I was at a concert in the early '80s. A gentleman offered to put me up on his shoulders whenever I wanted. I heard the drum beats of this song and I said, "Now!" Both Greg and Colin saw me and smiled at each other. Best night of my life.
Men at Work were one of the highlights in the 80s. No 80s without Men at Work. RIP Greg Ham. Colin Hay is one of the most underestimated singers and musicians ever!
***** By all means, he was and is underrated. Men At Work didn't have a characteristic fanbase so their fame unfortunately vanished within a few years. That was the only mishap. ;)
***** Thank you but I know that. :) Since I wrote in the thread opening "underestimated" and wondered if it probably caused such confusion, I thought that "underrated" might have been the better word. I suppose that it's not necessary to mention that I'm not a native English speaker. ;)
Colin Hay rarely seems to get mentioned in discussions about the truly great singers in history but he so obviously is. The guy's effortless power and range is ridiculous. He was, and, suspiciously, still is, an absolute phenomenon.
Though he wasn't specially gifted or technically talented, his great sense of humor and charisma more than made up for it. In the official video of this song you can see his fun personality at its best
@@ivangibaja4070 He wasn't gifted? His range is insane. He can hit notes that put him in the tiniest of company even now in his 70s. The guy is an utter phenomenon. That IS gifted. There are very few people born with that kind of power and ability. You simply can't teach it. You either have it or you don't, and he is one of the only people that has never lost it. It is very odd to hear a man of his age hitting notes that are beyond all but a tiny fraction of singers.
@@garethharrison5797 I said "specially" gifted. Generally speaking, of course he was, but in comparison to other famous artists from his era, I feel like he thrived more on his charisma and presence. Which I find just as commendable.
@@ivangibaja4070 I think as a songwriter, he was very good but not great. He didn't really get the chance to develop because MAW got too big, too quickly. He doesn't have as many great songs as someone like Sting, who developed and also had five albums under his belt before becoming a global star. As a singer, he was, in terms of white men singing guitar music, absolutely peerless. Personality and humour are one thing, and he had them in abundance, but his performances on those songs when he is in his highest range, like at the end of 'It's a Mistake' for example, are pure shock and awe. The guy was absolutely unbelievable.
@garethharrison5797 yes, I couldn't explain it any better than that. They're one of my favorite bands of all time, but I have to admit they always relied on scattered bangers rather than solid albums. (Which is no crime at all, most '80s bands suffer from that) Business as Usual is their best album by a long shot and it still isn't a 10/10, yes, it has the bangers we all know like Who can it Be Now, Down Under, Catch a Star or People Just Like to Play with Words, but I always thought it loses some points towards the second half (I never liked Be Good Johnny, I just find the chorus too annoying and ineffective to the point I always skip it). Cargo has its moments, but from there on, I just think their discography is all very enjoyable while not particularly great besides a few exceptions. But they're one of the most fun and charming bands ever, I cannot help but love them.
The sax is almost the lead vocal too... Colin sings Who Can It Be Now and Greg plays the lyrics back on sax... Amazing stuff. So much talent. RIP Greg Ham, if it wasn't for a silly court case you would be still with us sending tingles down our spines with that incredible sound and your passion...
Men At Work was such a breath of fresh air back in the 1980's, and along with Crocodile Dundee, were awesome ambassadors from Australia to the world...Their debut album was an instant classic.
Most likely Germany or some other European country. German fans were and probably still are notorious for clapping on the 1 and 3. God knows why, but it's really a thing there.
Incrível como a voz deles era verdadeira, não passava por nenhum programa de afinação, a voz de estúdio era a mesma. Isso sim era vocalistas. Sem falar que Men At Work é um dos deuses das musicas dos anos 80. Ouço desde criança !
These guys are so awesome and underrated. Ten to one if they had been from England instead of Australia they would have been widely accepted as one of the greatest bands in history.
They were essentially a bar band who became the biggest band in the world for about a year, when 'Thriller' was rewriting history, and numerous legendary artists were at or approaching their commercial peak. Look at the albums that were released between 1982 and 1984. Men at Work were enormous and competing very favourably during one of the biggest commercial spikes in the entire history of popular music. The best artists ever released more than a couple of albums of decent material which is why they are not 'underrated' in that regard. Nonetheless, they are remembered very fondly and they got absolutely to the top of the mountain, in a way that only The Police, U2 and a small handful of bands of their ilk ever managed, and they did it without having a poster-boy like Sting or Bono. They came along in an era when image was becoming pretty much everything due to the rise of MTV; they essentially played entirely by their own rules and won. There is no injustice here at all.
Rest In Peace Greg Ham. Thanks for leaving us the wonderful music you made, Not only is it ours to cherish, but your unique stamp on Men At Work's sound will continue to inspire and influence future generations for hundreds of years.
This one of the most under rated bands and lead singers (Colin Hay) in history! I never get tired of listening to Men at Work. Thanks guys for the great music and the memories.
Unless your mom (parents) played this song for you in the late 90's early 2000's ...Seems like You were born waaay after this song was written and performed, now I'm no psychologist but, whatever you're feeling while hearing this song it ain't nostalgia, at least not in the traditional sense.
The first thing I can remember hearing from Men At Work was that sax riff on the radio, bouncing off the brick walls behind my high school gym. Jesus Christ Almighty... I am very sad today, but happy for Greg. He is free.

They lasted from '79-'86 and again from '96-'02. Greg Ham was obviously an integral part of the band's sound, but the creative genius of the band was Colin Hay, and his longevity can't be doubted, he's still creating great music as a solo artist with songs like 'Beautiful World', 'I Just Don't Think I'll Ever Get Over You', and 'Waiting For My Real Life To Begin' (featured in 8 TV series and the movie 'Garden State'). I just saw Colin last night at the Birchmere in Alexandria, VA. Great show!

My favorite group as a child, Greg Ham very talented, plays sax, obo, flute, key board you name it. ....
Anthony Foreman he played oboe
He played the Flute, keyboards, saxophone, synthesizer, piano (of course), harmonica and even the guitar. But he could play any wind instrument
The harp too. He played the opening bit in 'Dr Hekyl and Mr Jive'. 'Till this day I'm wondering what key his harp was!
Singing back up vocals and immediately hitting that sax line. Epic.
