4 Victorinox covers all my practical uses.
Ranger for outdoor activities. Perfect set of useful tools b4 hitting diminishing returns. Ideal for pouch or pocket carry at 5 layers in the outdoors.
Switched Ranger’s back scale into a plus scale to accommodate a pen.
    Compact for urban EDC use.
Switched the tooth pick on both the Ranger & Compact for a fire steel from tortoise gear.
Bantam Alox for office or social gatherings.
Midnite Manager on keychain. Midnite Manager‘s 0/1 driver, compensates for the Philips capabilities missing in the compact.
I switch over to a leatherman wave or surge if i foresee pliers in play.

I am similar but I went for the Ambassador on my keychain. It’s really a perfect size I think, the scissors are nicer than on the small knives and it’s still super small!
I carry a larger knife in my purse for more “tool” uses…I’m thinking of upgrading to a Trekker for that as I’m getting older and a locking blade seems like a good idea.

I prefer the Rucksack for the outdoors, or the Alox Harvester. For Urban, I prefer either the Climber, or the Explorer. Adding a Spirit X, to the Explorer, you get the best Combo posible, and thus the best edc system. People who just carry the Compact, because something like the Climber feels heavy, shouldn't even carry anything, because these tools are for men, not for sisys. and that's Facts.

Your black 110mm model is my all time favourite, the outrider. What’s fantastic about is that if you have it on a lanyard attached to your wrist, ALL the main tools, the blade, the saw and the scissors all fold out from the same end opposite the lanyard. The back tools for out in the Bush are brilliant! There is a slight curve to the back edge that makes using the awl a breeze. The corkscrew is great for getting knots out of paracord or tent lines but my favourite use is winding the corkscrew into a long 1” stick fixing the knife nice and tight then using the saw to cut out of reach pine branches that may have fatwood resin in them or fungus for fire lighting. You could even in an emergency use the same principle with the main blade for a spear. This is the best outdoor knife in the range.

A SAK Champ was my son's first knife. The first thing he did was accidentally cut himself. He learned his lesson and still has it now, 10 years later. He loved playing with all the tools.

Though heavy and wide, I still like the Swiss champ. I heat with wood and get splinters. Can't do without the pin, tweezers, magnifying glass. With this model I always have a pen on hand. The saw lets me cut about halfway through found branches that would be too thick for me to break without cutting. Many of the cans of food sold at the $1.25 stores have a defect in 2 areas making the kitchen can opener skip over them, but the opener on this model gets the job done.

Very nice report, thank you. Also 30 years of victorinox user here. I do a lot of work on bikes, kayaks, trailers and cars as an outdoor guide. Locksmith is my favourite tool too because it combines a very logic set of features. Straight edge is easy to sharpen and the file is useful in much more situations then I thought. The scales are solid and last longer then the rubber ones. Maybe a bit heavy but worth it.

I appreciate that you never have any agenda when reviewing tools, just “This model is best”. I carry the same Leatherman model that I’ve had for years, and the Victorinox Spartan. Also a small Gerber multi tool that I regret buying and use for work.

recently fell in love with the locksmith. I cant for the life of me figure out why it isn't more popular. everyone wants a plain edge trekker and completely look over this guy. More tools than a ranger grip 78 with practically all the same performance and in a more compact package.
i don't have one yet but I got a feeling that won't last long!

I personally use the Hiker the most, equally at home in the woods or as an EDC, your pretty much covered. I somehow lucked into finding a One Handed Trekker with a non-serrated blade, which I'm still not even sure was officially a real model. But much like my Leatherman, it only gets a fraction of the use that the Hiker does. Basically, the Hiker is always in my pocket, if I'm fishing I'll buckle the Leatherman on my belt, and if I'm hunting I'll have a fixed blade on my pack.

I used to buy my knives from surplus stores! I wasn't really into knives back then but i used to carry British army knives, then i remember seeing the German army knife 108mm GAK i bought a box full of them for next to nothing? Then a few years later the GAK trekker type use and abuse the hell out of them and not care as they were so cheap ! Sadly those days are long gone and the prices are now stupidly high even on surplus! I live in the UK so these lock GAKs are not for daily carry now but carry different models now but mainly a pioneer alox as its sturdy and non locking!

The only multitool worth its price is the Victorinox SpiritX, way better value than any Leatherman.
In 65 years (since I was 9) of using slipjoint knives I have never had one “magically” close on my hand or fingers. To categorize them as dangerous is irresponsible. People should learn to use their tools properly.

The Locksmith works for Urban and the woods. It‘s reduced on important, basic tools. It slices, it saws wood, it saws metal. And it opens one hand.
I was also interested in the Work Champ, but I already have a Leatherman Wave.

    Hi there,
You title the video and it's to be about SAKs. Within a couple of minutes you deviate to Leatherman. Huh? By the way if it is not absolutely ESSENTIAL to have a full size pliers, the the Victorinox tools are far superior. Period. You say the Leatherman is the preferred tool, but don't offer any reason for that. One wonders why.
Use the most? Now here, that will depend on where you are and what you're doing. Before continuing you say you're never without your Leatherman, yet your SAK shows considerable amount of wear. So, how come you weren't using your indispensable Leatherman?
2:56 ".. owl" actually it's a reamer/awl. One of THE most useful tools on the SAK.
Locking blade: if this is so important, why have you been using the SAK blade in preference to the locking blade of the L'man?
    4:40 " . using it quite a lot" Not the L'man?
So, at the end of the day it's a matter of take your pick, which is exactly what Victorinox is all about.
Simply put: identify what your need is and obtain the model that best fits that need. If that need requires a full size pliers Victorinox has the Swiss Tool that will do the job better than L'man, as it is considerably more robust and strong.
    Enjoy choosing.
