Farmer X has my vote as well. I do find it a little chunky for an EDC knife but it's perfect for most situations. It's my #1 choice for hiking and camping and is a great tool for a handyman. It dispenses with some of the silly tools and focuses on what you need.
Put the X in your front pocket , your lady friends might think it’s an Erection !Seriously tho ; I like a bit of bulk / mass in handles ; here in Canada ( with cold hands , ( fingers feel like wooden offcuts ) , it’s not a bad thing !
@@crux314 You can easily wear it in a standard pant or shorts pocket but you're going to feel it . Keep in mind this is a 4 layer knife. I wear it in my pocket all the time. Would I want it in my back pocket while driving - probably not. If you want a true disappear in your pocket type knife that you could wear with anything check out the Victorianox Bantum. A good balance between those two for you might be the Victorianox Army 7.
Great video demonstrating the features, thanks. My 2 cents; the benefit of an Alox is really the slim profile, so the perfect Alox for me would be one that has the best tools in the most slim profile. I'd love to see a two layer 93mm alox with the big scissors, big blade and bottle-opener multi-tool (bonus points if they add a file on the side). Essentially the pioneer X but dropping a layer by removing the can-opener and punch. That would be perfection. Closest to date for me is either the pioneer x (but a bit large) or the bantam (but smaller knife/no scissors).
Thanks for the review of a lovely selection of these great knives - I have carried Pioneers for more than 50 years as my edc knife. Just my perspective of course, but good weapons handling to me, means never allow any blade to snap back without control. Always keep hold of it and ease it home. Also, never complete opening by touching a cutting edge or point. When you are cold, wet, tired or in any other way distracted, the correct muscle memory is to handle the blades like they may bite you.
I have a small collection of 9 different SAKs, largely due their ability to be EDC in the UK (discounting the locking models). In the Alox range I use the Bantam as my literal EDC knife as it so slim, has the tools needed most around the home & garden and the lack of key ring save my trouser pocket linings! The second is the Farmer X, bought as a replacement for my 1984 Huntsman as the main blade wore out (cannot find a way to restore the sharpness). The presence of both the wood saw and scissors is ideal for my camping trips. 😃
The Farmer-X has been my go-to when I'm in the woods, almost since the day Victorinox introduced it. It does everything I ever ask from a knife/multitool. Can't find a better all-around knife, for the size and weight. I also keep one in my Altoids tin PSK; fits perfectly.
Very nice rundown of your faves. I have both a Farmer X and Pioneer X. Between the 2, I much prefer the PX for regular carry. I thought the Farmer X would become my favorite outdoor knife, but that still goes to my Woodsman. It's chunky but it has everything I need out in the woods. If I had a top 5 Alox it would have to include the Mini Champ. So many functions in a very small size.
The thing about the mini champ is it has lots of tools, but functionality wise I really don't think it's much different than a classic sd alox. If you go through the tools there's lots of duplication, e.g. 3 blades, a file/flathead/nail tool that are in effect adding no functionality beyond the single file/screwdriver tool on the classic. In reality the only useful tool beyond the classic SD that exists on the mini champ (IMO of course) is the phillips multi-tool, which is a good one, but not sure it's worth twice the height/weight/cost.
@@SlipjointSawyer I like your posts , here in Canada we can ( within reason ) carry pretty much any edged tool we want ; that said I usually carry a Vic Spirit MX Clip , an Alox mini Champ , and a 93 mm Alox of some type ! Typically an Electrician for work , and a Pioneer X for play !

Great list, the Farmer X was the first Alox Victorinox I picked up. The Cadet is probably my number one just because it is so compact but all great options. Thanks for sharing!
I’ve always loved the Farmer for my outdoor/yard work knife, but the Farmer-X put it over the top. The saw is perfect for cutting down small saplings that try to take over the yard, and has helped cut openings for electrical boxes in drywall and other mundane tasks around the house.
@@SlipjointSawyer The extra thickness from the addition of the scissors makes it even more comfortable in the hand than the regular Farmer, which is pretty comfortable already. I wouldn’t hesitate to trust it if I had to for a “one tool” survival challenge if it were all I could take into the woods for an overnighter.
All great pocket knives for sure ! I have to admit I thought you were going to have the Pioneer X as No 1 because of it's slimness. Incidentally, a feller I'm acquainted with has the Victorinox 2 as his gardening knife. The hawk bill blade is great for de-budding, pruning, and taking cuttings apparently. He ended up having to buy two as his wife pinched his first one lol !
I wish they would make one with just blade and scissors only, with max blade length you can EDC in UK. Would be very nice and slim to attach to keychain.
The electrician is my favorite and daily pocket knife. Two blades like most classics, the sheepfoot blade is great, and the awl and base tools makes it so versatile in a very compact package.

My favourite Swiss army knife is not a Victorinox at all but a 1961 pattern Wenger Soldat or Standard Issue manufactured in '95. I far prefer the bail it has to the keyring on the Victorinox versions. The reamer, or punch as you call it is a fantastically versatile tool.

When you say “the alox pioneer is basically a cadet , but alox” that’s not really true bc it’s missing the fact that it is a bigger blade and a bigger screwdriver. I also didn’t know (at some point) that the 2mm of difference in the body made for a fatter blade and screwdriver
Try and improve your blade discipline. Don't use the blade edge to complete blade opening (demonstrated here on the awl and the file). You may get the wrong blade and it only needs that one time to ruin your day & dexterity 🚑 Good vid, nice measured summary but as some folk say, missing the alox mini champ, though I prefer the celador versions for the scale tools on these.

Who needs to rate them, just buy them all. You can't go wrong. All excellent. Thanks, Slippy.👜
You have a fantastic point 😂 buy them all now!
How can I get a bantam with a keyring
Dlt trading
I hope you have your money saved to buy the sexy 2023 Winter Magic Alox Cadet coming out Oct. 16th. I will be buying a few as investment pieces for the future. I wish they would have made it a 93mm Alox Electrician
Please share where you can get this from? Unless it's in the Victorinox website?
it will be widely available Oct. 16th. where ever they sell SAK's should have them. they will be easily found@@SlipjointSawyer
What about the alox bantam?
The bantam is excellent, just a little too thin for me
Victorinox Harvester ❤
Thank you for watching
In the beginning you said 93 mm but the Cadet is obviously 84 :)
Will be the first to admit I'm not a brilliant man 😂😂
@@SlipjointSawyer Oh no, you shouldn't do that :)
The awesome Cadet just managed to be beat many knives in another category :D
Super ses couteaux suisses j'aime beaucoup
Thanks for watching 🙏🏻
All Alox are the best
They are indeed
When you say “the alox pioneer is basically a cadet , but alox” that’s not really true bc it’s missing the fact that it is a bigger blade and a bigger screwdriver. I also didn’t know (at some point) that the 2mm of difference in the body made for a fatter blade and screwdriver
I meant recruit I'm not a brilliant man 😂
My EDC is a pre SD Classic, not Alox.
Awesome
Treat yourself to a winter magic 2023 cadet alox.
I have one 👀🤘🏻
No1: Harvester. No2: Farmer. No3: Farmer X.
Great choices
If you have a sharp knife why do you need scissors?
P.S. Farmer is my favorite also! 👍👍
Just personal taste! I love the Vic scissors
Dont forget the Alox Bantam inside the wallet :)
Another great option 🙏🏼
Victorinox Alox Swiss Army 7 anyone?
Another awesome one
Try and improve your blade discipline. Don't use the blade edge to complete blade opening (demonstrated here on the awl and the file). You may get the wrong blade and it only needs that one time to ruin your day & dexterity 🚑
Good vid, nice measured summary but as some folk say, missing the alox mini champ, though I prefer the celador versions for the scale tools on these.
Thanks for the tips!
*FarmerX* ❤
Awesome
You missed the Mini Champ which is an essential. Victorinox are so lazy with their tool options, particularly with the Alox versions.
I wish they'd make an Alox compact 👀
@@SlipjointSawyer I wish they'd make one with pliers.
👍🏼
🙏🏼
No toothpick or tweezers with these that's what I don't like about alox.
Lesser used tools for me so it doesn't really affect me ☺️
@SlipjointSawyer what's the alox special color for 2024? What's your favorite swiss army? Favorite alox?
