window control last year. LPS 1 is a greaseless lubricant, repels water, cleans and restores electrical boards. Just take the controller apart as much as your comfortable and spray away inside it. I then blow it out with air very well. I have fixed 2 very expensive electronic parts with it. 2 for 2. Use at your own risk though, I am no expert, but it worked great for me. Here's one more:
2 of the windows in my 2007 Nissan Murano stopped working within a few weeks of each other when the weather was hot. My air conditioner was also broken.
I suspect snow fell in the window switch when I rolled the window down that winter.
After thinking about the possible causes for weeks (and looking at the prices for replacement assemblies online), I took the switches out, took them apart, and looked at the contacts. They had black deposits on them from years of overuse, so I sprayed some De-oxit contact cleaner on it and rubbed the black stuff off.
    Worked like a charm.

Silicone spray is also good to spray on the weatherstrip around the doors and the trunk when the weather will be wet and a hard freeze. Wipe off the excess, if necessary. This prevents doors from sticking when the moisture freezes.

Electric windows do have a controller for each motor that senses the current. When the window reaches a mechanical limit, the motor slows down and the current goes up. The controller keeps the voltage applied for maybe 1/2 second, then shuts off the motor. Window motors used to have a circuit breaker to avoid high stall current.

Many thanks, slamming the door with the button depressed worked a treat. Then I used the Silicone spray all around and enev sprayed in the window gaps before trying to raise the window. Gave it a few more squirts and the window works as new. Thanks again. With the hot weather here in Australia, they tend to stick.

Some years back I had a power window motor lacking lubrication stop working.Simply taking the motor apart (not easy as the shaft was stuck in place) and greasing the motor shaft where the bushing slides on was all it needed to work as good as new. Sometimes the factory does not use as much grease as needed (maybe none) and parts can stick over time.

I have had very few window problems over the years, but all my problems were mechanical - a guide, a roller, or snubber out of adjustment [or broken] allowing the glass to tilt out of good geometry and jamming in the track- registers were fine. The real trick is always how to get the inside door panel off with zero damage to get at things to inspect & fix - some cars require special tools to release snap in style retainers, which work way better than just poking a screwdriver around haphazardly..

You might also want to try spraying the cable where it goes into the drum assembly (or the cable housing that leads into the drum assembly). If they're really old, the cable could be binding up on a dry housing, and some silicone or lithium might get them lubed up and working better.

I've been doing this for decades. I've had to replace just one window motor...in an Astro with 240,000 miles. One thing I can tell you, sand in the track will cause a lot of problems. This happened to a Jeep, which I just moved on to a guy who saw the diamond in the rough I was offering. Sand had gotten on it from road sand for snow here in Wisconsin. Buggered it all sorts of up. Dead of winter is no time to be putting water on your window tracks unless you're ok with a window frozen shut till May. The grinding was awful and the window motor was straining against the abrasive sand. I knew it was a short time before I moved it on, just needed it to get through this winter.

Scotty, I've found that just tapping the window switch down when they are all the way up just enough to make the window drop less than 1/8" takes the strain off of the window regulator, especially helpful with most newer cars where they use the cable regulator and plastic parts to hold the cable bead. This is especially helpful if the car will be parked for a long time with the windows up.I think it also leaves the motor with a little free play so if the window does stick it can break it loose by giving it a running start when the tension hits the cable. I handle a fleet of vehicles and the windows are always sticking like that, I've been doing the slam the door trick for years. Glad you showed everyone how it's done. One thing you should have mentioned is to do it with the engine running to give higher voltage to the motor. Keep the videos coming. Ha, I like that you listed common sense in the things used in this video but you may need to explain what that is to the millennials or over-educated.
I saw your capacitor jump starter listed too. Aren't they the best thing ever? I got a Schumacher brand 800A and I use it all the time, I used it to start a F550 Super Duty pickup (actually a Bearcat) after something drained both batteries. It fired it up just like the batteries were fully charged. The one you listed is a better deal, mine cost about $200 and it's only 100 amp more.
