    Although it literally never ever gets mentioned, my favourite SAK is the Bantam. Essentially a trimmed down cadet which combines the bottle opener and can opener into an incredible single 'combi' tool which works great for either task. It's a single layer SAK weighing in at just 29g (1 ounce) which is 11g lighter than the SAK minichamp (also one of my favourites and on my keyring). It's an invisible knife which never leaves my person and I completely forget it's there.

    I carried the Executive for years. In college, the orange peeler worked really well for unlocking simple door locks on practice rooms, study rooms, etc.. Just reach into the crack between the strike plate and the door and then pull back, using the hooked part of it to snag and retract the latch. Sort of like using a credit card, but much easier. Also, the tip of the orange peeler is a flathead screwdriver.

    Great review Taylor. These knives are so iconic, and I believe every serious blade collector should own a few. The fit and finish for such a massively produced tool is remarkable and you can't beat the price for a Swiss-made product. I own a dozen or so SAKs and carry a Champ everywhere, I use it frequently and it's the "safe" knife when someone at works wants to borrow a blade for something. There is no way I'm handing them my Custom Mini Crooked River :)

    I got my first victorinox when I was 10, a stainless steel scaled Executive model, same model my dad carried on him throughout his adult life, but it didn't have the toothpick and tweezers so he gave it to me, I still have it. I now carry a cyber tool lite in a pouch on my belt, far too big for the pocket. I use pretty much every tool on there, with varying frequency, during my work day. I have a modified Huntsman that I use as a carving tool. I've built up a substantial collection of models over the years though.

  • @pudimdecana51
    @pudimdecana51 Год назад +1

    I couldn’t quite wrap my head around your observations: first you say the pioneer x is too big, and shows that prefers a custom that is about the same size (thickness of the scales), then you say the cadet is too small… well, there is no in between (except maybe the Evo series, that have broader blades, at 85mm length, but with thicker scales and no alox).
    These custom scales are very cool and the addition of the pocket clip seems a nice touch.
    I really forget about my 2 layered SAKs in my pockets, especially when hanging with a pocket clip. They don’t bother me at all.

  • @Cheeseb0ng

    I always carry a victorinox, I got a huntsman from my grandfather and an SD classic from my other grandfather. I have since put the huntsman in my toolbox as I never had a use for the saw or the corkscrew and the SD classic still lives on my keychain. Now I carry a rambler in my watch pocket everywhere because I always need to use the small screwdriver, I also just bought a Tinker Deluxe because it has the small pliers and the big screwdriver which is exactly the toolset I need every day, I make jewelry and the pliers are perfect for bending wire, rings and squeezing beads, absolute 10/10 tools.

    My absolute favorite SAK is the Tinker Deluxe. The scissors and small pliers come in clutch and I basically use them every day. I work with small PCB’s so the precision of the jaws are amazing :)
    That’s the smallest tool I can carry where I feel I could tackle basically everything that would be asked of me on a daily basis, unless it comes to large tasks that would require heavy pliers or a saw.
    Great video!

  • @subwoofer6726

    I've always carried the Fieldmaster or the Huntsman; but more-so the FM because I prefer having a screwdriver over a corkscrew. and I don't mind carrying a knife with some weight. While I do carry dedicated blades, if I had to chose out of all my knives, I'd carry a SAK!
    My dad has carried one all his life, I think his is the classic red Fieldmaster, an it's served him well. I took it from him when it was gunked and the parts were stiff, but it was nothing a little soaking in water with dish detergent, brushing, drying, sharpening, and lubricating didn't fix! After that got his SAK nearly back to working like new (minus the inevitable wear marks that come with years of use; which I could have sent to Swiss Army for a total repair with new scale and dissembled cleaning, but I wanted the satisfaction of feeling accomplished lol). The smaller blades are for finer cutting work. For a knife enthusiast the blades are nothing to run home about, but it's good stainless steel, and in the hands of a person who's good at sharpening and honing, the blades easily fix.
    I would like if SAK opened up a "Custom Shop" where you could customize your SAK from ground up, your tools, size, scales, finish (stainless steel, blacked) ect. Would cost you much more but you get the SAK YOU want if none of their premade models match your fancy.

  • @bassnerd44
    @bassnerd44 4 года назад +1

    My go to for a SAK is my Rambler. It is the size of the Executive but you get scissors, the philpshead/ cap lifter combo (the head is magnetic), blade, toothpick, tweezers, and file. It lives in my wallet 100% of the time and I carry it every day, wherever I go. It has come in clutch so much and it seriously completed my EDC.

    • @Luuk_M

      Love the Rambler, or even better: the discontinued Manager (which includes a retractable pen).
      However, these are 58 mm knives, and the Executive is a 74 mm knive. The main blade and scissors are considerably larger than on the 58 mm knives.

    My requirements for SAK are to be as few layers as possible while keeping the scissors. So my favourite 3 are Ambassador, Compact and Classic SD, in that order.
    The Climber gets an honourable mention for it's smaller blade - which I find I use more often than the main blade, surprisingly.

    My favourite Victorinox is a model no longer produced by Victorinox. It is the old Voyageur Alox, with a main blade, a combo tool with can opener, cap lifter, screw driver and a wire stripper on the first layer. And on the second layer the Voyageur has got a pair of scissors. Very nice companion for the urban environment. And my second choice would be one of the old Golfer models. It is a slightly smaller Victorinox Compact, without the nail file on the hook.

    Having two blades on a Swiss Army knife means you can have one (larger) blade as a beater and keep and use the other super sharp. Cork sniffers hate the steel but it’s easy to sharp and was never designed to be your main tool. You’ll probably use your Swiss army ahead of your edc jewelleries.

    25 years ago, when I was a kid - a "knockoff" didn't automatically mean "bad"! I had a knockoff with nice antler scales and I abused it and did all the things you should never do to your knife and it seemed almost unbreakable. I can't remember re-sharpening it at least once! Unfortunately some older kids stole it from me back in elementary when I got mugged by those punks who even took the patches that covered tho holes in my pants! They even cut those off with the very knife they took from me. I loved that knife man..

Honorable mentions: Urban: Climber,Compact,Super Tinker,Deluxe Tinker,Alox Classic,Electrician,Pioneer,Pioneer X,Cadet,Rambler,Ambasador. - For the outdoors: Harvester,Farmer,2 handed Trecker or Forester (Rucksack is and works better overall.Newer models are only unnecessary more robust and much heavier, but don't work better,IMO same goes for the Rangergrip series). Huntsman and Fieldmaster are great for both Urban and the Outdoors. My top 5: Spirit X,Explorer,Rucksack,Alox Classic,Harvester. PS: Most SAK collectors are located in the USA, that's a fact!

    My personal go to Victorinox that I carry literally everyday, everyplace I go is actually the only one I have at the moment and it’s the Electrician Alox. I did a lot of research and chose this knife because I liked that it had the second sheep’s foot blade over the can opener. That’s the thing I use the most on it. It’s a great knife and I love it. Wanna get either an Alox Classic or Minichamp next to compliment my electrician. I think that would be the perfect set up to me

    I do the classic SD when I'm out (way out sometimes) in the field. For the weight there's nothing nearly so versatile: scissors for nail hygiene (can make the difference between swamp rot and comfort), knife is self explanatory, tweezers for thorns and cactus spikes, file for modifying equipment, and the end of the file is a basic screwdriver for adjusting my gear or camera equipment. Only thing I don't think I ever use is the toothpick.

    the secondary blade I found more useful than the primary blade. I use the 2nd blade mainly for open boxes and cutting ropes/lines (doing dirty work). I have a Victorinox Hiker, the main blade for cutting foods/pealing fruit skins, etc. (doing food-related tasks), and leave the dirty stuff for the small 2nd blade. Opening boxes will always leave some glue residue on the blade, and often hard to wash away.
    The only reason I regret choosing the Hiker is the screwdriver, I will rather change it to a corkscrew instead.
    BTW, If you know how to open an oyster, you can open it using the bottle opener on your 91mm Swiss army knives(bigger is better). I used it to open at least a dozen of them when I don't have a proper oyster knife in hand.

    I use the secondary blade for opening packages or to cut something which is closed with tape. Because of tow reasons. 1 you can't destroy the thing in the package with the shorter blade. 2 the primary blade stays clean and don't gets stickie if you cut tape.

    I have the VICTORINOX SWISS ARMY Hiker, it has everything I wanted and I did look at the (Amazon) pocket clip but couldn't see putting a $20 clip on a $23 pocket knife and the reviews weren't that good from what I saw?

    What i need from a SAK is a pen, flashlight, the main blade, scissors and that multitool with a can and bottle opener and a flat head, and the main blade could have a file

      This exists! Sort of. It's the Duke of Edinburgh variant, or DofE. The only tradeoff is the main blade is blunted, which might be useful in an emergency if you're, say, cutting a seatbelt. You still have a sharp point on the tool with the awl (or scissors).

      @pudimdecana51 Год назад

      There is also the Scientist (2 layers as the compact, loses the scissors, but gets the in-line philips and magnifying glass) or the Yeoman (same as Scientist, but 3 layers, keeping the scissors). Both are out of line now and expensive on ebay, but there are some custom makers that can do them for you.

    I suggest that people look at the Victorinox Compact model. Full Size Scissors, Full Size Main Blade, "Plus" scales and a nice little nail file addition on the hook (on very few models). 2 LAYERS. The only thing I regret it not having is a Philips Screwdriver.

    Yeah, I wouldn’t carry an SAK without scissors. It’s become one of my most used tools over all the rest. I’d be lost without them I think. My next purchase is going to be a Compact for those warm days when I want to wear shorts and don’t need my heavier Huntsman or Handyman (my 2 typical edc’s).

    Yup, knockoff SAK was my first knife. Scales got loose on it a couple years ago, after 30 years. Goes to show you never can tell with Chinese knockoffs. Replaced it with the real thing, a Huntsman.

    I've carried one of my huntsman (or a Farmer + rambler) for years, I have a celidor and a wooden scaled one. ( I did some fancy filework on the main blade.) I've been carrying a compact on a Tec P7 pocket clip for about a year, for when I'm not in the woods. It's perfect. Nearly. Huntsmen are probably going to retire once I've got the Farmer X (due end of May)

    My favorite Swiss Army knife is the “Hiker” the sawblade is excellent and comes in handy. It has a Phillips head screwdriver instead of a corkscrew. I don’t drink wine either. The hiker has the original red scales with a toothpick and Tweezers Which I love having. But sadly I lost mine and I’m going to have to replace it. For me it’s the perfect EDC knife I carry it in my fifth pocket, and I also carry a Ontario rat 1 In my hip pocket next to my wallet.

  • @oliverpolden

    I would love it if Victorinox changed the minichamp or make a new model by: Removing the second blade, combine the ruler/screwdriver with the nail file, change the cuticle pusher to something else perhaps a larger flathead combined with something else and maybe change or remove the box cutter/orange peeler thing, it could stay but it seems to be quite a thick tool that I’m not sure gets a lot of use, could change that to a flathead/pry bar and change the cuticle pusher to a similar tool as the box opener. But now you basically have a Rambler, I would buy an alox version in a heartbeat.

    I grew up (in the 80s) hating swiss army knives. I had several which were all rickety and wouldn't get sharp no matter what I tried. I could never get the can opener to work on any of them.
    I found out as an adult that every one of them was a counterfeit. Apparently every Victorinox SAK sold at every fleamarket back then was fake.
    The first time I got the real thing in my hands, the first thing I did was to promptly cut myself by accident because I wasn't used to a SAK being sharp. I've been carrying one ever since, with my favorite model being the recruit.

    Did some serious looking at SAKs a couple months ago. As with just about everyone else I couldn’t find one with the right combination of tools for me. Why oh why is there not more of an aftermarket or diy for tool swapping and customization. In the end I bought the Leatherman Free T4 instead. It’s worked out great for me so far.

    The two SAKs that I carry the most are the climber and the super tinker! I would rather have the corkscrew, because you can use the flat screwdriver for many phillips screws, and you can use the corkscrew to untie knots hahahaha

    Always interesting to hear another perspective - with so many SAKs to choose from, there's always one which is the best for you, but there's always something you don't need, or something you wish you had too. I think those X models are a rip-off. I own and use a Farmer Alox a lot, but I'm looking at a popular European knife shop right now, and the standard Farmer Alox is £28. 95 - the Farmer X Alox is £50. That's over £21 extra for a teeny-weeny pair of scissors! You don't get anything else over the standard Farmer.
