The hook is used to carry hot pots with wire handles that are used with camping, hiking, and early army cooking.....big full hot soup pots got heavy as well as hot coffee pots. We used them a lot in the field..
Yup. use it with my 10 gallon bucket to change water in my aquarium. Doesn’t make the load lighter, but a lot more comfortable to carry. It also stabilizes the pen in certain models.
There is a lot uses fo a corkscrew. Here are just som from top of my head: 1. Opens corked bottles (duh!) 2. Untie knots. 3. Pry the battery out of a cell phone. 4. Screw it into a wall and hang your coat on the SAK. 5. Staple remover. 6. Smooth out the hole you just made with the reamer. 7. Clear clogged faucet sprayer. 8. Bicycle tire valve tool. 9. Holds the micro screwdriver. 10. Pick gravel out of tires. 11. Rip open a blister package. 12. Ice pick. 13. Mark a pilot hole. 14. Clean mud out of shoe soles. 15. Knot the end of a cord. Thread it through the corkscrew. Handle. 16. Pop balloons. 17. Aides in sewing. 18. Clean mud out of sprinkler heads. 19. Push used snare wire through it, to straighten out the wire and remove coils or kinks. 20. Pulls the drain plug out of a tub. 21. Open the corkscrew and screw it tightly into a broomstick-thickness stick. Now open the blade. Tie it securely. Survival spear for fishing. 22. Hang the SAK from a piece of cordage from the ceiling. Plumb bob (I have the middle of the handle marked on one mine). 23. Corkscrew + a metal lid = a filter or wire mesh for cooking. 24. Carry a chunk of C4. 25. Pull frozen shoestrings tight, or help loosen them. 26. Helps get the innards out of a squirrel. 27. Gets the candle stub out of a candle holder. 28. Start fights on multitool forums. 29. Remove the fuel filter from a lawn mower. 30. Although the new corkscrews are 4 turns, you can use them for range estimation. 31. O-ring remover for your flashlights. 32. Pry out partially-exposed nails. 33. Tighten the apron strings on a wrestling ring. 34. The inside diameter of the corkscrew is 1/4". I'm sure you know what you can do with this. 35. Open just a small hole in a coconut. 36. Lift stuck items out of boxes. 37. Fish the tape out of a clogged VHS tape. 38. Remove patches from a flintlock gun. 39. Remove the inside of a shotgun shell, making a blank. Remove the wad and powder too. 40. If you don't want the mini screwdriver, the corkscrew can hold a ferro rod. 41. Tap a tree for sap. 42. Undo zip ties without breaking them. ✌️😉
My favorite "feature" of Victorinox? The unreal fit and finish for the price. Produced in crazy volumes, sold everywhere for reasonable prices, and the consistent quality puts many other manufacturers to shame!
Victorinox should make one with wood carving tools and call it “The Woodworker”. A couple chisels, a V-gouge, a couple half round chisels and a couple whittling blades would be really good.
Totally agree. I've even emailed Victorinox and suggested the same, combining the goodies of a SAK (blades, wood saw etc) with something like the tools from a Schrade 240T Old Timer. So far no sign of them doing one though :(
The parcel hook is a great tool for car and motorcycle mechanics. When tracing down electrical gremlins, it's awesome for pulling a single wire out of a thick loom of wires. You slip it in sideways, give it a quarter turn, and tug the offending wire out. It's perfect for that very specific job.
I am from Austria (close enough to Switzerland) and I have to say that people in europe (except the UK) indeed use more flathead than phillips. Like somebody else said you can use it for both.
Just a couple of notes: 1) You can use flathead screwdriver on both types of screws, But you going to have a hard time unscrewing normal screw with phillips screwdriver. 2) Macgyver used some kind of Tinker variation most of the time. Executive did appear on some episodes though. I remember him using the orange peeler in "Conuntdown" episode while neutralizing bombs on the cruiser. 3) You can use parcel hook to pull the tent pegs from the ground, drag a bunch of firewood you have tied up with paracord to the camp. You can prop a knife sa that it fuctions as a mobile stand, and most impirtantly, you can nestle a pen fine under it, so that you can write more comfortably holding the whole knife. And lastly, on the compact there is a nail file on the side of it. Yea, and what about putting fallen bicycle chain on the cogs again without soiling your hands? 4) You can get neat small pocketclip, you can attach to the keyring and clip it to your pocket. 5) Climer as opposed to Spartan has also the parcel hook, which normaly is a tool that comes on the same spring with scissors. You got a scissors on your knife, you very likely have a parcel hook as well. Thank you for the video. Victorinoxes are just amazing for ordinanry (non-knifenut) people.
I always knew it as a fireside pot lifter for camping pots and kettles with wire handles. tie up bundles of kindling with string and tote them one handed
I have a small collection and I keep them handy for daily use. Love the veteran counseling. Felix Immler videos are amazing for many creative uses of each tool. He actually recommended using the parcel hook to hold the ink pen. Love MacGyver! The flat head screwdriver blade is multifunctional...primarily as a bottle opener with a notch for wire stripper or wire bender. Most electrical outlets still have a slotted head. I use it as a ring tab lifter and opener now that my hands are arthritic. It is still a very good and relevant tool. I wore a Swiss card out.
i use the parcel hook all the time in construction. i fits a 5 gallon bucket (with the metal handle) perfectly. my company keeps every damn bucket they can find and the plastic part of the handle is usually broken off. the parcel hook works incredibly well for giving you a comfortable handle to hold the very heavy buckets with.
Victorinox Huntsman and an Opinel 08 and I've never wanted more knife. For bush crafting, hard use tasks I add a hatchet. Before I get hit by the tough knife crowd, I was taught if you are worried about your knife breaking you are using the wrong tool. I'm not saying that is the right way of thinking, just the way that works for me.
Paul, I would suggest also looking into the Victorinox Harvester. Having that hawkbill blade is a game-changer. Not saying replace either of the knives you mention because both, I can attest, are balls awesome but there's nothing like finding a plastic bottle someone ditched and using that hawkbill blade to turn it into ready cordage you can also use with a lighter to make it shrink down to make your bonds tighter on bundles. I think you'll love it.
The lack of a Phillips head: hundreds of times I have used the tip of the can opener to tighten or loosen a Phillips screw. It has always fit perfectly. It just contacts two of the 4 slots, so perhaps doesn't have as much torque, but it does work, and well! (BTW, I bought my alox knife in Germany in 1975. My favorite blade is the awl, using it to clean my fingernails!)
I modified the can opener. I ground away the can opener to make the screwdriver more useful. It actually made the can opener better . Slightly reshaping the screwdriver, makes a great Phillips driver . See my RUclips mod . ' victorinox explorer, huntsman, farmer, climber screwdriver can opener mod ' .
Yeah, I think the hook is mainly for buckets or pots with a little metal handle. So when you have loaded the bucket with really heavy stuff that the handle doesn't push into your hands too much.
The beat guy for different uses for victorinox and I'm surprised u never mentioned him FELIX IMLER he has a use and multiple uses for the Swiss knives and you should see what he does w the corkscrew
Also, one thing I found the little hook useful for is actually for carrying grocery bags! Saves your hand from getting strangled by the plastic handles. It actually works well!
Sak is an absolute natural at championing his hobby without going over the top. Great replies to the questions, he obviously really knows his stuff. Victorinox should commission him to help them with new designs.
I just want to comment on the hook tool in the knife. When I was a child...70 plus years ago, my father had a small metal shoe horn with a folding hook on it. After watching this video, I know that the shoe horn didn't double as a package carrier. It was to pull the laces tight on boots.
1_Main use for the hook nowadays it's to write with the pen. You level the hook, place the pen in the gap, low back the hook and it clamps the pen in place to write more comfortable. 2_Useful to open drinks cans with ring. 3_To pass the lace of worn out snikers for the hole. 4_To carry things tied up with laces/ropes. 5_To take camping pots for the handle off the campfire. 6_To adjust the radius of the bike wheels 7_To set in place the bike chain without get grease in your hands _____ The scaler it's a way to give use to the edge of the tool to take off the fishing hook. It's very useful if you are in the wild and need to clean your fish. It's not really an urban tool. 🤣😂 Swisschamp it's a very useful SAK, it has almost what you need. It's not for a pocket, but it amazing in a bag/backpack. My EDC SAK is the Minichamp. I love it and I have a little leather case to carry it in my belt. It has almost all you need in a daily basis in an urban environment.
The hook thing was also made to tighten ropes! I've carried a Victorinox since I was 10, found it while I was camping in France on a vacation, funnly enough it was the Camper model I found out years later! In Belgium I was the only one who carried a knife, only 1 teacher knew and because I hid it so well he trusted me with it and let me keep it. Since then I've always been interested in pocketknives and have a small collection, after that first knive I've had a couple more knives and ever since I was 16 I've been carrying a Leatherman Wave (yeah there are people who carry those everyday)!
I actually really love the Swiss champ, I also grew up watching MacGyver and as a kid in the 80s I fantasized about having large Swiss Army knife’s with all kinds of stuff attached to it. Now I’m a 40-year-old kid and I can just buy it ha ha Ha
My personal favorite is the Explorer. It’s basically a Climber plus an in-line screwdriver and magnifying glass. I find the in-line screwdriver much more useable than the 90 degree type found on most other models.
I've carried the Champ in my pocket everyday for over a decade, never even noticed it. I'm a burly, 6ft 6 outdoorsman mind, so perhaps I'd find it too big and heavy if I were an average sized dude, but it's absolutely saved my life on many occasions. Wouldn't be without it.
Compact and mini champ are my favorites and I use my orange peeler on the mini champ all the time . And the parcel hook is great for carrying alot of plastic bags from the grocery store and not cutting off blood flow to your fingers
Best knife steel is always a good discussion. Here are my criteria: will it take an edge, keep an edge and can I easily resharpen in the woods? Vic steel is yes to all 3. All I need to know. It’s cool to have a blade made of Unobtainium but not if I can’t sharpen it easily around a campfire. Performance not pedigree.
When I was Field Engineer I used that Swiss knife "Champ" everyday at work or hotel and everywhere. It comes with leather pocket I strap it to my belt and it is there the whole day always ready to serve me. I found it much more useful than a Multitool plier from Leatherman for my job. The flat screw driver has nothing todo with Europe standard. It is used by the solder to tighten rifle parts. The hook is useful to pull your technical boots lace tight. Also can be used to get a lace or a small robe inside a tight hole, also it can be used to pull springs... I used all time at my job. For my job the Champ is all in one tool for me. however i carry around the Climber because it is lighter. Some hotels in some fancy country do not allow Swiss knife inside the hotel you must déposit it everyday at reception and pick it up maybe at the morning if they don't try to steal it . 🤣🤦♂️ I carry a cheap spare Swiss Knife as a present to the custom duty officer just to close his eyes on the saucisses and drinks inside my bags, it works better than giving 50.
That hook has a great purpose!! As a deer hunter I have forgotten my deer drag. Used a power cord, tied around deer, actually used that hook so I had something to hold on to while dragging the deer out of the woods! Power cord was cutting my hand. Was really impressed that it held up! Was heavy!
I love my deluxe Tinker! It has the pliers/scissors/Phillips screwdriver, etc... Victorinox has WWII throwback art like aircraft nose art on the scales and it is COOL!!!! My Sharpmaker keeps a scary sharp edge on the blades and that tool is in my EDC every day! Great video guys! Thank you!!
I remember talking to a couple of Americans who were asking why the hell almost every SAK has a bottle opener. I had to explain that in Europe, twist caps are not a thing. Pretty much every bottle of beer is a lift cap. So being a European knife, a bottle opener is considered essential.
This won’t work for your Compact, but on any knife that has the separate bottle opener and can opener there is a “hidden” Philips driver. The little slotted screwdriver on the end of the can opener is actually a 2-D #2 Philips driver. Not saying it’s as good as a full 3-D Philips but it’ll do in a pinch.
Explorer is the best SAK for me. I carry it every day in my pocket, and it served me well. Explorer has the most useful combination of tools for EDC in my opinion.
In Fire Fighting and EMS it is common to wear boots that have a zipper in the front. You step into the boot, reach down, pull the zipper up, and you are out the door. If you lace the zippers into the boots tight, they look better but are hard to zip up. The perfect tool to get that zipper up is the parcel hook on a SAK. FWIW: I have the Soldier with the Wounded Warrior Project scales. This is my second one, I accidently carried my first one into the airport :(
Thought I love them all for one reason or another, my favorite SAK is the Ranger. At 5 layers it's the limit of what I'm comfortable carrying in my pocket. And I have used every tool on it multiple times, including the parcel hook. The saw is out of this world useful, the file is great, the blades are awesome...it's just a great tool. I had purchased one several years ago and stupidly let my brother in law use it when I was helping him and my sister do some landscaping (FYI, the parcel hook is excellent for holding wire fencing in place and twisting wire) and he broke my knife. He used the blade to open a bag of mulch, didn't close it, dropped it point down, dropped the back of mulch on top of it, then stepped on it. I was very upset about that. Fortunately, someone (not him) loves me a whole lot and got me a new one. I'm also a huge fan of the Compact (which lives in my bag and goes with me everywhere) and the Cadet. I personally think it would be cool if Victorinox could figure out a way to magnetize that parcel hook or put a telescoping magnet in it's place for picking up screws, washers, nails etc. That would cool! Great video!
Felix Immler has a video where he showed 13 different tricks to use this hook. I don't know where he got the little magnet he put into the hook. This might be your solution for picking up screws, washers, nails etc.
Carried executive nearly 4 years. Repaired more things with this knife than any other sak. Mainly because its what i have on me at any given tiime. Sometimes I swap it out for a farmer or hiker due to feeling the need for something bigger, or when in the woods, but always go back to the executive for general edc. Add a p38 and a Gerber shard and you're good to go. The executive can do more than you would imagine. One day I will buy some 2mm carbon fiber sheet and make scales to epoxy in place, and maybe a couple of 6mm slots for tritium.
I'm 50 and have been carrying a pocket knife every day since I was 7. I've tried other things but always end back to SAK. I'm not a huge fan of the SAK stainless steel as they point out. My solution to sharpening is to get those knife sharpeners that have carbide and then ceramic set up as Vs that you run the blade through. It puts a decent edge quickly on a SAK and I no longer grumble trying to sharpen my SAK on my diamond stones.
My favorite is the Fieldmaster..it has the phillips instead of corkscrew..scissors, and saw..plus the 2 blades and the normal cap lifter can opener flat heads, and yes, the infamous parcel hook. It like the climber, but with a phillips instead of corkscrew.
As a saxophonist the compact is actually a pretty nifty tool to have. On a saxophone there are a bunch of tiny little screws that sometimes come undone. And also a having a knife around is useful for adjusting reeds to get them playing properly/better. And if you forgot a pencil at home (and you own or have a copy of the music, and if you don't mind using pen) you could use the pen to mark stuff in the music.
Damn! What a coincidence. I just went to the victorinox factory store for the first time yesterday! Got myself one of the 2019 limited edition champagne cadets and made a little blue leather lanyard for it with a brass bead. Really cool seeing where they are actually made, I love this thing!
It's not a coincidence, I got this vid in my yt recommendations too today after looking at victorinox products yesterday...it's how the internet works.
originally from Zimbabwe but live in the UK have carried a SAK for over 30 years and a climber specifically for over 20 years. Have a classic backup on my keys too.
I have never heard or read about anyone having a QC control issue on any sort of Victorinox, it's amazing how consistent their quality is. And I really don't mind the quality of the steel at all, because it's super rust resistant and very easy to sharpen up 'in the field'. For me that is way more important on a knife like this, than having some sort of expensive super steel. I gave my niece and nephew (10 and 9) both a Huntsman last year (asked my sister first obviously) , and they were just dancing around with joy. Definitely made me the cool aunt 😎.
I bought my first SAK in the early 90’s, a Champ for $50. I ended up getting a 2nd one in black opposed to the first in red. I gave my red one away to a good friend but still carry the black one every day in a sheath on my belt. I love the quality of the SAK, easy to sharpen, tools never loosen. I use the magnifying glass to see small print now that I’m 50, or to start a fire in good sunlight. The woodsaw cuts through a 2X 4 in seconds and it’s just a great all around edc tool. I still carry a Leatherman sidekick but it doesn’t have a scissors so I carry both.
For sure. Cant remember if it was my first. But it definitely was one of my first. Havent had one for about 15 years haha. Thinking Im just go buy my favourite 5 to catch up.
Great bits on the background and evolution of the SAK. Great watching two regular guys talk about tools they enjoy. Fun, informative and relaxing watch. Yep! I have 5 SAK.
21:05 the parcel hook is great for carrying a wire bail on a bucket if it doesnt have a grip. I also use mine in line tying or or untying, threading and unthreading paracord. Several funtional uses actually. I carry My ranger everyday, or a tinker for light carry days
My favorite SAK is the Compact. It has everything you need and nothing more in a very slim package. I bought a second one and ordered titanium custom scales, from a Polish modder, that seems to make it more rigid compared to the original celidor plastic. Great little knife, extremely pocketable.
I use the hook for getting my bicycle chain out when it gets stuck. Picking out tent pegs. Picking up items if they’ve fallen down narrow places....put string on knife and have the hook to pick the fallen item. Eg. Done this down the side of the car seats for fallen pens etc. Use it to get extra leverage getting out things out of walls etc.
I believe the reason for the flathead bit is actually just to include the bottle opener. You can't really incorporate a bottle opener into a Phillips screwdriver like you can with the flathead.
Been carrying a SAK since the late 60s. I own over 25, not counting the ones I lost or gave away. Each different but always an amazing tool. Great video, thank you 😊😊
U can put the pen under the hook and after u close the hook with the pen under it u can use the hole knife as a pen ;) And it should have a needle next to the Wine opener. (on the Compact) And the pioneer was the soldiers knife. We swiss have now a other biger victorinox as an soldier knife. Regards from Switzerland
I'm using and carrying Swiss Champ in front pocket of my jeans and I can hardly lived without it for about 1 month. I am hiking, traveling and repairing things often, it helps me to fix and make a lot of things. It's simply a peace of mind that comes with weight that you forget about over time
I use the Hook for tightening wire when fixing my deer lease fences property line, Also pretty handy to lift my food/Bear bag when camping using only paracord with knots tied into the line every few feet, You can literally sling the line over a strong branch and pull up your food bag and lock it with the hook on each knot you make, when it comes time to tie it down this makes it much easier to hold on to the thin line holding such a heavy bag.
The can opener seconds as a 2D philips head screwdriver on all SAK models. Although it may partially mangle the philips screw you are using it on. That being said the Cybertool S and Cybertool M are what I have found to be the most useful SAKs for my applications and thus the Cybertool S has become a part of my EDC. Being in residential construction, more so on the finish end of projects, I have lost count of how many door stops, door knobs, electric outlets, cabinet pulls, cabinet hinges, screen doors, and even light fixture I've installed using only this tool. Usually when walking back out to the truck for a screw driver, drill, or pliers would have taken longer than just pulling out my SAK from my pocket. Although I cut my teeth on the Alox Cadet and then upgraded to the Alox farmer I found having a full "bit set" at hand is far more convenient than just the standard 3 driver heads included on most standard SAKs. Now if only Victorinox would make a Cybertool S and replace the blades with the pliers I would be eternally appreciative. Reason being is I already carry a small utility blade(Rexford R.U.T.) and main knife. Not to mention it would make for a very capable TSA friendly multi tool as well. Make that version in Green Alox and I'd be on cloud 9 for sure!
Tinker delux has become my favorite knife. I have many spidercos, benchmades, ZTs, 10 different leathermans. I generally carry both a PM2 and a tinker delux, if i only carry one knife, its the tinker
I've used the orange peeler on the Executive to open clamshell packages, as screwdriver, scraper, etc. Even used it to score PVC pipe when I was under a house and had left my utility knife in the truck once.
Hi Zac, there's also a straight pin in the scales on the compact (under the corkscrew). I find it comes in really handy more frequently than you'd think. Have a great day!
Since you asked about the flathead drivers...The large driver was included on the very first production Swiss Army knife, and did not have the cap lifter integrated. It is there because it fits the flathead screws that were on the standard issue Swiss rifles at the time. It was later integrated with the cap lifter when pop-top bottles became common. The design remains because, so long as you need a beer opener, why not have an extra screwdriver too? Also, the smaller driver on the can opener works well on most standard Philips head screws. I use mine on Philips all the time, and it has not damaged any screw heads, nor the tool.
The Hook is rated at 200 lbs pull. Knowing that opens a lot of uses for it! One really good use for it is pulling the slider on a heavy duty zipper, such as a Jeep soft top.
Perfect timing! I've been thinking of getting both myself and my wife's grandson a Swiss Army Knife! Thanks. Just put in an order for the Tinker/Classic combo!
Yep- 2 of my grandchildren (1@19- 1@18) joined the Army National Guard last year so I bought them each a Tinker with "Old Glory" scales and their names engraved on the primary blade. They appeared to be proud of the knives and I sure am proud of them!!
The Tinker is awesome. Smallest SAK with a Philips head and it comes in handy soooo often. I use mine daily at work and no longer have to carry around a couple screwdrivers. Also has been useful in non-work situations.
I use the flathead screwdriver for opening jam jars. Don't know if you use those glas containers with metal lids in the US but here they are common. And with the flathead you can go under the lid and twist a little to release the seal and get the thing open. Also some cabinets for technical use got "locks" which can be opened with it... Also the thing with Swiss army knives is you pick one you like and carry it, you will find unintended uses for almost any tool. No need to search for what you can do with the tools, you will encounter situations where you need to do something and will come up with a helpfull usage of the SAK. I don't drink, but in one occasion camping with a bunch of people one of them had a bottle of wine with them. But none of them had thought of an opener, and while they were thinking of breaking the bottle i handed them my knife... As for SAKs and Leathermans and SwissTools: they aren't better than proper tools for the job, but sometimes they are the only tools at hand, and save the day.
The "Slot-head Screwdriver" has a ton of uses, besides 'screws'...it's used for all kinds of battery covers, adjusters, and so on, Plus, it's massively useful for prying stuff open, for example..
Great vid guys, SAK collector is a bit of a legend. My favourite Swiss army knife would have to be the Climber Deluxe with scissors, pliers, and two blades and hook, though still pocket sized..
You spoke about the pen right after the hook. The hook can be lifted up and the pen slotted into its groove, then the hook closed carefully - Then you have a longer and easier to use pen. I have also used the hook to grab things in a narrow spot eg a cable in a hole. Other uses below. The SwissChamp can be carried in your pockets if you have thicker materials eg jeans / heavy shorts. The great thing about that is it has everything you might possibly need and is more convenient than a pliers based tool - Tools are easier to access and it's lighter/smaller. The fish scaler is useful if you need a non-sharp pokey tool!
Not quote finished the video but the parcel carrier is great for that one trip of groceries from the car! Or better yet, tightening hockey skate laces!!
The hook on the compact is a rope tool. It's used for tying and breaking knots. So, the little point on the end, is for pushing through a knot, and then you use the hook to grab a loop and pull it back through. It's basically like a crochet needle. I guess you could use it as a parcel carrier too.
I carry a Cybertool 41 in a kit in my bag for work. That tool has proven to be pretty handy. It has a bit driver with the bit holder built into the handle. I go back and forth between that and my Leatherman Wave+
the rambler goes with me 365 days a year on my house keys......when i think i may need something extra, i throw a pioneer in my pocket...thats all i have and all i need.
I've once used the parcel hook to pop open a locked door. Just slipped the hook in a small gap between the door and the frame and it hooked on the inner door lock and I just pulled it open! 👌 Worked like a charm! (And don't worry it was on my own property)
I recently bought a Compact and I really dig it! When I was 10 years old, my parents got me my first knife, a Climber. It's great but it's a little too thick to carry every day. The Compact packs a lot of tools and is perfect for me.
I've got the cybertool 34 and carry it daily. It's got the removible bits and driver on it which makes it great for quick repairs in the field during a photo shoot. It's also great for odd jobs round the house and for tightening up loose pot handles and the bottle opener is great for opening stubborn jars. Just pop it under the lid and lift and it releases the seal. Makes opening jars a breeze.
Had my swiss since i was 10 yrs old. Im 34 now. Used it every day. Shes my first lov. And shes in my pocket every day. Never had to get multiples. She is strapped!🌹
The hook is used to carry hot pots with wire handles that are used with camping, hiking, and early army cooking.....big full hot soup pots got heavy as well as hot coffee pots. We used them a lot in the field..
Eastern Cowboy which knife did you use specifically
that's interesting, I'll have to try that, we live in camping situation 365 days a year, I do use mine for pulling knots tight on small twines,,
Works with Instant pot trivet and pot-in-pot handles.
Yup. use it with my 10 gallon bucket to change water in my aquarium. Doesn’t make the load lighter, but a lot more comfortable to carry. It also stabilizes the pen in certain models.
I tie rope to the hook and throw it over dead tree branches to pull um down
There is a lot uses fo a corkscrew.
Here are just som from top of my head:
1. Opens corked bottles (duh!)
Yes, the quality is unheard of at their price point. Amazing knives, really.
Kind of like bic ballpoint pens
The Sak collector is my dad he is amazing
Thank you my little sweet heart. Love you so much. To see you supporting me on here is amazing. Love you. 😘😘😘
What is your favourite type of knife
Awhhhh

Victorinox should make one with wood carving tools and call it “The Woodworker”. A couple chisels, a V-gouge, a couple half round chisels and a couple whittling blades would be really good.
Totally agree. I've even emailed Victorinox and suggested the same, combining the goodies of a SAK (blades, wood saw etc) with something like the tools from a Schrade 240T Old Timer. So far no sign of them doing one though :(
Old Timer has a similar knife called the _24ot Splinter Carvin'_
But, yeah, Victorinox should make an attempt of their own.
That would be awesome.
Bloody brilliant idea... I'd patent that if I were you!
Agreed. Schrade makes a cheap copy of a really good wood carvers tool, and I really wish Vic would get on that. They can do so much better
Genius
I think the reason they use flathead is A. It’s flat and will fit easier and B. You can use a flathead on a Philips screw but not vice versa
The small flat head on the can opener fits great in phillips head screws
On top of that it's also a small pry bar.
Also it's not common in the UK but the knifes from Switzerland 🇨🇭
It’s nice to adjust your scope with
I am from Austria (close enough to Switzerland) and I have to say that people in europe (except the UK) indeed use more flathead than phillips. Like somebody else said you can use it for both.
Just a couple of notes:
1) You can use flathead screwdriver on both types of screws, But you going to have a hard time unscrewing normal screw with phillips screwdriver.
The hook is very useful for opening can food with badly designed pull tab. You can get much more leverage than pulling with your finger.
Nice, I would use it as such
I never thought of that!
I always knew it as a fireside pot lifter for camping pots and kettles with wire handles. tie up bundles of kindling with string and tote them one handed
Best tool for resetting a bike or gocart chain!
Tent stake puller
I have a small collection and I keep them handy for daily use. Love the veteran counseling. Felix Immler videos are amazing for many creative uses of each tool. He actually recommended using the parcel hook to hold the ink pen.
Love MacGyver!
The flat head screwdriver blade is multifunctional...primarily as a bottle opener with a notch for wire stripper or wire bender. Most electrical outlets still have a slotted head. I use it as a ring tab lifter and opener now that my hands are arthritic. It is still a very good and relevant tool.
I wore a Swiss card out.
Everyone wants to be McGuyver back in the 90's =)
i use the parcel hook all the time in construction. i fits a 5 gallon bucket (with the metal handle) perfectly. my company keeps every damn bucket they can find and the plastic part of the handle is usually broken off. the parcel hook works incredibly well for giving you a comfortable handle to hold the very heavy buckets with.
That's actually a really good idea.
😅YESS one of the best usees ive found, especially when their very heavy or you have to tote it for a long distance!
Right up until it doesn’t. Never cheap out like that.
@@talisikid1618 The trick is to know the difference between a knife and an axe, then use the right one.
The hook, the best way to pull a tent peg out of the ground, EVER!
Well, actually no.
You pull pegs by the rope. 🙄
@@jcoats5529 why on earth would you do that! You never drop the tent out of the way before the stressors are applied?
Great idea...
Correct! Also resetting a bike chain!
If you go camping and use a cast iron pot, you can use the parcel hook to carry the cast iron with. They usually have a thin like wire handle.
Good points, all. You're only limited by your imagination!
Or for fishing knots. I like using then when making boilie rigs
C. Scraper.
Yeah, I think the hook is mainly for buckets or pots with a little metal handle. So when you have loaded the bucket with really heavy stuff that the handle doesn't push into your hands too much.
They work well for getting a knots out of shoe laces
The beat guy for different uses for victorinox and I'm surprised u never mentioned him FELIX IMLER he has a use and multiple uses for the Swiss knives and you should see what he does w the corkscrew
Also, one thing I found the little hook useful for is actually for carrying grocery bags! Saves your hand from getting strangled by the plastic handles. It actually works well!
Yeah that’s the kinda thing I use it for too
Sak is an absolute natural at championing his hobby without going over the top.
This is what I was taught it was for as a child!
Same here...even to this day people use it the way it was described above. Especially alpinists when they are tying their boots.
I have rheumatic hands. And absolutely use the hook to pull up zippers on my shoes.
I had the same type of shoe horn .I must been made pre war , real horn .
The tool of the tactful gentleman who always has the right solution for the right problem.
the parcel hook works really well for fishing the drawstrings out of hoodies
1_Main use for the hook nowadays it's to write with the pen. You level the hook, place the pen in the gap, low back the hook and it clamps the pen in place to write more comfortable.
2_Useful to open drinks cans with ring.
3_To pass the lace of worn out snikers for the hole.
4_To carry things tied up with laces/ropes.
5_To take camping pots for the handle off the campfire.
6_To adjust the radius of the bike wheels
7_To set in place the bike chain without get grease in your hands
_____
The scaler it's a way to give use to the edge of the tool to take off the fishing hook. It's very useful if you are in the wild and need to clean your fish. It's not really an urban tool. 🤣😂
Swisschamp it's a very useful SAK, it has almost what you need.
Same age i was given my swiss.👍
I actually really love the Swiss champ, I also grew up watching MacGyver and as a kid in the 80s I fantasized about having large Swiss Army knife’s with all kinds of stuff attached to it. Now I’m a 40-year-old kid and I can just buy it ha ha Ha
MacGyver would have taken over the World with a Swisschamp a Roll of Gorrila Tape and a Box of Paperclips
My personal favorite is the Explorer. It’s basically a Climber plus an in-line screwdriver and magnifying glass. I find the in-line screwdriver much more useable than the 90 degree type found on most other models.
Agree!
Yes, finally someone else who appreciates my favorite 91mm vicsac. Great all round tool for the size.
I am 6ft6 and have swisschamp too. What would you think about work champ
Carried my red Champ for nearly 30 years. Never a problem.
Compact and mini champ are my favorites and I use my orange peeler on the mini champ all the time . And the parcel hook is great for carrying alot of plastic bags from the grocery store and not cutting off blood flow to your fingers
Orange peeler on minichamp is great.
Never thought of that use for the parcel hook but then never really cared that much. More worried about bag handles breaking.
Agree, blunt super steel is no good if it can't be sharpened.
I think the Iranians have weapons grade Unobtainium as we speak
I carry a cheap spare Swiss Knife as a present to the custom duty officer just to close his eyes on the saucisses and drinks inside my bags, it works better than giving 50.
That hook has a great purpose!! As a deer hunter I have forgotten my deer drag. Used a power cord, tied around deer, actually used that hook so I had something to hold on to while dragging the deer out of the woods! Power cord was cutting my hand. Was really impressed that it held up! Was heavy!
Guys the flat head screwdriver can often be used on Philips. The small ones often just fit in, the large ones often fit at an angle.
Thank you!!
Blade HQ dude needs a model with a fingernail cleaner.
Kevin Myers 😂😂😂
Blade HQ guy needs to talk less and listen more when he has an expert on.
You’d think with all the knives around....
Lol just use the file
Lol!
I remember talking to a couple of Americans who were asking why the hell almost every SAK has a bottle opener. I had to explain that in Europe, twist caps are not a thing. Pretty much every bottle of beer is a lift cap. So being a European knife, a bottle opener is considered essential.
And I would’ve thought the corkscrew would be widely used as well. I’ve certainly seen loads of people open wine bottles with a SAK over here.
😂 Back here in Switzerland, the corkscrew is the tool that we use the most on our knives!
In North America, we drink cheap wine from boxes...😂
"Many of you have never opened chardonnay under fire!" -Robin Williams
Same in Portugal
Same all over tomatoes and wine Europe.
When I was a kid I would use the parcel hook on my swiss army knife to tighten my skates.
Its also very good for untangling shoe laces
Bike chain repair and reset!
Explorer is the best SAK for me. I carry it every day in my pocket, and it served me well. Explorer has the most useful combination of tools for EDC in my opinion.
What's more likely, Ben carrying a cold steel knife as his edc, or Zack un doing his top button? 🤔 #TheWorldMayNeverKnow
Ben carrying a espada xl
shawn donovan Lmao!😂
Hahaha! If you have buttons, may as well use ‘em!
He may as well throw on a bow tie to complete the shirt hahaha
Depends if the cold steel is blue
I would love a version of the ranger for air travel - all the tools, just no knife
Carried my SAK Executive for +20yrs. Actually lost it 2yrs ago and thanks to you guys was able to rebuy it. 👍
The sak collector is such a cool dude. Loved this video his knowledge is crazy get him on again. 👊🏻
I have had a "Handyman" for years, it's still going strong. Man, what a good tool / knife.
the flathead screwdriver is on the soldier's knife to calibrate the sights on the swiss army assault rifle (SIG SG 550).
Sounds dope! Any pics?
@@garrahan90 you can see it on my Twitter! @colorfulfilth
I've used the parcel hook to carry a five gallon bucket full of rock and it worked perfectly
I mean thats what the handle is for
@@jordanmyers1450 maybe if the bucket doesn't have the plastic, avoiding it from digging into hands
@@garrahan90 that doesnt justify carrying a knife like this.
Uwu knife police :/
does it actually hold up
I have never heard or read about anyone having a QC control issue on any sort of Victorinox, it's amazing how consistent their quality is.
I've carried a SwissChamp on my belt for 30+ years. It's an incredibly useful bit of kit. It's not light, but it's no worse than a Wave.
I like the wave better as it is one handed and the bitkit is amazing. I love victorinox for anything lighter than a wave
Most people I know their first knives were SAKs or Buck 110
For sure. Cant remember if it was my first. But it definitely was one of my first. Havent had one for about 15 years haha. Thinking Im just go buy my favourite 5 to catch up.
WISH I COULD REMEMBER MY FIRST... IM ONLY 24 ALMOST 25...
My first knife was a SAK. Grandpa gave it to me about 60 years ago. My second was a Buck 110 that he gave me shortly before he died.
Great bits on the background and evolution of the SAK. Great watching two regular guys talk about tools they enjoy. Fun, informative and relaxing watch. Yep! I have 5 SAK.
Quick tip: I use the parcel hook that many people find useless on a swiss army knife to remove stuck tent stakes from the ground.
Use it to get extra leverage getting out things out of walls etc.
sharpen the inside of the parcel hook, and use it for a seatbelt cutter,,,,,,I love my sak.
I believe the reason for the flathead bit is actually just to include the bottle opener. You can't really incorporate a bottle opener into a Phillips screwdriver like you can with the flathead.
Good idea. Have you actually cut through a seat belt with it?
You gotta love a flathead on your sak..
Or an orange peeler....
The Sam collector is my dad Chen him on instagram he has got amazing pictures
All guys love there saks, its were the testosterone comes from.
(on the Compact)
And the pioneer was the soldiers knife.

Sak collector displayed A LIFETIME of knowledge, I admire his dedication
Loved this episode. But did you know you can actually get a needle to fit next to the corkscrew as well. So +1 on the tool side for those knives
I've used the parcel hook to replace a jumped bike chain without dirtying my hands, to carry heavy plastic shopping bags and to untie knots.
Definitely do it! My father gave me a Swiss Army Knife when I was a kid and I still have it, means a lot to me.
I believe the tip of the can opener is a flattened Phillips screwdriver
The "Slot-head Screwdriver" has a ton of uses, besides 'screws'...it's used for all kinds of battery covers, adjusters, and so on, Plus, it's massively useful for prying stuff open, for example..
I use the parcel hook to pull up my tent stakes all the time. Great tool! -Mike
Great vid guys, SAK collector is a bit of a legend. My favourite Swiss army knife would have to be the Climber Deluxe with scissors, pliers, and two blades and hook, though still pocket sized..
My favorite is the cybertool. I used it for years when I was a PC tech. Used it to open boxes and the screwdriver was excellent.
That's actually really smart lmao
The hook on the compact is a rope tool. It's used for tying and breaking knots. So, the little point on the end, is for pushing through a knot, and then you use the hook to grab a loop and pull it back through. It's basically like a crochet needle. I guess you could use it as a parcel carrier too.
The parcel hook is perfect for pail handles.
parcel hook is great for helping button a shirt, my grandpa used it for the last few years of his life
I Use the little hook for pulling tent pegs ....just Brilliant !!
I carry a Cybertool 41 in a kit in my bag for work. That tool has proven to be pretty handy. It has a bit driver with the bit holder built into the handle. I go back and forth between that and my Leatherman Wave+
They skipped right over the SAK Rambler, by far my favorite. Like the classic sd but with a real screwdriver and a bottle opener.
Yes! Rambler is perfection for a small SAK
the rambler goes with me 365 days a year on my house keys......when i think i may need something extra, i throw a pioneer in my pocket...thats all i have and all i need.
I love the Rambler too. I wish they made a 74mm version though. That would be my perfect SAK.
So cool to finally see the SAK collector. Love Victorinox knives.
It's not a quick deploy, but it works, they all do.
I've once used the parcel hook to pop open a locked door. Just slipped the hook in a small gap between the door and the frame and it hooked on the inner door lock and I just pulled it open! 👌 Worked like a charm!
(And don't worry it was on my own property)
The SAK fanatic has spoken and he’s resharpening his knife once per week!! Victorinox... time to step your blade steel game up!
I recently bought a Compact and I really dig it! When I was 10 years old, my parents got me my first knife, a Climber. It's great but it's a little too thick to carry every day. The Compact packs a lot of tools and is perfect for me.
I use the hook “parcel carrier” to take out backlashes in bait casters all the time
I got my first knife when I was 11 years old and I have it till now. These knives are life guaranteed.
Executives drink cocktails during meetings and throughout the day. So they need an orange peeler/zester.
Thanks to the comments I found out my knife has a pin under the corkscrew, I've had it about 5 years and never knew
Had my swiss since i was 10 yrs old. Im 34 now. Used it every day. Shes my first lov. And shes in my pocket every day. Never had to get multiples. She is strapped!🌹
